🗣️ St Andrews Aquarium: Reviews
Fantastic experience: My son loved it, the penguin feeding time was fun and informative. Highly recommended
Thank you for the 5 stars! We hope to welcome you back again sometime
Positive experience: Great place to spend an hour or two with the kids.
Thank you!
Fantastic experience: It's very clean, informative and interactive, definitely worth the visit
Thank you so much for the 5 stars!
Fantastic experience: My 4 year old twins loved every area of the aquarium, looking for all the different types of fish and animals
We are so happy to hear you all enjoyed your visit with us! We look forward to welcoming you back again soon
Positive experience: Interesting and informative. Had a good hour in here, staff wre helpful, knowledgeable and cheerful
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a great review. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon
Fantastic experience: Having been to both aquariums in Scotland recently this one is far better
Thank you so much for the 5 stars!
Fantastic experience: Nice aquarium. Bigger than thought. Annimals easy to see. Beautiful!
Fantastic experience: Amazing animals! Meerkats were so cute and posed for the camera. Architecture and layout of each exhibit is so thoughtful
Fantastic experience: The only things happier to be here besides us were the animals. My favorite aquarium
Fantastic experience: A brilliant aquarium that's well worth the visit. They have a wide variety of things and a good little cafe. Its right next to a nice little beach. The only disappointing aspect was parking.... all of the disabled bays were taken up by cars not displaying badges .
Thank you so much for the 5 stars! Unfortunately as it is a public car park there isn't much we can do about those using the wrong bays. We hope it didn't cause too much of a bother and we hope to welcome you again soon
Fantastic experience: a great place with access to the beach nearby
Thank you so much for the 5 stars!
Fantastic experience: Brilliant place with lots to see. Great talks at feeding time for the sharks and meerkats!
Thanks Connor! Great pics. We look forward to welcoming you again sometime soon!
Positive experience: Don't come expecting either to be able to park easily or get something eat. There's no cafe and parking is a nightmare. The girl speaking to us during the penguin feeding spoke too fast to understand what's she was saying.
Thank you for your review Diane. During the holiday season St Andrews does receive a lot of visitors making the town busier than usual. There are many streets around us with free parking or a public car park just down the path from us where most of our visitors park without too much of an issue. We offer takeaway drinks, tea, coffee and snacks that can be enjoyed on the picnic benches outside. Alternatively there is 'Saints Sizzle' right next door which offers hamburgers and fries. They have plenty of tables inside and outside for dining.
I have passed on your comment in regard to being unable to hear and understand the penguin talk on the day you visited.
Negative experience: Poor quality for the price. We were extremely disappointed by the visit, especially since we visited the Macduff aquarium last year and it was superior to the St Andrews one. We felt ripped off and very unsatisfied with the visit. Would not recommend this for a good day out. Save your money!
Sorry to hear that you were left disappointed by your visit. You have not left any details into why exactly you felt this way and, as we are always looking at feedback from our visitors on how we can improve, it is a shame that we cannot address what the exact issues were you experienced. We are a small family business and are always conscious of our pricing - we remain one of the most affordable attractions in our field. We have over 120 different species for our visitors to learn about along with different talk and feeds on throughout the day to enjoy. We are sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit with us and we do hope you will give us another chance in the future.
Negative experience: Don't bother if a member of your family is a wheelchair user.
Hi Margaret. We do make it clear on our website that due to the location and age of our building we are unfortunately not fully accessible for wheelchair users. We are looking into options however it is proving to be very difficult. We do not charge for this reason and still welcome many visitors throughout the year who user wheelchairs as they can still get access into our gift shop and to see our tropical marines area, chameleon, axolotls, penguins etc which they enjoy
Negative experience: I'd rate 0 if I could, I drove 4 hours after looking at the reviews and them saying it was a good day out, I work in a well known fish shop and could of seen 80% of the animals at work which is the most annoying part, it then cost £32 for two adults to walk around a small room for half an hour my one year old got bored very quickly due to lack of interactive things to do, the place is also not wheel chair or pram accessible me and my partner had to carry the buggy up and down stairs which is disgraceful. The staff where very cold refused the girl at the front desk just handed us a map and said nothing else and when we went to leave we got my child a teddy and the same girl refused to acknowledge us at the till and continued to do other things and left us waiting for 10 minutes. The penguins looked very depressed as the enclosure they are in is way too small got 3 penguins and looked uncleaned.
We are very sorry to hear that you had a disappointing visit with us, we welcome all feedback good and back and are always looking for ways we can improve. In regard to wheelchair and prams it is true that there are stairs to navigate once inside the aquarium. Unfortunately for wheelchair users this means there is only access to one level. We do not charge wheelchair users for this reason and we still welcome many visitors in wheelchairs throughout the year. It is made clear on our website and we are continuing to look for options to be more accessible. Unfortunately due to our location and being a victorian-era building it is proving difficult. For pram users you are more than welcome to leave your prams in our reception area, otherwise you are looking at 1 small set of steps and 1 set of graduated steps to navigate. Again we accept that this is not ideal and are looking at options available to us. A visit with us is what you make it, our tickets are valid for the whole day allowing everyone the freedom to come and go as they please. We house over 120 different species of animals over 3 levels and an outdoor space, rather than 'a small room' as you have mentioned - with plenty of information to read and learn from. Our keeping team provide 5 talks and feeds throughout the day and are always on hand to help and answer any questions. Each talk lasts 15 minutes so I am guessing you didn't manage to see any of these if you were only in for 30 minutes. We don't offer maps at reception, as it is a loop of the building we don't have any maps available. There is also a lot to mention to each of our visitors in terms of where to find toilets, the talk times and explaining that the ticket is for the whole day so I am surprised if none of that was mentioned. As a member of BIAZA we are inspected regularly and need to comply with animal welfare protocols etc at all times. Our enclosure meets the size requirements and our 5 penguins are a very happy colony! In terms of your work place I can't comment as I don't know where it is you work, or what species you house there.
