Abacus Aquatics is an Aquarium Shop based in the Kent / South East London area with 100 tanks stocked with a wide range of tropical and coldwater fish. All new fish are kept off sale until we are happy they are healthy and our wide range of different species of fish is regularly commented on both in store and in google reviews.
In addition we have a wide range of aquariums for sale, including all Juwel aquariums and cabinets. (We are a Juwel authorised dealer).
We stock a wide range of top quality aquarium plants together with all the necessary equipment needed to keep all your livestock healthy. We also aim to be highly competitive on all of our equipment and our prices usually match internet prices.

Fantastic experience: We had a lovely time browsing at the beautiful collection of fish here. Finally got this little guy.
Fantastic experience: Gentleman running the shop is very kind, helpful and caring for his fish. Tanks are normally very clean. Large amount of stock for a small shop. Managed to get almost everything for getting out tank set up, minus the substrate... We bought rocks, a tree feature (natural), test kits, beneficial bacteria and a few other things. We will soon be back to get some fish, most likely some honey gourami and rummynose tetras that he had there. Edited to add photos of later visit. Bought rummynose (photo is the new fish becoming acclimatised in our tank). We will be back for more.

Fantastic experience: Tanks are clean. I bought 10 chilli rasboras at a good price. I found there're several different type of freshwater fishes that compare to other LFS around, like red neon blue eyes rainbow fish.

Negative experience: I was extremely disappointed with the customer service in this shop. When we entered we were not greeted or met with any pleasantries. We enquired about returning a fish that was not suitable for our tank and the employee was not helpful and showed no interest in taking a look to resolve the situation. Overall, I would not recommend coming to this store if you want to have a welcoming and pleasant exchange.
I am sorry you were disappointed with the customer service but I would like to put Abacus Aquatics side of the events across so people reading the review can take a balanced view before deciding whether or not to visit the store..
Unfortunately it is very misleading to say you were returning a fish. You were in fact asking if Abacus Aquatics would take a fish in you had bought from somewhere else that wasn't suitable for your tank. As was explained to you at the time, Abacus Aquatics is very choosy about the suppliers we buy our fish from and has a policy of not taking fish in off the public generally as we would then have no control over where they have come from or whether they have been quarantined beforehand. It was also explained that not all shops take unwanted or problem fish in so I recommended rather than turning up at other shops, that you should phone round a few first to see if any would take it in. Although Abacus Aquatics couldn't help you directly, I would contend the fact that I explained the reason for our policy and recommended you phone several shops first to avoid further potential wasted journeys is a sign your position was not simply ignored and that practical advice was offered to help you resolve your situation. I hope the advice was taken on board should a similar situation occur in the future and that you have been successful in finding somewhere that was willing to take in your unwanted fish.

Positive experience: The price for fish is double the cost of ordinary aquarium shops
Dear Bob. Thank you for your review although I was very suprised to hear you think the cost of the fish is double that of ordinary aquarium shops. Most comments I get in the shop and through google reviews are that Abacus Aquatics has one of the best selections of healthy fish around and the prices are very reasonable / competitive. I currently have over 140 different fish in stock at the moment so I would really like you to give actual examples of prices to back up such a broad and damaging statement. It would also help potential customers who are reading this to make their own a balanced judgement based on actual facts.
Due to the number of fish in stock, it would be too long a list for me to give prices of every fish in this reply. Howevr, so potential customers can see my side of the story I will state some prices of some more common fish in stock at the moment. They are 6 for £20 for on cardinal tetras, bentosi white fin tetras, normans lampeyes and pentazona barbs. 6 for £15 on neon tetras, glowlight tetras, zebra danios and whte cloud mountain minnows.
Although you didn't mention the price of equipment, Abacus Aquatics strives to be competitive on fishkeeping equipment. We will always try to match (and in some cases even beat) internet prices on items such as Juwel Aquariums, External Filters (by qualtiy brands such as Oase, Fluval and Eheim, and LED lighting (by quality brands such as Fluval and Juwel).
Once again, I would ask you to give actual price examples to back up the damaging claim you have made against Abacus Aquatics so that anyone reading this can balance your claims against my response with actual facts from both ponts of view. I am always happy to be open and honest with people and if you can provide examples it would help everyone reading this to make up their own minds.

