Experiencia positiva: It’s a good store and a good source for fish and fresh-killed mice. It’s definitely dark and dingy, but they are very knowledgeable. My big gripe is that their phone is always busy (in 2025!!!) so it’s impossible to call ahead to confirm their stock when you want to buy a particular fish.

Experiencia fantástica: I've been frequenting this store for at least a decade now. I'd have to say hands down one of the best fresh and saltwater aquarium stores in Maryland. I'll venture out to eastern Maryland and metro Virginia in search of special acquisitions. Tropical Lagoon somehow always has the right selection and best prices. Its probably the owner's close attention to detail and his experience coming through. Best DC Metro/MD aquarium store imho.

The store is brighter now and does not smell anymore! Steve is a funny guy who will help you. He is an encyclopedia. The fish and corals are totally beautiful.

Experiencia positiva: TLDR: 4 star rating because I am a regular here. However, overall scores are pretty much 3 stars across the board. They have decent variety, the fish are comparably healthy to other aquariums I have purchased from, and the price is also comparable yet unremarkable. I mostly come to this particular aquarium because they regularly stock the stuff that I like to replenish occasionally. The prices here are about the same as other prominent aquariums in the general area. The selection is sufficient, but they have a split selection between fresh water and salt water so you may not quite see the fresh water variety you expect from other places. Customer service is very casual and largely just ok.

Experiencia negativa: I came here wanting to get some fish but sadly after they died within the stores 3 day policy. They didn't have any other fish I wanted but they made a big fuss over a refund and told me that they won't sell me anymore fish. Thats fine because other stores just give you a refund instead of arguing a refund. You're still a shitty store. Prices and options are still no different than Petsmart and Petco. Plus, your associates were still willing to sell me some fish even after all these years. The one star still stands.

Experiencia fantástica: Was pleased to find this local merchant. It’s just down the street and parking is usually easy. Friendly staff, although I suspect one of them thinks my pet spiders are ridiculous (he sometimes laughs when I purchase crickets for my spooders). Would highly recommend if you need insects, fish or equipment. Great location and great staff!

Experiencia fantástica: Not just a great variety of fresh and saltwater fish, also shrimp, crabs, frogs, coral. They seem to be in good health, fed premium food (I watched), and well-displayed. Tanks aren't over full, and tank sizes fit the fish, including several gorgeous giant tanks. Enjoyed an hour there despite only getting a few fancy shrimp and some endlers, which have been healthy and happy (update: two years later, still alive). Helpful staff were gentle with my fish. Definitely returning to set up my next community tank. Best fish store near DC.

Experiencia fantástica: This place has a great variety of freshwater and marine life and supplies for your tanks. I've been a customer here since January 2022, which is when I bought my first tank. 5 tanks later, Tropical Lagoon is my go-to fish store. Customer service (i.e., greetings) may not be their strong suit, but they do a great job keeping healthy fish and making great recommendations. I don't hold the lack of customer service against the store because everyone's personality varies. Some employees are people persons, while others are not. The owner is awesome though. He has a good memory and treats his returning customers with sales and an occasional free goodie. Future fish/aquarist enthusiasts who plan to patronize the store should ask for help from Steve (very knowledgeable), Mark (superb customer service), or Maribel (breath of fresh air/personable) who in my experience have been consistent with customer service. All in all, I've had a great experience at this place. I would highly recommend you give them a try. Lastly, the prices are also the cheapest I have found in Maryland. You'll get a great bang for your buck.

Experiencia negativa: Horrible experience. I want buy a fish tank and some for the tank for my son birthday but the owner ignored me. He was in the phone and he didn't bother even to greet me or to ask me wait. I had to leave and will never come back.

Experiencia negativa: They may have a good variety of fish, but they don't take care of them, they don't take responsibility for false information on how to take care of the fish, and they have terrible attitudes which doesn't make up for the terrible way they treat people. Unfortunately our pufferfish died, we had bought two about 5 days ago, and once we put them in the tank it was very obvious that one of them had a weird fin, the fish was also very slow and barely moved which caused concern. However we decided to give it a little time and the fin went to normal however the behavior stayed the same. We also noticed that one of them kept attacking the other which was also a concern but after a day they started to be fine, but the fish with a poor fin never came to the front of the tank like the healthy one did. We found out that since the weaker fish was slow and wasn't very good at running away that it was easy for her to be a target. And then yesterday the fish barely moved and stayed in one spot of the tank the whole time. We then called and told them that our fish wasn't moving a lot and they started to point the fault at us. They then said to come in for a water test and that they would decide then. When we got there, it had just turned 5 pm and they started laughing asking if we got a ticket cause they knew we were far away from them. We then told them the situation again and they did water tests and said that it was due to overfeeding. However the man at the store told me to give half of one bloodworm packet everyday, but when we told them that that was what they instructed they said we were lying and that he said very OTHER day. However i bought the fish with my grandmother and even she agrees he had said everyday. And then they said that the fish was dead, and the lady started laughing and mocking my dead fish about how it was dead. I'm a minor and I found this really disturbing that they were mocking my dead fish when I was obviously upset about it. Their attitude also seemed to change when we told them that the products they recommended to us for the water we already had, they seemed to be more hostile. I apologize for the long story, but I felt that this needed to be said for other people planning on buying here. I would definitely not recommend. Edit: I forgot to add this but the next day we went to get our water tested somewhere else and they told us that our nitrite levels were a little high but other than that everything was fine, they said the fish was probably already sick or was old.