Positive experience: Lovely aquarium and enjoyed our visit but felt recent price increases were quite a lot compared to what was on offer. Will be back in the future when in the area.
Thank you for giving us 4 stars, we are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us overall. Our prices were increased by £1 in February this year in order to help us with the care for all our amazing animals. We are always conscious of our pricing and we remain one of the most affordable attractions in out field.
Positive experience: Short visit, not that much to see, but I'm sure the upkeep reflects the ticket price
Thank you for your review. We would have to disagree with there not being much to see as we house over 120 different species! It definitely depends on how much you want to take in and whether you stay for our talks and feeds that we have on throughout the day. We remain one of the more affordable attractions in our field and are always conscious of our pricing.
Negative experience: We visited as a family of 4 at the weekend and it was a major let down. Majorly over priced for what was on offer, the outdoor section was closed with no notice of that on arrival and waited 15mins for ray/shark feeding only to them not to be fed!! Unfortunately a poor experience with a young family.
Thank you for your review although we are sorry to hear you had a disappointing visit with us! The outdoor space was our seal pool until the end of 2023 when it was destroyed by storm Babet. The area is being worked on for it to eventually be an outdoor space where our visitors can access and enjoy. This work has been ongoing since 2023 and has been documented on the news, newspapers as well as on our website and socials as it was very devastating for us. Our sharks are target fed rather than a big feed at these talks. We take the lead from them and so perhaps on this occasion the keeping team felt it was in the sharks best interest for them not to receive a big feed. We do still do our talks though for whoever wants to learn more about these amazing animals but we apologise that you were left disappointed. We hope you will give us another chance once our new area is complete as we will have doubled in size!
Fantastic experience: Penguin Feeding Experience - after having to reschedule a few times then arriving on a day when the aquarium had a power cut, it was touch and go if the Experience was going to go ahead. One crying, sad son however the lovely staff came to the rescue and managed to allow it to go ahead. Two delighted children, getting to meet and feed the lovely penguins. Thank you for saving the day!
Hi Wendy! Thank you so much for being so great and understanding on the day, it was very stressful for everyone but I am so glad we were still able to get you guys in for a fun experience with our penguins! Fab photo!! We hope to see you all again sometime
Negative experience: I was a bit underwhelmed with the visit. For £30 (1 adult and 1 child), it seemed very steep for what was actually offered. We probably spent 45 minutes in total, and 15 minutes of that was the gift shop. I don't want to be super critical, but I was expecting to see more.
Sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your visit to our aquarium. We house over 120 different species with loads of information to take in however it depends on how much time you want to spend at each enclosure but there is definitely more than 45 minutes worth of things to enjoy. Our dedicated keeping team provide 5 talks and feeds throughout the day and your ticket allows you to come and go as much as you like to enjoy them.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place to visit, lots of sea creatures to see, also funny meerkats and penguins! Left better impression then I was expecting also beautiful area by the sea, where you have plenty of space for walks, restaurants and gift shop! Worth to visit!
We love your pictures! Glad you had such a fun visit with us
Fantastic experience: A beautiful place for the whole family
Fab photos! Glad you enjoyed your visit with us!
Fantastic experience: As an aquarium enthusiast living in Scotland, I had to visit st Andrews' one. It was fantastic, I really loved the vivariums and the meerkats as well. There's also real Scottish SHARKS, insane. The tanks are clean and the fish looks happy, which is all I care about. 7/5 would definitely go back again if only it was easy to go to st Andrews but somehow they decided they didn't want a train station
Great photos! We are happy to hear you had such an enjoyable visit with us. We look forward to seeing you again soon
Fantastic experience: I never would’ve thought there would be an aquarium right next to the golf course. What a cool spot.
Glad you enjoyed your visit with us! We hope to welcome you back again soon!
Positive experience: Visited on a Saturday afternoon in April. Wasn’t very busy. Nice place but only took us an hour to see it all.
Negative experience: As far as days out go on the value for money against other tourist attractions I thought this was pretty poor value for money. Not accessible for wheelchairs and buggies either. Pretty disappointed if I'm honest. Talks seemed informative but that was the only positive. Wouldn't recommend
Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review Stevie although we are of course disappointed that you did not enjoy yourself. We have over 120 different species here with plenty of information on them all so definitely lots to see and learn. The talks are on throughout the day and great to see. Each ticket is valid for the whole day allowing flexibility to come and go as you like to see them all and fit in lunch etc. We do have a few stairs throughout however most people with prams find it not too bad and there is a ramp allowing access into the aquarium so that they miss the majority of them. Prams can also be left in our reception area too. Due to the age and location of the building we are not fully accessible for wheelchairs however they can access one level and we allow free access for this reason. We do state this on our website so that everyone is aware before visiting us.
