🗣️ Aquarium: Reviews
Negative experience: Store is nice but the prices on fish are astronomical. I’m all for supporting local fish stores but these prices for fish is out of bounds.
We keep up with pricing nationally in stores and buy only the healthiest livestock available. We have been tracking fish losses from suppliers, farms, and breeders for over 40 years and will not sacrifice quality for price. That being said we always look for the best value and fish that will make it through our quarantine process of up to 2 weeks and our best in class warranties for fish that no one else offers. We will not buy lower quality fish as many do just to reduce pricing. We care about the livestock and its survivability. Perhaps you, like us, are familiar with pricing prior to COVID as they went up drastically across the industry and have not come down due to freight, airlines etc. If they do drop prices we drop prices. We have reduced our margins since covid but can only go so far and keep going for another 40 years. Thank You for the support.
Fantastic experience: We bought a lot of fish for our new aquarium. Our sales person was helpful, friendly, and competent! It was a good experience.
Fantastic experience: Love this store, friendly staff, quality fish, inverts, plants and great pond section!!
Fantastic experience: This store is phenomenal. They have many many choices. Their tanks are all very pretty and the selection is just amazing. They have all supplies you would need. Freshwater and Saltwater fish avaliable.
Thank You
Negative experience: Not recommended. Many of their fish are diseased and they have horrible return policies.
We quarantine all of our fish for two weeks. they have up to a 14 day warranty for VIP customers which is free to sign up for. We buy the healthiest live stock available from sources we have been tracking for quality for 40 years to insure the highest standard in the industry. In 1986 we were the first all saltwater store and the first in the nation to quarantine fish, medicate and treat them prior to sale.
Fantastic experience: Staff is super knowledgable and helpful! This place is such a cool hidden gem and we love to come here for all our fish/aquarium related needs!!
Thank you for the support
Fantastic experience: Join the vip club for great prices on healthy happy fish! We picked up 5 candy cane tetras and they ate thriving! I'm looking forward to setting up a larger tank so we can get more fish!
Thank You for the support
Fantastic experience: This place is a great place to stop fir anyone who keeps a tank of all levels. I just have a 10 gallon fresh tank at the moment but I make a point to stop here for a large majority of my wants/needs. It's a relaxed environment with very helpful and friendly staff.
We appreciate you.
Negative experience: Absolutely horrible staff, they laughed at us when we didn’t bring a water sample with our fish we were returning, (we were never informed to bring one) however my friend did but it was in the same bag as the fish where they informed us that they could not test that water for being “Contaminated by a dead fish” THE FISH DIED THAT NIGHT IN THE SAME WATER SO WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?? These people are incompetent, not to mention the fact that all of the fish were sick when we got them home. Their tanks are disgusting and they have huge fish in tanks as small at 5 gallons. Will never be returning.
Negative experience: Make sure to read the return policy and 1000% know you are getting exactly what you need because the only thing you will get is store credit. I would never recommend this store or go in there again.
Negative experience: Asked for help. Employee said he would find someone then immediately after a couple asks for help and he stops everything he was doing. Nice fish with terrible customer service.
I am sorry this happened. I assume it was just a mis communication with staff over their radios. We were out two people today. Thank You for the feedback. We do our best to make everyone happy and will continue to do so as we have since 1986.
Negative experience: They wouldn’t take my dead fish back because my water wasn’t in a separate container they didn’t tell my I had to put it in a separate container or that I had to bring water they were very rude when I was asking questions about why I couldn’t return them and there tanks aren’t clean and a lot of there fish are sick and they have dead fish floating in the tanks they even laughed in our face about not have a water sample never going back
I am sorry you got so upset. The bottom of the sales ticket states our policy and an 4x 8ft sign at the register along with the acclimation and warranty policies at the front counter for the taking. I reviewed the audio and video as well as the fish room and your other claims are unsubstantiated. You can be heard yelling in the fish room with our cashier letting you know you will need to bring in a separate water sample to be given a store credit. We issue store credit for 14 days to registered customers on freshwater fish. The fish must be brought back in along a separate water sample and a receipt. We do a free water test. Depending on the results, we help the customer fix their water and or issue a fish credit and or pending credit if the water is ok.
