🗣️ Westport Aquarium: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Staff are friendly and informative! We enjoyed feeding the various fish (and two ducks!) shrimp. (: We had a good time.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! Our fish and ducks appreciate your visit as well! :)
Fantastic experience: I really liked feeding the fish shrimp. Staff gave us a tour. I also like the price for it. The kids liked it.
We are glad you and your kids enjoyed feeding the fish and enjoyed your tour! Thanks so much for Visiting the Westport Aquarium! We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: This is a neat place. There are lots of local fish to observe. I was a little skeptical at first, as the tanks seemed dirty but was pleasantly surprised as the staff explained that the water the fish are swimming in comes straight from the ocean. They're swimming in their natural waters. The kids enjoyed feeding little shrimp to the fish who happily gobbled them up. There were a couple of ducks to feed as well. There is a small area where you can touch a starfish. We had a good time. Our kids are 5 and 9. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable.
Thanks for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! We are glad you enjoyed your visit.
Fantastic experience: They give you small shrip cups with every ticket to feed all their fish. Staff very nice and informative on every species they have! Would Definitely recommend checking them out!
Thanks so much for your visit! We are glad you enjoyed feeding the fish and learning about our local species.
Negative experience: Place was just sad. Not a lot of enrichment. A lot of poop in corners in the duck cage. Blind duck constantly stepping in poop. The fish looks sad. False advertisement of a shark all out place. I wouldn't give my money
I am sorry you had a bad experience. We were short staffed if you came last weekend. Usually the duck enclosure is quite clean but ducks are messy and our ducks are not blind. You might remember a duck from past years that was almost 18 years old. She was quite healthy. But as our vet said she was an ancient duck and as with many of us that get older sometimes our eye sight doesn't work as well. I expect that if you come back again you will have a better experience.
Fantastic experience: Alex was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. We came from our of town and had a wonderful experience and the kids learned a lot. Highly recommend!
We are glad you enjoyed your tour with Alex and learned a lot about our local Pacific Northwest species! Thanks for your visit to the Westport Aquarium!
Positive experience: Small but the ppl were very knowledgeable about the fish they had there and you gotta feed the ducks.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium. We are glad you enjoyed feeding the fish and the ducks! We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: ...Aquarium in Westport with lots of history, gems and culture, a great place to hang out with family and friends..
Thanks for visiting the Historic Westport Aquarium! We hope you will hang out and visit us at the aquarium again soon! You might be interested in our upcoming direct animation workshop. We will be watching the film we all make on an antique hand crank 35mm film projector. We would love to have you and your family and friends join us for this fun activity at the aquarium, it will be starting on Fridays and Saturdays in early October. Feel free to contact us if you want more information.
Fantastic experience: This was an amazingly wonderful experience for such a small space, I think we spent almost 2 hours there. We really enjoyed Alex's tour, so knowledgeable and fun to listen to:) thank you
Thanks so much for visiting the Westport Aquarium!!! We are glad you enjoyed Alex's tour! We hope you will visit again soon!
Fantastic experience: They have an elaborate seawater circulation system, and all their tank water is directly drawn from and returned to the harbor. Admission includes complementary fish feed. Extremely friendly staff.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium. Sorry for the late reply.
Fantastic experience: If you don't visit the Westport Aquarium, your life will remain unfulfilled! No words but VISIT, FEED THE FISH, FEED THE DUCKS, MAKE ART, HAVE FUN!
Thank you so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium Felicia!!! The ducks and fish appreciate your visit very much also!!! And we DO encourage you all to make Ocean Art and lots of it! We hope to see you again really soon!
Fantastic experience: Enjoyable family owned aquarium. The staff is knowledgeable & helpful. This historical PNW gem is worthy of a visit.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium!!!
Fantastic experience: Thankyou Washington fishquest for the recommendation went today with thr family had a blast staff super friendly and attentive. My kids loved feeding the fish some shrimp and getting to touch a starfish. Will be back for more family adventures.
We love Washington Fish Quest too!!! Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium, we are glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic experience: What a marvelous experience we had in the aquarium. We fed the fish, learned the names of many of them, fed a starfish(!) and the young man who helped us, Alex, was patient, kind, funny and knowledgeable. If you get a chance - GO!
