š£ļø AQWA The Aquarium Of Western Australia: Reviews
Negative experience: Extremely disappointed with kids grilled fish and chips at the cafe. You could practically see through the fish. Waste of money!!!
Fantastic experience: Hadn't been in years and it was so cool to explore it with a teenager and not toddler, as in you get to see it in a whole new perspective because I didn't have to keep my eyes on a little kid hehe. Lovely, friendly staff and amazing aquariums. Loved it
Fantastic experience: Amazing, friendly, and passionate staff who genuinely seem to care about everything they're doing and care about Australian wildlife. The food on top of that was phenomenal, one of the best burger and chips I've had in a long LONG time
Negative experience: Very short adventure. We walked around the whole park in 10 mins and cost us $70 for 2 adults ($35ea). I thought it would go for longer. Also the food was pretty bad and I remember it being bad last time I came a few years ago
Fantastic experience: Was amazing would recommend 100%, really good experience especially to see the sharks!!!
Positive experience: Lucky we recieved Free tickets because I really dont think we go as a family because its very expensive . $9 for a bowl of chips and $21 for a burger is more exepensive than Macdonalds. $70 for 2 adults if far beyond reach of most families. Oh, both my daughter and I also noticed the taller young lady at the front counter pulled a face at me which I found Very Bloody Rude. She lacks no customer skills or people skills.
Fantastic experience: A fantastic experience! Beautiful live displays of a great variety of creatures The "shark" tunnel was mesmerising as all types of creatures swam above and about you.
Positive experience: Really good experience as we returned for a visit with two very enthuastic children who loved their visit to AQWA.
Negative experience: For a state or highest level aquarium in Perth, I must say it was ok but it should be way higher standard, accessibility and lighting for seniors, mums and families with prams and others with mobility issues. The exhibits were like prisoners doing time, bored, sedated and very unhappy. I don't know why the WA State Government doesn't drop 100million into it and put it on par with Eastern States like Sydney's Darling Harbour , very disappointing and embarrassing for WA.
Fantastic experience: Taking my friend in a wheelchair. I was nervous of taking her in the tunnel.Maggie and Niel AQWA staff members stop the escalator. We were able to slowly move through the tunnel. I wish you could see the smile on my friend face. You guys rock . Beautiful staff
Positive experience: A lovely place to go and look at a range of sealife. Great to have gone with a friend who loves the Perth and WA Sealife.
Fantastic experience: It is great with lots of cool animals.
Positive experience: Great place.. just wish it was bigger and more to see..
Fantastic experience: Went to the special underwater experience dinner. Was an incredible experience I won't forget. Would recommend
Fantastic experience: We visited AQWA (Aquarium of Western Australia) on a weekday and were surprised by how large it was! While itās not the cheapest activity, it offers a great experience for children. Although I've been to a few aquariums, the standout feature here is the moving conveyor belt in the main tunnel. It was brilliant for making the kids slow down and truly enjoy the incredible view of the sharks and fish swimming above us. Highly recommended for a unique viewing experience!
Fantastic experience: Discover the wonders of the underwater world at the Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) in Perth! Located in Hillarys Boat Harbour, AQWA showcases the incredible marine life found along Western Australiaās 12,000 km coastline ā from tropical coral reefs to the icy southern waters. Visitors can walk through Australiaās largest underwater tunnel, come face-to-face with sharks and rays, and even touch starfish in the interactive discovery pool. A perfect family destination to explore, learn, and be amazed by the beauty of our oceans.
Fantastic experience: I love everything about this place, as does my daughter ā„ļø their are so many different species of sea life it is truly astounding. The gift shop might be a bit of a leap when it comes to it's prices but the cafe is worth every bite of its food. There are plenty of photo opportunities for the kids and family. The touch pool is a different experience entirely, teaching both kids and adults hands on about our astonishing sea life and it's ecosystems. You can also book to dine under the sea, a dream-like experience with top tier five star ā dishes. The aquarium itself was built so beautifully and sophisticatedly, their are different sections for different types of sea life. My personal favourite is the massive viewing window downstairs outside, You can sit in the seats provided and watch hundreds of different fish and coral life living in one massive tank, co-existing and living peacefully. The room is so peaceful and dimely lit it's almost possible to fall asleep. Another "must-see" exhibit is "The mantis shrimp" these amazing creatures have the biggest blows of the ocean small but mighty and Beautiful in color (rainbow). The service at aqua is amazing with no waits or lines usually, unless you're in the gift shop or cafe. Most of the exhibits are educational aswell so you learn as you explore. They have it all here, it's definitely a must see destination.
