Family run Pet Shop in Pontfaen, Lliswerry, Newport. Our staff is well trained and has years of experience in the pet industry. We have our very own Parrot Behaviourist, Canine Nutritionist and Professional Dog Groomer.
We specialise in Parrot breeding and Hand-rearing and offer a wide range of cages, feed, toys and accessories.
In our aquatics section you'll find Tropical fish and Cold Water fish, aquariums, food, decor, treatments and accessories.
We also have treatments for ponds and more.
As well as offering dog grooming we also sell dog food, including Burns dog food, treats and Nobby leads, collars and harnesses.

Fantastic experience: Great shop and customer service. Had my dog Bear groomed here and he came out smelling and looking amazing, he was so excited and loved all the people in there. Negative experience: I should give 0 starts, but I needed to review this. This is the second time when I’ve been using this groomer. The cut was fine, but the lady was upset because I dared to let her know that last time she left too much hair on his head and looked as if he had a hat on. She told me she didn’t want to see my dog because I wanted to be groomed the way I wanted. Ridiculous attitude and very rudimentary behaviour from someone that wants to pose as ‘the greatest’ around. I will take this further as I find it discriminatory, this shouldn’t run a business. I’m sure the trade act & licensing will love my complaint. If I go and have a haircut, I ask the barber how I want to be cut, not how he wants to cut me. Ridiculous.

I want to expand a bit more on the discussion you had with the groomer earlier today. I want to start off by apologising for a long reply, we do not get many 1 star reviews so I want to make sure I cover all the grounds on our side. I am sorry that you are unhappy about this decision, but you have to understand that she has the freedom to decline work when she doesn't feel like the right person for the job. This one star review is not due to her being a bad groomer, but because you are angry at her. When she groomed the dog for the first time, she was told a set of instructions which she tried to follow as closely as possible. When she had done the job she thought it was good, but that feeling was quite the opposite after showing you the result.
Regarding the first appointment in which we gave your dog a “hat”, I want to expand this to clear out any confusion with you and any readers of this review. When you brought the dog in, you specifically said that you did not want a poodle cut. When she finished, you complained about the shape of the dog's head. We wanted to do a good job so we cut the dog how you wanted and you seemed to be happy with the end result. The end result was a poodle head, exactly what you told us that you did not want at the start. When a customer gives us requests, we expect them to have an idea of what they are wanting. When customers tell us what they want, and then complain when we fulfil their request, this costs us time & money. If you would have said that you did not want a poodle cut, but you want the head of a poodle, this would have been much clearer for us. In the review you stated “She told me she didn’t want to see my dog because I wanted to be groomed the way I wanted.”, this is not what she said. She said that she did not feel like the right person for your dog. The problem is she did exactly what you wanted, it was just not what you wanted.
English is not the groomer's first language but she tried to explain that she did not feel like she was the right person for you. She said that it would be best for you to find someone else for next time, is that considered rude to you? When you replied strikingly, “so you don't want to see me?”, she became anxious and lost for words. I think the “rudeness” you experienced was simply a reaction to her shock when you became angry at her. Again, we understand that you might be unhappy with our decision but how you worded this review afterwards shows that she made the right decision.
If we would have continued to groom the dog, then of course this 1 star review would not exist but she would feel anxious every time she has to groom your dog. The anxiety is due to her not knowing if the cut she is doing will be good enough for you, because you might request one thing and mean another. I am not quite sure how any of this is discriminatory?. If you do feel like we are doing something wrong, then definitely contact the trade act & licensing. Here is their contact number, 0808 2231133. We try our very best to provide a service to everyone, but we also have the power to advise people to go somewhere else. We are sorry that this decision has made you frustrated, but I am sure that there are other groomers which are better suited for you.

Fantastic experience: I took my mums dog here this morning for the first time, so was a little nervous, but there was no need. Louis went in happy as larry and was just as happy when I picked him up. The lady was lovely who groomed him and explained some things she did, for example removing a small stone from in between his toes, his cut was lovely and they also did his nails. Really pleased with this experience and he his booked in for his next groom x

Negative experience: I took my Poodle there on Friday I'll admit she was a bit knotty poodles get like that because of the curls, I had a call a little more than an hour to say she was ready which I thought was a bit soon for a poodle groom, every bit of her was shaved like a sheep nothing was left, didn't look like my dog,, she just shaved it all off can recommend if you just want a number one all over anything else find somewhere else,,,, gutted the dog is not happy either,,,, she just couldn't be bothered to take the time,,,, £35 for an hour 15 mins,,,,,, do the math pics before and after
I'm sorry you didn't like the service we offer. We told you right in the beginning that we would need to cut her very short as she was extremely matted. When you say she was a little bit knotty it is an understatement. Fortunately we did take some pictures as it's not often we get a dog in this kind of state. We also showed you the fur we cut off and yes, it was like doing a sheep. It came off as a whole matted fleece. You weren't able to see her paws for knots. Her ears were full of hair and dirt. The whole body was covered in knots and asking us to brush out those knots wouldn't be fair on the poor dog. You can just imagine the pain it would cause her. Our priority is the welfare of the animal. We know dog owners like to keep their dogs looking their best, but in this case it wasn't possible. As we told you, both when you brought the dog in as well as you picked it up, if you brush her daily, and not just the top of the fur it need to be done down to the skin, you will be able to keep the coat long and curly. I can't see it has nothing to do with our groomer the state your dog was in. Fortunately we are so lucky that more than 99% of our customers are devoted to their pets and take a good care of them. They are happy with the work our groomer does and the love she has for their pets. But unfortunately we do get the odd one that cares more about the look of their pets than the state they are in.
We have never before posted pictures of dog in our reviews. But when we are attacked like this, which can potentially damage our business, we need to defend ourselves. Although we know we did our very best for the dog.

