🗣️ Horniman Museum and Gardens: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Lovely, affordable and very very family friendly in a way I wouldn't have expected
Positive experience: Was lovely day out hasn’t changed since I was little but not much there anymore as it’s all being revamped. Wanted to go in the butterfly garden but not for their price
Positive experience: Really nice place, lovely grounds for an outdoor picnic. Plenty of exhibits to see which is nice, but everything is very small so you wouldn't end up spending more than 30 mins per area I'd say. Staff are lovely, friendly, very helpful and informative. The one thing I would say is that this is definitely overpriced. Some exhibitions / areas you have to buy a ticket separately for, although the museum itself is free to enter. The amount I paid to access 3 of the exhibitions for me and my child was not worth the money. They should really consider a flat entry fee for everything.
Hi Felicity, many thanks for your review and thanks for your feedback regarding the pricing. We will this on to the relevant team.
Positive experience: If you've got kids this is a lovely way to spend some of your weekend with them.
Fantastic experience: On our trip out from London toward Windsor we decided to make a stop here. Parking was simple enough we used the spaces by Sainsbury’s where the first couple of hours are free if you register through the app. Entry to the main museum doesn’t cost anything, though there are extra areas with a small charge, like the butterfly house. The museum itself was engaging and a bit different from the usual. The garden section wasn’t at its best during our visit, possibly due to ongoing work, but the view over London with landmarks like the Shard made up for it. There’s also a small petting area which seemed to be a big hit with children, so I’d say families get the most out of this spot.
Fantastic experience: lovely gardens, museum and cafe...and helpful staff..membership is worth it.
Fantastic experience: A fantastic space for a visit with children. The cafe was great. The aquarium was loved by the children. I wasn't bowled over by the butterfly room but it was an interesting experience. The Park surrounding it is also so lovely.
Fantastic experience: Good but waiting for the animal and bird section to reopen
Positive experience: I had a really good few hours at this experience today. The farmers market showed interesting wares, the gardens and views are lovely. Inside, I was looking forward to the musical instrument exhibit but the lighting was v dark and there was such a wealth of references it was quite difficult to read the text accompanying each one. I hope they upgrade this room - and experience - in future. The world anthropological one was better (although I felt like they capped a swathe of Asiatic indigenous peoples). The aquarium is small but pleasant enough. No time for the butterflies unfortunately for me and the natural history exhibit is being renovated... Well worth a visit as it wasn't too busy and I did enjoy it.
Positive experience: Great museum with an astounding collection of musical instruments. Wonderful views over London and snd a great café.
Fantastic experience: A good day trip for a family with kids. Interesting museum, beautiful gardens with diversity of plants and wildlife, green places for picnic, amazing view of the city skyscrapers. Fantastic butterfly house but be aware in summer it is super hot and humid. Highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: I’ve brought a group of children with additional needs here several times. All the staff are so knowledgeable of SEN and very accommodating. Even offered us ear defenders and quiet rooms! So much for the children to do too, thank you all so much for some lovely trips!
Fantastic experience: I love this place. There is a cafe where they sell ice cream. There are things in the museum and there is a garden and there are butterflies. The cafe is good.
Fantastic experience: A very good fun day out to the museum to see some nature and other country items. The garden has great signs letting you know the names of the plants.
Positive experience: Great day out, even though I just went to the butterfly house and the aquarium. The robot zoo seemed a bit childish. Be advised the house was very warm.
Fantastic experience: Been there a few times, it's a Lovely place, plenty to do, plenty to see for all the family....definitely going back
Fantastic experience: I have been here twice and all staff are so lovely and all the exhibits safe so cool and is perfect for smaller children !
Fantastic experience: Wonderful museum. So much to see and do. Kids loved it - so did the grownups, even those who've been many times before. We keep going back!
Fantastic experience: I booked the butterfly house which was surprisingly tiny but full of butterfly’s and incredibly hot so impossible to sustain a visit past 10-15 minutes and as such not worth the money. However the main galleries in the museum are wonderful and very toddler friendly. Again it’s not huge but the exhibits are fascinating. Out side you get expansive views across London and multiple small gardens including a beautiful gravel garden. It’s a wonderful day out and it’s easy to park around the Horninan Drive side of the entrance gates. I’m very excited about the building works that are underway for the new Batural History section. There is a spacious cafe with eye wateringly high prices so bring a pic-nic.