Thanks for your marvelous kind words. We are glad you came to the Westport Aquarium and enjoyed a tour with Alex! We apologize for the late reply.
Fantastic experience: this is the best aquarium I've ever been to!! It's a must to stop by. the small aquarium shows the local fish and other animals. They're clearly well taken cared for and loved because once you step up to the glass, they swim right up and observe you or try to play with you. you can also feed them shrimp! the admission is affordable, $10 for adults, $6 for students. My friends had forgotten their student ID's but the employees believed us. my favorite was how friendly and enthusiastic the employees are. it was a very casual and light environment with the staff making jokes with us as soon as we walked in. Alecks was a great tour guide and he was very knowledgeable. A little cute preteen boy was also helping us around and he was just as knowledgeable and very passionate about the aquarium! he was very excited to show me some baby sea anemone. it's very warming to see a young child being passionate about sealife. something I noticed is that the staff really care about the animals. they've named each one, know each ones history, and know each animal's specific behavior and quirks. I'm really glad my friends and I saw the aquarium sign and decided to stop by. this might have been one of my most memorable experiences on our trip and I definetly want to stop by next time!!
Thanks so much for your wonderful comments and review of the Westport Aquarium. We are so glad you enjoyed your tour with Alex and one of our student interns. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: We've been here 2 years in a row and really have a good time with the little one. They've got a platform for shorter children to stand on so they can get right up to the tank to feed the fish. It's a lot of fun to watch. Alex, the guide, has a ton of aquarium knowledge. We've seen him this year and last. This year, he helped us spot skeleton shrimp. There are some crafts for kids to do at the front as well. The staff is friendly and we hope to visit again soon.
Thanks so much for visiting us more than once. The aquarium is often a different experience with different seasons as we circulate our water from the local marina 24 hours a day, the kinds of seaweeds, sponges, skeleton shrimp and other small creatures that grow in the tanks change with the seasons. Thanks also for sharing your wonderful photos of your visit to the aquarium. We hope you come back soon!
Fantastic experience: If you are looking for something different, and love oddity type things this is a great place. They give you a cup of small salad shrimp to feed the fish and ducks. The employee that played the piano was brilliant!!
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! I will pass on your kind words to the piano player!
Fantastic experience: Amazing place! Must see if you are in Westport. Everyone working there is very kind and knowledgeable. Was very exciting to see the local fish and get to feed them in top of it. Level set your expectations and you’ll have a great time learning about and seeing the local fish along with all the cool washed up skeletons!
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! We are glad you enjoyed feeding the fish and also enjoyed the skeletons that our staff and community have worked hard to articulate. We hope to see you again soon!
Positive experience: Glad to see it open and running! Getting to feed the fish and the touching pool was a great extra. Not huge and not the biggest selection but again just so happy to see it back open since its closing during Covid-19 pandemic, as it was a place that was instrumental as a younger girl and a place we visited often to feed the seals while growing up some 20 years ago now. Friendly and knowledgeable staff also. Keep up the great work/progress.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium. We have been running the Westport Aquarium for 15 years and it has been running since 1957. Our hours are seasonal and follow the fishing seasons. So we are often open 2-3 days a week in Winter and 5 days a week in Summer. But we often take appointments in the winter also. Glad you enjoyed your visit and we hope to see you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Loved it.. it was fun and the people working there are amazing..
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! We hope you will visit again soon!
Positive experience: Small but very interesting with local sealife and touch tank. Collections of star fish from all over the world. Extremely helpful and informative staff. Family and pet friendly.
Thanks. We are glad you enjoyed your visit to the Westport Aquarium.
Fantastic experience: Perfect for a rainy day. Cute little aquarium. Only $6 to get in for students. They give you shrimp to feed the animals, which was an unexpected surprise. Feeding the rock fish, starfish, anemones, and muscovy ducks was my favorite part. Very knowledgeable staff and you can tell they really care about the animals. All animals are donated from fishermen. And yes, the tanks are murky but because it is from westport. Natural water is murky
Thanks so much for visiting the Westport Aquarium! We are glad you enjoyed your visit and enjoyed feeding the fish and ducks. Thanks also for your kind words about our staff and the local Westport Fishermen!!! We are indeed lucky to live in an area with so many talented fishermen!!!