Fantastic experience: The aquarium was nice, there were many different species of any animal, fish mostly but turtles, frogs, spiders and meercats as well. The place aquarium stands on is perfect as well, it's just in the middle of a city and there is a beach and a golf pitch just beside it. There is a lot of information on the boards all over the aquarium that tells you everything you want to know about all sorts of animals. Sometimes you can see how sharks and stingrays are being fed, that looks amazing as well!
Thank you so much! Glad you had a great visit with us and took the time to take in all the information available!
Positive experience: A nice aquarium, but fairly small so you can see everything in a little over an hour without going fast. It felt quite pricy as a result but still enjoyed by all
Thank you Dougal for taking the time to leave us a review, we are glad you enjoyed your visit with us. Although we may seem small we do pack a lot in, with other 120 different species and lots of information to take in. We have many talk and feeding sessions on throughout the day and you can come and go as much as you like to see them all.
Fantastic experience: We had an impromptu visit, driven in by rain and wind. What a cool surprise! Very good aquarium with lots of great exhibits. The penguins were a lot of fun.
Thank you Nick. Glad you had a great spontaneous visit with us!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely brilliant day today Friday 11th April. Big shout out to Fin at the aquarium, very helpful, kind and knowledgeable he took his time to chat with us and explain all about the sharks, fish, skates, meercats penguins etc. Thanks Fin from the 5 women from Glasgow.
Thank you so much Liz! Our keeping team are always keen for questions from our visitors and happy to share their knowledge! We hope to see you all again sometime!
Fantastic experience: Lovely aquarium, and lovely gift shop.
Thank you so much!
Fantastic experience: The aquarium isn't really set up for taking prams but we were told to go around the exit first and then work our way back so the staff were very helpful and the aquarium overall was very clean, lots to see and well structured, would recommend over the others like them for sure.
Thank you so much for a great review! Happy to hear you enjoyed your visit with us!
Positive experience: A good, small aquarium with a number of varied aquatic species and land animals. With two kids under 10yo, an easy day trip from Edinburgh via train/bus/walk. We completed the circuit within an hour and the kids enjoyed the scavenger hunt and sweetie. Tickets easily purchased from the kind lady at the front desk. Although expensive in my opinion, I certainly understand the conservation efforts by the aquarium. I wish it was a bit nicer; quite a smell as you pass through the doors of separated exhibits, the floors appear to not have been swept in quite a while, and many exhibits had condensation on the viewing glass preventing clear view of the animal. After a toy from the gift shop, we left with smiles after a good visit overall.
Positive experience: Nice helpful staff but it's set over many different levels so plenty steps to deal with.. probably not great for wheelchair and buggy ect
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review! We are glad you enjoyed your visit with us. Unfortunately due to the buildings position and the age it is hard for us to be fully accessible however we do have ramp access available into the aquarium.
Fantastic experience: Had bought a family ticket voucher which was unfortunately out of date. Phoned ahead and was told the aquarium would still honour it which was great. Friendly staff upon entry and throughout. Exhibits are well maintained and animals look well cared for and happy. To note there are talks at certain times of the day for some exhibits. The sharks and rays tank was awesome, with some of the sharks and rays popping out of the water in places.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a great review! We hope to welcome you back again soon
Fantastic experience: A great afternoon out, a great selection of aquatics, loved the penguins and merecats.. Informative interesting talks.. Thankyou
Thank you Amanda. Glad you enjoyed your visit with us
Fantastic experience: Lovely aquarium with many sea creatures. There were a mix of indoor and outdoor enclosures for the animals to suit their needs, which seemed quite nice. The meerkat enclosure was really cool, and the staff were very friendly and answered any questions people had. The mammals inside were quite a surprise, and it is quite good for an aquarium of such a size.
Fantastic experience: Currently undergoing repairs and work outdoors, but the inside has a considerable range of aquaria. Also various lizards and insects are rounded off with an active Meerkat mob or two. Well worth a visit, we have picked up an annual membership, which is well worth considering if you think you will visit a few times!
Fantastic experience: Came here with the family and it was amazing lots to see and do and the little scratch cards for the kids is a great way to get them interested in reading about the creatures and fish on display, highly recommend
Thank you! Glad to hear you had a great visit with us. Your photos are amazing!
Fantastic experience: Great way to spend an hour, lots of cool animals and fish. There's a kids quiz to complete along the way. Weirdly there is no prize at the end. Suggestion to give the kids a keyring or a sweetie. It wouldn't cost much
Thank you for your 5 stars Pete. The quiz is just a bit of fun for on the way round and a fun way to learn. Every child gets a sticker for completing their quiz. If you come back at Easter or Halloween we usually do a fun activity for all the kids with prizes.
Fantastic experience: Great for kids, probably about an hours worth of entertainment. Your tickets are for all day so if you want to head out for lunch and come back it's very useful.
Thank you!
