Fantastic experience: Love the new location and these people really know they’re fish.
Fantastic experience: Definitely the top quality shelf saltwater and freshwater products that you expect to see in a big retail store but for half the price definitely friendly people and the best experience all around I wouldn't go anywhere else ! Oh not to mention you can get the best freshwater for 50 cents and saltwater for 1$ / gallon just bring your own container. New location same amazing service

Fantastic experience: Great spot for your fish keeping needs. The young gentleman working there is very knowledgeable and helpful. I started a new fish tank with my 2yo and stocked everything from here. Everything is thriving and I haven't had any problems. If they don't have what you want, they can usually get it in on the next restock.

Fantastic experience: I had no idea there was a tropical fish store near me until I got a Betta fish as a gift and THEN needed to research how to care for it and what to buy for its little tank. A Tropical Reef is a little tricky to find even with GPS because it's located in the lot BEHIND the strip mall in the 9100 block of Park Blvd. As soon as I walked in this awesome young man, Jesse, welcomed me, showed me around, & answered my many questions with a smile and counseled me on what to buy to get rolling. All without pressure. Just lots of info. Tons of fish! Great experience!

Negative experience: Fish are stuffed into tiny tanks Store smells Many tanks are cloudy or green Worker showed up 5 minutes after the store was supposed to be open. Which wouldn't be a huge deal, it was just In addition to the other, more pressing issues 9/17/23 Response to Owner's Response: Maybe if this was the first pet shop I've been to, your answers would suffice, instead they come off as ignorant excuses.this is why my original , 3 star review is now a 1 star. I've also worked at multiple fish stores.The smell that I was smelling was from high ammonia and rotting fish as there were many dead fish. I also don't need to be curious about the cloudy water, because if you recall, I was there before the worker (who did not take any busses, he had a car which he drove himself... again, being late wasn't much of an issue, as I understand things happen, people have lives, but it just added to the frustration) so there was no way he had just scrubbed the tank. Again, cloudy water normally indicates high ammonia The tank size that the fish were in wasn't referring to the standard over stocking that fish stores have, but singular fish in tanks where they could barely turn around. 8 inch fish in 2.5 gallons, that's not standard, that's cruel. And really no wonder they're were so many dead fish Algae is common place in tanks... sure, especially with increased light times... green water however is not quite as common and is normally a sign of high ammonia or neglect. All in all I was willing to check it up to a bad day, and come back and see if things were different after a few months.... but from your "curious" and definitely not furious response... I'd say this is common practice, and a business that "loves fish." A business I would not want to support. Have a great day.
HI Michael, Thanks for the review. Its a fish store, what should it smell like? Again its a fish store, our stock unusually does not stay more then a few days until their forever tank , so crammed into tiny tanks ? This is a fish store, not an aquarium, although I wish I had the space to house every fish in a natural , regulated size aquarium, how cool would that be, I would not be able to bag the fish up for customers with ease, but aesthetically that would look amazing. Curious before furious, cloudy tanks, ask, maybe they had a scrub, vacuum, really there are multiple reasons for that, Green tanks? Algae is Green and a normal phenomenon in fish tanks or heck we would never have to clean them... As a store, we have to run lights more than an average so customers can see fish they wish to purchase, unfortunately that means more algae, more green, more scrubbing. On another note, We are a family ran business, with real people who love fish. If someone was late, although not ideal but in real life this does happen. We have an employee that catches 3 buses an rides 1.5 hours to get to work, I can't even imagine, he hands down must love fish more than most! I am sure, he was frantic knowing he was late and then had to open right away before he could feed, clean and prepare. So again,
I try to be curious rather than furious when I encounter situations that are not up to my standards. Thank you though for the review, all is appreciated and valued. I will use it to improve our practices, as I said we are a family who loves fish and people who love fish, Have a blessed day.
Negative experience: I rode way here from Saint Pete and they got all door locked cars outside but not even coming to the door to say they are gonna be closed today or whatever is going on BAD SERVICE ‼️‼️‼️‼️
Rissa , we apologize for the inconvenience, We are temporarily closed until 9/25 as we are moving the store, as you can imagine this is a difficult and messy move and therefore, had to close for the safety of our patrons. There was a sign on the door, I am in hope it was still intact when you arrived, however I know how disappointing it is , especially with the drive over. Negative experience: I was coming here to get java moss on a regular basis but, this will be the last time I come here, I ended up with bugs in my tank, springtails as I know they are harmless and I have no fish in the planted tank, just shrimp, and crabs, and now I am stuck with bugs hopping around now on the surface. Ugh sorry but no more plants from here.
Carrie, I am sorry you have experienced this. As you stated you have been getting it on the regular and I am assuming with no issues. The plants come from a fantastic , reputable farm we use. We rarely have issues as well so I know how disappointed you may feel. But unfortunately they are living items and this can and may happen even with precautions taken. It is highly advisable to quarantine anything that you get from anywhere that you introduce to your tank. Thank you for the opportunity to tell us, we are passionate about our plant selection and quality so I will certainly relay this information to our manager.
Fantastic experience: I visit this store on a monthly basis and have for a few years now. The staff here (Jessie is my favorite) is great and always informative. They have great pricing on their fish and are always willing to take the Guppies I breed for store credit. Great place to get RO Water as well. This will forever be my favorite local fish store. I highly recommend

