Experiencia negativa: I have bought from here a couple times. The livestock is hit or miss. The chilli rasboras I got from here were definitely not okay. One died in the bag during the drive home. The others perished soon after since it was apparent they were infected with ich. I was not offered a refund for the chilli rasboras despite a clearly bad batch. I would shop here with caution. Edit: Reply to Owners - I called the same day to report that the fish died in the bag but was told I would only be refunded if I brought the body physically back (a 45 minute drive from me). I brought up the issue again today in store with no response from the salesperson assisting me. Hence I felt the need to review the situation.
I see your order from today but do not see Chili Rasbora on it? I do see where you purchased three back on June 20. If one died in the bag, did you send pics to the store? We do issue credit if that unfortunately happens but I’m not aware of this situation. If that happened we always asks for pictures or some proof of the fish not making it. Then credit can be given. If you can reach out to Matt or John tomorrow and we can resolve this issue and give credit. We were both there today but did not hear anything about this.

The tanks are consistently well-maintained, and the staff is both friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced hobbyist, don’t hesitate to stop in. Highly recommend!

Experiencia negativa: My Fiancé bought various fish multiple times. The first order he made 2 out of 5 fish arrived dead. Upscale gave him credits back to order more fish to replace the ones that were dead. After his second order, all fish arrived alive and appeared remotely healthy, however they were extremely skinny and pale. It is now 5 days later and all 7 fish that were ordered are dead, and have introduced ICK and an unknown bacterial infection that have now killed 3 of or pre-existing fish that we have had for over 2 years that were extremely healthy. We have chosen not to use anymore credits for more sick fish, upscale also will not give us our money back. Order from this store with caution if you have healthy fish in an established tank. I am attaching images of our pre-existing fish that are now extremely sick.

Experiencia negativa: This place is awful. When I walked in I was never greeted or welcomed. A smart ass kid said water tests are $4.99 eying my bag of water I was holding. They acted like they could care less. This place doesn’t even deserve 1 star.
You literally walked in and came straight to the counter and asked for a water test. He said water tests are 4.99 and then that was it. You said you were going to walk around the store and then left.

Experiencia fantástica: I have been wanting to visit this establishment for quite some time. They always have the most unusual corals, fish, macro algae, and invertebrates. Some stuff you didn’t even know existed. I made the two hour drive to do so. I was not disappointed in the slightest. I was helped straightaway with great and helpful information as I shopped. I left there with some great stuff. If you’re questioning whether or not to patronise here, I assure you it is worth the visit. Kudos Upscale Aquatics. I took the day off and it was worth the four hour round trip.