Hi Alison, thanks for your 5-star review! We understand the Butterfly House is quite hot especially when the weather is warm outside. As part of our zoo license, the butterflies needs a warm, humid environment for their welfare as tropical creatures. We will pass on your comments about the cafe prices too. Hope to see you again soon when the renovations are complete.
Fantastic experience: Great place to visit for adults as well as families nice café but equally nice to take a picnic Plenty of things for the kids to do aquarium butterflies see the animals alpacas et cetera
Negative experience: Treated ourselves to Plant Fair tickets and a visit to the beautiful butterfly house. Lots of plants and flowery loveliness on offer, if somewhat pricey. We found a lovely cool airy spot to rest and take in the vista with deckchairs helpfully placed under a shady tree behind the sunken garden, a welcome respite from the heat. Would have liked rather more choice of food stalls: filled baguettes or similar picnicy fayre would have just hit the spot - too hot for cooked meals, in our case. So we restrained our spending and enjoyed what our tickets gave us including discount entry to see the butterflies which were captivating. We'd arrived earlier than the ticketed entry at 11am and had to wait outside the gates sitting on a nearby wall which was a slight pain, could have been better advance communication to make clear that no entry would be allowed even to the grounds. All told, a very pleasant way to spend some peaceful time and enjoy the gardens with lovely views over London from the grassy hilltops.
Hi Melanie, thanks for the detailed review and glad you enjoyed the Plant Fair and Butterfly House. Unfortunately we aren't able to admit visitors before the event opens, as there are multiple vehicles on site with the traders setting up. We will make sure to make this clearer in our communications next year, and we will feedback your comments on the food.
Negative experience: If the gates are open, there are people enjoying the gardens, and there are no signs prohibiting entry, is it really wise and necessary for your badgeless male employees to yell at a lone middle-aged woman who has come in for her usual *daily* morning walk… …over what is apparently a plant fair!? And why not any of the other 2 dozen or so people walking in a park, including those who entered with me? Lock the gates. Put up signs. Don’t single out and deliberately frighten a woman. I’ll find another place to walk for fear of committing another grievous crime. Edit: my partner reminded me that this is the *second* time this has happened!
Hi Cheryl, we're really sorry you had this experience on the morning of the Plant Fair. One of our gates was left open in error on our part, and we will be following up with the team to address your experience directly with staff. If there are any other details you would like to share with us to help us investigate further, please let us know: [email protected]
Fantastic experience: Lovely museum set in a historic house. Enjoyed the aquarium in the basement, particularly the antique fish tank.
Fantastic experience: Always a lovely visit with my daughter. She loves seeing the fish in the aquarium. The food in the cafe is good and the gardens are absolutely stunning. The Sunday market is also a fun day out.
Fantastic experience: This museum is an absolute hidden gem! Me, my brother and 2 mates spent over 2 and a half hours in this wonderful, unusual place. Friendly, helpful staff; well curated, eclectic and diverse exhibits from around the globe. I especially enjoyed the music exhibition. Well done to one and all!
Fantastic experience: A very nice museum with garden and library. What we really loved was the aquarium and the music room- and while most of the museum is free- some displays like butterfly, aquarium and robotic animals had a ticket. Also has a massive garden with variety of flowers and also a feeding area where you can see animals at specific times. For those without a car, it’s a ten minute walk from train station and a good place to visit one time.
Fantastic experience: The Horniman Musuem is hands down my favourite museum in London. The Butterfly House, the Aquarium, the World Art Gallery, the Natural History area, the stunning gardens and farm, the Music Room, the special Exhibtions and more. No other museum offers so much variety. I highly recommend a visit.