Fantastic experience: this place is a bit hard to get to but worth the effort. had to wait till April for the outdoor pond plants to become available. nice assortment of koi fish, salt and tropicals.
Fantastic experience: only place that sell bishop fish 5 stars
Fantastic experience: I just love this little place. The first time I went in, it was just to look around and get a feel for how much koi would cost. I was floored by how cool the displays were! Since then, we’ve bought 8 koi fish from Aquarium. All are thriving. We just bought two pond plants, as well. It’s nice to know there’s still such a specialty, family-owned store in Knoxville.
Thank you for the kind words and support. Customers like you will help keep us around for the next generation of our family to run the business
Fantastic experience: The staff are great. If they don't have what you are looking for they will try to order it for you. Highly recommend.
Negative experience: Edit: Is that response a joke? You admit you're selling infected shrimp and still refuse to take any corrective action! If you can't source healthy shrimp, stop stocking them! I don't care if they're not harmful to fish! You know why? BECAUSE I'M PUTTING THEM IN A SHRIMP TANK WHERE THEY WILL INFECT ALL MY OTHER SHRIMP! Then you have the audacity to say "you sell them as feeders" when the damn tank has a sign on it saying "want to start a shrimp tank? Ask an associate" This is the most incompetent pet store I've ever been to! You people are pathetic and a detriment to the entire hobby! Stop lying to people! Animals are suffering because of you and you could give a damn less as long as you make your nickel! Absolutely atrocious! ----------- Sold me shrimps with parasites. Called to tell them out of courtesy and was told they're harmless and I can just add them with the rest of my population. I paid for shrimp, not horsehair worms. They didn't even care or offer any sort of corrective action. Shameful
You bought ghost shrimp ( unspecified how long ago) and Philip essentially said that ghost shrimp are nearly impossible to get without that parasite nowadays regardless of which distributed you get it from. And that the worm that tends to infect them, the horsehair worm. Is harmless to fish. Ghost shrimp are sold as feeder fish for others to eat.
Positive experience: This place is so cool. I want so badly for it to be 5 stars. Everything is super clean, and I know many people who've purchased fish from them with great success. They know their stuff, and seem to work very hard on providing quality stock. My issue is customer service. I know dealing with the public can be annoying, but it's part of the job, and y'all have got to do better. Walked in on a Thursday afternoon. There were 2 customers in the store, including myself. There were 3 employees on deck that I saw. There was an older lady behind the counter that looked right at me and never said a word. No one ever greeted me or acknowledged my presence. After walking around for 10 minutes, I finally went up to an employee to ask for some advice and about purchasing a fish. He replied, "yeah, what's up?" He was clearly giving the vibe he didn't want to be bothered. There are lots of negative reviews on here regarding this type of behavior. May want to consider some staff training on customer interactions. I'm rooting for you because everything else about your store makes for a wonderful experience!
Fantastic experience: All good things! I love the fish, and options. They take care of the fish really well! Me and my family have always enjoyed showing there
Fantastic experience: Staff are very helpful whenever I have questions. Selection of fish gives me plenty of options for stocking my tank. Great place for equipment and chemicals to keep my water babies happy!
Fantastic experience: Excellent customer service with experts in all things aquarium!
Thank You for the kind words. We appreciate you and your lovely wife.
Fantastic experience: They have some really cute fish and lots of aquatic stuff, we got this little dude [Showboy]
Fantastic experience: The store is really busy on the weekends but they've always provided excellent customer service. Different employees have taken time over the last couple of months to help me with my setup and adjustments on my tank to get it performing the way I wanted. My plants are starting to grow and thrive now.