Experiencia negativa: I really like the people who works at upscale. But I think I will no longer buy any livestock at this store. Unfortunately I have had three bad experiences in the past year. Two different sets of fish, all sourced from upscale have ended up dying from camallanus worms. Another pair of fish I got from them, one of the two showed severe signs of disfigurement after growing up. I don’t super blame them for the disfigured fish as it was difficult to tell when the fish was a juvenile. The worms though I am saying occurred due to a lack of quarantine procedure. I do my own quarantine when adding to an established tank, but when I get the entire stocking from one place I usually don’t until I see an issue. Only purchasing fish from locations with a quarantine procedure moving forward. Will still buy hardscape and food and water treatment at upscale and like I said employees have always been very nice and helpful. Edit to respond: The two pairs of fish with the worms were, first two Bolivian rams, I treated with levamisole as well as nematol. Lost both of the rams but saved the remainder of the tank which was just a few rasbora and a farlowella. New tank no cross contamination as I have separate buckets, siphons, nets etc for each, was a pair of apistogramma macmasteri which just had three otos in the tank which also came from you. Same routine levamisole and nematol, lost the apistos saved the otos. I understand you guys are unable to quarantine the fish, due to the time and space and cost. But with Dans fish online doing such a vigorous quarantine and having ichthyologists on staff, I am going to elect to use them for fish moving forward
Can you tell me what fish had these worms? I did not find any purchases since November and want to make sure what fish had the worms. Unfortunately with the volume we cannot quarantine every fish that comes in the store, while in the store we do have medications in the systems and also feed medicated foods. But unfortunately a true 3 month quarantine is something that we cannot do as it’s nearly impossible with the volume of fish and space we have. But I would like to track the fish that had the worms so I can monitor the suppliers. We only buy from trusted suppliers and if both times the fish that had worms came from the same supplier we need to be cautious with purchasing more from them.
Experiencia positiva: I've been to Upscale Aquatics five times now, and every trip, I find myself leaving with either Caridina shrimp, some nice Nerite snails, or, like my last visit, some Ruby Tetras. On 2/09, I purchased five Ruby Tetras and housed them in my three-year-old Caridina tank. Note that this tank has only ever housed Caridina shrimp—no other fish had been introduced until the Ruby Tetras. Fast forward to 2/12, and I've already lost one Tetra. No worries, losses happen! But then I noticed ich on the remaining Tetras. I went back to Upscale and explained my situation to an employee. When we checked the exact tank my Ruby Tetras came from, we could clearly see ich on the remaining fish. The employee confirmed that they had noticed the ich before but, since these Tetras are housed with their Caridina shrimp, they couldn't dose copper—understandable. However, they were aware of the ich and still sold them to me... The very helpful employee spoke to whoever was in charge, and when they returned, I was told there was nothing they could do for me. Well, actually, they did do one thing—sell me the $15 medication! Listen, I get it. Tons of fish come into the store all the time, and things happen. What leaves a bad taste in my mouth is that we could visibly see the remaining Tetras sick with ich in their store, yet they "can't do anything for me." Unfortunately, I'll have to end my business with Upscale at this point. A true shame, given their wide selection, but I can only imagine how much more upset I'd be if this had happened with a very expensive fish. Edit (2/13): I heard back from John regarding the Tetras. I explained my story from the beginning so there was no discrepancies. He apologized for how it was handled and asked that I keep them posted on the fish. He assured me they would work with me if the fish do not pull through. I'm comfortable with updating my review and stating I will do return business with them. John took responsibility over the phone and that's what I was wanting from my visit on 2/12. I'd like to reiterate and say that a large store like this will eventually have some fish with issues. This is completely understandable and expected. My main issue was how it was originally handled but they have remedied that.
Justin can you please contact me, Matt at the store. I’m unaware of this incident and no one spoke to me in regards to this situation. Also I was not aware of the Ruby tetras having ich myself so will need to check on that as well. Thanks.

There is also a great selection of live plants. Bob was especially patient and knowledgeable and provided multiple solutions to help nurture my sick fish back to health. Very knowledgeable staff that don't mind taking there time to help you. They always answer there phone's when you call and get back to you quick thru there social media messages. Experiencia fantástica: Have lots of saltwater and fresh water fish, corals plants food and chemicals, it was a little far from home but totally worth every minute, this will be my go to spot for fresh water fish and plants. Lots of big fish as well, all employees were available and ready to assist and answer questions.

Experiencia fantástica: This place is awesome with a variety of choices of fish, from freshwater to saltwater. Yes, they have saltwater tanks. I haven’t started my saltwater tank yet but the guys here a very knowledgeable and have answers to pretty much every question. This has been my go to spot outside of commercial pet stores for a few years. Lots of aquatic supplies and fish. Their prices are pretty comparable also! I’ve gotten mini guppies, mini African clawed frogs, snails, shrimp and more from here. Many which are still thriving!
Experiencia positiva: one of the top fish stores that will have exotic fish. i liked the old location better because of the parking. prices are decent, most of the fishes are healthy, its rare to see one sick or dead. i would like to see more imported flower horns, gold fishes, axolotls, bettas, guppies and kili fish. also balloon rams.

Experiencia fantástica: This is the new location for upscale aquatics. They have around 600 fish tanks. They needed more space and moved here around a year ago. My husband was so excited when I pointed this store out when we dropped off our car across the street to do collision repairs. He immediately drove into this parking lot and had to see these fish tanks. The guys that run this place are super cool and ready to answer any of your questions and get you started. Experiencia fantástica: If you’re an aquarist and you’re not shopping here, what are you doing? I’ve visited stores across the country and this place is hands down the best shop I have been to. The variety of fish is second to none for a store front. They get in extremely rare fish that I cant get my hands on anywhere else online or in person.

Experiencia fantástica: I’ve only been in twice but have been blown away by the plant selection (quality, price, and variety), and will definitely be back. I have other lfs closer, but this one is worth the hour drive. All of the staff have been super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I’ve come in with a friend who has saltwater tanks, I have fresh; we both enjoy stopping in just to see what they have and can’t leave empty handed. I didn’t get his name, but the guy who has helped me with freshwater plants is phenomenal and super knowledgeable/helpful, and all of the plants I’ve purchased are doing great. Saw several different salt water invertebrates and critters last week that were so cool, I was thinking about setting up a marine tank for the first time after having fresh for over a decade. Prices on hard scapes are also super fair, they have a good variety and nice pieces, for fresh and salt. Some of the best deals I’ve ever seen in store on used tanks and stands (cheaper than marketplace even) last time I was in. Pictures of my 10 gallon show how much they’ve grown in 2 months (lily bulb from there keeps putting out plants, hygros have done great); plants from Upscale Aquatics just seem to adjust to my tanks better and grow so much more quickly than ones I’ve gotten elsewhere. Upgrading 2 betta tanks to 20 gallons soon and will absolutely be in for new plants and rock/wood.