Fantastic experience: The Horniman Museum and Gardens offers a variety of activities for children and families in a charming setting. It’s a great destination for a day out, with plenty of space for walks, picnics, playtime, and relaxation while enjoying the scenery. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and engaging, whether in the museum, café, or among the activity coordinators and garden maintenance team. The atmosphere is relaxed, and there are both free and paid educational areas worth exploring. We enjoyed the Animal Trail, the Music Room, the World Gallery and the Exhibition Room, as well as the Robot Zoo, Aquarium and Mini Beasts Hunt. We visited on a day when school children were also present, and it was easy to navigate the space. I highly recommend visiting the Horniman Museum and using their maps to help you find your way around.
Fantastic experience: Great for kids, having a picnic and visiting the museum part. Lots to do, they have a small farm there. As well as host events yearly.
Fantastic experience: A nice garden with more places to sit and overlook the park. The museum was interesting with a lot of different things from all over the world. I highly recommend this place, which is about one hour bus drive from Victoria Station
Fantastic experience: We had an excellent day out with our granddaughter, she particularly liked the butterfly house and aquarium, access to both of these was on a timed ticket. The museum was well laid out, not too crowded and full of interesting items. Staff were very helpful. Parking for the Horniman Centre is difficult with only two disabled bays on site. We parked in a nearby street free of charge. The café was a letdown for us. We chose ham and cheese Panini’s which took so long to serve that we had insufficient time to eat them prior to our aquarium visit. It was just as well that these were tasteless, the cheese unmelted and the bread was hard and dry, making them inedible. Just as well that we had no time left to eat them!
Hi Paul, thanks for your 5-star review, but sorry to hear about your experience in the café. We understand your time constraints, but if you ask our café staff in the future, they will be able to make you a fresh sandwich if you are unsatisfied. I hope you visit again and have a better experience in the cafe.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic array of activities set in well managed gardens. The butterfly house and animal walk were a great surprise and we spent many hours enjoying the sun in the gardens before popping into the museum which was free of charge
Fantastic experience: Lovely day out at the Horniman Museum! There are lots of free things to visit. Beautiful park to walk around, with spectacular views of London! Food and drinks are pricey, but you are welcome to bring your own packed lunch, and there are plenty of places to sit and eat at. Highly recommend this museum for all the family!!
Fantastic experience: Of all the museums in London, this one is my favourite It may not be the biggest, but it’s absolutely packed with charm, incredible artefacts and its own share of thought-provoking exhibits (including, when I first went, the Benin Bronzes). Staff are incredibly welcoming, and the museum itself is highly accessible for a range of ages (sensory exhibits for the little ones, and teeming with information for the nerdier adult ones). Well worth a visit - you might find yourself back again and again!
Fantastic experience: Family friendly. Exhibits are engaging, gardens are beautiful. Particularly enjoyed the butterfly house - very hot but beautiful.
Positive experience: Staff were miserable and one was rude to me. Aquarium is so small and hardly anything to look at so don’t understand why you have to pay to go in there as it’s a waste of money. Same with the butterfly house. The market was so expensive. I used to go all the time as a child but now I wouldn’t bother going anymore they’ve changed it so much and charge so much for things
Hi Jade, we're sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the Butterfly House or Aquarium. We do have plenty of free-to-visit places, exhibitions and collections across the site, including the Animal Walk, Gardens and World Gallery amongst others. We will also be opening new free exhibitions as part of Nature + Love in 2026. We hope to see you again soon.
Fantastic experience: It's a small museum but interesting. The aquarium is small but ideal for young children. We visited over the Easter weekend and it was very busy. had a nice cafe and gardens to sit in.
Fantastic experience: Coming to London? Come here !! Fascinating museum with something for everyone. Kids will enjoy the well presented and informative exhibits. Adults can add excellent interpretation signs and a good "flow" of information to the above. Beautiful, extensive gardens also with a plethora of displays and information, as well as good food and snacks add to the day's enjoyment. Don't miss the view over London city from the top of the hill. Plenty of public transport to the museum.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant place to go with the family especially if you have kids. Loads of outdoor space for them to run around and play. The butterfly enclosure was definitely worth the money, the kids loved it and so did I
Fantastic experience: Lovely place with gardens and plenty of outdoor space. Just remember to book the butterfly house in advance as it gets booked very quickly. Loved the aquarium, and the robot zoo did not disappoint, and their exhibitions were very nice. we looked the music room and world
Positive experience: Smaller museum in Forest Hill which is a little tricky to get to. Has some nice little exhibits and interesting rotating rooms for kids. Worth a visit, they have a tiny city farm and a reasonable butterfly house too within the wider park the museum is set in.
