Experiencia fantástica: What an incredible experience. Our captain, Craig, and crew (Rhianna) went above and beyond to make the afternoon memorable. We took the Captain Cook snorkel tour and it did not disappoint. The area had so many fish. You did not have to look hard to find them. While my family and I enjoyed snorkeling, the welcome surprise was the tour of the coastline on the trip back. It was indeed two trips in one. We highly recommend Dolphin Discoveries. Don’t hesitate booking an excursion with this group.

Experiencia fantástica: We did the manta ray night snorkel and it was amazing. My second time with the rays and first time with this company. They were great! Efficient, clear and explained the process very well. We went at 6pm and saw a gorgeous sunset and so many beautiful mantas. The other tour I did was at 8pm. If you’re deciding between times, they are both superb and offered equal manta viewing.

Experiencia fantástica: Highly recommend Dolphin Discoveries for anyone looking for snorkeling experience while visiting Kona. Raj & Riana were our guides for a snorkeling tour at the captain cook monument, it was an afternoon tour on a very hot july 4th 2025. The boat was awesome and it had enough shade , dry area for keeping stuff in the boat. Raj and Riana are knowledgeable for the area around and also shared good history of the caves nearby, treated us to a delicious pineapple after snorkeling. Also a shoutout to Jen, at the office for helping us plan this trip and answering all our questions. It was the first time our 6 year old snorkeling and was scared, once figuring out, insists this is one of the best memories from the trip.

The crew was fantastic—friendly, professional, and super knowledgeable. They made everyone feel at ease, gave a thorough safety briefing, and shared lots of great info about manta rays and the local marine life. The boat ride out was smooth and scenic, and once we arrived at the snorkel site, everything was well organized. Floating on the surface with the lights below, we were in the perfect spot to see these gentle giants up close. Within minutes, huge manta rays were gliding right beneath us—sometimes just inches away! It was breathtaking to watch them loop and feed in the glow of the lights. The experience felt safe, respectful to the wildlife, and incredibly special. If you’re visiting the Big Island, this tour is a must-do. We booked the 4-hour snorkeling tour, which took us to two incredible sites: Kealakekua Bay (Cook’s Monument) and Puʻuhonua O Hōnaunau. Both were stunning and full of marine life. From the moment we arrived, the customer service was excellent. Our guide, Shelly, was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and made us feel welcomed and at ease. The entire crew was professional and clearly passionate about what they do. The Kona snorkel tour was a must! At Cook’s Monument, we swam among an amazing variety of tropical fish . I felt like I was in an aquarium. The manta ray night tour was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Watching these gentle giants glide beneath us in the moonlit water was breathtaking. I don’t have pictures in the water because I didn’t bring inappropriate camera but the boat ride to our snorkeling sites was beautiful! Highly recommend Dolphin Discoveries to anyone visiting Kona. Truly one of the highlights of our trip!

We spent maybe 30 minutes in the water with the manta rays and saw several different ones - so close! Guides provided commentary for anyone interested. It was the highlight of our Big Island trip.

Great experience with Dolphin Discoveries all the way-veteran owned, knowledgable, friendly, and a small bonus was they’re more affordable than other places AND include a wetsuit top during the tour-this was great because we were cold by the end!! Experiencia fantástica: Amazing encounter. We were on the 6pm tour, and Isaiah was our in-water guide. As soon as we had stopped, there were mantas around the boat. We had a full tour boat, so it took all 3 groups a while to get in the water, but within minutes, there were a couple of rays swimming and eating around our floating lights. We stayed in the water, and Isaiah gave us some interesting information regarding the rays and their habits. We were able to get some good pictures and video of the mantas. The girls said they wanted to go again before we'd even returned to the docks. The staff was helpful, and it was well worth the time and funds. This is a tour we'd take again.

The rest of my family really wanted to go so I braved up and went These guides are the ABSOLUTE best! Before we even got into the water, the guides (Rhi & Jenny) had a calming energy about them and assured me they would be there if I needed anything while we were out in the water. Unfortunately, I did start to panic and asked to go back to the boat. Rhi was so quick to come help me and bring me back to the boat! After getting back on board, Capt Dennis & Isiah were amazing in making me feel comfortable and even shared some fun facts about the mantas! They pointed the mantas out so I could enjoy them from the boat as well! The rest of my family had an absolute blast! They really went above and beyond for me & I was so grateful they still made this an all time experience. You guys are great! Would totally recommend to anyone - even if you’re nervous!