Positive experience: We’ve been to this place a couple times, but our last visit on 6/28 was disappointing. Many of the freshwater displays had dead fish in them or fish with very obvious deformities (possibly on the breeders end, but even then, why put them up for sale or have them in with other fish?). Low stock of very small fish with high prices. I don’t remember it ever being this way. Also the doors were locked past 12- an employee had to let us in. The website looks way better than the fish we saw in person.
Hi, Kristen, I value your review, sometimes, just like hobbyist we have a bad day, week, etc. We do get fish with deformities, rather than pull them we like to treat them and save them. We are always upfront and transparent with these fish and the customer knows all the details before purchase. Our fish go QUICK, therefore, low stock will happen, we hate it as well when that happens. As for prices, wewish we could just give fish away, but since covid, the prices have grown substantially as with overhead so unfortunately, end prices have to increase as well. we try our very best to keep a competitive price with out having to close our doors. I am sorry you had a disappointing experience.
Negative experience: My fish I bought there died in 2 days. Owner said that all sales were final! He would not give me another fish in trade or refund my money! Will not buy there again and their fish are way over priced.
Hello Lynn, yes we have a no refund or exchange on our live stock. We cannot control outside perimeters once it leaves our shop. We treat and care for our fish before they go out the door as our own. They are healthy , eating, and inspected, if they are less than that, we are transparent about it, discount them and then its the customers decision to purchase. These are live animals and their is no guarantee on them when they leave our care and go to another. There are so many factors. This is posted by checkout, on the door and in our receipt. We are very transparent with this policy and gives the customer an option to purchase from us or not. However PetSmart and PetCO have a great warranty, because 9/10 times you will need it and no worries on your own tank perimeters or responsibility they will just give you a new one. Sounds fantastic!

Fantastic experience: My wife, two little kids, and I went into "A Tropical Reef" today to pick up some companion fish for our freshwater Beta in our 10 gallon tank. The first thing I noticed was the sign outside laying out some of their rules and setting expectations for their business (no livestock warranty). I found it very helpful and appreciate the directness. While walking in, we were greeted at the door and asked if we needed any help. We explained what we were looking for and were directed exactly where to go in the store and whom to talk with. We went to the back of the store and met Jesse, he quickly assessed our situation with a few specific questions after we explained what we wanted, and quickly directed us to several varieties of fish to would work well, along with commenting on any specific pro's and/or con's. After choosing a small school of Neon Tetras, we asked a few more questions about upkeep & maintenance and Jesse was able to direct and explain about their selection of aquatic plants and some of their "tank cleaners"/bottom feeders. We ended up with a few plants that Jesse specifically explained would work well with our current Beta & new Neon tetras, as well as getting their last Zebra Snail in stock. The only critical observations I can make is that overall the store is louder and darker than other stores. The only reason I generally notice ambiance noise levels is due to our some of our family's specific medical concerns. Some sound dampening panels may help, but may not do well with the humidity overall. The overall darker environment is probably to help replicate their natural environment, so no points deducted. :) Overall, we had an amazing customer experience and I was thoroughly impressed and satisfied with Jesse's knowledge and service. "A Tropical Reef" is a paradise of variety and service within an ocean of big box pet stores. Do yourself a favor and swing by and check out this gem of a store. We'll definitely will be coming back!

Positive experience: I stopped in here on a whim. Decent sized shop stocked with all of the supplies you could need for your aquariums. The staff were friendly and helpful. About freshwater fish, but the saltwater selection was pretty wide. They had a ton of different fish, vertebrates, and corals. Thought that it's a small business instead of a chain store. My only concern was the bubble algae that I saw in the various tanks, and the aptasia as they could potentially make it into your display tanks. However, that being said, most people experience that at some point anyway.