Fantastic experience: Essential destination. Great for kids. Food available. Lovely grounds. Don’t go in a car if you can help it. Bus or train but train involves a bit of a walk.
Fantastic experience: Visited the museum multiple times, I'm on love with this place. The gardens and museum is beautiful, looked after and so much things to do. It's a great family experience and lots to explore.
Fantastic experience: Really nice museum and exhibitions here. Plenty of things to do and wonderful gardens. Nearest car park is Sainsbury’s.
Negative experience: Customer service is poor from the elderly white attendant at the butterfly house. I also notice she reserves her sour attitude for some customers. Poor service from her ruined the experience. It takes nothing to greet the customer with a smile and be polite as I was to her. Food at the cafe was overpriced and not good quality. The chicken was tough and dry. The fries were dry. The only part of our order that was acceptable was the burger.
We're sorry to hear this and that you were unhappy on your recent visit. We will take your comments back to our team and the Café, but if you'd like to send us more detail about the time/date of your visit, please email [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Absolutely adored taking my daughter here for the day. We did the Aquarium and Butterfly House while we were there. Was slightly chilly out otherwise we would have explored the gardens, which are beautiful. We also had a nice walk around the other free exhibits within the museum, which were great, educational, and fun. Book in advance.
Positive experience: The grounds of the museum are great and we loved the butterfly house. However this museum itself was just ok. We found the staff unwelcoming and a little unfriendly. We paid for the Robot Zoo and the butterfly house which ended up being over £50 for a family of 4.
Hi Megan, we're sorry to hear you were unhappy on your recent visit. It would be helpful if you could send us more detail (such as date/time of your visit), please email [email protected] and we can investigate further.
Fantastic experience: Really lovely morning at the museum. It's free to enter, with the option of paying for entry to the aquarium, butterfly house, and any visiting exhibitions (Robot Zoo when we visited). The gardens are really pleasant with an interactive sound play area, which my kids loved. Entry to the aquarium was a little expensive for the size of the exhibition. However, they do offer a £1 ticket for all the paid exhibitions for people in receipt of Universal Credit. The butterfly house is also small for the admission price, but it is worth a visit. My kids found it magical, but the older adults found it far too hot! The cafe was very busy (half term) and very expensive. If you can, I recommend taking a picnic - there are plenty of picnic tables in the gardens, weather permitting. If you are in the area with children, a visit is highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: Great "little" museum with a very interesting collection of artifacts from all around the world. It has an aquarium too, but you'll have to buy separate tickets for that. It's not extremely busy so you can get your tickets at the entrance.
Fantastic experience: Great, lovely Museum to visit and the children love it everytime. The Aquarium and butterfly house and lovely extras too. Cafe is very expensive, as they all are. Food and service were great though.
Positive experience: A small and quaint museum in Forest Hill! I went with a friend and we took 1 1/2 hours to see the whole place. The gardens were really amazing and personally the highlight of the trip; the flowers and plants were really pretty, the Sunken Gardens were personally my favourite. They have lots of interactive areas, a highlight for families with kids, anf the staff were really nice! The museum was a tad disappointing. The natural history exhibition was under refurbishment (until 2026 if i remember), which I was fine with. The musical instruments display was impressive in terms of sheer size and the world gallery was very colourful and had a wide variety. However at some points I couldn’t really find the point of some of the artefacts/objects in some places. We hadn’t booked tickets for aquarium or butterfly house, as it was a last minute decision to visit. I think that might have made the experience better! The cafe prices and gift shop were quite expensive but the since the museum is free I have no complaints.
Hi Arnish, thanks for your review and we're so glad you enjoyed the Gardens. We'll pass your comments on to the Front of House teams (who will be chuffed!) and our curatorial team. We hope you will come back and visit again once the Nature Gallery reopens.
Fantastic experience: Well worth a visit I used the train and the bus was one took about 3 stops Butterfly house great cafe and well cared for grounds .Awesome place
Fantastic experience: Lovely gardens and interesting musical instruments as well as the more wide ranging World gallery. Didn't get to the aquarium or butterfly house (paid tickets needed, the museum itself & garden is free). Decent cafe and kiosk with ice cream etc outside.