I struggled a bit as I’m slightly (a little more than slightly) fearful of the water, but our assigned crew member Ree ree was checking on me, and made us all feel safe! We had 7-8 manta rays around us the majority of the time. Our water was warm. We could have stayed out there longer.

Experiencia fantástica: Our whole experience was awesome! We ended up at the second meeting spot first, and so we were late to getting our gear, but the shop was fantastic. They called us and helped us get to the right place so that we could get situated. They were quick with getting us fitted so we didn't miss any time in the water. Dennis was a fantastic captain. He gave us thorough details about the area that we snorkeled and then took us on a fun tour when my kids were done a little bit early with the snorkeling. He provided more of the island's history.

Seeing these manta rays up close in their natural habitat is one of the most magical things we have ever experienced. The Dolphin Discoveries staff were amazing. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The trip was well organized, everything was clearly communicated and they prioritized safety while assisting the group each step of the way. The guides were very knowledgeable and shared a lot of information along the way . We had an amazing time and highly recommend this experience!

We did the manta ray snorkeling with a different company but I wish we would have gone with dolphin discovery they take out a smaller amount of people and take you to a close manta ray viewing area. Experiencia negativa: We signed up for the Manta Ray night snorkel tour, and while we were fortunate to see the beautiful mantas, the overall experience did not meet our expectations. 1. The boat was overcrowded, making both the ride and the time spent in the water holding onto the light board quite uncomfortable—it felt like being packed in a can. I was repeatedly kicked by a nearby snorkeler who was struggling to float properly. Although a staff member noticed and attempted to address the issue, they ultimately allowed the person to stay in place, which continued to affect my experience. 2. Just minutes after entering the water, all three of us were stung. We later learned that the stings were caused by Portuguese Man-o-War. We immediately asked to be escorted back to the boat, but it took at least two minutes before a staff member began helping us. Instead of responding promptly, they asked unnecessary questions and acted as though they didn’t understand, despite our clear calls for help. Once back on the boat, I heard multiple other guests reporting stings and seeking assistance. A staff member even acknowledged seeing a Portuguese Man-o-War, and only then did the captain instruct the team to begin bringing everyone in. From my observation, it took another 10–15 minutes for them to officially end the tour. By that point, it seemed most people had been stung to some degree and were requesting vinegar while discussing symptoms with each other. While I understand that marine life and ocean conditions (which were quite choppy) are beyond anyone’s control, the way this situation was handled was troubling. The overcrowded boat and the slow, inadequate response to a serious safety concern could and should have been managed far more responsibly.

Experiencia fantástica: We had such a magical time today! We snorkeled two locations with Agnis, I believe. I highly recommend this tour and group. Small and personal the larger tours with a ton of people. I think we had maybe 13-15 people max on our boat. We got up close encounters with juvenile spinner dolphins! AND we swam with a reef shark. Excellent visibility, beautiful wildlife, fun boat rides with multiple stops on the way back to show us places of historic Hawaiian cultural significance along the coastline. It was a little stressful driving through the down pouring rain for about an hour from the Fairmont orchid to check in/get snorkeling gear, then drive to the boat pier, but it was worth it. Checkin staff & boat crew were wonderful & very accommodating.

Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely Unmissable: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience! We did the night snorkeling tour with Dolphin Discoveries Kona, and it was totally amazing! Captain Dennis and ReeRee took such great care of us, they were friendly, professional, and clearly passionate about what they do. The experience itself? Just wow. We had over nine massive manta rays gliding and looping gracefully beneath us. A few even brushed up against us with their bellies (we weren’t allowed to touch them, but they could touch us!). Being that close to these semi-wild, majestic creatures was surreal. Peaceful, awe-inspiring, and humbling all at once. If you’re in Kona, this is not just recommended — it’s unmissable in my humble opinion. Five stars. Don’t miss it. (Sorry, not photos as we were living the moment)

We had five Manta rays hanging out with us doing barrel rolls and swimming so close you could touch them (if it was legal to do so). It was an amazing experience. The captain and crew were awesome and very knowledgeable! They told us a lot about the Manta rays, their habitat, etc. Overall epic experience!

