Fantastic experience: Had an awesome day here. So much to see and do. The turtle hospital was truly amazing and sad at how some of these beautiful creatures can be hurt so easily. The staff was very knowledgeable and passionate about their work. We had a great day.
Fantastic experience: Went ages ago but was excellent, government should fully fund upgrading this aquarium
Negative experience: Very disappointing! It has been closed for almost two years now, and there is not a single mentioning of this online or on street sighs. The site looks completely abandoned (we were there in the middle of the week and saw not a single person on site). It seems it will never open. Even locals don't know what's happening there and why it is closed. The official web-site says it is "transforming" which is a direct disinformation; the aquarium just does not exist anymore.

We provided an update to the community in November (via media and social media channels), which highlighted that the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is moving forward with planning a brand-new aquarium. A new purpose-built building will deliver better long-term value, however, as we progress to the detailed design stage with our principal contractor it is expected that the new aquarium will be open in 2026. Positive experience: Always go here every few years. Nice to see they keep updating fixtures and exhibits. I can see potential for a more interactive Cafe. Would like to see more on coral bleaching as an interactive demo.

Fantastic experience: Booking was full but after calling on the telephone, staff were nice enough to put us on a waiting list in case attendees left prematurely. We received a call and moseyed on down. A great experience in the heart of Townsville. Friendly and knowledgeable people and fish/molluscs/reptiles etc. very welcoming. One reviewer said (and I am paraphrasing here): “greatest way to see the barrier reef without getting wet” This is extremely accurate. Five stars.

Negative experience: At the presebt time it appears rundown. However, there were signs suggesting a refebishmemt is scheduled for 2012. Covid has resulted in the educational program being suspended.

Positive experience: Absolutely loved our 2-hour visit today. Having previously snorkelled on the Barrier Reef many times, it was great to see so many familiar creatures up close and without getting wet. Some of the creatures were new to us too which added to our interest. Due to COVID restrictions, guided tours are not being run at present but there were very helpful and knowledgeable staff available to answer any questions we had. Highly recommend a visit here.

Negative experience: Sign as you went to walk in said that we would have to go online to buy tickets to book a time, no reception open. The sign also stated that some of the attractions were closed due to renovations
Hi Kerry, We're sorry you were unable to visit. To operate under our Industry Approved COVID Safe plan we have had to implement new measures, which includes an online booking system. This enables us to manage how many people are in the facility at any one time, which we have had to limit to comply with social distancing requirements. It also provides us with customer details for contact tracing purposes. Sadly, we have had to temporarily suspend our talks and tours program, to comply with our COVID Safe Plan, as well. Due to these changes, we currently have 25% off our general admission tickets. We do have a Reef Education Specialist on the floor who can answer questions about the Great Barrier Reef. We have implemented QR codes, which link to educational videos so that guests can learn more about the Great Barrier Reef and the animals that call it home.
Positive experience: A great place for families to see tropical fish without getting wet. Our 3 year old spent an hour looking at the fish. There are bits the kids climb into and look closer at the fish - ours really enjoyed this. The touching area was closed due to COVID.

Fantastic experience: Don't let the outdated entrance turn you away. Inside is amazing. Unfortunately some things are closed off due to Covid but still amazing If you have a baby. A baby carrier allows better viewing of the tanks over a pram. Good accessibility for prams though

Positive experience: Pretty exxy and fairly tired looking overall. Some of the exhibits were empty also. Not quite up to the same standard as the Cairns Aquarium
Hi Dave, thank you for your 3-star review and feedback. Our aquarium is designed to showcase the Great Barrier Reef and so our marine animals behave as they would out in the reef. As the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium, our fishy friends are often busy exploring and interacting with the corals in our exhibits. Our marine life is best seen at 2:30pm for our Animal Feeding Tour where our fishy friends make their way to the tunnel for their daily feed.
Fantastic experience: Had a fantastic time. I do miss petting the sea critters like we use to be able to but understand it's for the animals health. Eat before you go. Food prices outrageous. They do have cardboard water containers though which is a bonus and a water refill station which is also pretty awesome

When your out of town guests visit, do they participate in our talks and tours? These are included in the ticket and are a great way for everyone to learn more about the Great Barrier Reef. Negative experience: I sadly had to give this place a one star, the place itself is lovely and beautiful so is most the staff, as long as you keep away from the so called water view cafe, one of the ladies is very rude she’s the only one that goes behind counter but she is also cooks, this whole cafe is a mess, please do your self a big favour and stir away from the cafe maccers not far anyway.