Positive experience: Family owned. Owners are very nice, passionate and knowledgeable. I feel bad they have to give a disclaimer about the small aquarium size and silty water appearance not matching the big zoo aquariums- obviously some customers must complain, but their honestly is commendable. We are from out of town and were looking for a fun activity with our kids. They give out shrimp to feed the fish, which, even though we have fish as pets at home, it was a lot of fun. And my kids liked touching the starfish. Nice little shop on the front. I enjoyed playing the Steinway upright piano. I would come back, if anything because the owners know a lot about the aquarium and the town.
Thanks for visiting the Westport Aquarium and for your kind comments about the aquarium. We talk about the water to raise awareness. I have heard clear tropical waters related to a desert. They do not have as much plankton living in the water in the tropics as we do here. Our Burrowing Sea Cucumber and many other fish are quite happy with the plankton in the water. Without it they would not be as healthy as they are. It does sometimes make it harder to see the fish, but we appreciate your understanding. We hope to see you again soon. Thanks so much!
Fantastic experience: We loved it and the work they do for the environment.
Thanks so much! We are glad you loved the Westport Aquarium. And yes! Environmental work is very close to our heart! Sorry about the delay in response.
Negative experience: While it is very cool to see the aquarium, it is very dark. Most of the tank windows were so dirty/cloudy that you could hardly see the fish, and while having enthusiasm about working at an aquarium is great, following people around who have stopped looking at you and act very disinterested in anything you say is a clue to go back to the front desk and just let then be. I won't go back. It's great that they are the second oldest aquarium on the west coast, they need a lot of work to be worth going to.
I am sorry you were disappointed in your visit to the Westport Aquarium. We work hard to engage our visitors in learning about the local species that are displayed in our aquarium. Aquariums- especially 65 year old Aquariums, are a little bit darker than your average big box store because the lower lighting in the room makes it easier for the visitors to focus on the fish in the tanks. Our water is circulated directly from the marina 24 hours a day so it is nutrient rich with plankton much like the water in the marina. Since we pull water from the estuary side of Westport we are more effected by the silts from the nearby mud flats.
Fantastic experience: Really awesome little aquarium highlighting the native species. Very reasonably priced and you get to feed the fish! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and had tons of fun stories about the history of the aquarium, town, and the fish. Very friendly staff and it was an interesting piece of history where it was all the original building and tanks.
Thanks so much for visiting the Westport Aquarium! We are so glad you enjoyed your tour. Thanks for also mentioning that all of our fish and invertebrates are native to the Westport Outer Coast and they are also brought in by our local charter fisherman. We hope to see you again soon at the Westport Aquarium!
Negative experience: The admission is very high and it is a very small room. $7 for adult and $5 for kids. I was astonished and flabbergasted by how dirty the tanks were- and I’m not just talking about the murky water. Very inch of the tanks are covered in scum. There is a ton of excess food (shrimp) just littering the tanks. The staff give you cups of shrimp and encourage you to just dump them at random into tanks and to get refills. Instead of carefully controlling their feedings. There is water on the floors and the floors have no traction. The front area is very crowded and the rest of the aquarium is dim.
Thanks for your visit to the Westport Aquarium. A bag of chips at the local store costs about 5 + dollars when not on sale, likewise if you want a state of the art Aquarium I think the price is more than reasonable. We tell our visitors regularly that they should break the shrimp up for the smaller fish and put them in one at a time. Refills on shrimp for our visitors is rare actually, most people do not ask for seconds, and when they do it is usually because they are having a great time. Our water in the aquarium is circulated 24 hours a day from the local marina, and it is fed by the nutrient rich silty mud flats of the estuary just outside the marina. It is important to note that visibility in the ocean varies widely. We vacuum our tanks very regularly, but we are not the tropics. Our water is like out land full of healthy living things.
Positive experience: Staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. 3 stars because the tanks all looked really dirty and some very small. It made me sad for the animals.
Thanks for your visit to the historic 65 year old Westport Aquarium! The concrete tanks that were built in 1957 have recently been painted on the outside and we circulate our water 24 hours a day from the local marina, so it has a lot of the plankton like the water does in the wild. Our water is full of tiny plants and animals. It is nutrient rich much like our land here in the Pacific Northwest. We also live in a region with a lot of silt. If you look at an aerial photo of this area the silt really collects along the jetty here. We live in an estuary environment and it is part of the ecosystem. We vacuum the tanks regularly and the fish and ducks are happy.