Fantastic experience: Wide selection of fresh water and salt water fish , plants, tanks, supplies and more.
Fantastic experience: Friendly folks. We have bought all of our fish here and so far only lost 2. Expert knowledge on anything aquarium related.
Fantastic experience: The folks here are very Courteous and professional. Also they have a large variety.
Fantastic experience: Everyone was super helpful getting me setup. They have a HUGE selection of fish and tanks and filters etc.
Fantastic experience: An awesome shop with super knowledgeable and helpful employees. A great place to get what you need and to see a really spectacular collection of fish
Fantastic experience: Stopped In Here 2 Times, The Staff Are Super Friendly, And Know Everything About Fish!
Fantastic experience: Kind heart people great fish selections and simple easy, no hassle like a company fish place like Petco or pet smart.
Fantastic experience: I came on here to leave a review. I also read a couple of the latest other reviews. First, let me start by saying I have done business with this store for nearly two decades. I have been to numerous fish stores around the country. Aquarium Knoxville is one of the finest. As an expert aquarist who breeds fish and consults with aquarium-related businesses, including retail, I can't recommend this store highly enough. Whoa! Secondly, I read a recent comment from a customer who purchased an aquarium light from the store and claimed that it didn't work. Okay, fine. However, that customer indicated he/she tried to return the light to a warehouse. Huh? Why would anyone not return a product to where they physically purchased it? And how do you "accidentally" try to return a product you purchased at one physical location to another unrelated location. That makes no sense at all. Over the years, I have seen some negative comments here by "customers" that, frankly, are nonsense (just like the one I describe above). Such comments, especially ones where the business owner responds and receives no reply, are often the product of competitor interference. Sure, anyone can have a bad experience at any retail store, and I don't doubt that some customers have probably not had the experience they desired at Aquarium Knoxville. Nonetheless, I can assure you that this store is fantastic and, easily, the best in Knoxville. I've been to all the others.
Thank you for the comment.
Fantastic experience: The staff at Aquarium are fantastic! Their passion for aquatic life truly shines, and they’re incredibly knowledgeable. They patiently answered all my questions and even helped troubleshoot some issues I was having. Their guidance helped me find exactly what I needed for my tank. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers
Thank You for the kind words.
Negative experience: I was not aware that Aquarium Life Support Systems and this store are the same company prior to buying an Aquarium Life Support Systems product. I was rudely informed after accidentally showing up at their warehouse site that I needed to come in to the store to have them honor a manufacturer's warranty. The lady at the warehouse attempted to assist and was very sweet about it (although the product was broken beyond repair). Plenty of friendly and nice staff with horrible management. Will be tossing my AquaLife light in search of another brand and will never darken their doorstep again. Would recommend that others do the same.
We have tried to phone. Nancy, the CEO of Aquarium Life Support Systems, multiple times because your light is under warranty. This review does not make sense to the US, as the Aquarium and the manufacturer have tried to resolve this issue. In addition the email thread we have with simply states "bring it by the store and we will take care if it" Your response was "great" You are mistaken. These are not the same business. We buy from them. They sell only to dealers, are not open to the public, and are in an industrial zone. Aquarium on Papermill has the authority to warranty any our brands fully and do. Your light is entirely under warranty. Just come in if her fix did not help you. Susan, who you spoke with, is a shipping manager there. She called me today to tell us about this. She thought the power supply she gave you at no charge fixed the issue. We have sold 1000s of the lights to many happy customers. I am sorry you have had an issue. Your light is entirely under warranty for 1 year through us because you bought the light from us. Beyond that, we sell replacement parts and power supplies.
Negative experience: Bought some fish. They died in hours I understand the stress factor, But HOURS never told me anything about the guarantee program until the fish were long. Plus you need to pay a vip fee just to get the guarantee. Do not reccomend.