Fantastic experience: We visited with 5 adults, a 10yo, 5yo, 4yo, and 2yo. I felt the prices were good value. We had a voucher and I still thought the full price was good! The exhibits were nice and informative, with a fun quiz for the children. The kids enjoyed looking around and each found a special thing they kept going to. We watched the sharks and meerkats get fed and the talks were really interesting. We ate at the Saints Sizzler which was good value, serving burgers and fries (both meat and plant based). The staff were great and friendly and we enjoyed the food. Great day out!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great review, it means so much to us! We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.
Fantastic experience: My partner and I had the best day at St Andrews aquarium, it was lovely. When we got there, the lovely woman on the reception (I didn’t catch her name!) was very kind and personal, she let us know if we go to the meerkats first we will just make the feeding activity. Which was great, Fin then came out and gave a great talk for 15 minutes, making the session nice even disclosing the crickets which makes us all gitter. After that we decided to make the next 2, the monkey and the penguins. Penguins enclosure was brilliant, it was nice to see them so comfortable. You might go and think oh they’re cold! But if you wait for the talk Fin and Chris will tell you all about it and we got to see them in malting season. One of the penguins was swimming loads and giving himself belly scratches. We never usually stay for talks, but I highly recommend doing them on your trip as I seen a couple reviews saying there wasn’t enough to do. It is lovely and I think our best aquarium experience. For lunch, we went to the Saints Sizzle, wow! It was really reasonable, tasty and a decent portion. All staff were so friendly and again, must put a lot of effort into keeping enclosures clean! Thanks for a great day, and again to the woman on reception who was so helpful and welcoming during our trip
Wow! What a fab review you have given us, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. As a small family business reviews are really important to us. Sounds like you really got good use of your ticket and enjoyed the day with us. We hope to welcome you back again soon!
Positive experience: Booked the meerkat feeding experience for myself and a friend, we visited on a quiet Monday morning. The keeper was very knowledgable, we learned a lot about the 2 groups of meerkats and then had time to explore the aquarium afterwards. *The parking in front of the Aquariam at world of golf is free out of season (Sept-March) *
We are happy to hear you enjoyed your experience with us. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, they mean so much to us as a small family business. We hope to welcome you back again soon!
Fantastic experience: Good one for a short visit.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed your visit with us.
Fantastic experience: Small but enjoyable. Lots of different animals both from the land and aquatic.
Thank you Danielle :)
Fantastic experience: We enjoyed our experience and our baby loved it. Staff was friendly and the penguins were awesome! Very convenient to be able to come and go.
Thank you Nicolas. We are very happy to hear you enjoyed your time with us and that you made good use of your all day ticket.
Fantastic experience: A gem of an aquarium. Loads and loads to see and everything looked clean and well cared for. Brilliant for young kids or adults alike
We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your day with us. Thank you for your photos and five stars!
Fantastic experience: St Andrews Aquarium is a fantastic family-friendly experience! The diverse range of species, from playful seals to colorful fish, kept us entertained for hours. The exhibits were well-maintained and informative, and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We especially enjoyed the interactive touch pool and the penguin feeding session. It's a great way to learn about marine life and support conservation efforts. Highly recommend a visit!
Positive experience: Lovely aquarium with a selection of sea life and creatures. Saw quite a few range of fish that I had never seen before. Staff were also really friendly and welcoming. If you are in St Andrews or nearby or have other activities planned alongside Id recommend. We drove an hour - it was a nice day out with the beach next door but I think a one time visit. It’s quite small - doesn’t take too much time to get through. It’s not very accessible unfortunately there are steps throughout the place (unless I missed there being lifts somewhere - I apologise!) - luckily we had extra hands to help out with the little ones but imagine if you’re a single parent with multiples it would be a bit tricky. People did have their prams going through and up and down steps.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a great review, you pictures are fab too. You are right in that we are not very accessible, especially for wheelchair users however those with prams often find it not too bad and there is always someone on hand to help with the one small set of steps. We may be small but we definitely pack a lot in :) We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Hello, I came on vacation to visit the aquarium because I saw it on the map. I absolutely loved it, very relaxing to see the animals. I highly recommend going here when you visit St. Andrews, the location is by the beach, a couple restaurants nearby withing walking distance. One of the pictires I post shows the path to the aquarium and what it looks like coming from the bus station. Go straight down that path once you see it. Enjoy
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great review! Hope to see you again soon
Positive experience: Aquarium and animals are well cared for. Was well catered for children. It was good they had talks going on (however was going very fast). Well worth the ticket price
Thank you Mike! Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit with us
Fantastic experience: The experience was good, albeit rather expensive for my family buget. I cant quantify how much the overheads really cost here, so perhaps not a fair gripe. This would have knocked a star off had the lad manning the place not been so helpful, friendly and patient. Everyone loved the feeding times and the place was very, very clean. The place is run well and that is testament to all the hard working staff. The coffee was also fantastic!
Thank you so much David! We have a great team working with us, from front of house to our keeping team and our volunteers, we love what we do and are glad to hear you had a great experience with us. It is expensive to care for all our different animals and so our ticket prices do need to reflect this, however we are also passionate about education and the money we make also goes towards educating and inspiring the next generation
Fantastic experience: Excellent family day out. It's small but two visits with an all day pass kept everyone happy. I see a few people complaining about the meerkats, but they were the highlight for our 2 year old and there were an abundance of happy toddlers watching them, an excellent addition. From an adult perspective it was very interesting to see the local sea life which we never see from the surface.
