Fantastic experience: The Salt Saver Subscription is a phenomenal subscription for the price if you utilize it. If you have a relatively large system and need RO/Salt water, it's the best deal around. I had to cancel mine, and was charged for the following month. Not a big issue, but I hadn't used it due to being away. Courtney and her team handled it promptly when I brought it up and got me settled. Admittedly, I was probably a bit annoying when trying to resolve it, but they were great. I'm unsure of the additional benefits at this time as it's been a while, but there are plenty more to the subscription. The store is nice, and always clean. The staff tend to be younger, and they are one of the most respectful and polite groups of young adults I've done business with.
Fantastic experience: This place is pretty great and bonus: their selection of aquatic plants is also great! Khang helped me out and his customer service and knowledge were A+!

Fantastic experience: I have been going to this location the past 2 years for all my Aquatic needs. This Location has Fresh water, and Saltwater varities as well as a beautiful array of Corals. This is where it's at if you Love aquascaping, and want true quality in not only the Fish but products/ Live aquatic plants. The Display tanks are breathtaking. Truly its own type of Art. The Owner is very personable. It is just such a relaxing Kid Friendly atmosphere.

Fantastic experience: I really like the nice young men and women who work at Picasso. I started my small reef tank 15 years ago when they had their beautiful store in the middle of town. The prices have gone up and it's no longer a beautiful place to visit just for the fun of it. The show room is just a few tanks instead of dozens. I will still shop with them for special corals because they have the biggest selection anywhere.

Positive experience: Beautiful store/tank set ups, fish are well displayed, plants look amazing. The staff seems pretty knowledgable and they are happy to engage customers. Our first time in the store, we bought over $200 in schooling fish- mostly tetras. Several died the next day (over half). Of course we were informed on the store policies, etc. after the fact. That’s our fault for contacting them one day past their store policy. No hard feelings… but for their comparatively higher prices on most fish, and they’re obviously going for a “high end” theme… it just feels a little of a let down that they couldn’t replace 8 tetras because we didn’t call them a day earlier. We don’t typically lose fish, so we were watching the tank and assessing the situation… waiting to see how many would die. The tank is a 55gal long, that already had a well established community of similar fish. The remaining 4 of the original 12 we bought are still doing fine, and I’ve been back and purchased plants that are still doing good… but basically $20-$30 in tetras kinda feels like they could have done us a solid, in exchange for the years and $$$$ in business we’re happy to do, going forward.

Negative experience: First time I went there I was excited thought I had found the right place to help me start a small saltwater tank. Terribly mistaken. All downhill from there. Thousand dollars later realized their professionalism and their word is not reliable. Gave many opportunities to redeem. Drove 35 miles each way several times to get something they told me over the phone they had and get there to find they were mistaken. Paid in advance for a couple common fish an after almost 2 months just got my money back and am moving on. Very disappointed

Fantastic experience: I love Picasso! They always carry a variety of fish, coral and inverts. It's so fun going into their store and their owners, Courtney and Clint, are so nice and knowledgeable. I have learned so much about aquarium care from them. They have a really cool Saltwater Saver plan to join. Courtney has gone above and beyond with helping me with a few issues I've had with learning the hobby. My whole family loves trips to Picasso!

Fantastic experience: Clint, Courtney, Kris, and the entire team have been amazing. They brought our tank and love for it back after another company had somewhat neglected it for over a year. They even made extra trips to the house to ensure that our tank was ready to welcome our new zebra eel and lionfish just in time for my daughters 10th birthday. On top of their awesome tank maintenance service, the store itself is clean, organized, and you can tell that you're getting quality product and fish from them. After stopping in there and being treated as well as we have, we have no desire to go to any other fish store.

Fantastic experience: I've had great experiences here. The staff is very knowledgeable, polite, and helpful. They got me started with axolotls for my kids, who are really loving them. They have a great monthly subscription for tank water, which is a life saver because the tap water in this area has ammonia. They also have really unique woods, rocks, and plants for aquariums that I haven't found anywhere else. Plus it's neat to see all the salt water fish, snails, and coral they have on display.