This is not accurate. Our fish warranty is on a 4ft by 8ft sign behind the counter and at the bottom of every ticket. In addition, it does cover fish within this length of time if you are not a VIP. VIP, our free loyalty program, gets you added discounts and an extended warranty. I am sorry you were confused about that. We quarantine all our fish before selling them, and all eat and are healthy when sold. Unfortunately, things rarely happen beyond anyone’s control. We guarantee that as long as you bring the fish back in, your tank is not new or cycling, and you bring in a separate water sample for a free water test. If you need further help or information, call or come in. Our number one priority is your success with the pets we all love and keep. Things can happen with livestock, such as fish, but it is never because of something we did not do, a corner we cut, or money we did not spend to help these animals before customers purchase them. We will continue to do this as we have since 1986, which is why the store was founded. We were the first Saltwater store in the nation to quarantine fish prior to sale back then.
Negative experience: I can see from a lot of your reviews that customer service is an issue. My visit today was the same as I had three to four employees walk by me not even acknowledging my presence. I'm sure the excuse will be you were busy, with just three sets of two people I would hate to see you in a really busy environment, and several employees walking around complaining about the work they were having to do. The only time someone spoke to us was as I left. I went to Marine Aquatics a few minutes away and was treated much better in a truly busy store. No need to reach out as I have no want to do business with you.
Fantastic experience: The whole crew is amazing and informative. I started coming here a few months back and I am extremely happy I did. EVERYONE really makes the experience amazing. Great environment and Harriet is a treasure.
Fantastic experience: Such a great store. All the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. They have such a beautiful selection of freshwater and saltwater fish as well as plants, tanks, decor and supplies. I keep freshwater fish. I am always so excited to go see what they have in stock because they have fish that you won’t see everywhere else. Every fish I have brought home has acclimated seamlessly without any illness or unsuspected issues. They obviously take great care of their fish. Will be back when I inevitably get another tank that needs stocked. ♥️
Fantastic experience: Such a beautiful store and the staff are incredibly informative and helpful. We enjoy every visit
Negative experience: Was looking for the kessil a160 tuna blue was told that they where $240 each drove 2 hours there and they said they missed priced them and they where $259 . They said they couldn't do anything about it . I would recommend calling multiple times and checking before going there
Kessil has a strict pricing structure. They set it. We do not set the prices. Our website correctly shows the price you were quoted. The lower price is for a light they discontinued. Sorry for the confusion. We ship to you free from our website orders.
Fantastic experience: This store always has healthy looking fish, and a wide selection. Organized and clean.
Negative experience: Ive been a customer for at least 20 years possibly more bc i cant remember exactly when i found the joint because i was a kid but ive been in and out of the hobby since the 1980s and im telling you this because i while im certainly no brilliant master aquarium owner or builder of any sort but i fancy myself a bit more knowledgeable than the average person on the subject and i want the reader to know that im not some ignorant first timer when i leave this review. Also i feel it might be important to add that this will be the 3rd time ive updated this review and i think thats because i REALLY do like this store and i want to give it a great review... My major problem with this place are the prices and products offered. If you want the very best rimless tank with all the options incuding CO2,saltwater or fresh and you literally dont give a damn how much you pay for it then this is your place, absolutely, you should go here. But if your like the other 99% of the population, i find this place to be kind of uppity and dont get me wrong, the younger employees are extremely helpful, patient, friendly and have a genuine knowledge about most anything youd need to know. My 1st issue that caused me to take notice was about 6 or 8 years ago. Ive always wanted to get some shrimp but i was always afraid to keep any because they were kind of expensive to me at 8.99 and i bought 2 because i remember they had signs up everywhere "15 day guarantee on all fish and 30 days guarantee if you join our club" and there was no fee so i joined thinking hey, if anything goes wrong then i can at least get my money back or something else. Two days later i found them both dead and bagged them up and made the journey back to papermill from loudon county only to have some uppity "manager" point out that on the very bottom line in really small print, it said "no returns for shrimp". As