Positive experience: Loved the place but the kids screaming and running around was a nightmare ..wish they had a kids free day so us older people could relax and enjoy . Came from sa and loved it otherwise
Fantastic experience: Visited in 1991 enjoyed it then. Have visited others around the country but came back to the best
Positive experience: Was really excited to go back and pet the cuttlefish in the touch pool but it seems there isn't any cuttlefish in the touch pond any more and the octopus wasn't available this visit either which was a little disappointing hopefully they come back soon, Everything else was great, kids had a wonderful time, and we had lunch at the cafe . Fish and chips and salt and pepper calamari, both were pretty good .
Positive experience: Had a great day hear with the kids bit off putting that the canteen sells fish and chips for lunch, but good day still. Fish look happy. Kids enjoyed.
Fantastic experience: Lovely experience, the tunnel was great, to catch a shark just few cm away!
Positive experience: Great place to take your children to learn about all the marine life in the ocean.
Fantastic experience: Snorkelling experience was awsome..kate our guide was great..the gear provided was perfect..absolutely worth it
Fantastic experience: Amazing experience with kids. Good one day activity in Perth. 5 star to the guides and staff.
Negative experience: Underwhelming is an understatement for the price you're paying, however it is good enough to entertain young children. What puts me off the most is the staff in the ticketing office, the older lady was quite rude. Honesty it just ruins the mood, better to find elsewhere to entertain the children.
Negative experience: Pretty disappointing to see that ai has been brought here considering we are all aware of the devastating impact it has on the environment
Fantastic experience: We went for Fathers day this year in 2025 and was worth it! Excellent place to visit! Thank you.
Positive experience: The fish and chips looked great generous and fresh. The wedges I would not recommend. Strange cross between twisted potato and curly fries very greasy and nothing like a wedge.
Fantastic experience: Awesome place for the kids
Fantastic experience: Awesome experience, loved the tunnel!
Negative experience: saw quite a unique fish the other day. His name was brandon. Say hi brandon!
Fantastic experience: Great outing for the kids.
Fantastic experience: Great aquarium. Lots of different fish. The moving walkway with all the sharks, rays and other fish is fabulous. I actually think this one is better than Melbourne's! I've been twice now.
Negative experience: Over priced and not worth it all if youāre an adult. Went 8 ish years ago and still hasnāt changed one bit. I bought 2 adult tickets for $75 and got through the whole aquarium in under 20 minutes
Fantastic experience: Perfect āunderwater world experienceā at hilarys. Must check out if your within the area!
Positive experience: I slept overnight here It was pretty cool
Negative experience: The old woman at the touch pool Needs some manners she ruined the whole experience everything we did was a problem. Our lanyards were a problem my daughter taking her time was a problem. Me touching a shark was a problem ( I wasnāt lifting the shark its turned around and my hand was under it ) seriously you need to do better. The young girl on the front counter looked unimpressed to be there. The customer service in this place was deplorable. I would like to say that the wonderful lady that took us around the vip Experience was amazing.
Fantastic experience: Great tour, absolutely Brilliant open water aquarium with both snorkeling and glass bottom boat tours , well done to the very informative staff that are involved in the day to day running A++
Fantastic experience: Great Aquatrium, really worthwhile to visit.
Fantastic experience: AQWA is a wonderful experience! The underwater tunnel is truly breathtaking, and the exhibits showcase Western Australiaās marine life beautifully. My daughter especially enjoyed the touch pools, and the whole place was clean, well-organized, and engaging. Itās not the largest aquarium Iāve visited, but itās definitely a must-see in Perth.