Positive experience: First time here. Booked tickets for butterfly house and aquarium. I feel there needs to be a warning before you enter the butterfly house as it’s very humid and high temperature which I understand for the butterflies but makes the whole environment uncomfortable. The aquarium was ok but very small. The outside areas was okay too. The kiosk selling drinks and ice cream is very overpriced. £6 for a double scoop ice cream is far too much. Overall the museum is nice place to visit if you live locally or within reasonable public transport
Hi Mohammed, thanks for your review. As part of our zoo license, the butterflies needs a warm, humid environment for their welfare as tropical creatures. We will pass on your comments about prices to the Café team. Hope to see you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Lovely Sunday morning with family, made even better with a look around the weekly market. Gorgeous bits and bobs for sale and delicious food on offer. Bought a jar of Caro's Cook seasoning which I can't wait to try, as the tasting sample was delicious Visited the butterfly house which is always amazing. Lots to do, small animals to see, beautiful grounds and of course the various museum collections to view. Well worth a visit.
Positive experience: Love this museum as a nice place to go for a day out and is free. The extra exhibits are a great touch as they have to make money to keep open somehow. The aquarium is beautiful and well managed. Little areas for children to draw or dress up. However pencils were all broken but lovely member of staff went and sharpened some more for us. This time it was the robot zoo exhibit which was very interactive and scared the hell out of my 1yr old last time was dinosaurs always something fun. The location is great too as there’s a farm and beautiful garden to explore. Only issue was the gardens was under construction so children’s interactive area outside was not accessible. The cafe is clean and nice but very over priced and children’s menu really basic.
Hi there, thanks so much for your review and we are glad you enjoyed the exhibitions and Aquarium. At the moment, the Gardens are indeed going under some rennovation, which includes a new additional café where the menu will be aimed at kids. Please visit again sometime soon!
Fantastic experience: Came here for the overstuffed walrus- and that exhibition space was under renovation! Although very disappointed with not seeing the walrus, the other exhibits about music and world culture was very informative. There are tons of things to see, and even a market outside when I visited. Good for families with small children.
Hi Jade, so glad you enjoyed your trip to the Horniman! The Walrus will be back in 2026, so please do visit us again to see them again.
Fantastic experience: Spent a couple of hours mooching about. The Butterfly House was amazing. Loved the Superfood Salad I had for lunch in the cafe. They have a fabulous collection of string and wind instruments too, so I got to appreciate how they developed over the last 200 or so years.
Fantastic experience: Very lovely museum and garden! The fact that it’s free is a bonus. We went to the butterfly house and it was so magical Would definitely come back again!
Positive experience: It's a fantastic place for the family. Robot zoo for the kids, music museum, world museum, nature reserve, the view of London skyline, and the gardens.
Positive experience: Lot of things to see. Great for family and kids. Got a food court inside. You have to pay for the aquarium.
Fantastic experience: We were visiting the museum during a sunny day and stumbled across this small walk. It's not long but it's interesting and the area surrounding has incredibly expensive viewpoints for good photo opportunities
Fantastic experience: My partner arranged for us to go to the Horniman museum and gardens which if free to go in as I had never been there before also as you can see by the pictures they have a butterfly house and aquarium amongst other things but these you have to book and pay for so she arranged both for us as I have never been in a butterfly house before either and I love butterflies and I can safely say I wasn’t disappointed with the experience at all it was amazing the butterflies are so varied in size and colours and yes some of them will land on you and I was so happy that I was lucky enough to hold a few of them I would definitely go back again but I would dress differently because it’s very very warm in there The aquarium was also really good they have some great looking tanks representing different fish environments around the world and some amazing looking species of fish we enjoyed it so much I think we walked around it three times I will definitely be going back to the Horniman museum again I can’t believe I’ve never been before I absolutely loved it
Fantastic experience: Been meaning to visit here for years. Well worth a visit, and you can see most of the bits in a few hours
Fantastic experience: I recently visited the Horniman Museum in London with family and friends and had a lovely time. It’s a nice little museum with a great mix of exhibits, making it an enjoyable visit for all ages. While part of the museum was under construction, which was a bit disappointing, there was still plenty to see and do. The gardens and aquarium were particular highlights, and the atmosphere was welcoming. Despite the temporary construction, we had a great experience and will definitely visit again once everything is fully open!
