Fantastic experience: My family and I had the privilege of interacting with Chad he was a delight to speak with and purchase fish from. Chad is a wealth of information and answers our numerous questions with the same excitement that we had. We would highly recommend Chad to anyone new or still learning.

Fantastic experience: Kona Reef’s employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. First time fish tank owners, we recently bought our tank from them and then have had to call multiple times with questions. Our betta fish got very sick and had a strange growth under his belly. The internet and Petco solutions didn’t work. I went in to Kona and talked to Logan, he knew right away what the issue was and gave me a specific medicine. The betta fish is finally getting better!

Negative experience: They use novices for the service of aquariums. They don’t have experts who can do the job correctly but charge you for one. Stay away or you will regret having your aquarium serviced by them.

Fantastic experience: Nicest fish store I have been to in this state and I have been to almost all of them. Highly recommend, fish look extremely happy and healthy unlike many other places.

Negative experience: I waited in this store for a calculated 45 minutes, just wanting to buy some tetras, and nobody every helped me or even acknowledged my presence. Im not sure any employees were present as there was about 5 customers waiting for long periods of time. Guess I'll have to find another location.

Fantastic experience: This place is great! I like the variety of livestock and accessories. They tend to have a limited selection of plants when I go in, but this location is (as far as I’m aware) more focused on hardscape supplies. Super worth checking out! Their north Phoenix and chandler locations also rock! FYI - the north Phoenix location is the place to go for plants AND they have a beautiful display tank! ;)

Fantastic experience: I loved it here, the employees were friendly but also knew what they were talking about. I've been keeping fish my entire life and I still learned new things. I will never go to another store for fish again. The two fish I got are healthy and settling into their tank well. No dead or unhealthy fish that I saw. They also had exotic fish that I had never seen.

Fantastic experience: My family and I checked out the Surprise location for the first time about a month ago. We were assisted by Stephanie who was more than happy to answer questions about aquatic plants and their care. The shop and tanks are well maintained. The fish look healthy, plus there wasn't a bunch of dead fish like certain big pet retailers usually have. Today we returned to get a betta for our 5.5 gallon tank. I love that they are kept in community tanks and not tiny cups! We were assisted by Stephanie again and she was patient while our 12 year old picked one out. She was helpful explaining what we needed to do when we got home. We left with some pearl weed and 2 cherry shrimp along with this guy who is doing awesome. We will be back again probably to set up a bigger tank lol.

Fantastic experience: I've been going here for years! Last time I came was actually before the pandemic, so I found out that they are located in new store. But the people that work here are knowledgeable friendly easy to talk to and willing to help with anything needed! They're selection is always changing as it's whatever they get in stock. But there is always some interesting selections that come in and my wife and I get. The last Cardinal Tetris that we got from here, we're alive for over 5 years now, and four of them out of the 7 we purchased are still doing great in our tank. Although I attribute that to my wife's amazing talent of building amazing aquascapes and stuff, and the freshwater shrimp, the last batches we got ended up mating and we had hundreds of them for years out of a small batch of about 20 that we got. And then lots of other fish that we gotten over the years. All the plants we purchased from there as well are all still 100% alive and kicking and keep them trimmed up and transplant the demand to multiple tanks and environments, and they are all still going strong. I couldn't recommend this place enough to anybody to go to

They have a considerable selection of fresh and saltwater fish, live plants, and accessories. Crown jewel, though... customer service. We wandered for a long while, taking it in... there was always someone nearby to assist and answer all our absurd questions with knowledgeable answers. Good pricing, as well. We noticed on the fish especially, they are cheaper than the big box pet stores, with better quality. Highly recommend.

I had to have asked about at least 15 different fish and Logan knew everything about every fish and coral I was interested in. Fantastic experience: TWO WORDS: KONA REEF! I have been getting the runaround on the Internet. Mainly because I’m a content creator and #fishtok is HUGE! The other well-known big corporation pet stores also gave me the runaround and false information. I am doing everything I can to learn everything about fish and perfecting their water. Logan was incredible!! I won’t go anywhere else now. It’s so beautiful in there. I could live in Kona Reef. Kinda not even kidding. What a gem in the middle of the desert!! My 9 year old daughter took the photos that I added here. They will forever have my business. I will send everybody I know to them. They are well informed fish and water experts! And best of all Logan is happy to teach me how to truly care for my tanks properly and that means the absolute world to me. 13 out of 10! 7 stars!