Fantastic experience: We visited AQWA for the first time last weekend and bought tickets to the behind the scenes tour, and it was excellent! Our tour guide Emily was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly, and it was so very cool to see how they rehabilitate coral and take a peek into their coral library. We also got to feed some crayfish and really enjoyed going on the glass bottom boat. There ended up being only 4 people in our tour group, so we got to ask a ton of questions. Bravo to Emily and AQWA for all the good work they do for Western Australian marine life!
Positive experience: Lovely day with my kids at the Aquarium until the end. My daughter fell over and hit her head luckily no stitches. Staff were attentive and and helpful. The pump station near the touch pool outside firstly needs a cation step sign ( no display) and secondly any child could trip over and miss the steps. Also not sure why itās there and should be fixed. This is a safety hazard matter and hope it will be fixed to prevent any more accidents.
Negative experience: I went there recently... what happened to the icecream stall, man the guy who worked there served me with the biggest smile on his face. the past few times i have gone he wasnt there, let alone the ice cream stall, i have started going weekly looking for the young devilish man named nathan
Fantastic experience: Lovely aquarium. We really enjoyed our day. The touch pool was really cool. Nice cafe and plenty of options in the souvenir shop.
Positive experience: First time going. Parking was pretty busy which was suprising due to the rain. The shark tunnel is great. I think more suitable for younger children than older. Not alot to see but will be returning to do the swim with sharks.
Fantastic experience: Wow nice this place
Positive experience: Was very packed, small and sweet aquarium. Could explore the whole place in an hour. Cool fishes!
Fantastic experience: Loved the aquarium, well laid out, nice tanks, some very vibrant colours and lighting, particularly for the corals, and a lovely vibe about the place. Some amazing creatures on display and plenty of information for each one. My son did the scuba with sharks experience and it was great, well organised and he loved it. Special shout out to Debbie in reception. She is so lovely, an amazing professional and friendly person, and perfect first contact when you enter. We will be back when next in Perth.
Fantastic experience: There may be a lot of people visiting on weekends, so it is recommended to buy tickets in advance.
Fantastic experience: The aquarium was so cool! It had a glow in the dark feel to it. My friend and I really enjoyed it, as we saw many different sea creatures such as clown fish, sea dragon, stingray and shark. It was nice to see all the kids with their parents enjoy it so much too, as it adds to the positive vibe. Also a very close walk from the Hillarys Boat Harbour too~
Fantastic experience: We had a wonderful evening at the dine beneath the sea experience at AQWA celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary. From beginning to end all staff were extremely friendly, attentive and professional. The food was delicious, and there was a variety of drinks available, with staff frequently topping up your glass. The tables are pre-allocated (and are stationary throughout the night) making the transition from upstairs to downstairs very smooth. Overall we had a lovely experience and would recommend to others looking for a dining experience in a unique location.
Fantastic experience: A great place to visit, especially if you have young kids. It's perfect for a weekend trip during the summer. They have their own cafƩ, but if you'd like more options, you can walk to Breakwater, which is within walking distance. There are plenty of interactive and educational tools for children to learn about marine life. Definitely a good destination for families with young kids.
Positive experience: My family and I went to AQWA for a family outing. The area is clean and neat, my son enjoyed himself most on the conveyor belt and watching the fish moving about. As my kid is small, he does not get to enjoy much of the interactive pool. The space is small but have potential for more interactives/shows for the children, such as a cinematic video on recycling or about fish in the sea, etc.
Fantastic experience: 2 adults. We're their for several hours & absolutely loved it. Could have stayed longer. Great displays, with a good write up about each one. The tunnel would have been one of the best things. Conveyor belt takes you along. Great idea. Lots of different species of fish & coral, all presented well. Well worth the money. Good Cafe with lots of tables & chairs. Free parking a bonus. Highly recommend
Fantastic experience: It's a wonderful experience for the young and old. Plenty to see and do - touch pool, arts room, circular travelator, etc. Great cafe inside AQWA with reasonable pricing and 10% off with annual membership.
