Since 2007 Reef eScape has been an aquarium design, installation and service company. With our goal of providing the best aquarium solutions, healthiest animals, and helpful staff, starting in 2014 we opened the aquarium showroom to retail sales as well. Growth in both Service and Retail areas has been great and in 2018 we nearly doubled our space, working to expand our livestock selection (saltwater fish, coral, inverts, freshwater fish and plants) as well as dry goods offerings: filtration, lighting, fish foods, etc etc. Fair, internet competitive prices at unmatched service. Fantastic experience: I love the stupid reviews "I drove an hour to support a small business but the store was small" You drove an hour because how many specialty reef shops are there that sell everything in the ocean? This one is worth a Southwest flight. This shop is amazing and every visit I walk away thinking WOW! where has this place been all my life. LOVE Reef eScape!!!

Fantastic experience: The staff is extremely friendly and always willing to help, offer advice, or just chit chat. I get my fish exclusively from here because of their quarantine practices. They will even special order fish for you if you want something they do t currently have in stock. I highly recommend Reed escape.

Negative experience: Reef Escape used to be the best in town. But they’ve had a lot of changes in management. Don’t seem to order new fish and have a big focus on maintenance and service for the local market. I hope they get back to their roots and focus on retail

Thank you for the feedback Dean. You are correct in a few cases. There has been some turnover with staff, but I feel very good about the team we have now and I think all the permanent changes are for the best for everyone involved (Customers, Staff, Mgmt. and Reef eScape). Lee our retail manager, unfortunately had a very seriously medical emergency that required extended hospitalization and time off. We miss him very much, and his absence has created challenges I wish we could have managed better but we expect him back soon.

You are also correct about the recent lack of available fish. In addition to the challenges with completing our expansion into our new larger space and the relocation of our QT process, we recently had a few concerning cases and out of an abundance of precaution we shut down 2 of our systems causing a serious disruption of flow through our quarantine process. Things are back on track now, and availability should resume.

One thing you are wrong about is our history. Out "roots" are actually in aquarium design, installation and maintenance. Reef eScape has been successful in this area for nearly 20 years and only opened our doors to retail customers about 10 years ago. While the retail side of what we do continues to grow, the service business is still more than half of our work. 10 years ago we were only open to walk in customers for 6 hours 3 days a week, and had 1/5 the space and even less capacity for fish, coral and inverts compared to the space we move into in September 2023.

Again, I truly appreciate your feedback as it gave me the opportunity to explain some things we clearly didn't communicate well when you were in the store last. We look forward to your next visit and the opportunity to re-earn your appreciation.

Fantastic experience: Love this place! This is my go to aquarium store everybody is so friendly and helpful, i started my first saltwater tank, and they're walking me through important steps and helping me the whole way, love this place Jae is super helpful and thorough! Definitely one of the best places in nova and my favorite store!

Fantastic experience: Cannot recommend Reef escape enough! I have a 40 gallon Mantis shrimp tank and have been setting up a 75 gallon mixed reef tank and neither would be possible without the advice of this shop. Jameson and Jay have been unbelievable. They have made countless recommendations over the months, but I never feel pressured to buy things (but boy have I been happy with my many many purchases). For new reefers Jameson and Jay have shown genuine compassion and have taken time to answer questions and hear out my concerns. I recommend this shop to everyone! While at the shop tonight I picked a goby and pistol shrimp pair and after feedback from Jameson I trusted him enough to pick my pair and ended having them pair in the tank that same night! So happy! Jameson ya rock! Looking forward to buying coral from them soon!

Fantastic experience: I went shopping for corals today with my son at Reef eScape. Jae was the gentlemen who helped us and answered all our questions. He was professional and very knowledgeable, even giving us detailed tips and what to expect as new coral keepers. Jae was also great interacting with my boy :). Fantastic experience: We've been going to this store for a while now, and it's awesome. They have a variety of stock and usually always have something different or interesting with each resupply. We've mostly worked with Jae and Jam, both of whom are truly awesome. They will take a lot of time walking you through each coral option, give you advice on lighting and flow, and make recommendations. I highly recommend this as your go-to saltwater store.