Fantastic experience: I was anxious about getting my daughter the budgie she wanted for Christmas. The staff were very helpful on the phone and replying to my emails. They reserved a bird for me, but on the day they had others available and didn't insist I had the one I had reserved. The shop had all the food and accessories I needed plus a helpful leaflet on feeding our new feathered friend. There was free parking outside. I was very happy and my daughter was delighted, especially as the budgie happily sat on her finger on the same day we bought it!

Fantastic experience: Amazing local pet shop that breeds their own birds. Lots of cages and toys in stock at good prices. The owners are lovely and always able to help with whatever needed. Best pet shop in the area.

Fantastic experience: We got our hand reared 'pineapple' green cheeked conure from here. She's amazing, so tame and friendly, loves to cwtsh and play. 'Silly tame' is definitely true! Friendly, knowledgeable people, great selection of pet supplies and shop spotlessly clean. Fab!

Fantastic experience: Called in on Tuesday to get another budgie, because I had lost one and burtie was lonely what a great place,staff very polite and helpful, service was good and educational !! shop is well stocked and very good value for money, and a big variety of birds, some IV never seen before beautiful and it's got a dog Grooming room

Fantastic experience: Just picked up my Cockapoo from Doggy Groom. This was the first time I have taken her here. I can honestly say that this is the best cut she has ever had. A very professional and caring service. I Would recommend, and I will be returning too.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic and friendly little place with wide variety and great pricing! Got a little Syrian hamster and she's so friendly and cuddly from day one so definitely the result of proper care in the shop. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful too, cannot recommend enough!

Fantastic experience: Lovely staff. Did a great job of grooming our cocker. They did exactly what I asked for and were really helpful when helping me choose a new lead and harness for her. Will deffinatly be back!

Fantastic experience: Been on the shop couple of times. Agust is very helpful and gives you very honest advice you can get from a pet shop owner especially if you are a first time pet owner. He even allowed us to loan a bird for my son Alistair to have a good start while were waiting for the bird we like just to please him and not to feel disappointed. That’s what a business should be creating good relationship with your customers making extra effort to help you in anyway they can. Thank you Agust we really appreciate it!!!. Fantastic experience: Fabulous professional service, very nice and polite owners. I am always pleased the way my dogs fur is cut. They've recently expanded the shop, much more variety of pet foods and supplies on offer.
Negative experience: Brought my dog in to be bathed, clipped, ears and nails cleaned all for £35. Changed my mind about clipping but gave the go ahead for the rest. Picked him up he smelt of talcum powder no ears or nails cut and charged me £30. Very disappointed. Nice people though.
Fantastic experience: I love love love this shop the staff are friendly its always freshly swept and the animals are all very well cared for. The selection of products is fantastic and easy to find. I like to switch toys out for my birds and theres all ways a new toy to be found. The new bird room is great and the cages are clean and the birds singing away.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely fantastic pet shop / groomers. The owners clearly love all their birds . The cages were clean they had toys to stimulate them whilst waiting for their forever owners. The owners of this pet shop are friendly and share their knowledge with you.

Fantastic experience: Would highly reccomend doggy groom. Took my shih tzu here. Was well advised by thorunn of the cut that was needed. Was able to take him same day which was a bonus. Amazing job and service was just what we needed. He came home very relaxed and looking amazing. Thanks.
Fantastic experience: Our dog was always really scared of being groomed but they are so kind and patient that he now actually enjoys it! Doggy Groom is also really reasonably priced. Highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: Would give these lovely people 10 stars if it was possible. Brilliant experience for my bichon, Buddy. Wouldn’t take him anywhere else. He comes back so chilled and both Agust and Thorunn have such a lovely way with him. Also, always ready to give advice about any of your doggy questions. Nothing is too much trouble for them and so I would highly recommend these groomers to everyone who has their own fur babies.

Fantastic experience: Thorunn has such a wonderfully calming way with dogs and it amazes me to see how well they respond to her speaking Icelandic in soothing tones to my dogs. Both of my scruffbag terriers have been groomed by her and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as well as getting the chance to play with her dogs ;) Both dogs came home neat, tidy and smelling beautiful, as well as being calm, relaxed and happy. I will definitely be sticking with Doggy Groom in future :)