Negative experience: I first visited AQWA about 10 years ago and felt underwhelmed then ā unfortunately, nothing has changed. If anything, it feels more tired now. The exhibits are limited, and we were through the entire aquarium in under 30 minutes. It might hold some excitement for very young children, but thereās little to engage older kids or adults. For the price, the experience just doesnāt offer good value. If youāve never been to another aquarium elsewhere in the world, you might find it okay ā but for most people, itās a letdown. A real shame, as location has so much potential!!!
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed our time there and would happily go back again. Good selection of marine life to view. The stingrays are huge.
Fantastic experience: Itās a nice place for a day trip and beautiful underwater experience tunnel. Much better than the ones in other Australian states , and really great engineering construction with a thick glass wall structure!
Fantastic experience: Worth the visit, stayed from 2:40pm to 4:00pm plenty of time to see everything and not busy at all.
Fantastic experience: Really good aquarium with stunning scenery flowing through the plentiful things you could do. Recommended to bring kids for a fun day out, especially with food and interactive experiences near the end of the aquarium. Be warned, could be a bit crowded on some days and times so be sure to book in advance. Make sure to take photos to remember it.
Fantastic experience: Superb , must see with family . Plenty of sea creatures can be seen , without fear .
Positive experience: EachĀ aquariumĀ displaysĀ fishĀ nativeĀ toĀ aĀ distinctĀ region,Ā andĀ theĀ tunnelĀ asĀ aĀ wholeĀ isĀ hypnotic. SeaĀ anemones,Ā jellyfish,Ā andĀ otherĀ aquaticĀ creaturesĀ enhanceĀ theĀ breathtakingĀ experience,Ā andĀ theĀ coralĀ displaysĀ areĀ veryĀ stunning. WitnessingĀ suchĀ aĀ vastĀ assortmentĀ ofĀ marinelifeĀ inĀ oneĀ locationĀ isĀ simplyĀ astounding. NotĀ onlyĀ isĀ thisĀ attractionĀ greatĀ forĀ natureĀ loversĀ likeĀ me,Ā butĀ itĀ isĀ alsoĀ aĀ greatĀ placeĀ forĀ kidsĀ toĀ learn.
Fantastic experience: Excellent underwater marine lives to observe it is one of the best aquarium of the world. One must visit with family.
Negative experience: overpriced for something that is over and done in about 20 or so mins. For $35 you expect alot more and is a bit of a let down. Save your $35 there are better places to go which are better value for your money (zoo, scitech etc).
Fantastic experience: AQWA is a privately owned aquarium in Hillarys, Western Australia. Located approximately 20 km (12 mi) north-west of Perth City. Dive With Sharks. Plunge into the beautiful world of AQWA's shipwreck coast aquarium and come face to fin with sharks, stingrays and hundreds of stunning fish.
Positive experience: Amazing and wonderful experience of underwater scenario easy parking and must visit with childrenās and family there is internal cafe too and big space
Fantastic experience: I got behind the scenes pass. Saw the octopus and learnt that is has 8 brains and 3 heart. Went onto the boat and saw the shark's, and other fish. Very nice gift shop, touched some baby shark's (patting animals pool) Super cool tour on the boat, saw the pipes and how much water goes into it.
Fantastic experience: AQWA is a great place for a family trip or anyone who loves the ocean! Itās informative, well laid out, and has a wide variety of sea creatures to explore. My personal favorite was the underwater tunnel. Walking through it felt like being inside the ocean, and the jellyfish section was absolutely mesmerizing. Thereās also a small touch pool where you can gently interact with starfish and even a small shark. The gift shop has lots of cute itemsāI ended up getting a turtle necklace and a pair of earrings as souvenirs. Entry was AUD 35 for adults, and I also did the glass bottom boat ride for an extra AUD 10. Totally worth it for the extra experience and view of the marine life from above.
Fantastic experience: We had lunch there and there was someone's hair the chicken burger chips were cold the coffee was not hot I asked for fresh mug it and I got it warm hot they should be wearing a hair net.
Fantastic experience: If you love the sea or ocean animals, donāt miss this place. This aquarium features marine creatures you wonāt find in many places in the world, and they actively rescue and study animals, making a real impact.
Fantastic experience: Amazing experience and a fun day out. You can enjoy the aquarium, its awe inspiring species and then enjoy a walk outside with different food and drink outlets available.