Dead coral comment . we have 10 tubs of coral none that are bleached or dead- you may be referring to the frag disks that new pieces are adhered to - and larger Disks - surfaces that have small pieces adhered to them to grow into landscape pieces . Fantastic experience: The fish at A Tropical Reef are very healthy compared to chain pet stores. Jessie is a wealth of knowledge and is very patient and helpful. A couple of weeks ago, I bought a sick fish from Animal House. My fish was treated with medicine but I needed advice for filtering out the meds to encourage good bacteria to grow. Jessie helped me get plants and established rocks. He also recommended a carbon filter and specific food to help my sick fish recover. I am eternally grateful!

Negative experience: Great place! Tim has helped every step of the way from the custom cabinet and tank to setting it all up in my office. Gave 5 stars for initial sale. Once the tank got set up it all went down hill. Tim could never get the tank balanced and basically said he didn't know why! It wasn't until i switched to Aquarium Quest that i found out that A Tropic Reef didn't set up my tank properly! Had to spend another 4k to have it plumbed and set up correctly. Thank you to Byron from Aquarium Quest for taking my tank from this green swamp that in 6 months Tim could not fix to the clear tank in less than 2 weeks. See photos.
Fantastic experience: Nice new store. The person working was a nice. and helpful. Great selection of corals.
Negative experience: A legit 1-star experience. I was the only customer in the store for 20 minutes before someone asked me if I needed help. I asked for the price of a fish (no label). They had to ask someone else and they came up with a lower than typical price (they guessed) and then never talked to me again until I left 20 minutes later. Their display frag tank is littered with aiptasia and bubble algae. Their salt tanks are full of obviously diseased/dying fish if they're not already dead getting chewed on by the remaining fish. The tanks are cracked, dirty, or empty. Hand-written names of fish that aren't there and not the names of the fish actually in the tank. Their main products are living creatures and they could care less about them. I wouldn't buy frozen food here.
Fantastic experience: Jessie helped me with some fresh water fish and snails to clean my tank. So many beautiful fish, very clean and knowledgeable staff. My first experience there was a very good one and I would recommend this place to anyone! Thanks again Jessie for your help.

Positive experience: They have a huge selection of fresh water tropical fish in one room and another huge room filled with saltwater fish. I have a fresh water tank so I can only speak to the quality of that end of the shop. The gentleman who helped me seemed quite knowledgeable and was very patient as I browsed through the fish and plants. He helped me make a decision quickly after I expressed my intensions. Everything was priced reasonably and seemed quite healthy. Over all it was a positive experience.
Negative experience: I bought two fish from here my first time going to this place. The people were kinda rude, but they had beautiful fish. Anyway, they died in a few days and spread ich to my entire tank. I am heartbroken. My tank had been running for about 8 months and now all of my fish are gone.

Negative experience: One if the better LFS around, prices reasonable and sea life selection is great. Only major issue was I bought a stag horn coral from this place and it had a brown algae bubble/seed which grew brown dot algae in the tank like crazy and consumed oxygen in the tank and wiped out half of my fish tank life. Kind of a big issue considering the cost. If you are to buy from here look for bubbles on hard coral and avoid those.
Fantastic experience: They answered all my questions,provided me with plants my fish could eat informed me what kind of fish I could put in with my goldfish. I'm,m very pleased to and would recommend them.
Negative experience: They have extremely high prices. Tried a new type of frozen food from them, paid $30. Checked another local fish store and it was $17, checked online $15. The coral prices are the same way, extremely overpriced for very common stuff. Additionally, the dry goods are expired, understocked or not available at all. The price gouging on the frozen food was the very last straw for me. I will not be returning.
Hello Christopher , we never want our customers to feel this way . Since Covid, prices have dramatically increased across the board for us in the areas of live stock - to the point where we don’t carry some items because it’s outrageous. Same in several areas of other inventory as well . We are not online and will never be able to compete with them . We also can not compete with some that sell coral / fish as a hobby . In these trying times we do everything we can to be competitive while keeping our doors open. We have many awesome LRS in the area that we support - We support all local business. In our findings we are mostly inline with LRS in most categories.
I looked up your last receipt - just to inquire - it indicates that you purchased the PE Mysis pellet- that cost 24.95 - if this is not what you have please let us know so we can adjust accordingly . Customer service is inconsistent and fish all need to be treated for ICH! Great store. Clean, and inviting. A very large selection of both Fresh and Saltwater species.