Positive experience: A little disappointed as travelled quite out of the way to visit this store (after checking opening hours via website and google and social media) but unfortunately found it closed when I arrived. Hi Tierney. I am really sorry Abacus Aquatics was closed when you visited. I had to close temporarily following an operation. I cannot say with 100% certainty of exact re-opening date but my recovery is going well at the moment I am currently hoping to re-open on Thursday 27th April. I will post an update on Google and and also update the shop answer machine when I actually re-open. If you can give me a call after I re-open, I will give you an idea of the kind of stock I have in before you consider making another journey to the shop. I am sorry once again but if you do re-visit Abacus Aquatics I will try to make up for the inconvenience of your wasted journey.

Fantastic experience: Bought some tetras from here, great shop with loads of interesting kinds of fish. The shop owner was very helpful and made sure before selling the fish that we had a properly cycled tank, which shows he really cares about who he sells to, putting the livelihood of the fish before profit. The tanks were all clean and well looked after, with all fish in good health.

Dear Marion. I think you are writing a review for an online shop with a similar name. Abacus Aquatics is definitely not like a warehouse. It is a traditional style shop with 100 aquariums stocked with fish, as well as display aquariums for sale and most fish keeping related equipment behind the counter. If you have not tried here it would be nice if you would consider popping along. You will find Abacus Aquatics is a completely different shop to the one you visited. I would hope that you would then agree with most other reviews about it having a wide range of healthy fish and all the equipment needed to look after them, as well as getting advice from someone who has kept fish for over 30 years.
Fantastic experience: Great place to go, you must wear a mask (understandable I think) to enter. I found it to be a fairly huge range of fish, I own two fish tanks so not a big enthusiast if that helps Range of fish was really good too, found quite a few (10+) different types of fish that I haven't seen around the aquatic shops in a 10 mile radius so that was lovely. The guy working there was super friendly and very helpful too, couldn't have faulted him there. Prices weren't too bad, some fish are more expensive than other shops, some was cheaper but the quality of the tanks seemed great and the fish didn't look unhealthy etc. Would definitely go back there.

Fantastic experience: Only one customer is allowed in at one time. He has a brilliant display of fish, we always buy ours here. He is very knowledgeable and asks about your tank, measurements etc and what fish you already have to make sure that the ones you want to buy will be ok.

Dear Col. I am very sorry to hear that you have had a problem with your fish. It would have been helpful if you had contacted the shop to establish exactly what the problem was and I would still encourage you to do this. If there is any problem whatsoever with any fish we sell we want to know. We don't want customers fish to suffer and we would need to address the situation both for the customer and for our own stock. I won't automatically rule out the problem came from the fish you bought from Abacus Aquatics as no shop can guarantee 100% of the time that all livestock is completely disease free. However, I ensure that all fish at Abacus Aquatics are quarantined and then carefully monitored before being put up for sale. Without further information about your aquarium size, stocking, maturity and maintenance regime it cannot be established whether the problem came from the fish you purchased from Abacus Aquatics, whether it came from other fish and the problem went unnoticed initally or whether it was down to the wrong conditions / water quality in your aquarium. Please contact the shop directly and I will try and get to the bottom of this problem and help to resolve it appropriately.