Fantastic experience: I love this place! Great selection of used equipment with good prices. Nice variety for freshwater and saltwater livestock and corals/plants.. Everything is clean, well kept, and it doesn’t stink inside like some of the other places do. Logan is amazing and answered my 50 million questions about everything and was extremely informative about how to setup and care for a saltwater ecosystem. Knowing someone you can go to with all your questions is a necessity when you’re starting up a saltwater system for the first time. He will definitely be my saltwater go-to guru from now on! He’s got great customer service skills, is overflowing with knowledge, and works very hard to help others learn how to succeed in their aquatic endeavors. I wish there were more people in the world who care about what they do the same way he does!

Fantastic experience: Love Kona Reef! Can't say enough good things about my LFS in Surprise! I've been coming here for years through many freshwater/saltwater tanks, and every possible issue that could come up with them, and everyone is always super helpful. Logan especially is extremely knowledgeable and has helped me with so many problems and he is just genuinely a good guy. Christian is newer and is a huge asset as well. Super thankful to have this place near. Fish are excellent quality and tanks are well-maintained, attractive, and humane. Prices are great. Give them a try! You will not be disappointed!

Negative experience: DO NOT AND I EMPHASIZE DO NOT BUY FISH FROM THIS PLACE!!! They DO NO GUARANTEE THEIR FISH AND WILL NOT REPLACE OR REFUND YOUR MONEY IF THE FISH DIE!! I bought 4 very expensive angel fish from them, $25 each, and 2 died the next morning. When I called the associate said it’s their policy now and said there was NO ONE above him that I could speak with. I had the receipt and everything. So now I’m out $50 bucks and told “thats just life”!!!

My son is setting up his first freshwater tank and we admittedly walked in knowing very little about what we were doing or even where to start with fish selection. The staff was incredibly helpful in walking us through the selection process based on our goals for the tank. We walked out feeling confident in our plan and are very excited to get these fish home and in the tank. My son is confident that as he learns to care for these animals and this tank he has a resource in Kona Reef. We will definitely be back!

They don’t heavily stock small tanks and actually give the fish some room and spread them out how they should be. Great prices- really. Friendly staff. Logan is amazing and very knowledgeable. Negative experience: I feel like this is the type of customer experience you get, when the next closest aquarium store is 20 miles away. Especially if you are wanting fresh water. If you are only interested in selling salt stop carrying fresh. If there were another non-big chain store within 5 miles this place might not be around. #1 closed Sundays!? That has to be one of the 3 busiest days of the retail week… and you’re not open. Convenient for you bad for your customers, a major theme for how this store operates. #2 no prices? I appreciate that you’re trying to use technology by having the tv’s above have the prices of your fish, on a giant confusing list. But a solid 90% of the time, the fish I am looking at is not on your price list on the tv’s. I also know most of the names of the fish. I can’t imagine being a novice and trying to decipher what I am looking at. Do your customers a huge favor and write the fish name and price on the tanks, I promise your customers will be appreciative. Once again convenient for you, terrible for your customers. When I do eventually break down and try and ask an associate for help I run into the next problem. #3 customer service, or more appropriately lack there of. When I am trying to purchase something from your store I feel like I have inconvenienced the associate, and interrupted something more important. I’m sorry I came to a fish store and wanted to purchase fish. To sum it up in a word I feel unwelcome. #4 dying or emaciated fish. Is there nowhere else away from the sales floor these can go? I generally find that there are 10 or so fish that make me question the quality of fish you have. Also the care they are receiving at the store. These are just some of the more blatant problems. It’s frustrating because the west side of the valley has so few options. After about 10 negative experiences I don’t shop here anymore. I travel the 20 or so miles extra to go to the shops that feel like they want my business.