Negative experience: I went to AQWA in 2021 or 2022, I don't even remember the exact date as I was so disappointed. My wife too, she told me years ago it was different, with salt croc. When we went there, there was not too much to see and no croc at all. I give 2 stars for the fact an aquarium exist in WA. Surely good for kids and that's all, not for a growing man who come from overseas and visited various aquarium and zoo since kid.
Fantastic experience: Nice attraction for the family, you can cover everything in about 2-3 hours. The glass bottom boat ride wasn't worth it imo, but great as an experience if you're a tourist like me. Right outside the cafe it has an incredible view of the Perth ocean, very windy as well and great place for photos.
Fantastic experience: Great morning spent with the mokopuna (7 and 2.5 yr old). They were throughly in awe with everything they encountered especially the sharks and stingrays so are on their best behaviour lols. It was a great experience and we had smiles for miles. A highlight for our grand daughter was the mermaid show and our grandson loved the tunnel and the interactive tanks that he could splash his hands in. 100 photos and videos later (which we have had to look at about the same amount of times at home) I would say it was a successful trip.
Fantastic experience: Went to this like 2 years ago which was amazing and i loved the pufferfish and lionfish and i also loved the stingrays and sharks. We went to get some food and it was amazing, went outside and saw the view of the magnificent ocean. In my opinion, this is worth the money tbh and it was only like $30 and i was 10/10 recommend going wit ur kid or anyone.
Fantastic experience: āThe aquarium has, probably, the finest potato wedge that I have had anywhere in this world! And if you havenāt been to the aquarium⦠The sharks are cool. I got to pet a star fish, that was very nice. But the potato wedges are Amazingā - Tyler Childers
Fantastic experience: Always love coming here, been here since I was a kid and love getting to see all the fish. The underwater tunnel is obviously my favourite and the touch pool is amazing as you get to touch some seas creatures and see them up close.
Fantastic experience: One of the best places I have ever seen.Aqwa is so impressive and interesting.
Positive experience: The "over-the-head" aquarium is the largest in the whole Australia and you can go on a little floating boat, though you have to pay a separate fee of AUD 10 per person, but it's worth it. There is a lovely cafe inside and a few interactive stuff for kids. The car parking is all full and we had to walk at least 20 minutes one way with a toddler, that said it was well worth it.
Fantastic experience: Great experience for my son. Lucky enough to witness divers feeding the fish when we got there at around 11am.
Fantastic experience: A fantastic experience in Perth for both kids and adults! We enjoyed with the many different types of fish and corals, and learned a lot too.
Positive experience: Amazing place, AQWA - The Aquarium of Western Australia located in Hillarys / Perth, Itās perfect and amazing place to visit which give all the knowledge about marine life in Western Australia ( Western Australia has 12,000km long of coastline)
Negative experience: We went to the Mermaids Ahoy event today and it was the worst experience weāve ever had. We have three young girls and didnāt bring a pram as that is what is stated on the ticket yet there were people walking around with prams all through the aquarium. The mermaids were all outside and the lines were so long that the event mustāve been oversold. This would have been much better done in staggered times and not as a just show up whenever you want between 10:30-1:30. When we got there the event had only just began but yet there were mermaids on a break! I DO NOT recommend going to this event and we will not be returning next year.
Fantastic experience: This place is by far one of the most fun and informative places for children and any visitors in Perth! Great range of marine species fabulous lighting to emphasise on fish and their uniqueness, very helpful staff. Their cafe and gift shop equally adds to a great family day out with the kids. Their underwater tunnel has to be our favourite spot in this complex and despite visiting AQWA number of times yet always happy and excited to have a tour under the water. Cannot recommend this place enough.
Fantastic experience: First time here for us. Such a lovely experience My son absolutely loved it. Definitely recommend it, decent price for what you go and see. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: The visit to AQWA with grandkids is always enjoyed by all. As we did last year we timed it to see the mermaids and pirate too. Unfortunately, the mermaids this year were very disappointing. The segment was really boring with no proper interaction and almost half of the audience left 10 mts into the segment. Last year the mermaids was such a wonderful experience for the grandkids and soo much better scripted - they seemed a lot more experienced entertainers and kept the kids interested throughout their session. The pirate was fabulous as usual . Having said that AQWA is always a great visit and the staff are wonderful and helpful at all times.
