Experiencia positiva: Was lovely day out hasn’t changed since I was little but not much there anymore as it’s all being revamped. Wanted to go in the butterfly garden but not for their price

Experiencia positiva: Really nice place, lovely grounds for an outdoor picnic. Plenty of exhibits to see which is nice, but everything is very small so you wouldn't end up spending more than 30 mins per area I'd say. Staff are lovely, friendly, very helpful and informative. The one thing I would say is that this is definitely overpriced. Some exhibitions / areas you have to buy a ticket separately for, although the museum itself is free to enter. The amount I paid to access 3 of the exhibitions for me and my child was not worth the money. They should really consider a flat entry fee for everything.

Experiencia fantástica: On our trip out from London toward Windsor we decided to make a stop here. Parking was simple enough we used the spaces by Sainsbury’s where the first couple of hours are free if you register through the app. Entry to the main museum doesn’t cost anything, though there are extra areas with a small charge, like the butterfly house. The museum itself was engaging and a bit different from the usual. The garden section wasn’t at its best during our visit, possibly due to ongoing work, but the view over London with landmarks like the Shard made up for it. There’s also a small petting area which seemed to be a big hit with children, so I’d say families get the most out of this spot.

Experiencia positiva: I had a really good few hours at this experience today. The farmers market showed interesting wares, the gardens and views are lovely. Inside, I was looking forward to the musical instrument exhibit but the lighting was v dark and there was such a wealth of references it was quite difficult to read the text accompanying each one. I hope they upgrade this room - and experience - in future. The world anthropological one was better (although I felt like they capped a swathe of Asiatic indigenous peoples). The aquarium is small but pleasant enough. No time for the butterflies unfortunately for me and the natural history exhibit is being renovated... Well worth a visit as it wasn't too busy and I did enjoy it.

Experiencia fantástica: I booked the butterfly house which was surprisingly tiny but full of butterfly’s and incredibly hot so impossible to sustain a visit past 10-15 minutes and as such not worth the money. However the main galleries in the museum are wonderful and very toddler friendly. Again it’s not huge but the exhibits are fascinating. Out side you get expansive views across London and multiple small gardens including a beautiful gravel garden. It’s a wonderful day out and it’s easy to park around the Horninan Drive side of the entrance gates. I’m very excited about the building works that are underway for the new Batural History section. There is a spacious cafe with eye wateringly high prices so bring a pic-nic.

Hi Alison, thanks for your 5-star review! We understand the Butterfly House is quite hot especially when the weather is warm outside. As part of our zoo license, the butterflies needs a warm, humid environment for their welfare as tropical creatures. We will pass on your comments about the cafe prices too. Hope to see you again soon when the renovations are complete.

Experiencia negativa: Treated ourselves to Plant Fair tickets and a visit to the beautiful butterfly house. Lots of plants and flowery loveliness on offer, if somewhat pricey. We found a lovely cool airy spot to rest and take in the vista with deckchairs helpfully placed under a shady tree behind the sunken garden, a welcome respite from the heat. Would have liked rather more choice of food stalls: filled baguettes or similar picnicy fayre would have just hit the spot - too hot for cooked meals, in our case. So we restrained our spending and enjoyed what our tickets gave us including discount entry to see the butterflies which were captivating. We'd arrived earlier than the ticketed entry at 11am and had to wait outside the gates sitting on a nearby wall which was a slight pain, could have been better advance communication to make clear that no entry would be allowed even to the grounds. All told, a very pleasant way to spend some peaceful time and enjoy the gardens with lovely views over London from the grassy hilltops.

Horniman Museum and Gardens
Horniman Museum and Gardens

Hi Melanie, thanks for the detailed review and glad you enjoyed the Plant Fair and Butterfly House. Unfortunately we aren't able to admit visitors before the event opens, as there are multiple vehicles on site with the traders setting up. We will make sure to make this clearer in our communications next year, and we will feedback your comments on the food.

Cheryl L 3 months ago

Experiencia negativa: If the gates are open, there are people enjoying the gardens, and there are no signs prohibiting entry, is it really wise and necessary for your badgeless male employees to yell at a lone middle-aged woman who has come in for her usual *daily* morning walk… …over what is apparently a plant fair!? And why not any of the other 2 dozen or so people walking in a park, including those who entered with me? Lock the gates. Put up signs. Don’t single out and deliberately frighten a woman. I’ll find another place to walk for fear of committing another grievous crime. Edit: my partner reminded me that this is the *second* time this has happened!

Hi Cheryl, we're really sorry you had this experience on the morning of the Plant Fair. Experiencia fantástica: A very nice museum with garden and library. What we really loved was the aquarium and the music room- and while most of the museum is free- some displays like butterfly, aquarium and robotic animals had a ticket. Also has a massive garden with variety of flowers and also a feeding area where you can see animals at specific times. For those without a car, it’s a ten minute walk from train station and a good place to visit one time.