Thank you so much Matt for taking the time to leave us a fab review, we are really happy to hear you enjoyed visiting us! We love our meerkats and are glad to be able to give them a happy home with us.
Fantastic experience: Great place to visit, very friendly staff, once you've paid you can come and go as you please.
Thank you so much! Great pictures too!
Fantastic experience: A lovely little aquarium by the sea, featuring some common and rare aquatic species in well maintained and presented tanks, as well as outside pools. Due to storm damage, the seals had been relocated when we visited - but from the work going on outside it was clear that they are working fast to get the seal enclosures fixed ASAP. There are also some non aquatic animals here - insects, meercats, and monkeys! My family was quite surprised by how large it is, as it looks small from the outside. Great way to spend the afternoon, and the staff here are friendly, professional, and full of knowledge.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great review, we really appreciate it. We certainly do have a lot here to be enjoyed despite looking smaller from the outside.
Fantastic experience: Lovely family run spot. The animals are easy to spot and look very well looked after. Super friendly staff, great well stocked gift shop and cafe. It’s an old building so there are steps but you can go round in reverse & use the outside ramp to get to the lower levels
Thank you Vikki for leaving us such great feedback. Reviews mean a lot to us as a small family business. We hope to welcome you back again sometime soon
Fantastic experience: Such a great day out at the St.Andrew’s aquarium with my partner a couple of weeks ago, located literally right off the famous beach and only a couple of mins walk from St. Andrew’s main town. In the aquarium there are lots of different species of animal, from the jungle , to Amazon rain forest and the deep blue sea. There is also a gift shop and a place to get a bite to eat. Well worth the money for a nice day out with a loved one or family. Would well recommend ⚓️
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great review. We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us and your photos and videos are great!
Positive experience: Good variety of aquatic species, nice staff. A bit pricey and cleanliness could be improved, there were a lot of cobwebs and spiders around the glass.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We apologise that the cleanliness wasn't up to scratch on the day you visited, it is something that is normally kept on top of, but we are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit with us otherwise.
Fantastic experience: What a great place! Spent couple hours here and worth every penny. Lots to see and a variety of animals etc. All the staff talks were very informative. Recommended!!
Negative experience: Tickets are such a rip-off, please don't waste your money here. They have advertised about having sharks, that's the reason we visited expecting to see a big shark tank but in reality they have really small shark species and not even enough numbers. The place is stinky because of meerkats kept indoors. Even penguin pond is stinky and gross to look at. Macduff aquarium is way better for the similar sized ones and a lot cheaper.
Positive experience: Great family experience for us. Lots of great exhibits. Wasn't too crowded, able to walk through without issue. Loved the meerkats which was unexpected at an aquarium but an added bonus. We did expect to see the sharks being fed at 12 but this didn't happen and reason explained by a staff member who then went on to give a really interesting talk about the different kinds of sharks in the tank. Nice wee girt shop too.
Thank you Pauline for taking the time to leave us a great review! As a small family business we really appreciate it. Glad you had such a great experience visiting us
Fantastic experience: Went with a 5 year old. He loved it and so did I. We were there for 4 hours ..including lunch at very good and reasonably priced burger place attached to the aquarium. Brilliant day out.
Thank you so much Pamela, what a fab review! We are glad to hear that you made the most of your all day ticket, and we hope to welcome you back soon!
Fantastic experience: Really good to see.perfect for kids and adults Love the meerkats.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review! We really appreciate it and are glad to hear you enjoyed your visit with us!
Fantastic experience: Amazing day out for all the family. Great family experience with it being a small family run business you appreciate the experience even more. From the dinosaur remains on the way down all the way through to the penguins. Enjoyed all of it.
Thank you so much for a great review. We do put a lot of hard work into everything we do here, so we are glad to hear you could appreciate it and enjoy your experience with us.
Positive experience: Really interesting, knowledgeable staff, variety of wildlife but more expensive than I would have anticipated. I get that looking after such a variety of animals well is costly, but expensive entry fees will discourage visitors. We spent an hour on the beach afterwards. It was free and the kids had loads of fun.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. As a small family business they mean a lot to us. We are conscious of our pricing and feel that it is fair, especially in comparison to other attractions in our industry. We house over 120 different species and provide the highest levels of care, so our pricing needs to reflect this too. We also welcome a lot of school trips throughout the year and are very passionate about education, so the money we make also helps to fund resources to teach the next generation. Our tickets are valid for the whole day allowing everyone to come and go as they please which is a great way to fit in all our feeding and talks along with lunch, or a beach walk so hopefully you took advantage of that too. We hope you will come and visit us again!
Negative experience: There are more land animals then there are aquatic creatures. Only 1 floor to tour. 5/5 for staff 5/5 for free tickets for disabled individuals and one caretaker I wasn't able to see everything in my wheelchair. Just corals, fish, and the monkey. I had to take a side entrance, which is extremely hard to move on if you are manual (luckily I'm electric).
Thank you Lauren for your review. I feel it is slightly harsh of just 1 star when you have rated other parts 5/5. Unfortunately we are not very accessible for those in wheelchairs, however this is always explained clearly on arrival and as you have said we do not charge for this reason. On the floor that is accessible we have many different species of fish including clown fish, blue tangs and lion fish plus many more. We also house our seahorses, axolotls, marmosets, geckos, chameleon and penguins on this level. So I would say there was still plenty to see. There is also access to our gift shop where we provide takeaway snacks and teas and coffees. Accessibility is something we have explored a lot however due to our location and age of the building it is not something we are able to adapt unfortunately.