Fantastic experience: Super cute aquarium! They gave us cups of shrimp at the front desk to feed the fish, crabs, starfish, and sea anemones, which was so much fun. They have whale, sea turtle, and sea lion skeletons articulated on display, it was really neat to touch them and feel the texture of the bone. Our tour guide was super helpful and informative and made the experience so much better! And they had a really cool shark hat. I would recommend this aquarium to pretty much anyone!
Thanks so much for your kind words about the Westport Aquarium! We definitely put a lot of our heart and soul into the Aquarium. It has 65 years of wonderful history. Thanks for your support! We couldn't do it without great aquarium visitors like yourselves!
Fantastic experience: My girlfriend and I were here last Friday and last year and we always enjoy feeding the animals shrimp. When we fed the ducks one of them was being a little greedy and wasn't sharing and sadly one of them didn't get shrimp. Overall next time she and I are in the area we do plan on coming back!
Thanks so much for your return visits to the Westport Aquarium! All of the ducks get fed after hours by our staff too- they get a mix of poultry feed and all kinds of vegetables. So rest assured they will be fine.
Fantastic experience: So neat. Getting to feed the fish, and the gentleman giving the tour had so much knowledge! Cannot wait to bring my daughter back in July!
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! We look forward to seeing you in July!
Fantastic experience: Small place but fun to check out local sea creatures and some cool skeletons. Alex is extremely knowledgeable and a great tour guide. Very informative. We loved being able to feed the fish and ducks.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! Glad to hear you enjoyed Alex's tour. We are very grateful to have such talented staff!!!
Fantastic experience: Really fun little place to visit. You get to feed the fish and ducks and there is a really cool whale skeleton!
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! This winter we might just have a few extra hours to complete our tiny house inside the Gray Whale. We hope you'll be back, to go inside the whale when we complete the next stage of our Gray Whale Exhibit.
Fantastic experience: Kathryn and Cameron were great, my students had a blast!
Thanks so much for bringing your students for a field trip to the Westport Aquarium, and thanks for the awesome photos of the students with their underwater ROVs in the marina too!! I am glad your students enjoyed it!
Fantastic experience: Admittedly kind of small, but lots of fun, the ladies that worked there made it a really enjoyable experience. Giving us lots of personal attention and activities for the whole family. There are definitely better aquarium in terms of what they have, but the experience and welcoming atmosphere makes up for it.
I am glad you enjoyed your experience at the Westport Aquarium. Thanks for visiting, and thanks for your kind words about our staff! They can sure tell some awesome fish stories!
Fantastic experience: Me and my fiancee came in small but really fun. Staff was really nice and helpful. I really enjoyed it
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! We are glad you enjoyed visiting with our staff and hearing our ocean stories.
Fantastic experience: Great place. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, and it was fun to feed the fish. We even got to bring our dog inside with us.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! We notice that sometimes dogs like the fish as much as people do. One visitor even had their dog playing hide and seek with the Buffalo Sculpin awhile back.
Positive experience: I appreciate their efforts, but this is a one time visit for us. Not a lot of fish on display. Fun to feed shrimp to the dish and ducks. We were in and out in probably 20 minutes.
Thanks for your visit. I have learned over the years that it is more the amount of time one spends observing each fish, that makes ones time with the fish enjoyable. We are deeply committed to keeping as many fish as possible in their natural ocean environment. At any one time we have about 200 fish and invertebrates in all. That is quite a bit for a small aquarium.
Fantastic experience: I think it's a really cool place to go if you like to go see fish and the fact that you get to feed fish with your admission
Thanks so much Michael! It is made extra special by the local fisherman that come and share their stories about the fish that they see in our local waters.
Fantastic experience: My husband recently took our son and our 3 year old twin nieces here. My son has talked about it ever since, and insisted we take his older sister, and some family friends, the next time we were in town. While we were sad to see the aquarium closed when we were there this past weekend, we fully respect and understand. We will definitely stop by on our next visit to Westport. Added bonus that our pup can tag along with us! <3
Thanks so much! We are so glad that your family and your son enjoyed their visit. We look forward to seeing you and your pup soon!