The team suggested that I get some tetras instead for my 20 gallon shrimp/snail tank. They are such fun and pretty little fish! Great addition to my tank. Thanks for the knowledgeable suggestion! We are enjoying them.

It's a bit intimidating when first walking in, but no matter when I've gone, I've felt welcomed. There is a TON of beautiful saltwater black light aquatic life there, too.

Experiencia fantástica: By far my favorite LFS I have been to. The staff is very knowledgeable. They carry a mass of variety and can special order. Definitely in a different league than petco/petsmart/etc. They also ship or can pump the bag with extra oxygen for a long car ride.
Experiencia negativa: I have had my 40 gallon tank for 6 years now and have had very little issues with new fish. Decided to try this place and will never be going again. Bought 80 dollars worth of plants and fish and all but one have died in less then 2 weeks. 2 of the fish introduced ich to the tank killing 3 of my other fish. Plus not to mention the man that helped me seemed to be annoyed by the fact I was asking him to do his job. Never again.
Can you please contact us directly in regards to this? I can’t find you in the system. This review doesn’t sound right especially with have plants not being able to survive. I would like to know which employee assisted you.
Experiencia negativa: I called ahead to confirm they had what I was looking for in stock. Once I arrived at the store, they were absolutely slammed & it took about fifteen minutes for me to flag down an employee in the back of the store to help me. I explained that I had called, and told him what I was looking for. He looked extremely confused, then told me he would “be right back,” he then left and proceeded to check out a line of at least ten customers and once again, I was left waiting, with no assistance. After another ten minutes of searching for an employee to help me, I just left. If the parking lot is full, don’t bother. You’ll be there forever
I called my staff to follow up with this review and the sales rep that assisted you said he did help you and showed you the betta that you called about. He mentioned to you that he was in the middle of bagging fish for two other groups and that he would be right with you after he would finish with them. Once he was done, he looked around the store and couldn’t find you until he walked into the parking lot and seen you. He then tried to ask if you still needed help but ignored him and left. With that being said, I’m sorry for your experience today and that you felt unhelped, we do try to assist every customer as fast as we can get to them.
Experiencia fantástica: Great shop! Wide selection of salt and freshwater creatures and plants! Only thing to mention is labeling of fish on tanks is difficult to understand/read. The staff however is very quick to answer questions and direct you to what tank holds the animal you are looking for!

Experiencia fantástica: Upscale is awesome and the staff is amazing. Very helpful and patient, they are willing to answer questions and take the time to make sure you're making the right decision. They have a great selection of corals, fresh and salt water fish and all the supplies and food you would need. Every time I've gone in I've gotten the same experience and I will continue to make the trip from Statesville to visit this store.
Experiencia fantástica: Spoke with Matt and his team the other day and they were able to help me rehome my peacock and haps. Definitely will be a returning customer! Update: 3rd time I've returned and they constantly have different fish that wish I could bring home especially the uaru trio! I have 8 tanks now and wish I could grab more cichlids from them lol. Always great service dealing with Matt and exceptional talk with John today and purchasing geophagus. Even though an hour from me, I'll be a returning customer.
Experiencia negativa: Not sure what to think of this place. Got asked if I needed any help so much it became an annoyance to a degree. One employee walking around with no shoes on. Checkout was painfuly long. No plans to return in the future.
I’m sorry you feel this way. We train our employees to make sure everyone that comes in the store is greeted and to ask while in the store shopping if they need help. We will address the employee without the shoes. Also, we are in mid transition between switching to a different point of sale system and unfortunately this has delayed the checkout some until we all are comfortable with the new system.

I've been shopping with them for a few years now and they've consistently been some of the most knowledgeable and supportive experts I've talked to. Their selection is fantastic and there is always something new I've never seen before to imagine adding to my own collection. I highly recommend checking them out if you are shopping for a new addition to your salt or fresh water aquarium or need some caring human experts to help you figure out what is going on with your setup.