Fantastic experience: Amazing Place! I've been going here for many years. Fish are all quarantined and healthy which is a relief for us, who have dealt marine ich and velvet in the past. Coral selection is great as well! There's no better place than to buy coral and fish than here!

I am sorry you didn't have a great experience, but thank you for the feedback Ashton. I do not know when you visited or how many times you have been here. It is true that our inventory of fish can be low at times. I am not sure if you heard when you were here but we run a 14+ day Quarantine, so unlike other stores that receive fish on Friday to sell over the weekend, we are always 2 weeks behind. SO, despite our recent expansion of both our QT process and our healthy fish systems demand is still greater than we can supply. The good news is we are continuing the expansion of our QT systems and that process is nearly complete so we hope to get closer to meeting our heavy demand in the near future.

Fantastic experience: Occasionally specialty stores can be staffed with experts that seem to enjoy making customers feel stupid. Not here! These guys will patiently answer questions and set you on the path to success. I’ve always wanted a peacock mantis shrimp, but was intimidated… look them up, seriously, if they grew to 50lbs I’d never go in the ocean again. I was browsing the little tanks and they had one. Jay took an easy half hour with me, explained everything I needed to know about my mantis and packed me up with some stuff to make the new arrival happy in her new home; you know you’re in the right place when the staff is sad to see the inventory go. I’ve been to the store 4 times since finding it a few months ago, it’s clean, beautiful and smells like the ocean, the fish and corals look healthy and happy. If you’re thinking of getting into saltwater aquariums or you’re an experienced hobbyist this store is for you.

Fantastic experience: The team at Reef Escape is amazing! When I arrived I was greeted by multiple employees asking if I needed assistance and once I let them know I was just looking around they let me do my own thing without following me around or information overloading me. Once I needed assistance they were knowledgeable and helped me pick out the first corals for my tank! Definitely recommend this store!

Negative experience: I called the store to inquire about a posting they had on Facebook for fish equipment for curbside pick up. I was told the last item was picked up already but asked if I could hold will the store rep checked to see if they had anything else. I waited on the phone for 20 minutes and ended up arriving at the store before they ever came to the phone. Once I got in the store, I mentioned I had been on hold waiting for someone to come back and three separate employees all looked at me like I was stupid & acted like they had no clue what I was talking about. It was terrible custom service and I will never visit this store again.

Fantastic experience: I love this place. We’ve been to several other “reef” stores in most areas of NoVA/DMV as we started our new found salt water aquarium hobby, but all have failed in comparison. P.G., Jae, Lee and everyone else are so helpful in not just general service, but also passing on their knowledge to provide you with most enjoyable reefing experience. Please be patient, the quarantine is essential and won’t be regretted like with other stores of just buy whatever and if it dies, too bad…

Positive experience: I have shopped here more than once. I have gotten fish, corals and hermit crabs. I like the staff here. When you ask them a question they take the time to answer. There is a decent selection of corals and some cool display tanks. I think prices are within expected ranges but could use discounts every now and then. Loyalty program would be a nice addition for repeat customers like me.

Fantastic experience: Reef Escape is my go to reef shop. Andrew, PG, and Jay (and the entire staff) are very knowledgeable and patient. I knew nothing about the hobby and they have guided me through the whole process and answered my millions of questions! They take care of their customers and look out for making my reefing experience the best it can be without trying to upsell me on everything. Positive experience: One of my favorite saltwater stores I have visited. Everyone their knowledge of fish is great. My first visit I learned so much information about starting a saltwater tank. I brought a lot of dry rock and salt. They have tons of live rock as well. Store was clean and everyone was friendly. They also quarantine every fish before sold. My only con is when I go back most of the fish are sold already it breaks my heart. Wish they would post online what’s the current stock so I can call in and pay a holding fee. Other then that the shop is great.

Thanks for the positive review and great feedback. You are 100% correct! We currently have more demand than we can supply with our current QT process. We are working hard to expand our capability and increase the number of fish we can get in and thru the process to try to fill that demand. We hope to move into a larger space here in the same building soon. We do not take "holding fees" but you can put a deposit on a fish that is still in QT and then come back for them when they clear. You can also give us a "wish list" and we will let you know when animals you are interested come into the store. I hope this helps. Thanks again for the review and feedback.