Positive experience: Good experience for the kids employees are very informative on the animals they have. Loved the free paint area the kids can paint necklaces and paper plates for free, feed the fish for free all with admission.
Thanks so much for your visit. We always enjoy seeing the wonderful art that the kids, families and art lovers of all kinds create at the aquarium.
Fantastic experience: The kids had a great time feeding the fish shrimp. My favorite was the ducks. I had never seen that type of duck, they were pretty. The kids also got to decorate paper plates and put them in the window... pretty cool place
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium. The fish and the ducks appriciate the food and the great company. We hope to see you again soon.
Fantastic experience: The kid that works the exhibits loves his job so much, you can't help but get excited too. It's the only aquarium we've ever visited that let's you feed the fish.
Thanks for visiting the Westport Aquarium.
Fantastic experience: Great staff! Was a blast, I really enjoyed getting to feed the animals and learn about local species. They have an amazing collection of marine life skeletons as well, each with a story to tell. I highly recommend this stop for everyone! From kids to the crankiest of adults.
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium! We are glad you enjoyed your visit. All of our marine life skeletons are articulated and preserved with great care by the Westport aquarium staff, interested students, and other members of our community. Our staff are very proud to share their ocean stories with you. Thanks for your visit and we hope to see you again soon.
Negative experience: Skip it. It's gross and it's filthy. The building should be condemned. Just a dark room full of dirty tanks.
I am sorry you felt that way. We did actually have you down for an appointment for your birthday group. Unfortunately you came before your appointment time and the aquarium was very busy. If you had gotten a proper tour you would have learned that it is a historic aquarium with water that circulates from the local marina 24 hours a day.
Fantastic experience: This is such a wonderful little place! The animals are well-loved and taken care of, and the staff truly enjoys what they do. They've even named many of the animals there, which I found super adorable. The water is pumped in directly from the marina, which is better for the animals that call this aquarium home. Our son loved being able to feed all the fish and the ducks. I highly recommend supporting this aquarium during your time in Westport!!
Thanks so much for your kind words. We do love and take care of the fish as if they were our family. We are very proud of our tour guide: Alex who loves to name the fish. We think he comes up with some cleaver names.
Fantastic experience: The two people that were there today when we went were so very nice and the lady in the back was very sweet to my children telling them all about the different fish in all the tanks and even bringing over a step stool over so the girls could feed the fish. My husband even enjoyed himself when he saw the piano in the front and was allowed to play it . ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks so much for visiting the Westport Aquarium! We always enjoy the music when visitors play the piano. There is something very special about the combination of music and fish! And we think the accoustics in the aquarium are kind of fun. We are glad you enjoyed your visit. We always enjoy telling fish stories as well.
Positive experience: Very small and the tanks were very dirty and cloudy. The staff was very friendly.
Thanks for your visit. We circulate our water from the local marina 24 hours a day. Our local waters have lots of silt and plankton so they will not be as clear as tropical waters that are nutrient poor. This is a 63 year old aquarium so the tanks are older and have some scratches on the windows that you might not be used to seeing in a newer aquarium.
Fantastic experience: Outstanding! Kathryn, the owner, generously made time for my partner and I to visit during the week. We had a great time and enjoyed feeding the fish and getting to learn more about the individuals and species. They're assembling a whale skeleton which you can walk right up to! Also an amazing collection of shells and other ocean ephemera. Very affordable and fun!
Thanks so much for your visit! We are working on putting the whale rib bones on the skeleton this week. Hopefully you can make it back to climb inside the whale skeleton when it is all finished.
Fantastic experience: We had a really special visit. The kids were ecstatic to watch the fish eat. And the whale skeleton is an awesome addition.
A belated thank you for your kind words about the Westport Aquarium. We are enjoying the process of re-articulating the 39 foot Gray Whale skeleton and hope you'll come back to see the progress and see it when it is finished.
Fantastic experience: We had the most amazing adventure today! Knowing safety regulations are always changing, I wasn’t sure if we could make this happen... but I called the Westport Aquarium to see if there was any way we could visit during our stay. They said they have been doing some renovations during closure (they have been in that very same building for over 60 years) but if we didn’t mind the mess, we could come by for a private tour and help feed the animals! The aquarium itself was unique; for its size, it offered a surprising amount of things to do, see, and touch. The owners were absolutely wonderful. Kathryn was warm and knowledgeable as she lead us through each corridor. It was really special to hear her stories, you can tell she has genuine love for the science and her community. She has a connection with every single creature, and the exhibits have been created and placed with care and intention. I couldn’t be more grateful and delighted with the way they went above and beyond to host a one-of-a-kind experience for us We can’t wait to go back!