Fantastic experience: This past Friday I visited the store for the first time and was blown away with the amazing service! Khang helped me pick out my first pair of clownfish for my tank along with a watchman goby for a tank mate. He took the time to go over what they were currently feeding their fish to make their transition to their new home as smooth as possible. Being new to the hobby he and another employee, Michael went over different corals to add to my tank and how to properly care and maintain them. Bonus is the fact that they had some of the biggest and healthiest cardinal tetras for my freshwater tank that I’ve ever seen locally so had to add to my school. Safe to say that all the fish that came home with me acclimated and were eating and thriving within ours of being in their new homes and could not be more happy that I stopped in to the store and it will not be the last! Khang and Michael did an outstanding job because they care and would recommend anyone to stop in because the store is going to do nothing but grow because of employees like them :-)

Negative experience: This place appears nice when you walk in. The frag tank had algae floating on top of it. The hair algae was so thick. They are way over priced. They had a long nose hawk fish priced at $107 that was maybe 2 inches long. It's sad when you can get something cheaper on live aquaria..
Hello Chelsey, we are a small business and your review is not exactly fair. We work long hours to try and have one of the cleanest stores in town. Yes, liveaquaria does have that fish listed at $79.99. It is not currently available for sale, those prices change. If it was available it would not ship for free unless you spent over $229. I had the fish available, you could see it and check to see if it’s eating with a 48 hr warranty.
Fantastic experience: Clint and his team are professional and do an tremendous job. The aquariums they design are amazing for house or a business. I would recommend them to anyone thinking about making this improvement.

Negative experience: Expensive, expensive, expensive. Shop around. This fish store is for them Johnson County Kansas folks who don't care to look at a price tag. It's a nice store, but the price tag on most items and fish/plants scared me away and I probably won't return.
Fantastic experience: The new location for Picasso takes this place to a whole new level. The setup of display tanks and selection of freshwater fish, freshwater plants, saltwater fish and coral is excellent. The staff is also well versed in the place and in helping the customer. I have kept fish for 20 years and the unique selection of freshwater fish is unlike any other in the vicinity.

Negative experience: Stay away from this place. They are the most dishonest and immoral people out there. Serviced tank with no CO2, no real knowledge of fish. And totally nasty individuals running it.

Fantastic experience: Every time I go to Picasso they are nothing but extremely helpful and polite! The store is very clean unlike most fish stores as well. They sell quality products at fair prices. Definitely one of my favorite stores around the area.

Fantastic experience: I love this store and am very glad that they moved to the Kansas side of KC where I am located! They have a great selection of freshwater plants and fish, many beautiful saltwater fish, and some truly mesmerizing anemones all at a reasonable price. I've been in a few times to get new plants for my first tank and will definitely be coming back for fish friends!

Fantastic experience: Really neat place to check out if you are an aquarium hobbiest. I only have freshwater so that's all I really paid attention to, but their selection of aquarium plants is what I like best. It's a decent selection of ludwigias, repens, a few anubias' and ferns, and others, along with a lot of tissue culture plants. They all look good quality and healthy (though they have a bit of algae, but that's too be expected when the lights are on all day for business) and I like that I don't have to worry about them dying in shipping like of I had bought them online. Not sure on the tissue culture plants but the stemmed plants were all a decent price for a good number of stems and there's even a buy three get one free deal. The freshwater fish looked healthy and there was an especially good selection of beautiful healthy Bettas. There neocaridina shrimp were pretty large and vibrant as well, and a bit less then I've seen in some shops. They've got axolotls too! Plenty of juveniles with good coloring and looked pretty healthy. Even if you aren't into the hobby it's worth coming in just to look at the beautiful freshwater setups. Update 9/2/23: Made another visit after them moving locations to get some live plants and check out the new place. I think it's still a work in progress moving stuff between the locations and setting up so it's definitely not as full of fish and shrimp like last time, but I won't really judge that since they're still settling. I did see some great looking goldfish and Bettas, and the live plants still looked great with no algae at all so I decided to go ahead and get some. The employee helping me was very nice but I was less than thrilled to find so many of the stems of my lugwigia broken and leaves fallen off after some rough handling and bagging. The plants were grabbed by the stems to try and lift the pots out of the crate holding them in the tank then shooken quite a bit. I bought the plants because they looked beautiful and I wouldn't have to worry about damage during shipping only for them to be damaged when bagged! I'd still love to buy my plants here in the future but please be a little gentler!