Experiencia fantástica: We spent most of our trip to the big island going back and forth with whether we wanted to book a Manta Ray tour or not. We finally decided to go for it, and I would have been SO disappointed if we didn’t. It was easily one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. Our Captains, Dan and Rob were great! They made the boat feel cool, calm, and collected while still exciting the group with jokes. We saw so many Manta Rays which was obviously such a cool experience… BUT, I think the highlight for me was listening to Gabe share facts about them throughout the session. He knew so much, and you could tell that he was super passionate about it. Bryce also made it an incredible experience and was so helpful when it came to make sure that we were safe. He was also so quick to swim around rescuing our pool noodles that helped our legs float. 10/10 experience. GREAT PRICING.

Jenny and Rita in the store, answered all my questions and shared so much about what to expect and put me and my husband at ease (first time snorkling) and helped me book. On the boat, the crew was amazing! Captains David and Robert (I hope I got their names right), and in-water team Eve, Shelly, and Bryce. In the water, the crew set us up to float, and educated us on the manta rays and could even point them each out by name. Apparently our outing was lucky seeing 9-10 different mantas! Absolutely unbelievable. The videos are unreal and they don't even do the experience justice. Just amazing! I thanked Shelly again when she was walking back to her car, and she was so kind as to stop and talk with us about how special it was to see so many at once. She said there was one she didn't recognize, and with mantas being such intelligent, social creatures, thought they might have been gathering to check out their new friend. So cool! Got bumped a few times (5 yrs good luck for each) - Vegas rules as you can’t touch them. The crew was amazing and very knowledgeable. At first we didn't see any Mantas, but within minutes the crew found them and we had over 25-30 Mantas pass by. Completely unbelievable experience. Experiencia fantástica: Went on the 6PM Manta night dive. We had an 8 year old and a 10 year old with us. Process was easy. Everyone on shore was very helpful from the meet up point where we got our gear right up to the boat launch where we met the crew. I am not sure if we had rougher waters than usual or if what we experienced was typical. My kids thought it was quite rough, but the crew did a great job with them in and out of the water. Our crew leader was Ri Ri (sorry about the spelling). She was so helpful and passed on a lot of information about the animals. The manta were great! So big and so close. The experience was awesome! The only disappointing thing was the sad looking tip jar at the end of the night on the boat. The crew was incredible and deserved better from the clientele. Don't cheap out people! Google "proper tips for guides in Hawaii" before you book these types of tours!

Experiencia fantástica: We booked our snorkel experience over the phone with RIta, who listened to our concerns and limitations for my wife, who has MS. After discussing with RIta, we decided to book with Dolphin and are glad that we did. Other providers I talked with were not near as pleasant and forthcoming as she was. We had a great time. Captain Rob was pleasant and very helpful in making sure my wife was able to fully participate. He stressed safety for all passangers. He played great classic rock music while traveling to and from the snorkel location. All in all, it was a great activity and I recommend Dolphin because of the people with whom we interacted with.

Experiencia fantástica: Jenn, Bryce,Nathan were all amazing. They were honest that no tour was the same and we were blessed to have one manta Ray that just kept some to us. She even went to th boat when we were boarding to say good bye. It was a lot of good information and everyone made sure we were safe and having fun.

Experiencia negativa: Please stay away from them. Nothing fun about it. They cut our trip in half and then did not refund the other half. They provide you for $40. Go pro rent but it's only 15 GB of memory in it so you can record 10 minutes They're shady and lying people. I was calling them about the refund and they told me they will look into it and hang up on me without even asking for my name. You work hard for your vacation. Don't let people without organizational skills ruin it for you

Experiencia fantástica: Did a Manta Ray and morning Captain Cook snorkel. The Manta Ray snorkel had too many people on it IMO. Someone kept losing their pool noodle and it caused us to have to move the light board. I have never been seasick but felt nausea after the experience. With that being said, it was an AMAZING experience! Captain Dennis and Agnes was great on the morning snorkel. They were patient with my 6 year old — her 1st time snorkeling. Great information given.