Positive experience: Brilliant afternoon out, only issue we can see is disabled access ♿. A fair chunk of stairs. Other then that would recommend.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. Really good to hear you had a brilliant time with us! Yes, unfortunately due to our old building we are unable to adapt to be more accessible. There is access to a selection of our exhibits however, and entry is free for those in wheelchairs for this reason. We hope to welcome you again soon!
Positive experience: The aquarium is visibly dated and quite dirty in places, especially having a toddler present who can reach all the lower areas that are not kept clean. The dome that children (and adults) can put their head in was very dirty especially the floor, our toddler came out with dirty trousers after crawling in as did I. The animals and fish however are well presented and the rooms flow nicely by theme. The gift shop is, as expected, extortionate and unavoidable upon leaving. Overall quite poor worthy of 1 or 2 stars at best, would not visit again, but my little one enjoyed the animals hence 3 stars.
Fantastic experience: A wonderful diversion to our week, we had seen this aquarium being advertised and thought "why not". The Meerkat talk was informative and was a decent length to not make it boring. Its a shame the shark feeding had been cancelled but there was a good reason so am not too disappointed. It's the first live jelly fish I've seen so that was amazing!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great review! Your photos are amazing. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit and hope to welcome you back soon!
Positive experience: I didn't have time to stay and just stopped by the souvenir shop. staff was friendly
Thank you for popping by and for taking the time to leave us a review. Hopefully you can visit us again and experience all the aquarium has to offer.
Fantastic experience: Great first impression from a public aquarium that is so full of life and such character in the historical town of St. Andrews! It might be a little small compared to previous aquariums I have visited but there is plenty of informative signage at each animal display which can teach you a thing or two if you take your time to read and learn more about the wonderful animals that are kept here. I stuck around to hear the talks on some of the animals by members of the keeping team while the animals were being fed an assortment of foods. I was curious about the behaviours some of the animals around the aquarium were expressing during my visit. However, after speaking to the keepers after their talks and while they were carrying out duties around the aquarium I was reassured many of the behaviours are in fact completely natural but more importantly POSITIVE expressions and interactions with the public. Overall I had a grand old time at this establishment and would encourage anyone to go but also speak to the keepers if you see them at the talks or while they are around the aquarium. They are all so full of knowledge and work with the animals everyday so will have an answer to your questions.
Wow! Thank you so much for a fab review. As a small family business reviews mean so much to us. We are really happy to read that you have appreciated the time and effort our keeping team have put into each of our displays and enjoyed reading the information. Our team are amazing and very knowledgeable as you found out when speaking to them. They are always happy to answer any questions so I am glad you seized the opportunity to speak with them to learn more, and to put your mind at ease with any concerns you had. We hope to welcome you back again soon.
Positive experience: Enjoyed our visit with our granddaughter, but shame the seals aren't there anymore.
Thank you Susan for your review, glad to hear you enjoyed your visit with us. We miss our seals too, but they are happy, safe and being well cared elsewhere at the moment following the damage we experienced at the end of last year.
Negative experience: This was so depressing to go to. The aquatic part is cool but the other animals shouldn't be there. The snapping turtle tank looks way too small for how big the turtle is. The monkeys look depressed and scared. The meerkats were stressed out in their small enclosure. One of them was pacing back and forth, two of them were yelling for each other over the wood separation wall and another was trying to frantically dig under the separation wall the whole time. I would not recommend coming here. I would recommend there being a staff member that walks around since there were a bunch of kids screaming and banging on the glass at the animals too
Fantastic experience: Great place! We had a great time doing the meerkat feeding experience. Staff were absolutely great, we showed up and made our way around the aquarium a little too early but the staff managed to make the feeding time a little earlier. The feeding experience itself was great despite the meerkats diet being peas and live mealworms The keeper was super knowledgeable and friendly too. Overall great experience!! Only complaint would be the (lack of) parking. We went on a bank holiday weekend so maybe it was just the timing but we spent a fair amount of time trying to find a space. Not really the Aquariums fault but just a warning ⚠️
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a great review! We are so happy that you enjoyed the feeding experience with the meerkats and got the most out of your ticket! Your photos and videos are fab. We hope to welcome you again soon.
Negative experience: £15, for something that’s lasts 20 minutes. There were no staff on site to answer any questions or provide guidance. All the tanks and enclosures are tiny, the animals were clearly in distress. Meerkats were pacing back and forward rapidly. The penguins feathers were all plucked from the penguins ripping them out. The animals looked depressed and I left feeling very sad and disappointed that there was no was nobody available to potentially reassure me or inform me.