Fantastic experience: Dylan came out for an for an emergency repair of a leaking bulk head in our 200 gallon marine tank. He was amazing and came with urgency! The competition can’t touch these guys !!

Negative experience: Wow we were in the store for 25 minutes with no help. 3 people were trying to wrangle one fish from a big tank and q barely said hi when we walked in. After 10 minutes of no interaction I asked for help. They said they would be right with us. 15 minutes later still no one. We left very disappointed. Won’t be back.

Fantastic experience: Picasso is a must-visit for all fish enthusiasts! The store is up-scale and carries both fresh and saltwater fish. The store also has axolotls from baby to full-grown. It’s Kansas City’s best aquarium around until the zoo’s aquarium opens.
Negative experience: Store looks nice from the outside.. I’ve tried to go in twice now, both time they were closed with no online notices. I wouldn’t care that much if I hadn’t driven nearly 40 minutes both times from my aunts house. I’m visiting from Nebraska and wanted to visit some local fish stores. The first time, on Tuesday they had a sign saying they were closed just for that day. So I came back on Thursday, only to find a new sign saying they are only open on the weekend. Again I wouldn’t care if my drive wasn’t so long.. please update your hours online if you’re going to extend your closure more than a day or two.. thx :)
Hey Michael, Our hours are posted online and we are always closed Tuesdays. We are desperately trying to grow our team and we do not have enough to run the store right now, the sign today relayed that. The employee who was scheduled was unable to make it in today last minute, our hands were tied. We will be open this weekend, we share your disappointment. Unfortunately, reviews like this are even more detrimental to us as a small local business.
Negative experience: Highly disappointed considering the website. I have never seen as many sickly, belly sunken in fish in a "high end" store before. Aiptasia was everywhere, fish clearly had ich, and suspected several have flukes. Corals were nothing special and hard to see considering they're housed in a hot tub. Aiptasia was all over in the coral tank as well. The sad quality of the fish being sold will ensure that I will never return.
Kimberly, There is a single purple tang in our care that is sick. We are aware and wouldn’t recommend anyone purchase him at this time. It is heartbreaking but when you care for animals, sometimes they get sick. We are curious what tanks you are referring to that have the aiptasia you see. We have aiptasia eating file fish in our coral and frag units. If you are seriously concerned with the animals in our care, we’d love to speak with you directly.
Negative experience: Store said it was open at 12, when I got there it was closed at 12:05. Wasted my time and drive
After reviewing our time-clock and video footage. It appears the store was open on time on 1/8/2023. There was an employee who had a medical situation on 1/7 and the store did open late.
Fantastic experience: My favorite high tech fish store in kansas :) love my ada 60p. I’ve always done a low tech set up as I didn’t understand how to inject co2. Thank you Johnny for helping me learn to use the regulator I’m having alot of fun with this new toy for my aquascaping

Negative experience: I went in to visit today and why I saw I was pretty sad to see… Axolotls should not have direct light on them, & if they do they need to have A LOT of hiding places. Why? Because they don’t have Eyelids. Picasso Aquatics Do better. Oh and not to mention completely over priced Axolotls. I have a golden albino and it was $80.
Negative experience: This place has absolutely the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced seriously and after reading other reviews I guess I’m not the first and won’t be the last sadly. It was my first time walking in after I called to see if any Koi fish were available I asked 2 employees while they were busy talking to each other and didn’t bother to greet me first of all then I let them know I called about koi fish and where are they located in the store they just pointed over there in that corner ! Honestly I was so disappointed with their body language and response I walked out ! The owner needs to clean house and hire people that put customers first !

Positive experience: I have called this store twice and e-mailed the manager once over a period of a month. Not one return call or e-mail. This has eliminated this store from any potential future business from me or my parents. Edit: 6/9/2022 Clint reached out to me and cleared up some things. He has made considerable effort to rectify the issues that I have had. Although I have already made other arrangements, the effort goes a long way. Fantastic experience: Hands down best aquascaping/plant tank store I have seen. The display tanks are created by their freshwater manager and are all for sale. Prices for freshwater plants and livestock are reasonable. Lots of freshwater expertise, clearly! They do take their time with each customer. That means you do have to wait sometimes, but also that when you are talking to them, they will answer all of your questions and give you loads of information.