you might imagine, at this point i became quite livid. There is some information i could have used BEFORE they took my money but nobody at any point ever even mentioned this little fact and you might even think to yourself as much money as this place must be making on all these high end rimless tanks and other equipment that they cant even make a 20$ exception to make a customer happy ! Well arent you a big big man with all your signs and small print !? So the 2nd time i dealt with them was when my pleco algae eater and my irredescent shark got too big for my biggest tank and its a 75 gallon tank so i contacted them about giving the fish up to a better bigger home and they assured me they had customers that wanted these type fish and they would possibly even pay me for my fish which was great but it was more important to me for the fish to get a proper habitat until they paid me. 8$ for my 18 inch standard run of the mill plecostomus algae eater and 1.40 for the 14 inch shark. I know they charged whoever they sold them to for a lot more and i would rather they just had let me GIVE the fish to a good home instead of them making a big payday while throwing pennies at me, know what i mean ? So now im at event #3. I bought the two, now sad looking plants pictured below for my 75 gallon planted tank and included a picture of the entire tank so as to prove that i can grow some plants. Ive had those 2 african swords for a few years now and the flame sword is a recent purchase along with the giant hairgrass too. The cryptos are all over a couple of years old as well but i recently pruned some of them way way back due to a bout of hair algae but now thats cleared up and i wanted to add some new stem type plants because ive had some before and they grow quick to fill in spaces. Im still learning plant names and i know one is called red ludwigia but totally cant remember the other name but i did provide photos and i hope theyre just melting like some plants will, before they take root and start growing right. Ill be sure to do a 4th update if thats the case but theyre looking pretty rough and one has broken entirely into two while i was making this review.
Fantastic experience: Definitely cares about the well being of their animals. They’re all kept in clean and well maintained tanks and genuinely look content. Wonderful selection of live plants, substrate, medicine, everything and at good prices too. They’re also very patient and knowledgeable. You can ask questions you need about your pets no matter how complicated or trivial. Always a positive environment 10/10.
Fantastic experience: We decided to get a fish tank for our toddler who loves watching fish, but we didn't know much about them. The staff at this aquarium store have been amazing. Every time we visit, they patiently answer all our questions and help us figure out which fish to get, when to add them, and how to fix any water issues. They're really knowledgeable and never try to upsell us anything. We appreciate their help a lot!
Fantastic experience: Very knowledgeable staff and fantastic selection of fish (salt & fresh water), equipment and supplies for both tanks and ponds. It is fun to just look around!!!
Thank you for the kind words. Hope to see you soon.
Negative experience: Almost impossible to get someone to help you purchase a fish, prices are high, and employees are uninterested in customers. Do not recommend.
We know our prices are competitive and even lower on equal equipment or quality livestock. I am sorry if you had a longer wait than you wanted. We have a sign-in board and wait for people in order that they sign in. We have been hiring since COVID-19, and like all small businesses, we need more people working and inflation to be slowed. We hope to see you again soon.
Positive experience: The store itself is great, good selection, OK prices. The help at the counter in front is great, however the lady that works in the back is not very nice. (May 9th at around 2pm) I asked for help with some plants, she told me I had to sign up on some board that I was unaware of, didn't explain where it was and was not friendly at all, she acted like she didn't want to help me at all. I found the board and There was no one on the board, they were not helping anyone and I still couldn't get the plants or the fish I wanted. I finally gave up and just bought plastic plants and no fish. A loss for the store today. I wanted to spend my money.
We had a lot of problems on May 9th with our computers being down all day and that kept many Managers off the floor. I am sorry about your experience. We will make every effort to make this better for you in the future.
Negative experience: Called and asked a very simple question about what they have in stock. The lady was very rude and didn’t want to check. I explained that I live over and hour away. She eventually checked, told me and hung up on me. Don’t go or call here.
Sorry about that. We are very busy on the weekends. I am sure she was in a hurry and did not intend to be rude. The cashiers answered the phones. They have to get availability questions from sales floor people, and they stay with customers when we are busy, so she had to wait to get the answer.