Fantastic experience: Visited for the Robot Zoo attraction in Feb half term. It was busy so definitely pre-book. Interactive experience and lots to do for kids. The museum itself is always great to visit too and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon.
Negative experience: I do not recommend visiting this place in the weekend as is it too busy and there are mostly families with many young children who run and are being loud. I noticed that there is an emphasis on African culture, and there are many items from Africa. As the exhibition is called ‘World Gallery’, I expected to see more items and stories from different parts of the world. The staff made the experience a very tense one. I asked for directions as a tourist and I was explained well, but they seemed to police around, not to make this a nice experience for tourists.
Hi, thanks for your review. Our World Gallery is displayed by continent, and there are display areas for every continent in the world. February half term is also our busiest time of year, so we do recommend visiting during afternoons on weekdays in term time for those who would like a quieter visit. It would be good to hear more about your experience with staff, please do email us at [email protected]. Thanks again.
Positive experience: Pretty disappointing trip during the February half term. Half of the museum was closed and most of the things that were left required payment to enter. The walrus is gone, practically the whole of the ground floor is shut. It’s like a mish mash of ethnic items and some musical instruments - it no longer feels worth the trip. Also couldn’t go into the conservatory but I think that was the case last time as well. I wouldn’t go again after this visit, it felt like a waste of our day.
Hi Zachary, we're sorry you were disappointed not to see the Walrus on your visit. February half term is our busiest time of year, so we do recommend visiting during afternoons on weekdays in term time for those who would like a quieter visit.
Positive experience: It's a nice little museum. Part of the museum is under construction-big disappointment for us as the main reason for our visit was to see the famous walrus. Nope, not there. The website does bot mentioned it. Apparently it will reopen in 2026. The aquarium is the smallest we have ever been. Lovely but ticket is overpriced for the 10-15 mins experience. It was very busy today, the exhibitions were crowded. The butterfliy house is a bit disappointing. The butterflies looked so distressed flying around like mad. Also overpriced. Loved the exhibitions, especially the music room. The robot zoo is awsome! The best part of the day.
We're sorry you were disappointed not to see the Walrus on your visit, but glad you enjoyed your visit to Robot Zoo and the Music Gallery. We do mention that the Gallery is closed until 2026 on the Homepage and Plan Your Visit pages, but will review to see if we can make this clearer. February half term is our busiest time of year, so we do recommend visiting during afternoons on weekdays in term time for those who would like a quieter visit.
Negative experience: Massively underwhelming. Avoid if you have tinnitus: Bizarre and totally random collection of objects, that I assume other museums didn't want. Toilets are hidden? (Ground floor sign says toilets in basement- a daunting prospect with a buggy) but then subsequently found TWO toilets, with disabled access, hidden on the ground floor! Café took 30 minutes to produce a bacon roll. Random stuff in glass cabinets, but a braille map ? The surfaces are all reflective and so noise levels, when children are present, are phenomenal. Still have tinnitus hours after leaving. Half the space seemed to be closed?
Fantastic experience: We went as part of the Chinese NY celebrations, it was a really special night with calligraphy lessons (should definitely be longer!), talisman making (perfect), tea tasting (booked, didn't get a chance to experience) & live music at intervals. Staff were really helpful & knowledgeable. It's refreshing to have local things that get the community together - thank you. Only thing I could add is when I enquired about experiences, I wasn't told about all the other one's i could've signed up for. As I have some mobility issues, this would've made helped. However, definitely recommend popping in here & going to the room where you can play actual instruments - such fun!. It's been years since I've been there, will definitely go more often. Many thanks
Positive experience: I last went to this museum about 45 years ago. It was a wonderful place then. Now it seems to have been refuebed and all the fun has been taken away. Although there is still one small gallery that is free the aquarium and other galleries are all charged for. There is a cafe on site but this is an expensive franchised cafe.