Fantastic experience: Very solid store. The quarantine tanks are kind of an amazing thing to see (although I was slightly upset that one of the fish I was super excited to find wasn’t available to actually purchase that day. I live pretty far away, so it’s not really a thing to put something on hold). However, that said, the selection is awesome and since they will order whatever you need AND quarantine it for you, that can’t be beat.

Thanks for the kind words and positive review. Just to clarify, the fish in QT1 are what we would call "not yet ready to go home." We strongly suggest keeping them here (yes putting them on hold is an option) but you may and some of our customers do take them home before they finish the full QT cycle. This is of course up to each unique situation. For example: A fish that is on day 12 of a 14 day QT here is in much better shape than a fish that has more or less just come from the wild and is still stressed from being shipped in yesterday. Another possibility is when an advanced hobbyist/ customer plans to finish the QT themselves. Send me an email about that missing fish, what happened? Fantastic experience: Absolutely love this place! I’m a reefer and I only get my fish here because they quarantine everything no exceptions. PG and Dave are always knowledgeable and very helpful! The store is clean, organized and dog friendly. If you want quality Go See for yourself. Location is a bit of a challenge but worth it. It’s located in the back of the strip mall.

Positive experience: Sorry this is a long review. I recently joined the hobby a few months ago and did a lot of research on local fish stores. I found Reef eScape through a video from someone who recommended them as one of the best in the Northern VA area. I initially went in to get information about a saltwater aquarium and quickly realized I needed to start with freshwater. I will get a managed saltwater aquarium at some point but want to learn more in case I need to do something myself. After talking to Noah for an extensive period of time, I made the decision to push the button. With Noah’s tireless help day and night (and I mean day & night), I finally have my aquarium up and running. Noah’s commitment to not only the hobby but his passion for marine biology is evident in how he interacts with his customers. Do you know anyone who will respond to an email or call after hours? Well, Noah would and it was well known by the other employees. I actually now have a planted aquarium as well due to conversations with Noah, Jae and Jonny. Although Reef eScape currently has a small selection of freshwater fish, they are the ONLY freshwater fish store that truly quarantines all their fish (saltwater and freshwater). I tirelessly researched which fish I wanted once my tank was fully cycled after 6 weeks. While I was in the store; Dave, Jonny, Jae and Noah collaborated on what I wanted to order and discussed which fish would work and which would not work. I was truly excited that after 2 months of waiting, testing and waiting again I would finally have my fish. Unfortunately, only one of the fish selections was ordered so I ended up with fish I didn’t necessarily want but was willing to take home. Even though I wasn’t expecting the other fish, they have been fun to observe and I love them the same. I even bought guppies that I didn’t want but only purchased because they were an unexpected unique new addition to the store. Thank you Jae!!! Sadly I just found out Noah is no longer working for Reef eScape. My heart truly hurts that he’s no longer there because it’s hard to find someone who’s willing to go above and beyond to genuinely help a customer. Noah was a great asset to Reef eScape and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. I know he’s going to do well where ever he is.

Negative experience: Nightmares under the Sea. Imagination is what reef aquarium are made of and surly any avid reefer is excited when they go to a reef shop. Reef Escape for sure is the exception. Be sure to ask for Dave the Maintenance manager when u go. This guy is for sure no pearl of the sea, more like a clam this guy stinks! From start to finish a true example of how the drive a Buisness straight into the ground. From the degrading way he treats his employees whom will gladly talk negatively of him when he’s not in the store to the disgraceful way he speaks to customers and cherry picks Buisness. It gets better when you enter the shop. The set up here screams soon to be out of Buisness from there poorly set up display tanks with sick fish which they claimed have been quarantined to the laughable coral display they have if you can even call it that. No dought this is a service shop which has forgotten the key word in there Buisness model SERVICE. Do you self a favor and go to Blue Ribbon Koi or any other shop in the DMV. I am the owner and it is my policy that we do not fill 5 gallon buckets with water. This is a safety and liability policy intended to protect you and other drivers around you. The fact that one (new) employee bent that policy for you in the past is disappointing to me.