Fantastic experience: The best place in Knoxville for any of your aquatic needs!! All the employees are so friendly and knowledgeable!!! Im really impressed at the cleanness of the tanks and the lack of aquarium store yucky smell! Fantastic Place!!!
Negative experience: This could be a really nice store, but unfortunately I can't rate it high because the past three times I've been I've had a bad experience with the employees. They're dismissive and consistently give me inaccurate information about their stock, to the point where it feels like they just don't want to deal with me because I'm not making a large purchase.
Emily, I do not see where you have been in since November on your VIP account. Regardless you like all of our customers are a VIP. We attempted to call you a few minutes ago to see how we could help. Sorry if you had a bad experience. We have great staff but unfortunately not enough employees as it has been a challenge to get enough employees since Covid. We are hiring continually. Give us a call back so we can help.
Fantastic experience: We have only done fresh water, but this is our go to store in Knoxville. They always try to do their best and want their fish (and shrimp and snails and plants) to do well. We started just before covid and our glofish have since moved on and we are back for round 2. All the usual drawbacks to being local, but I also consider that to be a feature here in Knoxville. Saturdays can also be quite busy.
Fantastic experience: Love this place! Their fish room is so relaxing! They have a great selection of fish and supplies. Pricing is mostly good too.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place to go to for aquarium fish, iv grew up along side this place since I was a kid. And the employees are very knowledgeable and kinda. They have CO2 setups and refills, and knowledgeable there too. Also have a large variety of fish both saltwater and freshwater. Highly recommended place to go to.
Fantastic experience: My three year old loves to come here as he is fish obsessed. We took him to the Georgia Aquarium and he has talked about it nonstop for 6 months. Visiting the local supply shops quinches his appetite for a few days! This store is so clean and well stocked. If you're looking for fresh or salt water supplies or fish this really looks like the place to go.
Fantastic experience: We had a great experience. We bought a bowfront aquarium with a stand. And some beautiful cichilds (fish) I am extremely happy with our decision to use this fish store. Thank you so much for making our fish experience the absolute best. We are first time fish owners, and they went above and beyond to help us with all the questions we had, and even printed off information for us! Highly highly recommended. We even got a cute little hand towel with their logo on it, since it was our first time there! Be sure to tell them, so you'll get one as well!
Negative experience: Your staff is rude and do not engage with customers even if they talk to them first. My friend and I came in the other day because I needed new fish for my set up. My guppies were second generation and I needed new fins in the water. I also wanted some plants and 2 heaters. But we were completely ignored by your people even though we spoke to them first. The lady feeding the fish my friend spoke to her and she said nothing back. I said something to her also and nothing. I also said something to a guy working there and again nothing. We just went to a regular pet store and spent my money there.
Positive experience: Friendly staff and a great selection of fish and plants. The only reason I docked a star was for the bladder snails that came with the plants. I'm not really upset about it though. It's just a part of the hobby and I kind of expected it to happen.
We do keep the assassin snails in with plants. we carry Tropica Plants which are the best. They offer tissue culture plants that we sell and they are 100% pest free and why people like them.
Negative experience: Bought 4 fish from them. Followed the directions of their staff and 2 friends who have separately had big aquariums and many fish for years. Not only did all the fish die but they also spread some disease to my other fish. Literally killed off my whole tank in less than a week. Wouldn’t recommend this place. Editing to add: I had my other fish (bought elsewhere) for over a year before this happened.
We quarantine and treat all our fish before they are sold and have a warranty on the fish. Sorry if you had a problem. Bring the water sample and the fish back with your receipt, and we will figure out what is wrong and help. This information is at the bottom of your ticket.
Fantastic experience: Aquarium always has a great selection of fish, aquarium decor, and supplies. I’ve been to several fish stores across East Tennessee but this is by far the best.