Positive experience: Very busy and noisy inside the museum, however a great place to take kids. Lots to see and interesting for adults too. Membership an advantage as otherwise quite pricey. They also did a concession for people with disabilities which was helpful.
Fantastic experience: Lots to see in here. All can be done in the free sections of the museum within 1 hour 30 minutes. In the gardens on a Sunday there is a market. Lots of local wares and food on sale. Good for an evening out with young kids.
Fantastic experience: A great outing for the entire family. Each display has some great activities for children. Will highly recommend it.
Positive experience: The museum is free and nice to visit. The butterfly room is quite expensive considering the size. The aquarium is also very small. I understand that the museum being free means that they need to make money from the cafe and the other exhibitions, but I think the other things are over priced.
We're glad you thought your visit to the Horniman was nice, and we're sorry that you were unhappy with the prices. The income from the attractions, café and shop does go to helping fund our work and look after our collections, as you say.
Fantastic experience: Well worth a visit, will go again in the summer. Beautiful gardens, interesting, quirky museum which I thoroughly enjoyed walking around. Free entrance but you pay for the aquarium and butterfly House. Cafe small and very busy.
Fantastic experience: Impressive little museum! It's not massive but the items in the exhibitions are impressive! I learned a lot and I feel like I still need to come back for more! Totally recommended museum!
Hi Pedro, thanks so much for your review and very glad you enjoyed our collections and exhibitions! Hope to see you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Free museum with huge grounds. Although the actual museum is not massive, the park around is perfect for walks. There’s also a butterfly park but you’ll need to pay to get in. Personally there’s nothing special about this some people like it. Overall great place to visit with the kids
Positive experience: Aquarium and butterflies are overrated and overpriced. Music and world galleries are top tier.
Positive experience: It’s very kid-friendly which makes it quite chaotic. The natural history section is closed until next year (or 2026? Cant rmb correctly). Nevertheless it’s not overwhelming with too many collections.
Fantastic experience: Tiniest treasure of the city! Home to many beautiful sea creatures and beautiful cultural displays. Learned a lot my first trip here. If you’re looking for a fun, quick weekend trip, this is the place.
Thanks so much for your review and so glad you enjoyed your visit! Hope to see you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Such a lovely museum, where to start? The staff are so friendly and helpful, the cafe food is tasty and queues aren't too long, the exhibitions are interesting and fun. The butterfly house is by far the best place in the museum and so wonderful. We had such a good day and will definitely be coming back again soon!
Positive experience: We visited to see the dinosaur exhibit, which was small but very good. There were quite a few distressed children who I'm guessing didn't expect the size/noise/movement of some of the models. The artwork in the exhibit was incredible. We also visited the other galleries and the aquarium, all of which were informative and good. If the weather had been better we would've looked at the gardens too, we'll do that next time.
Fantastic experience: A brilliant museum showcasing an avid collector's interests. It's how museums used to be and should be, packed with items of interest with no dumbing down in an attempt to entertain. Set aside at least a couple of hours and visit over and over. Oh, and it's great for kids of all ages too - our grandchildren loved the aquarium and the current dinosaur exhibit was a real favourite. I mustn't forget that the butterfly house is a must too.
Fantastic experience: It's a lovely space to enjoy time with family. The exhibition space is quite small and cozy, so expect to take your time navigating through the crowd, but the space is lovely, well arranged, interesting and fun. There are some renovations happening so part of the exhibition is closed until 2026. It's still very much worth the visit. There is a Sunday market happening each week with some great local sellers and artists. The little zoo is also a lovely addition.
Fantastic experience: I regularly trade at the Horniman Market in the Bandstand on a Sunday selling my paintings and prints. I love the sense of community at the gardens and the customers who come to visit from all over the world. It's a great day out
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place for all ages. Brilliant that much of it is FREE too! Lots to see & do both inside and out. Well worth a visit. Museum and Gardens were busy but not overcrowded. Cafe busy but efficient service. Bonus of real life cafe cat to discover!