Negative experience: Do NOT buy this product. I came to this store looking for a cure for my tank, and the employee told us to use this product. We took it home, used it, and it polluted our water, made our fishes stop eating and less active, and some died. We took it back for a refund, but the employee came up with excuses and refused to let us return it. Do not waste your money on this garbage.

Positive experience: You know that scene in the movie Joe dirt where the guy selling fireworks only has the worms... That's this place but with clown fish. They used to have an amazing variety of salt water fish in stock, now it's mostly clown fish. Updated post. July 2024 This store is getting better, I've noticed that the selection had started to get better. I've never gotten a fish from them that was sick. The employees are always helpful and knowledgeable

The guys here are very knowledgeable and are always happy to help and have helped me really figure out a lot about the hobby both in Freshwater and Saltwater. If they’re short or missing product they can almost always order it in and if they can’t they’ll find a place you can get it. Best aquarium spot in the West Valley. Hands down.

Fantastic experience: Awesome store with a great selection for both fresh and saltwater fish. The best part though was Aiden! Super knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. We came in with a tall order and were pretty specific in the fish we wanted from each tank and he kept the process fun while trying to catch a specific fish from a cool 60 frantic fish swimming around haha. Fantastic experience: Been to Kona in Surprise many times. We bought our tank there recently. Logan helped us the whole time. Walked around the store letting us know what we would need. They came to our house and set it up and taught us how to use it. We recently started adding fish and I can’t wait to continue growing our home ocean with the help of Kona. I couldn’t do it without them. Recently visited a different store and I was not impressed. Kona is definitely our home store.

Fantastic experience: I love the atmosphere of this store! It is so nice inside. Logan helped me pick out some fish that I was buying as a present for my friend. The staff is very helpful I'll definitely be back to buy again.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to Kona Reef Surprise for about a year. I have two tanks and I get my salt water from this location. They have taken care of me since day one and provide some of the best service I've ever been given at a LFS. Logan is always willing to help and provide an amazing customer service experience. All the guys at the store are awesome and this store in my opinion is the best location out of the 3 stores. They always have an amazing selection fish. The corals always look healthy and clean. They guys really do care about the store, the animals and providing a great experience. Keep up the good work!!!

The staff has been friendly and knowledgeable, Logan has helped me out numerous times now. I definitely recommend them.

Fantastic experience: My family and I have been to Kona Reef twice now. The first time we went to get more information about getting a fish tank. We’re newbie to the aquarium life. We spoke with Logan on this first visit. He helped answer ALL of our questions. He was so nice and informative. The store was very clean. They have a wide variety of fish and the aquariums were so clean. Our second visit was to purchase a fish for our one of our daughters. Logan had helped us again. We appreciate his patience with all of our questions. It was nice because they sell the water there for our new clown fish. We are so thankful we found Kona Reef. The kids loved going there to look at the fish. We will definitely be going there for any of our fish needs going forward.

Fantastic experience: I love going to this fish store. They have amazing customer service, and Logan is always there to help with awesome advice for salt or freshwater creatures. It has helped tremendously in my new adventures in saltwater. They are fairly priced and can order some fish if they don't have it in stock. The display tanks are scaped with items they sell in store, and maintained beautifully to give you some ideas for your tank. Go in and take a peek, you will definitely be back.

Fantastic experience: Kona Reef is the only place we trust to buy our saltwater fish, coral reefs, and equipment. Each time we have gone to the shop, we have been greeted by name, and given prompt attention. Thoroughly knowledgeable about all aspects of this hobby, we have come to rely heavily on staff like Logan to share with us his extensive experience with setting up a healthy tank, choices for great fish and corals, and ways to maintain our tank. Logan really knows his stuff!! Also, the tanks in this shop are impeccably clean and well cared for. Other places cannot even begin to compare to the quality and service you will receive at Kona Reef in Surprise!

Negative experience: I was impressed with the website talking about how meticulously they take care of their fish. Drove there today and picked up 8 fish for my new 55 gallon tank and now, two hours later, 5 are already dead. I took them straight home, correctly acclimated them to the tank (which had properly cycled), and tested my water. All was well. Now I have three bodies unaccounted for and have to tear apart my decor to find them before they affect my water quality. I would have done better with a goldfish from a school fair.