With a very large variety. His coral is so beautiful I just picked up a Duncan from him today. I will definitely be back in there to fill my salt water reef tank. Definitely go see Steve. Very nice gentleman with a lot of knowledge.

It is similar to Petco in the sense that they have a wide variety of fish, but the problem lies in their lack of quarantine procedures. Tanks are often observed with ich and velvet. If you decide to make a purchase from this store, it is imperative to implement a mandatory quarantine and treatment process. Failure to do so may result in introducing harmful diseases to your tank.

Father and son (I'm guessing) are hard at work keeping their hundreds (thousands?) of fish in pristine water. Once you are ready to make your purchase though they drop what they're doing and are super friendly. The owner caught a hill stream loach for me like it's easy - it's not! Will 100% be returning to this establishment.

Experiencia negativa: I would never ever purchase anything from this location. To start the filters inside the tanks are way to strong for all of the fish. The fish are blowing and moving all over the tanks. There is not a single spot inside of any of the tanks where the fish can have a calm spot. All of the tanks are dirty, dead plants in most all of them and things are not attached properly. To add in several tanks including the salt water have dead fish just floating all over. On my way out of the store I noticed a bearded dragon inside of a tank on the floor surrounded by junk the store has to offer. No light setup and no water. This place is very neglectful and I’d never recommend it to anyone. You are better off getting the same fish but cheaper at your local Petco or Petsmart. This place really needs to be closed down.

Experiencia fantástica: It was my first time going to Tropical Lagoon Aquarium, it is not a huge store, but they had a great selection, and some unexpected surprises, my buddy and I, found fish that we didn't expect to see, they also had a good variety of supplies, and I love the tortoises in the back of the store. I'm glad I made the trip.

Experiencia fantástica: Was looking for a local mom and pop aquarium since the big box stores usually don't have what I'm looking for. The reviews from another place led me here. I was shocked when I arrived as I've driven past this place a million times and never noticed it once smh. If your looking for that petsmart or petco experience your not going to find that here, but that's not a bad thing. It's small and lacks the organization of said stores but you get a better experience, better quality of fish and more variety. Staff is always busy helping a customer so have a little patience and you'll be fine. I'll definitely return to this store.

Experiencia fantástica: I stop here occasionally to pick live plants and other materials for my fire bellied toad paludarium. The plants are always healthy and the livestock in my paludarium enjoy the plants I get from here. The only fish I’ve ever gotten from here were some cherry shrimp who were healthy and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and gives fantastic advice about everything you purchase here. I’m not super knowledgeable on fish, but they carry some beautiful little guys along with axolotls, tadpoles, and various pond fish. If you’re new to the hobby or have been doing the aquarium hobby for years, this is probably the best place to go in the DMV area.

In terms of the practical matters - the prices are very good, especially for the auxillary items like airline tubing or gravel or decorations, and of course the fish. The fish plants and inverts have all been in good health, no disease or anything, which unfortunately I've run into from other local shops. But more importantly, you really get a good dynamic with the people at Tropical Lagoon, they love to help and give good sound advice. You can look up anything online but experience is worth more than any reddit post, and miles ahead of what you'll get at PetSmart/Petco. Steve knows what to do in pretty much every situation, and he'll figure out how to get things sorted, he's unbelievably knowledgeable and personable. I was thumbing through a magazine by the counter and he not only let me take it, he gave me a brand new sealed copy on nano fish to take home. Two weeks later I asked if he had celestial pearl danios and he remembered that the CPD was on the cover of the magazine he gave me. Really an unbelievably great guy, can't be more happy with the place. Thank you for everything you do and provide. It's such a cool spot, I'm always excited to go back and see what's swimming about :) - CM

Beautiful fish that are actually healthy (unlike most big retail) Small store but so much personality. Always used come here for my crickets and mice. Still come for the fish. Staff are so helpful and welcoming, they always remember faces. Can't think of anything to complain about. Staff are also very quick to help you out can't think of a time where I had to wait over 2 mins or so. They practically have everything and a very cute tortoise in the back during the winter. Will always recommend this store to friends with new reptiles, amphibians, etc for feeders. Just remember not to sit in Lucas' Chair :)))

If it's not in stock, the owner will happily add what you want in his next order. Stocked with Ecotech Marine, Apex, Nyos, Red Sea products and more. Freshwater stock is great, too.

Experiencia fantástica: I love this place. My son n I was there on Wed. We called 1 wk ago we call the store and talk to Dustin. We talk about a on going water problem n the fish tank. He walk us through the problem on the phone to rectified it. He told us to bring everything we have (supplies) and a water sample to the store. We stop n talk to Dustin. The staff is friendly and a delight. Dustin was very helpful, kind, knowledgeable, and perfessional. He did a water test and gave us the supplies we need to fix the problem. My son call him when we got home to ask more questions. He was polite and patience. We was very pleased and happy.