Positive experience: Free to enter museum and grounds. Venue is clean, well staffed and lots of options of things to do. Seems to be an absolute parent draw with kids everywhere which is quite loud if you don't have them. The aquarium an additional cost but worth a visit. It's small and can be hard to view if kids take over, but at quiet times its lovely. Spent about 2-3 hours inside but sadly raining when we went outside.
Positive experience: Not bad for a quick half day out. A couple of hours well spent. Obviously, it doesn't compare with most of the central London museums but nice enough. Has a few animals, a decent cafe and good toilet facilities
Fantastic experience: Very nice place for visit, they had very nice collections of local heritage and musical instruments. It is fee and you can expect student during weekdays. Aquarium and butterfly house is paid. Very nice ground for walking, flower garden is not maintained properly at this moment, may be will be it will be beautiful during spring time.
Fantastic experience: Went with my 2 year old and had a really good time in the garden with all the juicy slugs, the butterfly house (thanks to knowledge-rich Jasper), Aquarium (a bit smaller than expected) and then the animal walk outside with the HUGE mutant white rabbit All the staff were really nice, very good for toddlers and I recommend getting cakes at the cafe early because they sell out!
Fantastic experience: A place where we have been often when the kids were small and we had lots of fun. Revisited this weekend and it’s still a beautiful place even though it’s not all open because of refurbishment in the main area, but still lots of things to see: music room, pop-up room, adolescent wonderland, aquarium (we paid to see it), garden, little farm, playground, coffee shop. This place has something for everyone. Nice, helpful staff. Highly recommended. Garden is beautiful and clean.
Fantastic experience: Lovely green spaces, sound garden, butterfly house and nature trail. Cafe was a bit pricey but food was good. We didn’t spend much time in the main museum but will be back for sure!
Fantastic experience: One of my favourite museums which is free to get in with a lovely flower garden that has information about the different plants. A farm in the park, a butterfly place, aquarium, a section on musical, instruments, history and artifacts from around the world. There is also a lovely cafe with refushment or food to buy. There are so of course rest rooms inside the museum and in the park.
Wonderful to hear Omar, please come again soon!
Positive experience: Lovely gardens, nice (albeit small) animal section and lovely 'world' exhibition section. Also has a small aquarium that can be viewed for a reasonable price with some stunning exotic fish. The museum also has free WiFi which was useful for using WhatsApp when members of the group drifted off to different parts of the museum to peruse their own particular interests a good afternoon out and well served by good transport links. An urban oasis that is recommended.

Fantastic experience: Unique and wonder-full culture bites from around the world. Small collection of so much to see!! Nicely surprised by everything at Horniman - the gardens, the musical playground and the butterfly enclosure.

Negative experience: Hey people it’s Kay here from the Jerk drum ashes. I’m writing from the Jerk and Twerk event at Horniman Museum. Let me tell you about the HORRIFIC experience I’ve had. To start the wait time was ridiculous my husband and I were waiting to get into the event for approximately 45 minutes while standing in a queue. I have bad knees so safe to say I was FURIOUS when I got into the event and wasn’t offered anything for compensation. Once we got into the event we found a place to sit which was behind the BBQ and occasionally the wind would the smoke in our direction and we was basically Vaping chicken (As seen the picture below). I was starving so my husband got us some Jerk chicken and Jamaican rice and beans. When I took a bite of the leg it was a deep pink colour. The chicken was still alive and clucking (As seen in the picture below) I was SHOOK to my core. I quickly spat it out and prayed salmonella wouldn’t strike me down. On top of that, the weather was terrible typical for London and I felt like a pigeon whisperer with how many pigeons rolled up to me. I bet they didn’t even pay for entry. In conclusion, don't eat live chickens.
Positive experience: Such gorgeous gardens and as it is a little bit far out, theres usually not many people unless theres a school trip. The animal walk is a MUST! It's free to the public as well which is brilliant. The actual museum is lovely too, free entry with lots of different artifacts from all over the world, and lots of interactive activities! The aquarium was a bit small but had some lovely species to see. The only downside I would say is that The butterfly walk was quite small for the price that we paid.
Fantastic experience: We love the Horniman museum its so good for a local day out. Our little one loved it too they have a nice little variety of animals aswell as the market on a Sunday so perfect if you're looking to have a picnic or even just a wander around.