Fantastic experience: What a great shop Tony is a very experienced aquarist and gives newcomers to the hobby lots of help in trying to understand how to cycle a tank before introducing the fish and I have even seen him refuse to sell fish to impatient people who want to put fish straight into a new set-up. Fantastic experience: This is a great shop and Tony's knowledge is second to none. I have walked out of here skint many times due to the unrivalled choice of catfish/corydoras that are available. The hour + drive it takes me to get here is well worth it and I will be back soon

I have got plenty of other kinds of fish in stock but if you are still looking for more Corydoras catfish, I have 20 different kinds in stock at the moment. These include one I haven't seen before and another I have managed to get hold of for the first time in about 9 years.

Fantastic experience: I am giving 5 stars because it’s the best place in the South East that stocks a large selection of Corydoras. I have about 50 different types of Corydoras and I go most of them from Abacus. There are other types of fishes there as well. Dry food and live food for fishes are also available. In my own opinion it is well stocked for a medium sized shop. If you need something and the owner doesn’t have it, you can place an order and within a week or at most 2 weeks, he’s got them. I bought a used external filter online for 40 quid and found out it was missing some parts and was not sold as advertised. I was totally dejected but decided to go and see my friend at Abacus, he was able to tell me everything about the filter and also advice on parts I needed. He ordered them for me for less than 15 quid and the filter has been up and running for over a year now. A new one would have cost me 145 pounds. He’s knowledgeable and easy going. He can also get you fishes that are not available if you place an order. I bought some unique substrates from him which makes fishes and Corys in my aquariums look really nice. For me he’s the best Fish shop in the South East.

Fantastic experience: The store owner, Tony, is super helpful. He sold me an Askoll Pure tank over the summer and had plenty of good advice. The fish at Abacus Aquatics are clearly kept in good conditions, and there is an interesting mix of rare and more common types of fish. I bought 5 corys and some blue velvet shrimp. I'll be adding more fish as I get the tank established. It's worth giving that well-known chain store a miss and coming to this shop. I found the prices to be competitive, and the fish looked a lot healthier.

Fantastic experience: Out of all the aquatics stores we have visited, which is virtually all in the SE, this is certainly a big favourite. Don't be fooled by the size of this shop, it may not be the biggest but many of the tanks contain multiple species of healthy, well cared for fish. A very good selection of livestock, if you are looking for something a little different to the staples found in most shops there will always be a good choice here. The owner is extremely helpful and very willing to share his quite apparent extensive knowledge whether you are a beginner or a seasoned aquarist. Quite rare and welcome these days to find someone so passionate about the hobby and not just a business. We will be back again soon!

Fantastic experience: After being absent from this hobby for some time I was looking for a shop that is knowledgeable and stocks healthy fish, Not only does this shop have great examples of the usual suspects they also have lots of rare fish, not often seen in aquarium shops or online. Tony helped me plan and choice my new tank and continues to be a wealth of knowledge and the only place to buy more unusual fish. Highly recommended!!!

Dear Paul, I am pleased you found I was helpful in answering your questions. I would agree that the shop is relatively small but it does still have 100 aquariums. I would say a big advantage of being smaller than some shops is that you will always be served by someone with over 30 years experience of keeping and breeding a wide range of tropical fish.
I would like to add though that I am more than a little surprised you thought the shop only stocked an average range of tropical fish. I can only think you didn't look into many of the aquariums as I currently have 230 different species in stock ranging from common fish, not so common ones and several extremely rarely seen ones. In fact the 2 most common comments I get from people are 1) the fish are all so healthy and 2) the shop stocks so many ones they haven't seen elsewhere. I would therefore suggest people reading this review compare what most other reviewers say about the range of fish stocked, come and have a look themselves and then decide whether it is the kind of shop they want to visit whenever looking for new fish or fish related equipment or recommend to others.

Fantastic experience: Tony is a mine of information, very honest about what he is selling and super welcoming to his shop. Great selection of tropicals sold here and lovely wide range of plants and equipment. Now my regular local fish store even though he's not terribly close to me.

I loved the fact how the people in the centre we're friendly and knowledgeable to guide a first timer and help him make the correct decisions. Highly recommended for anyone who are planning to set up an aquarium at home.
