Fantastic experience: We’ve tried lots of different aquariums around the city and inner west but keep coming back to this place. They have a great range of fish and equipment and provide great advice. All fish we have bought have thrived. Easy parking out front on weekends when it’s a clearway.

Negative experience: They have nice variety of fish, though every time I get fish from there and introduce them to my tank, about a week later I get dead fish and high nitrite/nitrate levels, and they had said no refunds unless my whole tank dies. Probably not coming back, they have nice fish though

Fantastic experience: Beautifully managed aquarium with an incredible variety of fish. To add, these fish are all in gorgeous condition with decorated, stimulating tanks. Staff really knew what he was talking about and genuinely one of Sydney’s very best fish shops. All of the fish seemed happy and content. They even had an Arowana, which if you’re an enthusiast, is always an awe inspiring sight!

Fantastic experience: Looked around a couple of aquarium stores in the Inner West, one in particular was a bit questionable but I won't mention the name. The Newtown Aquarium store is so clean and aqua-creative and beautiful, I was so happy to have found it. The guys in there took so much time explaining stuff and talking me through the options of what I wanted. There was NO hard sell or upsell on anything. They were so polite and helpful, and I never felt they wanted to be do something else other than dealing with me as their customer. A breath of fresh air. I'll be back to make all my aquarium purchases there!!

Fantastic experience: Van helped me sat up a small planted tank for my kids… this sparked my old interest in the hobby and I now have a second tank. He is very generous with his time (when the shop isn’t packed) and has helped me with hardscaping plant selection and planting tips, fish selection, and water quality tests so I know when to add fish etc. The shop is always upgrading, especially the plant side. And I love the new aquaponic setup as you’re walking in. His fish selection is varied and reasonably priced. His staff are also knowledgeable and generous with their time. It’s always a fun place for me to spend a bit of time with my two small kids, and I’ll happily keep supporting Newtown aquarium in the future. Ben.

Fantastic experience: Been going to these guys for awhile since getting into the aquascape world. They are really friendly with heaps of good advice in their field. I recently made a call for a product to get it delivered into my workplace as I was working extra hours and would have to wait until the end of the week. Fantastic experience: Van has packed a lot of fish and variety of species in his shop. Fish were of excellent quality and some amazing display tanks as well to show his skill set. I have been looking for sterbai for weeks to add to my breeding group and I happily bought 6. Fish have settled in well and already schooling with my old group.

Fantastic experience: Recently purchased one of Vans beautifully aquascaped nano tanks for our betta and a few gorgeous Discus for the bigger tank. Great store to shop at, even greater people to deal with. Heaps of friendly and helpful advice from both Van and the crew.

Negative experience: I bought and spent a fair bit of money at this shop, bought 2 bettas and whole lot of little fish compatible to live with bettas although not all were compatible, after my last purchased I was told everything on the left side of the shop was compatible and bought 3 Tiger barbs which are actually semi aggressive fish, no good with bettas which were expensive bettas. They attacked everything in the tank and when returning to explain this they didn't want to take them back, so after 4 days I ended up flushing them down the toilet. Waste of money. This place needs to give better advice. Won't be back after this!

Fantastic experience: I am a hypervigilant fish keeper, always biting off more than i can chew with an ever growing amount of aquariums - which can mean I am a serial pest to the gents at this store - no matter my issue, they are there to help me. Newtown Aquarium also stock an extensive range of rare and unique imported Betta fish unlike anywhere else, and is open to requests! The healthiest and most exotic range of tropical fresh-water fish in Sydney, with the most beautifully aquascaped tanks in the country. If you need to satisfy your fish keeping addiction, or need the advice one of the country's best aquascaper's knowledge, look no further, whether it be a small nano-tank up to a custom build, Van and the team are your go to heroes. I seldomly go out of my way to make reviews, so I hope this helps any budding fish keeper addict out there.