Experiencia fantástica: The staff is always friendly and EXTREMELY knowledgeable. They have a fantastic selection already and are still building up stock in their beautiful new store front. Prices on maintenence items like nets, fish food, tanks treatments, and more are reasonably priced. Live stock can be a bit pricey, but fish are well taken care of, healthy, and happy which I think makes it worth the money. They have a wide variety of fresh water plants and salt water corals including some pretty rare species of each type. The corals and plants are once again kept in exceptional condition and are worth the extra money in my opinion. This is a fantastic store that any fish/aquarium enthusiast should check out!
Experiencia fantástica: I love this place! I visit often during my lunch breaks since I WFH. It’s nice to see friendly familiar faces while taking some time to get out of the house! The new store is awesome, it’s like visiting an aquarium and fun to just walk around and see all the new stuff each week. I think the pup that is there is also starting to get to know me since she comes to say hi! I bought some dwarf corydoras today, and the employee that helped me was really great with answering my questions. Can’t wait to visit again!
Experiencia negativa: Great place to go they have a large variety of fish. but if you have one die and take in your tank water in separate from the fish. Their employee will tell you that you are lying that the water didn't come out of the same tank as the bag with a dead fish in it. I had explained that I had the fish in the bag for "about an hour" which means it could have been more or less than an hour I wasn't to sure at that point. The low review was for the disrespect and being called a liar by the employee. I am thankful that I was given the store credit. That's why I didn't leave a 1 Star review.
We tested your water the first time, you mentioned that the fish had been in the bag for less than and hour and the test came back with nitrates over 160ppm, ammonia over 2ppm and nitrites over 5ppm. Then you go back and get additional water to test but the second water test shows no ammonia, no nitrite and low nitrate. A dead fish in a bag will not create that high of nitrite and nitrate as shown in the initial water test. In addition with you being over the 24 hour window for saltwater guarantee and the bad water test we still gave you store credit. Not sure how you can be upset and still give a bad review.
Experiencia fantástica: Came to get an axolotl after cycling my tank through the necessary measures for weeks. Staff was straight forward and honest about a fungal infection some of their axolotls had fought through before selling me any, warning me it’s my own risk. I bought him anyway, and so far Pickles is doing great and is happy! I have gone to lots of different places and this one had the friendliest people I’ve run into on my axolotl journey which was a relief. They were NOT know it alls and gouging me with questions, and not flippant and totally ignoring my presence. I will be back in the future! Prices were reasonable too. There seems to be a no refund policy but there’s a “we will work with you” policy but that’s no issue it’s literally posted on signs throughout the building. They also were very knowledgeable and helped me with my questions.

Experiencia negativa: I purchased fish I had looked all over town for, two of them were kind of ill looking but since I was quarantining anyways I took a chance and purchased the remaining fish thinking I could help them. That is where I messed up. While everyone there was nice as we picked out our fish, there was a stark contrast in aid when needing to return the fish that died less than 20 hours after purchase. I understand every store has their own return policies but it seemed like a lot of hoops to jump through for $15 worth of fish and considering how far we live from this store. Between the roaches, dirty tanks, loads of dead fish inside the store and a return policy that was “on a sign” and not mentioned during purchase, I think I will just take it as a $15 lesson and share my experience so that you can make a more informed decision about purchasing from here.
We have a 72 hr policy on freshwater fish. This is posted on the wall walking into the fish room and also post right at the cash register. We did tell you to bring the fish and a separate sample of water for us to test. Normal procedure and once again posted in the store.
Experiencia fantástica: Very pleased with my visit and the African Cichlids that I bought here. I bought 6 fish total (peacocks and haps) and all were packaged great for my trip back to VA. All made the trip safely and immediately colored back up within an hour of being in my tank. 100% recommend! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I will return for more fish when the need arises. Pics are within 1 hour of the fish in my tank, after about a 4 hour drive.

Experiencia fantástica: Went there 4/8/23 and purchased a few fish and a sponge filter. Pleasant experience and staff was helpful but not too engaged to prevent us from looking at everything. We have never had an issue with fish from this place. Very nice selection of fresh and salt water.

Would give 5 stars but the guy who helped me was extremely rude and just kept telling me you can't buy these they can't go together and not even willing to listen to my questions. Even though I have multiple tanks. Will be putting in a formal complaint when I return.