Fantastic experience: We visited Picasso Aquatics for the first time today and have definitely found our new go-to local fish/aquarium store! We are new to the hobby and have been to about 4 other aquarium specialty stores in the KC area just trying to learn more and figure out what we wanted to start with for our 75 gal fresh water aquarium. Several of those other stores seemed to be annoyed by our questions or didn’t really give much information. Dan at Picasso was by far the most helpful, patient, and knowledgeable professional we have spoken to so far. He took time to answer all of our questions, gave our 4 yr old a tour of the store, and just made the experience overall amazing! We will definitely be getting our fish from here in the future!

Fantastic experience: Best store in town for aquascaping, no one in town even comes close, to carrying high tech equipment like ADA, which no else in hundreds of miles has, to the plant selection and soil and hardscape etc. Some things ya are priced higher than most stores but its understandable, the knowledge and talent picasso has is worth the extra money. And to top it off they have one of the best aquascaper in the country working for them, Johnny / JJ Aquariums. His scapes in the store are the best you'll ever see in person! If your looking to bring this hobby to the next level this is your place.

Negative experience: If you want attentive customer service, let alone staff that will acknowledge your existence you can forget it. If you are looking to buy a tank their stock has been sitting for a few years so the manufacturer’s warranty at this point is void. Personally, I would not purchase livestock from here. The tanks aren’t exactly maintained well. Prices are on the high end. They also offer at home services/maintenance but based on the way their tanks look in the store I wouldn’t waste my time or money. There’s better out there. Do your research, they are not the only gig in town to provide aquarium care in your home. I won’t name drop because that’s unfair but I will say the two additional competitors/places I have been to were lower in price, their livestock was in much healthier condition, and if you order a tank it will be new from the manufacturer (new tanks have a 1 year warranty). Beware if you purchase a tank from Picasso ask how old it is and check with the manufacturer on their warranty. Would you rely on a warranty from a store with a 3.8 star review? Hopefully their house call team is better than what is offered in store.

Not only do purchases include the manufacturers warranty but we also provide additional warranties on all our aquarium purchases.
We provide maintenance services for over 700,000 gallons a year across the KC metro area and over 6 states. Our maintenance team has 25+ years experience and we happily provide consistent service. We recommend doing research on who services local aquariums and what they provide in comparison as well.

Fantastic experience: Started back in the saltwater aquarium hobby about a year ago and have been extremely pleased with the service from Picasso. I visit the store routinely to get ideas and ask questions about the hobby. I have found their pricing to be in line with the industry and they have a fair return policy. I recommend using their water service and if you have the budget signup for the monthly maintenance.

Fantastic experience: Always a great place to visit. Exotic aquatics aren't cheap no matter how you shake it, but Picasso has a great selection and the staff doesn't hassle you to buy something. A pleasant experience all around, although the parking situation could be better.

Fantastic experience: Store is top notch for scaping high end tropical tanks. Justin has incredible knowledge on plants/aquascaping. They are the only store the carries ADA products. They are stocked with cultures weekly. New fish come frequently, and can usually order anything your looking for. Saltwater is also the best in the for selection.

Fantastic experience: Had an awesome experience at Picasso exotic aquatics yesterday! I have been trying to source an ADA 60p and they had several in stock! Johnny was extremely helpful in answering questions and very knowledgeable about high-end aquascaping. They are a one stop shop for all your Aquascaping needs! I would say this is my new favorite Aquascaping store! Will definitely be coming back soon!

Negative experience: I remember coming here a few years back an this place was gorgeous. But I came in today and most of the tanks are covered in algae and have injured, sick fish. No one reached out to help me, and the selection was sparse. I hope it picks back up again.

Negative experience: I spent 3k with this store. They sold me a faulty canister filter. The 1st week of them setting it up, the motor stopped working. They had to come out to fix it. It broke again, and they said they would order me a new one. I haven't heard back from them. When I go into the store to talk about the issue, it's like the manager is conveniently not available I just want a working canister filter. after spending all this money with them. If this issue isn't resolved I will be reporting them to the BBB.

Fantastic experience: Really nice fish place. They seem to specialize in more salt water then fresh water fish. They did have some beautiful bettas as well.