Fantastic experience: 2 weeks ago i came to Tampa Fl for the first time and I wanted to visit different fish aquarium stores. I came across Tropical Reef and at first i was like oh okay nice but when i saw how they take good care of the fish and the pricing I fell in love. I purchased cichlids and oscars. AGAIN the prices are great. Since i live in Maryland it was hard to take them back so they offered to shipped them. The first and second shipment with FEDEX was horrible due to fedex damaging the package but A Tropical Reef gave the best customer service. I was very upset but not at ATR but with Fedex. If you are ever in Tampa, FL and love fish please go check them out. its worth it

Fantastic experience: My favorite fish store! They have the best fish, plants and staff. I have three tanks and wish I had more but the husband had something to say after the third one....The staff here is so friendly and knowledgeable. When I first started in the fish hobby about a year and a half ago I didn't know a whole lot and the staff have taught me so much and have answered so many of my questions. This store has the best looking plants in the area. There actually are not many other stores locally that have plants and if they do they just look bad. I have never had a single issue with any of the plants or fish I have purchased. I have had a few compatibility issues with fish which is not ATR's fault but they have been really good about letting me bring fish back to them as well. The new location looks great and I'm really excited that they are selling frozen fish food now too.

Fantastic experience: Great place where you know they have a great aquarium system and the fish are in good health. They explain the difference of a pump from the other places and the correct things to use in your aquarium.
Fantastic experience: This is the only fish store I will go to after being burned by a big box store and another local fish store. Huge selection of plants and fish. I’ve been going there for almost a year and have yet to have a single fish, shrimp, or plant die from there. I’m also a novice so it must be hardy to survive me! Their workers are experts in either freshwater OR saltwater, they will direct you to the right person so just be patient. Love the new location!

Fantastic experience: ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS FISH STORE! Went there today with my two kids and it was absolutely awesome! Wide variety of fish to chose from, everything was very clean, great prices on the fish, and also a great wide variety of coral. Very knowledgeable with aquatics. Great family owned business, customer service was fantastic! Can’t wait for our next visit to this fish store, i believe we have found our new favorite spot to get our salt water tank up and running.
Negative experience: TERRIBLE aiptasia issue! Literally they have frags with it on it. I was absolutely horrified.

Fantastic experience: Jesse and O'Brian have been very helpful to to my daughter taking out freshwater fish. If you haven't been here before you're in for a surprise. It's definitely not your typical pet store. It's more like a hidden aquarium that you get to pick the fish out and take them home. The facility is very clean and the staff are very friendly.

Fantastic experience: I'm a reefer of 35 years. A tropical Reef store is the best of the best with Decades of knowledge within the store and incredible finds. The staff is friendly knowledgeable and will always do their best to satisfy.
Negative experience: Had to pour my own RO water... Majority of corals were not for sale... Other corals couldn't find prices... Idk why but the zoas were all closed up and looked staved. Was disappointed

Our prior location was a self serve as well, when time allowed we of course served our clients and get them water. Anyhow, we appreciate your feedback.
Negative experience: A friend told me about this place that he got his live sand from. My friend help me with my new hobby as a reefer. I’m new at this saltwater tank. I drove from a Tampa to this place. My first impression was really nice set up. They have limited fish selections. Most LPS are for online sale only. There were 2 guys working there. One was helping one other customer. There were only 2 customers, me and the other guy. One of the employees was bagging up the fish for the other customer and he was nice enough to ask me if I needed any help. He said that he’s not good enough with saltwater reef stuffs, he said the guy wearing a hat sitting at the register will help me with my rock and sand questions. He came back saying the other guy is busy. He was playing with his phone. Didn’t bother to say hello or ask if I needed any help when I walked in. Very bad customer service. Will never come back there again.

Negative experience: Not friendly at all. We went in to get more freshwater fish but they didn't have a good selection. The staff is not personable or inviting!

Positive experience: Their website says that they have PREMIUM discus. Well, they had 2 big discus and the one of them their mate died. They had those for 1 year. The other discus are the size of a dime for $30. They look very weak. They had 2 dead and some swimming side ways. So they should probably revise their description on premium discus. Just saying. In addition: Saw some ill fish, 2 dead floating, plants are also not the most robust. The place definitely has potential though. Hopefully, they can get it running to its full potential. Good luck.

Although there will be times that we will have a limited selection due availability from our breeders and farms. Also our discus collectors know that we special order most show quality discus . Also when fish are transported some may be weak and stressed . They are rejuvenated and cared for them until they are strong enough. Most aquaculture lovers know.