Hi Samantha, we are very disappointed by the comments in your review and would love to correct the information you have gained from the small amount of time you spent with us. We house over 120 different species, in tanks and enclosures which exceed the recommended size for each animal. 20 minutes with us would mean you spent less than 30 seconds at each of our 45 different displays which does not allow you to make correct assumptions on what you have seen during that small time frame. Each exhibit has its own information board which explains about each species in great detail, our team have spent a lot of time creating these so it is a shame that you did not bother to read them. Our meerkats do not pace as you have described. Depending on your visiting time they would have been scent marking or anticipating their next feed. There is a sign clearly displayed on the doors out to our penguins to explain why they are looking rather sorry for themselves at the moment. Every year they moult and their feathers fall out to make way for their new waterproof coat. This happens every year at this time. Yes this can be itchy for them where they need to use their beaks to scratch, however they are not 'ripping out' their feathers as you have described. Every day there are 6 talks and feeds which last 15 minutes each. Our amazing keeping team explain all about our animals in detail and they always welcome questions about any of our species. It is clear that you did not see any of these. There are always members of our team working within the aquarium, however speeding past every exhibit to be in and out in 20 minutes would most likely mean you did not catch any of them. There is also always a member of the team in our reception and gift shop, who are more than happy to answer any questions where they can, or alternatively to get a member of the keeping team to explain further. If you were feeling disappointed and sad we wish you would have raised your concerns at the time.
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend the family absolutely loved it. Was a really good experience and the staff are A1.. 100% worth the money as you can come in and out as many times true out the day. You see that feeding of the animals and the staff give you an insight about all the animals while they feed them.
What an amazing review thank you so much! Glad you got the most out of your ticket and got to come and go to see all our feedings and talks. Our keeping team spend a lot of time on these, so we are really happy you enjoyed them! Great pics too!
Fantastic experience: Had a great experience. Went over Easter holidays so a lot of kids, and very busy but it didn’t spoil our trip
Thank you so much for leaving us a review along with your great photos!
Positive experience: Great visit but could be more accessible even just clearer about easiest way in and out for those with mobility issues. So going in at the side there is a ramp for the gift shop and in there a way in to the aquarium there's about 8 steps down to the meerkats and rays and sharks there are some other stairs but going this way the 7 or 8 is the worst. So if you go in the main door to pay you can come back out turn left and there is a ramp down a level to the gift shop or a flight of stairs straight down too. I think for people with issues staff need to direct customers to use the ramp and enter at the gift shop to keep stairs to a minimum. The actual start is down multiple flights of stairs and as we didn't know about the access in the gift shop then it was a struggle. But it was a good visit a lot in there to see and staff talks and feeds are good. I would have given 5 stars but the access really needs highlighting I am sure it could be improved but well worth the visit.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are glad you enjoyed your experience overall, you photos are fab! Accessibility is an issue here unfortunately, with it being such an old building and the layout. We have looked into options in the past but disappointingly there isn't much we can do. Ramp access should be pointed out to everyone that requires some extra assistance so I apologise that is wasn't on this occasion. We hope to welcome you back again for another visit soon!
Positive experience: Made a length trip from Peterhead, Aberdeenshire to take my kids to St Andrews Aquarium. It was a good trip and we had fun. The prices were quite fair for what they offered. The animals were absolutely wonderful to see and were of great variety. There's a great selection of fish, sharks and lots of other things. They've got a beautiful gigantic spider, Axolotl were adorable. We couldn't tear ourselves away from the shark tank. The dancing rays and one particular shark who tried jump out the tank were a joy to watch. The venue is full of stairs, it's not really chair accessible. But this is well advertised if you pay attention. The areas are well lit. There's plenty of room. We didn't get over crowded at all. I think there could maybe be a few more seats dotted around the place and maybe have staff walking around to get parents to keep their kids in check. Screaming toddlers, kids with disgusting sticky hands, others trying to get into the Meerkats and others trying to touch the sharks popping up out of the water. As a parent who keeps their kids well behaved, it's extremely frustrating to be around. But not the venue's fault in the slightest. Just bad parenting. The only other negative is the awful parking situation. It took over half an hour to find a parking space locally, which is maybe the only real negative. Can be pretty bad for disabled people who would rather get achy enjoying the venue instead of walking to it.
Fantastic experience: A lovely little look at the world of the sea...and beyond
Thank you Laura! Your photos are great! We hope to welcome you again soon
Fantastic experience: We went on a Tuesday afternoon with our wee boy who is almost 2 years old and he loved it. It was nice and quiet and we went round it all in about 45 mins and for £12 per adult we thought it was worth it. There were plenty of fish for him to look at and plenty of things for his height so he could look straight into the tanks. Its small but definitely worth a visit for an wee hour
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a great review. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit. There are talks and feeds on throughout the day which are definitely worth a watch if you would like to visit us again!
Fantastic experience: We love this independent family run aquarium. We live overseas but have family in St Andrews. Whenever we come to visit them we also visit the Aquarium. As our kids get older they get more and more out of a visit and we love the talks and feeding experiences. We’ve also been lucky enough to witness the improvements and changes made over the last 8 years. This time round We were sad to see the damage the recent storms had caused meaning that the seals had been relocated. Hopefully that can all get repaired and we will see the seals back. We enjoyed seeing our other favorites the monkeys and meerkats. It is small but as the day pass allows you to come and go we also spent time down on the beach and came back to listen to some more talks in the afternoon. We are super happy to visit and support a local business.
Fantastic experience: It good family run place with diverse animals and a lot of engagement from staff. Very educational
Thank you so much Mark for leaving us a great 5 star review!