Bryce was very fun and informative. The way the company has the tour set up is very easy and straight forward, making it a smooth two hour adventure. Experiencia fantástica: Seeing the manta rays at night was a surreal experience. I can see why they are considered sacred. It was epic. Our whole crew was great. Shelly was fab. She was so informative, helpful and kind. We checked in at the main office, drove down to the boat. You have to park up the road and walk in about 5-10 min. Then you pop on your wetsuit vest, get on your snorkel mask and tube, which are all provided. There is space in the seats on the boat for a backpack etc. Bring a go pro or phone in a bag if you have the for pics and videos. Captain drives out into the dark night and then when Shelly tells you, you slide into the water with your snorkel and grab onto the light board. The mantas just came as soon as they saw the light! I kept having to remember to breath and relax my arms because it was a little cold in March but not bad at all. Shelly pulled us around where we needed to go. It was a little choppy the night we went but we just held onto the board, put some noodles at our feet so we could make sure not to touch the mantas and we floated! The mantas just swam like we used to when we were little doing backflips in the water. They came so close that I felt I had to suck in my stomach! I would say they were maybe 4 inches from my body. It was amazing. Then Shelly called us out and we headed to the boat one at a time and climbed up the ladder and headed back to the dock. Try it! It was awesome.

After doing the Manta Ray tours several times, I truly appreciated how well-scheduled and thought out Dolphin Discoveries is. The boat ride was safe, comfortable and short (thanks Captain Dennis) which is great for anyone that suffers from sea-sickness or is short on time. The guides were super hospitable, friendly and funny (thanks Bryce!). And the Manta Rays put on a spectacular show! Highly recommend!

Our group of six friends will be talking about this for a long time. From start to finish, the staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and full of positive energy. They made sure everyone felt safe, comfortable, and excited—even those of us who were a bit nervous at first. The guides were super motivating and clearly passionate about what they do. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and they shared a lot of interesting facts about manta rays and the ocean. The experience itself was magical—floating under the stars while these graceful giants danced beneath us was surreal and breathtaking. Everything was well-organized and professional, with just the right balance of fun and safety. We couldn’t have asked for a better night or a better crew. Highly recommend this experience if you're visiting the Big Island—it's truly one-of-a-kind!

Experiencia fantástica: We had the absolute best time! The crew is very helpful and clear in their instructions, you are always aware of what is going to happen. At the same time they know how to spread a good vibe. Everyone knows that they love their jobs. Can only be recommended this company. The drive to see the mantas is not that long, so risk for seasickness is low. Everyone still worried should just take ginger beforehand, that was enough for me to not have any problems at all. Even if you are not the fondest of the ocean this tour still is for you, since it requires minimal swimming and you just hold on to a board. When we had to wait to get off the boat due to other boats infront of us they played cool music and made this time go by really quick. Highly recommend this company!

Friendly and stopped to tell us about some sights. Kayley was very nice and helpful too. She made a point of talking to all of the groups and making sure everyone was comfortable. Experiencia positiva: **3-Star Review for Dolphin Discoveries - Night Manta Ray Tour** I recently did the night manta ray tour with Dolphin Discoveries, and while the experience itself was incredible, the overall logistics left a lot to be desired. The biggest issue was the check-in process. First, you have to check in at their store, and then drive about 10 minutes down to the harbor. This is not a huge inconvenience, but the real issue is that you’re required to check in an hour before the tour starts. After that, you end up standing around for over 45 minutes at the harbor just waiting for the boat. This was frustrating, especially since the tour was advertised as 2 hours long, but the actual time spent with the manta rays was only about 25 minutes. So, when you factor in the long wait times, the experience ends up feeling much shorter than expected. While the tour itself was amazing, and I would absolutely recommend doing the night manta ray experience, I would suggest choosing a different tour operator. The check-in process really needs to be streamlined, as it added unnecessary time to the overall experience. Unfortunately, because of this, I won’t be using Dolphin Discoveries again in the future.

Experiencia fantástica: The entire staff was so friendly and professional! This was true from the front desk employees at the shop all the way to the crew and tour guides. Our guides, Eve and Shelly, were very knowledgeable and personable. Some people in our group were freaking out a bit in the water, but Shelly was very calm. The experience itself is insane. Photos and videos don’t even do it justice. You just gotta go.