Thanks so much for your visit to the Westport Aquarium. I am so glad you enjoyed your visit. You were very kind and patient to listen to all of my stories. :) It has been a few months since we have been able to have visitors so I was quite anxious to share the aquarium once again. We hope you will come back soon and book an appointment to help us attach a whale rib bone to the 39 foot Female Gray Whale Skeleton we have been working on.
Fantastic experience: This is fun place for the whole family. You can feed the fish and ducks here which is fun for kids. It is a small aquarium but the prices are not bad. I definitely will come back.
Thanks, we look forward to your next visit.
Positive experience: Very al nutural. Not fancy or large but very well-done. They pump seawater from the harbor across the street and take great care of the marine life. They also have a lot of other cool things like microscopes, ducks and crafts. Relatively inexpensive and a good way to pass an hour. Part of a great harbor area with lots of nice shops and restaurants.
We are glad you enjoyed the aquarium. Thanks.
Fantastic experience: Always a treat for the kiddos hands on
Thanks for your visit.
Positive experience: Used to come here several times a summer as a kid. I loved it because of the seals. They no longer have seals, which made me very sad. However, the staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable on the fish they have and now you can feed the fish. A cute little aquarium. Must visit if you are in the area.
Thanks for your visit, I am glad you enjoyed feeding the fish. The seals left about 20 years ago and went to the Albuquerque New Mexico Zoo. The seals were a big part of the history of the aquarium and that era of aquariums also. We hope you will visit the Westport Aquarium again, but if you enjoy feeding the seals, we recommend Seaside Aquarium in Seaside, Oregon also.
Fantastic experience: Small but cute. The lady who was working things was just the most adorable person. The way she lit up to talk about all the fish was really what made it amazing. If only that 1898 Steinway was playable at the time. I wouldn't have hesitated to stay and play every piece I know. Lol... but the fish were fun to feed, and the ducks, and learning the stories of the skeletons. I'll definitely go again to see how that grey whale skeleton looks all put together.
Thanks so much for your visit to the aquarium, we just are limiting the amount of people playing the piano right now with the State safe start rules in place, due to the pandemic. Next time we hope you will play the piano.
Fantastic experience: Small aquarium, but a fun stop and the only aquarium I have been that they give you a bunch of cocktail shrimp so you can feed the fish as you explore. Pretty cool.
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, I am trying to make sure I reply to all comments, thanks so much for your visit and we are glad you enjoyed feeding the fish.
Fantastic experience: I love it here it's grant funded so not many fish but the ladies that work here are amazing and can answer every question
Thanks so much for your visit. Actually we are a no- profit and we operate on a much lower budget than most public aquariums, but we are not grant funded. Almost all of our funding comes from Visitor admissions. Thanks for visiting! We always love questions about the ocean and the fish and invertebrates.
Negative experience: Very few fish and hard to navigate with a wheelchair.
There will be more fish soon, we are just getting started for the season. The aquarium is a 63 year old historic building. Most of it is wheelchair accessible, the old seal pit area which is now the duck area is a bit more difficult.
Fantastic experience: This was by far one of the coolest aquariums that I have seen and been to. not only are the owners super knowledgeable and friendly, they also care about the fish and wildlife! We come to westport once a year and we will be visiting this place every time from now on! You get to feed the fish and they are very interactive! They have ducks you can feed as well! I cannot say enough great things about this aquarium! Must visit if you are in the area!!!
We are so glad you enjoyed the aquarium and our aquarium staff. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Sorry for the delay in response, I am trying to catch up on a few we missed awhile back.
Fantastic experience: Love it the staff are so awesome and friendly they love their aquarium for sure and appreciate any guests they receive!!! A must stop if you're in westport
Fantastic experience: Neat aquarium of local aquatic life! We even got to feed some of the fish and ducks (which were adorable). Cool to see the fish up close and interact with them. Had the opportunity to touch a skate fish and some creatures in a touch tank. Definitely worth the student entry fee!