Negative experience: I am an experienced aquarist currently with 6 freshwater tanks. I've done business a few times over the years with Aquarium. Their saltwater animals may be healthier, but as for freshwater, it's almost as bad as going to the big box stores, but at 2-3 times the price. I've wanted to love this place, but since covid the selection's gone down, prices up, and with my recent purchase from here I lost half of the 10 fish I bought to a gill parasite during quarantine. Not going back, sadly. They have a nice returns policy, but I go to aquarium shops to get live, healthy fish. All too often with this place, this expectation isn't met.
We strive to buy the healthiest livestock from the very best breeders and importers. In addition, we medicate, treat, and hold every fish we get in and do not sell them until they healthy, feeding and have been quarantined. We back that up with a 14 day warranty. I am sorry for any issue had. Our customer have come to us since 1986 for the best combination of quality, service, and price. No big box store can do what we do. How did you determine the cause of your issue?
Fantastic experience: They have a huge selection of fresh and salt water fish. Being a freshwater hobbyist, I can tell you they have the largest selection of unique/rare placos I have ever seen. They also carry the best selection of CO2 equipment here in Knoxville. From the biggest ponds, down to your micro desktop for your beta, and anything in-between, Aquarium Knoxville has you covered.
Fantastic experience: *edit, we were back today, and it was a much nicer experience. Updating my review to 5 stars* We like to go to the aquarium, great selection. Customer service is severely lacking. We had 2 items, waited in line behind 1 person for 10 minutes who was getting fish, not sure what was happening, but they had to go get new fish several times. there were 3 people behind the counter and not one of them made any eye contact with us, or offered to move the people who were taking forever to the side! Even if they acknowledged us and said hey it’ll be a minute- I’m sorry- or something- I would have been happy with! But nope. So after a few more minutes we put our stuff back and walked out. Also, every time we have come here (probably 10 times in the last year) not One time we’re we greeted. Very cold vibes! But sadly we’ll probably be back cuz like I said, great selection.
Staffing has been an issue since Covid. We have staff I am proud of but we are still half our normal staffing levels. We will continue to strive to make every customer happy.
Fantastic experience: Great place to get fish and pond plants. The folks here were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and accommodating. It is a little hard to find, because it is up a hill behind a hotel, but worth the drive. They seem to have everything you could possibly need for aquariums, terrariums and ponds.
Fantastic experience: I have not been in there in a while do to the drive and I regret not coming sooner. Last time I was there, had a great time and honestly never seen a business ran so good before. And even today the only bad thing i can even say is the drive to get there and the Karen's you see in the reviews. lol. The wait isn't to bad, the prices are fair, The fish I bought are in good quality, the staff is very friendly, even seen the owner a few times. If I didn't already work at Walmart, I'd love to get a job there. They seem to really care about there business unlike my store. They seem to have the best management and team and a owner who cares about his business. 10 out of 10 would recommend shopping there for your supplies and fish.
Fantastic experience: Aquarium Haven: Where Knowledge Meets Warmth, and Harriet's Heart Shines Bright! I can't recommend this aquarium store enough! From the moment I walked in, I was blown away by their incredible knowledge of the hobby. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or just starting out, they have all the expertise you need to make your aquatic experience a success. The staff here is not only knowledgeable but also incredibly personable. They take the time to listen to your needs and guide you in the right direction. It's like talking to old friends who genuinely care about your interests and want to see you succeed in your aquarium endeavors. And let's talk about their selection—it's simply outstanding. They have everything you could possibly dream of for your underwater world. From exotic fish to vibrant plants and top-of-the-line equipment, they've got it all. I could spend hours browsing through their aisles, and each visit leaves me inspired to create something new and beautiful in my own tank. What sets this place apart, though, is the fact that it's family-owned. You can feel the passion and love they have for this business in every aspect of the store. It creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel like part of the family. But there's one person who truly makes this place exceptional—Harriet. She's an absolute gem. From the first day I met her, she reminded me of my beloved grandmother, who passed away recently. Harriet has a way of making you feel right at home, and her genuine care and warmth brighten every visit. Her personal touch and attention to detail have made a world of difference in my aquarium journey. Every time I come back to this store, it's like returning to a place filled with fond memories and new possibilities. And it wouldn't be the same without Harriet's presence. She's the heart and soul of this place, and her kindness has left a lasting impact on me. In summary, if you're looking for a place with exceptional knowledge, a personable and friendly staff, a vast selection of products, and a family-owned charm, this aquarium store is the perfect destination. But the reason I keep coming back time and again is Harriet. She's the reason this store feels like a second home to me, and her warm hospitality makes every visit unforgettable. Don't miss out on this amazing experience!