Negative experience: Honestly it's a really small place. Workers are great but there just isn't really alot in terms of attractions to go through. Can probably do the whole place in 15 min

The premier talks and tours include; our dive show, where you can chat with diver who is in our predator tank; the discovery lagoon which is a supervised interactive hands on experience; the turtle hospital talk where you meet some of the patients we are currently treating and our feeding show. Negative experience: This is over priced. The reef aquarium is impressive. Everything else feels old, the other aquariums are minuscule. A lot more for kids than adults.

Fantastic experience: I can't fault this place. Absolutely fantastic. Gift shop that is not over priced. Loads of parking, value for money admission, an amazing variety of fish to wonder at, very knowledgeable staff, touch tank. Disability access everywhere, cafe and family friendly. It has it all as well as being so close to the strand.

Fantastic experience: Really great place to visit. If you have smaller kids a family pass makes sense. You can go numerous times a year the kids never get bored. You can also do behind the scenes tours.

Positive experience: Unimpressed, definitely not worth the money. Paid for a family ticket, given no information, the guy at reception just told me to tap my card then handed me the receipt. It's old, run down and dull. The upstairs is incredibly hot and stinks of urine. The cafe was closed by 14:30. The staff doing the information talks were unprofessional and boring, resulting in people leaving and kid's whinging. Will not return. Cairns is 100x better.

Fantastic experience: We had an amazing time at Reef HQ. The service was excellent and the volunteers are so knowledgeable! We learnt so much about the reef and it's amazing ecosystem. It's well worth a look if you are in the area, allow minimum 2 hours.

Fantastic experience: Now this is a 1/2 a DAY activity for the whole FAMILY. From fish to sharks, turtles and crocodiles, coral tanks and a number of tours and talks throughout the day. Visit the turtle hospital as well as an extensive gift shop and a Cafe for a Coffee or a bite to eat. One of Townsville's best attractions!

Fantastic experience: Loved it! Lots to see. Could spend all day here. Glad we got the family pass for reef hq and the museum. Excellent value. Awesome talks and presentations. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. We love visiting here. Highly recommend if you are visiting townsville. Just make sure you find out when the talks and touch pool is on so you don't miss out or have to wait to long if you have kids.

Positive experience: Lovely, well-kept aquarium with plenty of information about the Great Barrier Reef. It's on the small side but admission costs are reasonable, especially if you live close by and can take advantage of the annual membership.

Positive experience: It was really cool Especially looking down into ther pool you realize how the fish etc are all there but they are hard to see , goes to show if your out on a boat you'll probably be missing 70%of what's really swimming by. It was a lovely day

Fantastic experience: We are locals to Townsville and have a family pass so we visit quite regularly and there is always something new on display. The kids have so much fun they don't even realise they are learning so much about the Great Barrier Reef and how to take care of it for future generations. There are extra activities during school holidays and there is a great play area upstairs for the kids to burn a bit of energy. The cafe has nice food and good coffee at reasonable prices for a bit of a pick-me-up half way through the day, as you will need a whole day if you want to get a good look at everything. There is also an awesome gift shop with everything from toys to windchimes to clothing which would all make great souvenirs to take home or as fantastic gifts for friends and family.

Negative experience: The turtle tour and information about the turtukes were good and learned alot. Apart from that it was ok, Killed an hour on a cloudy day.

Positive experience: As far as aquariums go, this one feels a bit small but Townsville is a smaller city so it is understandable. The bigger aquarium with a glass tunnel you walk through was the highlight for us. It's a fun place to bring kids.

Fantastic experience: This aquarium is much smaller than the Mi terry Bay Aquarium in California. However, it was an enjoyable place to visit, and our grandson LOVES going there!!!

Positive experience: First of all: Great place to visit (would have been 5 stars) BUT beware of where you park. There are small signs to "rear in" right in front of the Reef HQ. A lot of people receive tickets every day and the employees know about it but do not tell anyone or deem necessary to put up signs inside. Please change that.

Fantastic experience: Got to know a lot of stuff. One of the first places I visited in Australia and would recommend it to everyone. Definitely check out the coral sections because they are the most detailed I have seen outside of a journal.

Fantastic experience: Great aquarium with the long glass tunel where there is many sort of sharks and fishes that change colors, etc. The visit of the turtle's hospital was great too and it is worth to follow the guide tours. The feeding and dangerous animals were my favorites. Ps: seek for discounts online and avoid paying the full price.
Negative experience: Very underwhelming aquarium. Small, some empty displays and some truly strange volunteering staff. I've been to almost every aquarium in Australia and I have to say the Canberrean aquarium attached to the zoo is on par (not a compliment).
Hi Paul, Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit to Reef HQ Aquarium. While some of the exhibits are small they hold super interesting marine life that call the Great Barrier Reef. I hope you did manage to take some of the talks and tours as this is what really sets ReefHQ apart from commercial aquariums. We hope you will be our guest again some day soon and experience everything ReefHQ has to offer.