Fantastic experience: Super neat place! YOU CAN FEED THE FISH! my toddlers and their older cousins(I and 11 years old) loved this aquarium. It's only a few rooms but so neat to see all the local critters!
Thanks Angelina for your nice review!
Fantastic experience: Awesome aquarium. Plenty of cool fish to see, clean grounds, and easy to navigate.
Thanks Mark for your kind words! We're glad you came!
Positive experience: A great place because of the people! VERY friendly and VERY knowledgeable! They need another attraction like an octopus or shark to get the 5th star from me, but the info from the 2 hosts was invaluable. Feeding bay shrimp to the "flatfish" Flounders provided some fun entertainment and laughs! :)
Fantastic experience: Simply the best! We go every year and it is truly the highlight of our vacation ( not to include the go cart rentals or getting our minivan stuck in sand). The folks that run Westport Aquarium are truly hospitable and patient with the kids. The place is a throwback to when learning was fun and an adventure. It's rustic, homemade, uniquely elegant and honest. I only wish they had more room for more tanks and sea life.
Thanks so much for the kind words Brett! Hope to see you again!
Fantastic experience: Quaint Historic Building. Kind, Knowledgeable Staff. Perfect for small children. Had a great time.
Thanks for the review Paul!
Fantastic experience: One of our favorite spots in Westport! Fun native fish to feed, plus a station for kiddos to paint or make art!
Thanks for the great review Charlotte!
Fantastic experience: The owners and staff are great and incredibly knowledgeable! They are truly invested in preserving this historic place. They care for the animals deeply and I have not met any family nicer than these owners. It's a purely locally owned business on the harbor
Positive experience: First time I'd been to this place since the 60s when there were still seals here. Now I get the senior discount ugh lol. The brown algae must be cleaned off the glass! I could barely see the fish. A bit of filtration would be a good thing as well. The kids working were, one was, helpful. Otherwise pretty into their phones and tablets. Gave us a few salad shrimp to feed the fish and ducks. Yup... ducks. All in all okay and the same place including the sediment and algae in the tanks.
Thanks for your comments, some days are better than others as we pull our water directly from the marina and low tides always contribute to the amount of silt we see in our tanks.
Fantastic experience: I wish they were open more often! We live to go with our kids!
Thanks for your input on our hours, each year we strive to add more hours, Westport is still a somewhat seasonal fishing town and I think that contributes to it's charm also. Be sure to remember you can call and make an appointment to see the aquarium if we are not open when you want to visit. 360--268-7070, if we don't answer cause we are taking care of the fish or talking to visitors, leave a message and we will get back to you.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely charming. I wish I could stay the entire day here. Very relaxing. Had a very informative and charming experience with the entire town and espically this cozy aquarium. The halibut are super entertaining to feed!
Thanks so much for your visit!! I hope you can make it back to Westport soon!!
Fantastic experience: This place was so neat. I love that the fish they caught locally are donated here. Cuddles was my favorite duck. Tha k you for lwtting my sons play your piano!
Thanks so much for your visit, the fish, ducks and the visitors love the music also!!!
Fantastic experience: The lady who runs this aquarium is a sweetheart. She was patient and kind to my children. They have crafts for kids to engage in. A small sandbox for kids to look for these fossils they've hidden and then they get to choose a prize. The lady taught us about some of the fish. My kids loved interacting with the fish by feeding them with provided salad shrimp. The ducks got a lunch of romaine lettuce and some shrimp too. Great small town aquarium. Don't go expecting some grand display because that is not this. Do go expecting personality and authentic people, up close viewing of fish, and a way to keep a small town attraction alive.
Thanks so much for your wonderful review, I am glad you enjoyed the tour of the aquarium.
Negative experience: Tanks were dirty and dingy. I felt sorry for the animals
I am sorry you felt the tanks were dirty. We do circulate our water 24 hours a day from the local marina and this ocean and bay area is filled with silt. We do our best to keep a healthy balance in the tanks. If you were to dive in the marina or out in the bay here you would also see lots of silt in the fishes natural habitat.
Fantastic experience: Great place to take the kids! #ducks #funday
Fantastic experience: Wonderful small aquarium. The people who work there are passionate about showing visitors all the critters and telling all about them. And you get to feed the fish and ducks!