Fantastic experience: Good with kids. Friendly staff. I'd knock a star off for it being small but there's not that many touristy things to do in st andrews if you don't like golf. And they have penguins. We enjoyed it and managed to fill in a fun couple of hours there. They were very good with telling everyone the feeding schedules and you can leave and return on the same day once you've bought your ticket if you really want to get your moneys worth.
Positive experience: Went here with my wife and daughter (21 months old). My daughter loved it with a great variety of animals and fish (turtles, sharks, Lion fish, seahorses) the day pass was great too as it allowed us to leave for lunch in town and come back in the afternoon. There's a good gift store with a wide variety of toys and books and the staff were all super friendly and helpful
Thank you Simon for taking the time to leave us a review. Glad you took advantage of our all day ticket and enjoyed your visit!
Fantastic experience: The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The fish looks so cute and the tanks are really nice. So many other fun animals as well like meercats and penguins. Definitely going back.
Thank you so much for your great review and 5 stars!
Fantastic experience: Great for a day out with the kids! Staff were informative and attentive.
Thank you so much Kim for our 5 stars!
Fantastic experience: Nice little aquarium. Clean facilities, easy to see all the animals, well-written info panels by each tank. Regular animal talks on the seals, penguins, and meerkats. Took a little over an hour to get through including watching 2 talks.
Thank you Caleb for your great review and 5 stars!
Positive experience: Great place. Not very large, but with a wonderful collection of reptiles, sealife and meerkats (!) it's easy to spend hours here. There's also regular feed times and short information sessions.
Thank you!
Positive experience: Nice place. Excellent for children. Right toilets. The animal collection, not big but in perfect conditions. Gift shop prices are too high.
Fantastic experience: Nice small but clean and tidy aquarium with a good range of exotic sea life, as well as seals, Meerkats and Marmosets. Interesting talk at the seal feeding to learn about the 4 seals there and how they came up have them, and it was great to see the new family of Meerkats with their few week old babies.
Positive experience: Embrace the blue hues and quiet serenity of this lovely aquarium. While relatively small, it is quite dense and comprehensive in its portrayal of ocean life, from large numbers of turtles swimming playfully in a tank to an array of South American penguins cleaning themselves before leaving barking to the stormy gray waters. Because the passageways are relatively narrow, not a lot of people can move through the aquarium at one time, so try to arrive earlier in the day, before it becomes crowded. The price is £15, rather low for an aquarium but not insignificant, especially considering the small size of the aquarium. If you are living in St. Andrews, I highly recommend purchasing the yearly pass, which pays for itself within 3 visits. While not as iconic as the venerable golf courses or the towering stone cathedral ruins, is aquarium is a lovely place to calm if you need a quiet place to unwind from the chaos of life and marvel at the fluid movement of underwater animals.
Wow thank you so much Joshua for this great review! We are so glad to hear that you had an enjoyable and calming visit with us. We hope you took advantage of our annual pass too and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great little collection ranging from tiny eels to seals and many things in between. A nice little attraction in St. Andrews, especially for the young ones in the family.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a great review! They mean so much to us. Your photos are amazing too!
Positive experience: A bit over priced for such a small aquarium however overall it was a nice visit, Restaurant was closed so couldn't get a snack other than tea and coffee, Seals and penguins were best part of visit
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review Susan. Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit with us! We are a small family run business rather than part of a bigger chain and I'm sure you can imagine the costs involved in running a business like ours however we are conscious of our prices being affordable, and they remain one of the lowest in comparison to other attractions in our sector.
Fantastic experience: Had an excellent day out to St Andrews aquarium today would recommend a visit if your in St Andrews great for the kids staff are friendly and have excellent knowledge would definitely go back
Thank you for leaving us a great review and 5 stars! As a small family business reviews mean a lot to us. Look forward to seeing you again soon!
Positive experience: Our little girl loves it here but I feel £42 for a family of 3 is a little overpriced especially in current climate. Staff helpful and interesting talks scattered throughout the day. It's good that you can come and go throughout the day. We've visited numerous times over the years not sure if we will return next yr.
Thank you Darren for awarding us 4 stars and taking the time to leave us a review. Glad to hear you got the use of your all-day ticket and enjoyed our talks and feeds. We are a small family run business rather than part of a bigger chain and I'm sure you can imagine the costs involved in running a business like ours especially in the current climate. We are conscious of our prices being affordable, and they remain one of the lowest in comparison to other attractions in our sector.
Positive experience: Fabulous place to visit, although because of the location and age of the building there are lots of stairs to negotiate. Thankfully that wasn't a problem for us and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit again. Animals all very healthy and clearly well cared- for by friendly and knowledge staff who are always happy to answer any questions. There are also lots of very informative display boards about the animals which help to raise awareness in particular about ocean plastics pollution. This is a great place to bring kids, but please don't complain about the ticket prices - it's an independent family business, not part of a chain, and your ticket is a day pass, so you can come and go as you please all day. Money well spent, in our book!
Thank you Esther for a great review and amazing pics! We are glad you enjoyed your visit with us and seems like you definitely made good use of your all-day ticket! We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Lovely day out. It's well worth a visit. Lots animals and aquatics to see with knowledgeable, friendly staff
Thank you Suzanne! You photos are great, you've captured our animals so well! We hope to welcome you back again soon