Experiencia fantástica: The Horniman Musuem is hands down my favourite museum in London. The Butterfly House, the Aquarium, the World Art Gallery, the Natural History area, the stunning gardens and farm, the Music Room, the special Exhibtions and more. No other museum offers so much variety. I highly recommend a visit.

Experiencia fantástica: The Horniman Museum and Gardens offers a variety of activities for children and families in a charming setting. It’s a great destination for a day out, with plenty of space for walks, picnics, playtime, and relaxation while enjoying the scenery. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and engaging, whether in the museum, café, or among the activity coordinators and garden maintenance team. The atmosphere is relaxed, and there are both free and paid educational areas worth exploring. We enjoyed the Animal Trail, the Music Room, the World Gallery and the Exhibition Room, as well as the Robot Zoo, Aquarium and Mini Beasts Hunt. We visited on a day when school children were also present, and it was easy to navigate the space. I highly recommend visiting the Horniman Museum and using their maps to help you find your way around.

Experiencia fantástica: We had an excellent day out with our granddaughter, she particularly liked the butterfly house and aquarium, access to both of these was on a timed ticket. The museum was well laid out, not too crowded and full of interesting items. Staff were very helpful. Parking for the Horniman Centre is difficult with only two disabled bays on site. We parked in a nearby street free of charge. The café was a letdown for us. We chose ham and cheese Panini’s which took so long to serve that we had insufficient time to eat them prior to our aquarium visit. It was just as well that these were tasteless, the cheese unmelted and the bread was hard and dry, making them inedible. Just as well that we had no time left to eat them!

Experiencia fantástica: Of all the museums in London, this one is my favourite It may not be the biggest, but it’s absolutely packed with charm, incredible artefacts and its own share of thought-provoking exhibits (including, when I first went, the Benin Bronzes). Staff are incredibly welcoming, and the museum itself is highly accessible for a range of ages (sensory exhibits for the little ones, and teeming with information for the nerdier adult ones). Well worth a visit - you might find yourself back again and again!

Experiencia positiva: Staff were miserable and one was rude to me. Aquarium is so small and hardly anything to look at so don’t understand why you have to pay to go in there as it’s a waste of money. Same with the butterfly house. The market was so expensive. I used to go all the time as a child but now I wouldn’t bother going anymore they’ve changed it so much and charge so much for things

Experiencia fantástica: Coming to London? Come here !! Fascinating museum with something for everyone. Kids will enjoy the well presented and informative exhibits. Adults can add excellent interpretation signs and a good "flow" of information to the above. Beautiful, extensive gardens also with a plethora of displays and information, as well as good food and snacks add to the day's enjoyment. Don't miss the view over London city from the top of the hill. Plenty of public transport to the museum.

Experiencia negativa: Customer service is poor from the elderly white attendant at the butterfly house. I also notice she reserves her sour attitude for some customers. Poor service from her ruined the experience. It takes nothing to greet the customer with a smile and be polite as I was to her. Food at the cafe was overpriced and not good quality. The chicken was tough and dry. The fries were dry. The only part of our order that was acceptable was the burger.

Experiencia fantástica: Really lovely morning at the museum. It's free to enter, with the option of paying for entry to the aquarium, butterfly house, and any visiting exhibitions (Robot Zoo when we visited). The gardens are really pleasant with an interactive sound play area, which my kids loved. Entry to the aquarium was a little expensive for the size of the exhibition. However, they do offer a £1 ticket for all the paid exhibitions for people in receipt of Universal Credit. The butterfly house is also small for the admission price, but it is worth a visit. My kids found it magical, but the older adults found it far too hot! The cafe was very busy (half term) and very expensive. If you can, I recommend taking a picnic - there are plenty of picnic tables in the gardens, weather permitting. If you are in the area with children, a visit is highly recommended.

Experiencia positiva: A small and quaint museum in Forest Hill! I went with a friend and we took 1 1/2 hours to see the whole place. The gardens were really amazing and personally the highlight of the trip; the flowers and plants were really pretty, the Sunken Gardens were personally my favourite. They have lots of interactive areas, a highlight for families with kids, anf the staff were really nice! The museum was a tad disappointing. The natural history exhibition was under refurbishment (until 2026 if i remember), which I was fine with. The musical instruments display was impressive in terms of sheer size and the world gallery was very colourful and had a wide variety. However at some points I couldn’t really find the point of some of the artefacts/objects in some places. We hadn’t booked tickets for aquarium or butterfly house, as it was a last minute decision to visit. I think that might have made the experience better! The cafe prices and gift shop were quite expensive but the since the museum is free I have no complaints.