Experiencia fantástica: Yesterday was my first time at upscale aquatics. I was blown away with this store. Not only by the number of tanks , but the quality of fish, plants and invertebrates. I was met by a very nice employee- he asked what he could help me with. No judgment about my tank size or the fact I had a simple goldfish. He showed me the freshwater clams and the best plants for my tank. I definitely will be a dedicated customer of this store. I live 45 miles away, but the drive is worth it to me. For the quality of their stock. I'm thankful I stopped.
Experiencia fantástica: I am a saltwater newbie, thank goodness the first place I visited was Upscale Aquatics. Randy and the whole shop staff have been wonderful in helping me start a beautiful tank. They are all very knowledgeable with any questions I have had, which has been many. They always have the most beautiful, healthy fish and a great selection of coral and aquarium needs. And if they don’t have something in stock, they will get it for you!

They give you all the info you might need !! & it's not just a job to sell the most like most places !! they care about everything down to their fish staying alive after leaving the store !!! Most won't care to keep people informed so if the fish die they can spend more money buying more nope not here !! The make sure you set the fish in our case seahorse up with a great life after leaving the store & if they feel like you won't or can't they will refuse the sale which made my experience great to know they care about their fishes not just selling !!

We bought an axoloti for my 9 year daughter and Randy went above and beyond to give details to my daughter and how she needed to take care of her new pet! Experiencia fantástica: Upscale + Randy = the best aquarium supply store in NC! We drive almost 2 hours to get our aquarium needs here. Randy is patient with new aquarium owners, he is great with kids every time I have been, he gives his personal cell and literally answers any questions at any time day or night!! I can’t say enough great things about Upscale and that is the absolute truth!
Experiencia negativa: Gosh you guys I had high hopes after looking at the reviews, but after spending the day in Charlotte and going to multiple stores (we live about 2 hours away) this store was by far the poorest quality in animal care. We saw at least 10 dead fish and so many under-enriched tanks (dirty, no plants, no gravel even). There were a handful of well maintained tanks, but those fish were very unresponsive. Incredibly sad. The staff were friendly, but I hope there is better training/energy directed towards taking care of the plants and animals in the future. I would not purchase anything here and bring it home to my tank.
Experiencia negativa: I would not go here at all. I brought some fish that died and gave my other fish Ich. Some of the fish that they have there are sick with Ich or other types of inflections. Plus the owner will argue with you and tell you that you are wrong when you know what you are doing. Plus when they test your water WATCH them do it because they will mess up your water test. The test tubes that they use are not cleaned at all and that will cause cross contamination with the test that will result in the test being wrong. Common sense to make sure that the test tubes are clean before you do a test.

Experiencia negativa: I would not buy fish from here. The reason being is that I had bought a fish from this store and it ended up dying two days later. I took it back along with the sample of my water. The test that they did at the store was incorrect. The test tube that they used were not washed out like they were supposed to be, which can cause the test to be inaccurate. The levels that was showing up on their test was high enough that all my fish in the tank would have died. The test I did at home the levels were normal and nothing was remotely close to what they had. Also the other fish got Ich from the other fish that we bought there. Since the water levels were completely normal than the fish did not have anything to be stressed about to cause Ich. When I addressed the issue to the taller older gentleman in the store he denied that the fish would have gave the other fish Ich and that the water test was right. Don't buy fish here! They always have a sick selection of fish that have Ich or other diseases.
Experiencia fantástica: Upscale is our go to store in the Charlotte area. They have the greatest selection of fish. All of their staff are super knowledgeable and more than willing to help with all your questions. This is great especially for beginners. They take the time to learn about your tank, where you are wanting to be with your tank, and make sure that your tank is ready for the fish you are buying. They truly care about their fish and make sure they are going to a good home.

The staff is so knowledgeable and helpful as well as willing to work to get what aquarium supplies you need in. Go seriously like now!! :)

Experiencia fantástica: I absolutely LOVE this place! They have a very large selection of fish both for saltwater and fresh water aquariums. They also have coral and a large amount of chemicals or additives to help if you have water parameter issues or your fish have an illness. We LOVE Randy!! He's very knowledgeable, kind, and patient. He doesn't seem to rush you and he treats you like family. He makes you want to go back! He helped my husband and I upgrade our 75 gallon saltwater tank to a 120 gallon tank. We purchased everything, the tank, stand, sump, rocks, sand etc all from Upscale with the help of Randy. The whole staff is amazing and helpful though. You have to visit this store! You'll be happy you did!!
Experiencia positiva: A hidden gem! Had no clue this place was here. Has a ton of variety of aquatic creatures. I bought a sponge air filter for my beta, the only thing I could coyote suggest is to clean some of the tanks but I will try to go here over petsmart to support a locally owned business. Everyone was super nice and it almost like visiting the aquarium for my pride one and myself. :)