Experiencia negativa: In pass one year, I had spend $3638.9 at this store. Today I ask for restroom, the owner wont let me. I will never come to this store again. I was able to use their restroom at least twice during covid. In addition, with amount of money I spend at this store, I learned quality of live goods wont meet my expectation.With these bad experiences. I rather go to Blue Ribbon Koi in VA. Further, but better quality there. Worth the drive. Sorry if you dont understand.

Experiencia fantástica: This shop is just over any hour away from me, and I was reluctant initially to make the trip. But wow, was it ever worth it! Their tanks appear well kept and the fish look healthy. I picked up about 7 cichlids and they are all doing well! The staff was extremely nice and helped me identify some species I couldn’t make out. They had unique varieties that I hadn’t come across before, and that was a really nice surprise. I’m already looking forward to my next trip! (Bring change so you can feed the parking meter )

Experiencia negativa: Would not recommend due to a terribly rude and shocking interaction. A friend had an experience entering the store with her service animal, which a pet dog in the store then attacked (successfully bit, not badly), despite their sign saying "no pets." When speaking to the staff (store/pet owner?) present, they berated/accosted my friend and refused to allow her well-behaved, certified service animal to remain in the store. Beyond this blatant disregard for federal law protecting service animals and their handlers, this is an obviously hypocritical standard ("no pets" posted yet a pet was present) and resulted in a rude and jarring interaction. For whatever reason this took place - unaware of a service animal's role, a bad day, misunderstanding, whatever - this was totally inappropriate, unacceptable for a business, and should not have happened.

Experiencia positiva: Interesting little place. Some healthy looking fish amid what appears to be managed chaos in the basement of a strip of stores on Georgia Avenue, close to 495. Pay parking around the side. Various selection of fresh and salt water specimens, reasonably priced. It was my first time in the shop, I wanted to pick up several fish but started with 2 nice looking discus. If they do well I will return for more. So far so good. Update - I made a second trip and collected 2 more discus and added 2 electric blue Acara as well. Same as the first time, great service, good price, healthy fish.

I must say everything in here is so nice and stylish looking, The fish are in care and I can tell the owner put Alot of hard work into this. I have not seen everything yet but man! Experiencia negativa: I was very enthusiastic to find another local fish store in the area. However, there’s two issues I immediately found here — their per covid occupancy is not being upheld. It is a VERY small are and there will be more than 7 ppl in there at a time. Second as an Axolotl lover I’m always happy to see them in stores PROPERLY TAKEN CARE OF. After viewing it seems the owner/keepers are not properly aware of how to take care of them which of course can lead to misinformation being told to customers. Axolotl’s need low light and cold water, FINE SAND substrate or bare bottom. After asking an employee why they had corse substrate there considering it’s dangerous for axies since they can get impacted when swallowing, they instantly changed their mood and told me “it’s fine, only dangerous when they’re young” which is not true. I let them know the substrate should be changed but it seems their attitude was not having it. Axolotl’s are easily endangered by inbreeding and misinformation of care. As a smaller local fish store I would’ve expected them to have good research on the animals they keep. Edit: Seems the owner also doesn’t know any form of gravel is not appropriate for the animal in question. Very fine sand is able to go through the animal while gravel can build up and impact them. The substrate is an issue because axies swallow like vacuums and will dig around. They have bad eyesight and if they deem something near by as food they’ll snap at it. It also seems owner thinks years of service makes them without flaws to simple mistakes which can be easily corrected for a business that’s been working for that many years.

Experiencia fantástica: I searched high and low for the fish I wanted and finally found them here. They were healthy and happy little guys and are doing great many months later. I drive all the way from Shirlington in Virginia to shop there because they're the best inside the Beltway (and possibly for miles outside of it too!). The big box stores just don't cut it if you're a serious aquarist.

Others seem to be disappointed that their emotional needs aren't met by the service.... perhaps these folks got lost? This is a family owned fish store that's been in our neighborhood for-EVER, which speaks for itself. They painted an army of bright orange Nemos all over their entryway so you can find it under the church - where else can you find fish next to Godliness? Experiencia fantástica: Most of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, they answered my questions with ease and were happy to help out. The reason for my 1-star review however, is that the specific person that helped me, bagged and sold me the wrong type of fish, which is just embarrassing. I had been calling for weeks asking about Chili Rasbora, and when they finally came in, they sold me ember tetras by mistake. I contacted them once I noticed, will update this review if they handle this well. UPDATE: As you can see by the replies, they care about fixing the situation, so I updated my review to 5 stars.

Experiencia negativa: Was my first time there its a lil hard to find though the front door is covered in Nemo fish lol. It is a tiny store they badly need a upgrade for more space felt like I was in someone's over packed basement of course because of all the tanks it smells odd and is very humid. The staff were very helpful and polite, but someone does bring there dog with them to work and he (the dog) randomly barks alot. So I wouldn't return because I know of better stores.