Experiencia positiva: First time here. Booked tickets for butterfly house and aquarium. I feel there needs to be a warning before you enter the butterfly house as it’s very humid and high temperature which I understand for the butterflies but makes the whole environment uncomfortable. The aquarium was ok but very small. The outside areas was okay too. The kiosk selling drinks and ice cream is very overpriced. £6 for a double scoop ice cream is far too much. Overall the museum is nice place to visit if you live locally or within reasonable public transport

Experiencia positiva: Love this museum as a nice place to go for a day out and is free. The extra exhibits are a great touch as they have to make money to keep open somehow. The aquarium is beautiful and well managed. Little areas for children to draw or dress up. However pencils were all broken but lovely member of staff went and sharpened some more for us. This time it was the robot zoo exhibit which was very interactive and scared the hell out of my 1yr old last time was dinosaurs always something fun. The location is great too as there’s a farm and beautiful garden to explore. Only issue was the gardens was under construction so children’s interactive area outside was not accessible. The cafe is clean and nice but very over priced and children’s menu really basic.

Experiencia negativa: I do not recommend visiting this place in the weekend as is it too busy and there are mostly families with many young children who run and are being loud. I noticed that there is an emphasis on African culture, and there are many items from Africa. As the exhibition is called ‘World Gallery’, I expected to see more items and stories from different parts of the world. The staff made the experience a very tense one. I asked for directions as a tourist and I was explained well, but they seemed to police around, not to make this a nice experience for tourists.

Hi, thanks for your review. Our World Gallery is displayed by continent, and there are display areas for every continent in the world. February half term is also our busiest time of year, so we do recommend visiting during afternoons on weekdays in term time for those who would like a quieter visit. It would be good to hear more about your experience with staff, please do email us at [email protected]. Thanks again.

Experiencia positiva: Pretty disappointing trip during the February half term. Half of the museum was closed and most of the things that were left required payment to enter. The walrus is gone, practically the whole of the ground floor is shut. It’s like a mish mash of ethnic items and some musical instruments - it no longer feels worth the trip. Also couldn’t go into the conservatory but I think that was the case last time as well. I wouldn’t go again after this visit, it felt like a waste of our day.

Experiencia positiva: It's a nice little museum. Part of the museum is under construction-big disappointment for us as the main reason for our visit was to see the famous walrus. Nope, not there. The website does bot mentioned it. Apparently it will reopen in 2026. The aquarium is the smallest we have ever been. Lovely but ticket is overpriced for the 10-15 mins experience. It was very busy today, the exhibitions were crowded. The butterfliy house is a bit disappointing. The butterflies looked so distressed flying around like mad. Also overpriced. Loved the exhibitions, especially the music room. The robot zoo is awsome! The best part of the day.

We're sorry you were disappointed not to see the Walrus on your visit, but glad you enjoyed your visit to Robot Zoo and the Music Gallery. We do mention that the Gallery is closed until 2026 on the Homepage and Plan Your Visit pages, but will review to see if we can make this clearer. February half term is our busiest time of year, so we do recommend visiting during afternoons on weekdays in term time for those who would like a quieter visit.

Experiencia negativa: Massively underwhelming. Avoid if you have tinnitus: Bizarre and totally random collection of objects, that I assume other museums didn't want. Toilets are hidden? (Ground floor sign says toilets in basement- a daunting prospect with a buggy) but then subsequently found TWO toilets, with disabled access, hidden on the ground floor! Café took 30 minutes to produce a bacon roll. Random stuff in glass cabinets, but a braille map ? The surfaces are all reflective and so noise levels, when children are present, are phenomenal. Still have tinnitus hours after leaving. Half the space seemed to be closed?

Experiencia fantástica: We went as part of the Chinese NY celebrations, it was a really special night with calligraphy lessons (should definitely be longer!), talisman making (perfect), tea tasting (booked, didn't get a chance to experience) & live music at intervals. Staff were really helpful & knowledgeable. It's refreshing to have local things that get the community together - thank you. Only thing I could add is when I enquired about experiences, I wasn't told about all the other one's i could've signed up for. As I have some mobility issues, this would've made helped. However, definitely recommend popping in here & going to the room where you can play actual instruments - such fun!. It's been years since I've been there, will definitely go more often. Many thanks

Experiencia positiva: I last went to this museum about 45 years ago. It was a wonderful place then. Now it seems to have been refuebed and all the fun has been taken away. Although there is still one small gallery that is free the aquarium and other galleries are all charged for. There is a cafe on site but this is an expensive franchised cafe.

Experiencia fantástica: Beautiful gardens and a very impressive museum... Especcially musical room was perfect.

Experiencia positiva: Very busy and noisy inside the museum, however a great place to take kids. Lots to see and interesting for adults too. Membership an advantage as otherwise quite pricey. They also did a concession for people with disabilities which was helpful.