Negative experience: My partner and I were in to get a new snail and shrimp for our tanks at home and were incorrectly charged $600. We did not receive a receipt upon checkout and didn’t realize we were incorrectly charged until after when going through our bank statement. When we called to report the issue to the store, they tried to blame another customer that was at the store at the same time as we were. They tried to make it seem like our card was compromised even though we never lost possession of the card. We reported the charge to our bank and at their request, we also filed a police report. The store gave me information from they felt somehow used our card, which I don’t personally think is right. After reporting to both the bank and the police, both parties agreed this error was made by the employee at the store. Since then, my partner and I have tried to contact the manager and owner of the store. Each time receiving poor excuses, communication, and honestly and general disinterest for our situation. They haven’t seemed to be apologetic of the situation, claim any responsibly, or have any sympathy for the fact they have wrongly charged my card. It has been WEEKS without ever hearing from them and have to constantly follow up ourselves. Due to their seemingly struggle of idea of being out $600 for their mistake, they offered us “a mutually beneficial solution” which I assumed means offering us more fish products WHICH WE DON’T NEED. I feel like we have been beyond patient and understanding of the situation and completed each requested step of this ghastly situation without ever feeling the the store cared that this happened in their store. After my last interaction with an employee, I was told the delay was coming from a meeting the store was having with the police and our bank. We've been in touch with the officer we reported the incident to them and asked if they had heard from the store or were waiting on anything from us. The officer assured us they had determined the fault was with the store and even offered to stop by the store to follow up on our behalf. I typically don’t post negative reviews, but I feel as though maybe if others were to see how they treated us in this situation, the store might be more apt to contact us in regards to the wrongful charge. ETA: After posting this review the store emailed my husband and I that day to show they were refunding us the money.

Any delay was to verify that no criminal activity had occurred, we were doing everything in our power to navigate through this as quickly as possible. Negative experience: I was excited to visit on my last trip, now that my tank was ready for corals, but I left empty-handed because every tank was super dirty and filled with aiptasia. I didn't want to take any chances bringing any pests into my new tank. Fortunately there are several other stores in the area.
Fantastic experience: Really healthy betta fish. Cheaper and higher quality than the chain pet stores. The best plants for aquariums I've seen at any pet store. Highly recommend.

Negative experience: Walked around for about 20 minutes on Sunday without one employee asking if i need help. Even when I finally caught one of them he turned away like he was so busy and started messing with a tank when there was no one else in th he store. Then once another worker finally popped up i tried to get some help with fish. He wouldn't sell me none of the fish i wanted because he didnt know how much they were. So i drove 1 hour and 20 minutes to get turned away because the worker didnt know their own prices because most of them are not wrote on the tanks. The old workers were really nice that use to work there.

Negative experience: Adequate service until you actually purchase an aquarium. Buyer beware, unless you enjoy spending thousands of dollars on an aquarium and then get poor treatment once it’s all set up. Very disorganized follow through with scheduling. Whoever is in charge of customer relations needs an evaluation.
Fantastic experience: Picasso is a very solid aquarium shop in the greater KC area, if your into high end tanks reef or freshwater they have you covered. The livestock looked extremely healthy and they had a great selection of plants, corals and accessories. I live an hour away from them and will continue to do business with this shop, it’s worth the drive. Johnny was extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable in answering all my questions. Check these guys out you won’t regret it.

Negative experience: Overpriced and poor service. I came in and wasn't greeted by the two employees on Sat 4/3/21. I was the only person in the store and browsed for a bit before going towards the lights I was shopping for. The prices are downright ridiculous for some of the corals being sold. I was looking to upgrade my existing lighting and asked the pair of workers who were standing together by the sales counter if there was much of a difference in their opinion between what I have currently and the newer version of the light. One responded and said, "Well this one is going to be better", and walked away. The other employee went back to what he was doing. Guess the $850 I was spending wasn't going to be at Picasso.

Fantastic experience: I’ve seen some mixed reviews about this place so I was hesitant but I’m glad I stopped by! The staff was friendly and knew their stuff I could ask numerous questions and receive accurate answers. Was helped to understand the importance of certain steps and how it is beneficial in the long run for the health of your tank. I will be returning and doing business with them. Yes some things here are over priced compared to others but for some things I’ll pay for my experience and relationships built with a shop