Fantastic experience: One of the best experiences at an aquarium our family has ever had! The mermaids were so lovely and took the time to talk and interact with our kids. Huge shout out to Pirate Pete who made the day fun for all the kids and adults! Great experience highly recommend
Fantastic experience: AQWA The Aquarium of Western Australia in Hillarys, near Perth, is amazing. Itās the biggest aquarium in Australia and shows off the marine life of Western Australia. The 98-meter-long tunnel with sharks, turtles, and stingrays is a favorite. Kids love the touch pool where you can feel sea creatures like sea stars. Itās open every day from 9 AM to 4 PM. For a fun and educational day, AQWA is perfect!
Fantastic experience: Today I snorkelled with the sharks at Aqua with dive master Gordon, who was amazing! Gordon was very funny & super knowledgeable about all the fish & sea creatures. Would definitely recommend this experience to others! Also the reception staff are lovely. Thanks for an awesome experience Gordan -Hayley
Fantastic experience: Haven't been in years, but it is still a great place to visit with family and friends.
Fantastic experience: Same as its always been, I really enjoy the tunnel. Seems like a lot of the animals are rescues, which is nice to see.
Fantastic experience: Very enjoyable place and more things to see
Positive experience: We visited as a family and enjoyed the experience. The variety of marine creatures was impressive, especially the sharks and rays. The touch pool was a hit with the kids, and they loved interacting with starfish and other small creatures. The aquarium is organized well, making it easy to navigate. The cafƩ has decent options, though a bit overpriced.
Negative experience: 1 star for animal welfare. Really disappointing to see such small enclosures for the marine life. Shocked to see touching exhibitions with children pawing at starfish etc - this is incredibly stressful for these animals. No consideration within the exhibitions for noise levels which again would be very stressful for these animals. Very limited information on any rescue or breeding programmes. Unclear where baby sharks etc are sourced from and what happens when they grow up. Some sad looking rescue turtles in a small enclosure with, ironically, a map showing how far turtles roam in the wild. Obviously seeing the animals is interesting and it was a good cross-section of WA marine life. Would have no qualms paying or returning if enclosures etc massively improved and animal welfare put at the fore.
Fantastic experience: Went for the 1st time in 10years & was not disappointed. Also had the pleasure of taking my 5yo for the 1st time. AQWA has been consistently amazing ever since I was a kid. The exhibits are immaculate & the amount of educational material is so informative & great to see. The keepers are friendly & always willing to answer questions. The pirate ship at "The Marina" was a fave for my daughter. A childhood dream was to swim in the underwater tank & the addition of the Glass Bottom Boat was the perfect way to experience it affordably. I cannot explain how amazing it was, so surreal being behind the scenes & seeing how big the rays, sharks & turtle actually are. My inner child was so incredibly happy.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful day out with the kids. It was a reasonable price for a family day out and didn't disappoint. Lovely staff and well maintained facilities. You can take your own lunch and there are heaps of tables in shade to enjoy your lunch. You can get 10% discount as an RAC member, read the RAC website before buying the tickets.
Fantastic experience: Nice day out with Grandma. The facility has good access options perfect for nan (ramps, elevator, Stairs) to see the attractions. Bioluminescent jellys & Sharks are our favourite. A Great day out.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful experience, I took my kids when they were smaller n took them back recently on boxing day.they enjoyed every turn.very clean...quite.very informative....the cafeteria is a bit expensive but their food is good too.i loved it, my kids double loved it!
Fantastic experience: A really informative and interesting place. Paid for the glass bottom boat tour and was not disappointed. Beautiful coral, shark, ray and fish varieties on display in the general exhibits. The underwater tunnel was gorgeous and a real treat. Loved the kid-friendly touchpool where you can feel the starfish and Port Jackson sharks up close. The cafe inside also made it convenient to grab lunch and return to the exhibits thereafter.