Fantastic experience: It's the best place to learn about fish
Fantastic experience: Almost the same as I remember it from when I read a kid, though the seals have been replaced with ducks. Your admission covers entrance and shrimp/lettuce for the fish and ducks. Very friendly people running the place, they answered all our questions and made a few jokes too.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, enjoyed the explanations of the fishes, being able to feed them and have them all come up to the glass was a neat experience.
Fantastic experience: Really cool spot. Small but worth the visit. Young guy doing the tour was playing some kinda accordion type thing(melodian?) And had tons of corny jokes as well as a depth of knowledge about the sea creatures. He did a really great job!
Positive experience: A small place but the staff was really nice. They give you shrimp to feed the fish and lettuce to feed the ducks. I was a little disappointed that the place look so dirty. Was hard to see some of the fish and the duck pen needed some cleaning . But my girls loved it.
Positive experience: Kind of creepy and really small. We were only there for about 15 minutes.
Fantastic experience: Though small, the Westport Aquarium is a nice local spot to visit and support. Knowledgeable staff and friendly.
Positive experience: It's a fun place to go! It's really small though, only two rooms! But my 3 year old loved it! They give you shrimp to feed the animals, and they have a duck room!
Thanks for your visit! Westport Aquarium was built 68 years ago by Brady's family, from Brady's Oysters It is a historic aquarium from an era when most of the aquariums up and down the West Coast were built, lived in, and operated by a single family. It was a manageable size for a family to run. Now we are starting to see small seasonal aquariums built again, with the emphasis being less fish in the aquarium and more out in the wild where we really want them to thrive in their natural habitat. We do a lot of outreach work on the beaches and at schools and libraries too. I am so glad your 3 year old enjoyed it also!
Positive experience: My husband & I are celebrating his 74th birthday. Also, searching area because Grandchildren & parents will be visiting from New Jersey. We visited Westport Aquarium to be greeted by awesome workers. The woman was making craft projects to be completed by children. The man guide was friendly and knowledgeable about every sea creature dead and alive.. He knew the history of the building. He even let us know they have a hospital on site for the fish. The fee was very reasonable & covered the jigger of shrimp we received to feed the variety of creatures. If in the area again, we will go back.
Positive experience: Interesting. In serious need of help. They are trying to remodel and make it great again but the new owners need some help.
Thanks Brandon for your kind words. Sorry the response is a bit late. We just wanted to say that you are one of the few that "get it" at what we're trying to do here. Thanks again.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, they are passionate about the ocean and conservation.
Positive experience: Only open by appointment and on weekends. Looked very unique and educational inside from the window.
Positive experience: Good hearty breakfast! Low prices! Service was great too!
Fantastic experience: The Westport Aquarium is an invaluable treasure. The Myrsells do a great job of running it. The focus is on wildlife education and connecting people to the ocean. The re-articulated skeletons are amazing. And Elvis, the wolf eel, is truly the king! (PS: If the tanks appear sediment-y at times, that's because that's what the water in the harbor is like). Bring the whole family up for a great time!
Fantastic experience: Great little family run aquarium, small, but features local aquatic animals. Touch tanks and visitors can feed the fish (and ducks). Extra learning opportunities for youngsters as well.
Positive experience: It was really neat to feed all the fish even as an adult. Very informative when you ask question. I would defiantly take the time to stop here!
Positive experience: Quaint aquarium that is many years old. Fun to feed most of the fish on location. Many examples of skeletal structures of large sea creatures
Positive experience: The shrimp feeding is a nice touch that makes this small attraction memorable.
Fantastic experience: This place was a highlight of our summer for my 3 year old son and 4 year old nephew. It's very small but you get to feed the fish, eels, ducks, and skates! There is also a small touch pool with sea stars. The woman running it was so nice and informative and she even let us make and take ceramic necklaces! It's definitely worth stopping!!
Positive experience: Friendly staff. Not expensive. My 4 year old thought it great
Fantastic experience: The fishing is great, great donut shop fresh seafood all over the place people are great
Fantastic experience: This is a wonderful place to check out all the aquariums.
Positive experience: The aquarium is pretty darn small. HOWEVER, I LOVED that you get a shrimp cup and can feed pretty much all the fish, eels, and ducks! I enjoyed the touch tank too. And the employees were very cool to talk to. They had stories and knowledge that is worth hearing.