Clearly that bucket problem was the issue you had today and everything else you wrote here is just meant to be hurtful. I'm sorry you are upset, but it doesn't forgive your behavior. My staff are people and don't deserve to be treated that way. Staffing is tough right now and everyone is over worked. You are right about one thing... we do have plans to close the doors you walked in today to retail customers. BUT please don't come back even after we move into our new expansion space. (You did give us a good LOL on the going out of business comment.)

Negative experience: I drove nearly an hour to get to this store. It looked like a great spot thanks to the good reviews. When I pulled up, I though it was a bit odd that the store was around the corner in the back of the building, but I wanted to give it a shot and try to support small business. I was in the store more than 30 minutes, and not one person acknowledged me or my partner. Not even a “Hello”. Sometimes they looked up at me then turned away. I needed some help as I’m getting started with my new reef tank and wanted to spend a lot of money on it over the next few months. Oh well. The store is very small. Not a lot of fish in stock. The fish that were in the front looked good, the ones for sale in the back looked miserable. The equipment looked old and dusty and not a very wide selection. I honestly don’t know how this place has good reviews, though perhaps other types of people get better service here if you know what I mean. I left disappointed, and drove to a different store that had better selection of coral and fish, a welcoming atmosphere, and some actual customer service.

Fantastic experience: Always adored the ocean, this is my first time jumping into this hobby when I discovered this store and have been successful with Dave and his team. I come here regularly and follow the advice and my reef has been doing well - positive growth (soft/LPS/SPS) and I don’t struggle with maintaining the tank. I have made the majority of my purchases here and will continue to do so (equipment/livestock/food). When I come by, there are usually 2 young guys and they have always been very helpful.

Fantastic experience: It’s in the back! Just visited here and it was great. They do 3+ week quarantine on fish and coral plus they source sustainably from breeders. Their coral selection was great with a ton of varieties and different grades of quality and size. Offered excellent advice on how to properly cycle my tank as well as correct some of the misconceptions I had. Will be buying most of my fish from here.

Negative experience: I drove 30 minutes to get here. I’m always looking for ways to support small businesses, and I had wanted to try this shop out. I was there probably 20 minutes, and out of around 6 employees in the store, not one person acknowledged me. Looked at me then turned away. I needed some help and I was going to purchase something. Oh well. The store is very small. Not a lot of fish in stock. There were a couple of display aquariums in the front that looked decent, but in the back the tanks were in poor shape. And with all the people working there, you’d think they could remove the dead fish. Also there’s a tank in the front that’s overrun with guppies. The tank was dark and miserable. I know they breed profusely, but if you’re going to keep them, then provide proper care and manage them. I honestly don’t know how this place got good reviews. I went up the road to a different store where I at least got decent customer service.

Not sure when this was, but if it was this week, we are VERY short staffed in the retail store, (now hiring and there are 2 people out on vacation) and the most we ever have recently is 4 people working on a Saturday. Fantastic experience: My wife and I were thinking of going from a cheap, small Petsmart aquarium to a larger one that would look nice in our new home. Dave took the time to walk us through all the considerations, from whether we’d need to further support our floors to how we could best keep out our cats. All in all, he took over an hour discussing all our questions, running estimates for different setups, and giving us a ton of practical advice about how to get our new tank started. Truly excellent and expert customer service. Some of the very best we’ve had with any purchase ever. We will definitely be back.

Fantastic experience: Amazing store! Dave and James are extremely knowledgeable and give you practical advise. I have such confidence in their QT process that I do not buy fish from anyone else. They recently had to keep a large batch of fish in quarantine for several months which likely cost the store a significant chunk of change. Reef escape did the right thing holding the fish, and keeping up with their QT until a qualified Marine biologist cleared the QT. Its this commitment to its customers that gives me confidence in their business, and why I will go out of my way to buy products at this store rather than online even if it costs me a few extra dollars. Looking forward to the huge expansion, cant wait to see how the 1000 gallon show tank turns out!

Negative experience: Our two tetras died within a month. Not really sure why we did everything according to recommendations from this shop. From the brand food heater and everything to the chemicals were from here and the care instructions.

Fantastic experience: I have shopped here a couple times over the past years and always have had a good experience. They quarantine their fish so you have a healthy specimen that comes with you. I’ve purchase typically “shy” fish from them but you can tell the fish are healthy right away because the swim up to the glass asking for food. I brought home a new fish about a week ago; he is doing great and eating like a pig. Ollie always gives great advice and insight. They are doing appointments only right now which I appreciate in such a small space. The deposit you pay goes towards your purchase which in the reefing word you know you’re typically going to spend more than that deposit anyway.