Experiencia fantástica: Lots to see in here. All can be done in the free sections of the museum within 1 hour 30 minutes. In the gardens on a Sunday there is a market. Lots of local wares and food on sale. Good for an evening out with young kids.

Experiencia fantástica: A great outing for the entire family. Each display has some great activities for children. Will highly recommend it.

Experiencia positiva: The museum is free and nice to visit. The butterfly room is quite expensive considering the size. The aquarium is also very small. I understand that the museum being free means that they need to make money from the cafe and the other exhibitions, but I think the other things are over priced.

We're glad you thought your visit to the Horniman was nice, and we're sorry that you were unhappy with the prices. The income from the attractions, café and shop does go to helping fund our work and look after our collections, as you say.

Experiencia fantástica: Well worth a visit, will go again in the summer. Beautiful gardens, interesting, quirky museum which I thoroughly enjoyed walking around. Free entrance but you pay for the aquarium and butterfly House. Cafe small and very busy.

Experiencia fantástica: Impressive little museum! It's not massive but the items in the exhibitions are impressive! I learned a lot and I feel like I still need to come back for more! Totally recommended museum!

Experiencia fantástica: Excellent museum sadly spoiled somewhat by families using it as a playground for kids far too young to have any interest in the exhibits beyond the aquarium. They're running around screaming or being nappy changed in the galleries. Absolute carnage.

Hi there, we're glad you found the museum excellent, but sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit. The best times to visit are on weekday afternoons if you are looking for a quieter time to visit.

Experiencia fantástica: Free museum with huge grounds. Although the actual museum is not massive, the park around is perfect for walks. There’s also a butterfly park but you’ll need to pay to get in. Personally there’s nothing special about this some people like it. Overall great place to visit with the kids

Experiencia positiva: Aquarium and butterflies are overrated and overpriced. Music and world galleries are top tier.

Experiencia positiva: It’s very kid-friendly which makes it quite chaotic. The natural history section is closed until next year (or 2026? Cant rmb correctly). Nevertheless it’s not overwhelming with too many collections.

Experiencia fantástica: Tiniest treasure of the city! Home to many beautiful sea creatures and beautiful cultural displays. Learned a lot my first trip here. If you’re looking for a fun, quick weekend trip, this is the place.

Experiencia fantástica: Such a lovely museum, where to start? The staff are so friendly and helpful, the cafe food is tasty and queues aren't too long, the exhibitions are interesting and fun. The butterfly house is by far the best place in the museum and so wonderful. We had such a good day and will definitely be coming back again soon!

Experiencia positiva: We visited to see the dinosaur exhibit, which was small but very good. There were quite a few distressed children who I'm guessing didn't expect the size/noise/movement of some of the models. The artwork in the exhibit was incredible. We also visited the other galleries and the aquarium, all of which were informative and good. If the weather had been better we would've looked at the gardens too, we'll do that next time.

Experiencia fantástica: A brilliant museum showcasing an avid collector's interests. It's how museums used to be and should be, packed with items of interest with no dumbing down in an attempt to entertain. Set aside at least a couple of hours and visit over and over. Oh, and it's great for kids of all ages too - our grandchildren loved the aquarium and the current dinosaur exhibit was a real favourite. I mustn't forget that the butterfly house is a must too.

Experiencia fantástica: It's a lovely space to enjoy time with family. The exhibition space is quite small and cozy, so expect to take your time navigating through the crowd, but the space is lovely, well arranged, interesting and fun. There are some renovations happening so part of the exhibition is closed until 2026. It's still very much worth the visit. There is a Sunday market happening each week with some great local sellers and artists. The little zoo is also a lovely addition.

Experiencia fantástica: I regularly trade at the Horniman Market in the Bandstand on a Sunday selling my paintings and prints. I love the sense of community at the gardens and the customers who come to visit from all over the world. It's a great day out

Experiencia fantástica: Wonderful place for all ages. Brilliant that much of it is FREE too! Lots to see & do both inside and out. Well worth a visit. Museum and Gardens were busy but not overcrowded. Cafe busy but efficient service. Bonus of real life cafe cat to discover!

Experiencia positiva: Free to enter museum and grounds. Venue is clean, well staffed and lots of options of things to do. Seems to be an absolute parent draw with kids everywhere which is quite loud if you don't have them. The aquarium an additional cost but worth a visit. It's small and can be hard to view if kids take over, but at quiet times its lovely. Spent about 2-3 hours inside but sadly raining when we went outside.

Experiencia positiva: Not bad for a quick half day out. A couple of hours well spent. Obviously, it doesn't compare with most of the central London museums but nice enough. Has a few animals, a decent cafe and good toilet facilities