Experiencia positiva: We did an evening mantra ray excursion. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. There are some things we wished we were aware of as their website adverises this as “mesmerizing”, “thrilling excursion” , “nothing short of magical”, but our experience didn’t live up to the hype. This is billed as a two hour experience but you need to understand that an hour is for checking in at a nearby strip mall, driving to the boat ramp, finding parking on the street and waiting to get on the boat. There are other companies that will meet you at the boat ramp. Some people didn’t read the instructions and showed up at the boat ramp without going to the mall to get the wetsuit top and mask/snorkel first. There is no parking lot at the boat ramp so you find a spot along the road where possible and walk down. As this is a popular excursion for this and other companies so the boat ramp is very busy and parking can be somewhat far away. Upon mustering about two dozen people we were split into smaller groups to board the boat (front, left, right, back) and share a “light board” which shines a blue light into the water in the hopes of attracting the manta rays. The boat goes out a few hundred yards perhaps and then everyone jumps into the water and float horizontally looking down with a noodle as your ankles. We spent perhaps thirty minutes in this position nor seeing anything until suddenly three manta rays swooped close by for about thirty seconds or so, and then were gone. Immediately thereafter it was time to head back. Some of the guides were better than others at giving educational talks as we were in the water waiting to see the manta rays. Ours was on the quiet side. Several guests had issues with leaking masks which the guides attempted to address, so would recommend to bring your own snorkel & mask if you have. Being a wildlife viewing experience there is no guarantee of seeing anything, and we don’t know what it typical but it seemed a lot of time and effort for thirty seconds. Would we do this again? Possibly but with a smaller group and where you could meet at the boat ramp.

Dennis the captain, Preston and the other guides Shelly and Kennedy kept the group involved.. and very safe. We went on Feb 18 and it was pretty choppy waves.. but had a great time and saw many of the beautiful Mantas! Thanks so much!! Highly recommend this group!!

We were not so lucky with whales but spotted two just before the end of the tour. One negative was that you have to checking in their office in the shopping mall and then drive to the port. The boats were late, so it would beuch easier to meet an hour later at the port

Experiencia fantástica: BOOK THIS!!! Dolphin Discoveries was an amazing company to use for our Manta Ray Night Snorkel. They were very friendly, fun and had a great energy to get us excited to see the animals. We had Bryce and Jenny as our snorkel leads. They were very knowledgable about the rays and gave good learning points about them throughout the trip. They make sure youre a good swimmer, but you don’t swim THAT much. Just to and from the boat and floatation device. My husband was a little nervous but they made him feel very comfortable. We saw around 7-12 rays!!! It was a feb trip, which they said is prime timing for this kind of excursion. They come up SO close to the float that they graze you slightly. It was truly a special unique experience to see such gentle giants up close. I felt very safe the whole time. They are very clear on rules and what to do/not do.

Experiencia positiva: Our first time doing a night snorkel to see the manta rays, an AMAZING experience! We saw at last 5-6 giant manta rays, coming right up to us over and over again. As great as this was, it’s likely a one time thing for me, as it takes a great deal of energy and strength to hold onto the light bar in rough water, plus dropping into the water by sliding down the side of the boat, in sub-par mask and snorkel, no fins, and then swim to/from the light bar (not far, but rough water). They provided a nice wetsuit top which was great, but no fins, no protective ends on the snorkel, and a pool noodle as a flotation device. It was a bit overwhelming.

The snorkel spot was very good next to the Captain Cook monument. They provided snacks, drinks, and pineapple back in the boat afterward. It’s exactly the experience we were hoping for our kids

Experiencia negativa: We booked a tour for the night manta ray snorkeling, but unfortunately, it was canceled twice due to bad weather, which we completely understand as safety should always come first. However, what was unacceptable was the timing of the cancellation. They chose to cancel just 10 minutes before we were scheduled to arrive, and by that point, we were already in an Uber on our way to the meeting location. This caused a lot of wasted time and unnecessary hassle, as we now had to pay for an Uber both ways for absolutely nothing. A little more notice would have made a big difference.

Experiencia fantástica: My family of four booked a private charter with Dolphin Discoveries. My husband called numerous times with endless questions and he was always greeted warmly and with sincere Aloha hospitality. Our captain, Shelley, was so helpful in guiding us to decide where to go and what to do in our four hour timeframe. Along the way, Captain Shelley provided us with so much information on the Hawaiian culture - it was really beautiful to learn about island history. Snorkeling at the Captain Cook monument and Two-Step was simply gorgeous. So many beautiful and colorful fish and other sea life. Knowing of my desire to see a whale, he stayed in touch with other boat captains, and when he received word of a humpback sighting he gave us the option to try and track it down. Although it seemed fruitless for a while, just as we were about to head back to the harbor, a humpback came up for breath mere feet from our boat! It was a moment my family and I (and I think Captain Shelley) will never forget! Can’t recommend Dolphin Discoveries and Captain Shelley enough! Mahalo!