Negative experience: Pathetic. Just spent $800 on an aquarium with other products and the owner ( Van) refused to discount on anything. While standing there his fellow worker took a percentage off from his customer who only bought a piece of driftwood. Never shop there again

Van and the team walked me through the process of setting up a brand new aquascape tank, answering all my questions and sharing their knowledge along the way. Fantastic experience: Van and the team at Newtown aquarium were extremely knowledgeable when we were looking to buy our first tank. They have a section of the store where you can set up your own Aquascape and play around with the different rocks and driftwood to make it exactly how you like it. Van is excellent at what he does, and was able to help me design a tank that included an underwater waterfall/sandfall! The shop also stocks an impressive array of fish as well as aquascaping items, equipment etc. They can also fill up CO2 tanks if you’re using it for plants. Definitely the place to go if you need some advice/looking to jump into aquascaping your tank as well.

Fantastic experience: If you are new to the hobby ( as I am ) or an experienced aquarists, you can’t go any further than Newtown Aquarium. Van and the team were very helpful with all their knowledge and expertise in helping me setup my first tank! Added to that the excellent Post-sales advice of how to run and maintain a healthy fish tank, you would be ill-advised not to stop in and say hello. Fantastic experience: These guys go above and beyond to make sure customers get what they need, not what they want. The guys helped me saved heaps and also gave good advice on do's and don'ts before starting on the aquarium hobby. On one occasion, having ordered some plants and live stock during covid, they took extra effort to make sure the items were delivered on the same day and all very well packaged too. Very sure they will go far in this industry. Need anything aquarium related? Newtown Aquarium is the place to go.

Everything I’ve learnt is wrong. Van and his store showed me miracles can and do happen, and they happen in Newtown. I’m different. Van’s different.

Negative experience: Not happy with the inquisition by the teenager who served my son and me. Firstly we were kept waiting at the door as the staff happily chatted oblivious that we were standing right in front of them. The manager finally pointed out to them we were there. When I explained I wanted to replace a goldfish that had passed he gave us the third degree of what we needed even though we were fully equipped and have had fish for years. If the sales guy wants to be a marine biologist maybe he should try the aquarium rather than upsell on products I do not need. We left the shop with no fish and my four year old terribly disappointed. We purchased our last fish and the tank setup here 3 years ago without any issues. I will not be returning thats for sure.

Positive experience: I like this store for the fact it is a small aquarium with a couple of staff that enjoy being there. Not a huge range of fish, but can every so often, have some fish there that others don't have. Prices are similar to others. Does have some nice aquatic plants near the front entrance. Never felt I am ever ignored, no hard sell. Nice place and atmosphere for such a small shop. Recommended.

Fantastic experience: What an awesome independent Aquarium store!!! The Staff at Newtown Aquarium are super knowledgeable and helpful, they go out of their way to help you be it instore on the phone or social media. Great selection of healthy fish and plants. Amazing display tanks one with a cool waterfall and full of shrimp another with a massive fern ecosystem filling up most of the tank full of a variety of colourful playful fish. A great store to hang out in with good vibes and nice helpful people. Will definitely be back when my tank is more established thanks to the staff at newtown aquarium.

Negative experience: Went in today(22.6.21) 1130am with money to burn after setting up and cycling my new aquascaped tank. Wanted some exotic fish and more plants. Walked into the store and was not acknowledged at all by the two staff in there. Looked at the tanks and plants for a good ten minutes. Staff walked past me like I was invisible a few times. No one else in the shop! Left in disgust at the arrogant lack of service. They lost a couple hundred bucks in sales and I will never go back. I assume the glowing reviews must come from friends or I was just plain unlucky on the day.

Fantastic experience: Such a lovely shop! Their fish are extremely happy and healthy and their setups are so sweet. Betta fish in massive tanks all to themselves and gorgeous aquascaping throughout all the tanks. Aquatic plants at great prices too! The owner was super knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to answer all my questions. Would highly recommend :)