Negative experience: The store is currently only allowing visits by appointment only, (fine whatever), then I'm told there is a 30$ non refundable appointment fee to just walk into the store to look. (LOL) when I drove to the store I noticed a No Concealed Carry sign, which in Virginia does not carry the weight of the law with it however, was all I needed to know. I took my 2600$ elsewhere and am happy with my results.

We are sorry you feel that way. The overwhelming response is that people appreciate the fee to come in which is actually applied towards your purchase. Safety for everyone - retail customers, our staff, our service clientele, and everyone's family - is our priority and the fees allow us to social distance while customers are in the shop since we only allow one group of up to two in at a time. Again, the fee is applied to purchases.

We are also a no weapons store because of the past conduct of a customer who had a holstered gun that he kept on showing us when he heard something he did not like. In Virginia, no weapons policies carry the same weight as they do elsewhere and again, safety is our priority.

Fantastic experience: Very Knowledgeable I had a Mandarin that was not eating they was quick to recommend a pellet food and explained how to feed it. Went home and the Mandarin starting eating the food right away and is doing much better. I also had a few reefing questions and they was very helpful answering all my questions. I really like the fact they quarantine and treat their fish before they sell them (worth every penny not having to do that myself). I will be stocking my new 180 build with fish from here.

Fantastic experience: Oh, what a nice variety of clean and healthy fish and corals. Staff was helpful. Prices are more of the high end but very understandably considering everything is clean and taken care of. Very good condition. There is no other place to buy The fish they have in stock around here. I think Ollie- or ellio (spelling*) was the person that helped us put everything together. Our first time here and not our last. Thank you! Very happy we found this place.

Fantastic experience: Went there to get some fresh water plants. Even though they are focused on salt water tanks, staff was super nice and knowledgeable on fresh water aquariums. Prices were also more affordable compared to the other places and chains. Definitely would suggest to anyone in the hobby.

Fantastic experience: I thought the fish were pretty high. Until they told me they quarantined all fish prior to placing them in sales tanks. That's a huge load off the buyer and well worth the extra cash.

Fantastic experience: I absolutely LOVE this place. Every time I go in there, I'm always helped by the staff there and am always given amazing advice which has always been the best interest for saving me money and getting me what I need in order to have an awesome setup. The fish selection can be hit or miss, but you can order through them to get what you're looking for. They have an awesome selection of frags and have whatever you could possibly need on hand. Yes, everything is rather pricey but after losing $150+ in fish in 24hrs from another place, this place is well worth it. What's even cooler to me is that they willingly allowed me to test their waters to demonstrate how certain kits and devices worked. Also, the staff are really fun to have random conversations with while being checked out!

To quickly address your comment about prices, all of our dry goods that have one (like Ecotech, eshopps, Aquaillumination etc) are sold at the Manufacturer's Minimum Advertised Price. Dry goods that do not have a MAP should be very competitively priced to online or other retails stores. Our fish may be a little more than other stores, but that is because of our extensive quarantine process, and most customers agree healthy fish are worth a few $ more.

Fantastic experience: Please treat yourself to this small Valhalla of aquatic pleasures and supplies. Reef eScape has about 60% saltwater and 40% freshwater supplies for those that are interested. They have great tank displays that give you the inspiration to go home and aquascape. They have plant cultures, variety of aquascaping stones and woods. Lots of quality supplies on the wall and quarantine tanks in the back with fish for sale. They even carry some nice Fluval lights for those that are doing freshwater rimless tanks. O will patronize again when in the area. Thank you eScape for a great LFS experience. Please support local.

Fantastic experience: Very competitive prices on a lot of their freshwater supplies, often significantly cheaper than petsmart or Petco and on par with Amazon prices (which are usually the cheapest). They had a few more niche items for freshwater, I found a liquid API gH and KH test kit which I have never seen in store anywhere.

Fantastic experience: This is the only place that I will buy fish from.they have a great quarantine process and I have bought at least 20 fish from them and have never had an issue.