Thank You for the kind words we appreciate you
Fantastic experience: Nice store, with a friendly and knowledgable staff. They have a GREAT selection of fish- Usually. The last few times I've been in I've been a little disappointed in the saltwater selection. The freshwater section is great- they have a lot of fish you won't see anywhere else, and the BEST selection of nano fish in the area. All the fish look good, and healthy. I've always done well with what I've bought there. Nice selection of dry goods, too, and at decent prices.
Positive experience: I feel the aquarium has fall off in the last year or so. Prices are way up selection sub par. Always new faces when I come in. Still a good place just not my #1 anymore in Knoxville
Sorry you feel this way. Prices are up since Covid on all segments of the economy. We have lowered our margins and continue to do all we can to offer the best combination of quality service and price. We closely monitor pricing and not only offer better quality and prices than our competitors but a large selection of goods. If we are out of something it is not something we have not ordered but items the manufacturers do not have. Fish prices have increased like everything else but we do not set these prices either. Like you we hope that changes but we have not seen that in the industry or any industry yet. What we will not do is buy lower quality fish or supplies as that is a disservice to our loyal customers who we have served since 1986. Thank you for the feedback. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Negative experience: Have been a repeat customer for many years. Today made special trip to purchase koi. Several employees in front never asked could they help. Went to koi tank, young man there never asked could he help just ignored us. Then he left and didn't come back. After long time went up front asked for help at koi. Red bearded dude at checkout said ok but no one came. Waited 15 more and decided to go. Passed red beard dude at counter who didn't acknowledge our leaving or fact that we didn't buy the koi we wanted. Felt like no one in the store gave a darn about anything, just eating and talking to one another. Very disappointed. Really wanted the koi. Need to fire some people and start over or close.
Fantastic experience: I purchased a water pump 8 months ago from Aquarium. The pump stopped working and I was concerned about having to return it, because the only dealings I had in the past with them was when I originally purchased the pump. I could not be more pleased with the customer service! After checking out the pump they replaced it with a new one. Everyone was so polite and helpful. The lady (Harriette) working the front register was so sweet and funny. She made my day! Thank you Aquarium staff for making this a very pleasant experience. You are definitely a 5 star business!!
We appreciate you.
Positive experience: I gave 3 stars because it's a nice place but I drove an hour because I was told they had alot of pond plants but when I got there they didn't have a a good variety at all and no water hyacinths or cattails. Plants were over priced in my opinion at $14.99 for marginal plants and $39.99 for all water lilies. The worst part about this place is the lack of efficiency when it comes to waiting on customers. Waited forever for plant help, fish help and then to cash out.
The Hyacinth were delayed in shipping beyond our control. They are due in today or tomorrow we are told now. Sorry you did not think we had a lot of plants. We have as many as we can purchase as the growers are low. If you are looking for anything in particular we can try and get it. Give us a call. In regard to prices we have not changed our pricing even with freight and plant prices rising tremendously since covid. If you check nurseries as we do an any type of plants the prices have increased a lot across agriculture with inflation issues which are beyond our control. Give us a call of you would like to discuss this further
Fantastic experience: We've been loyal customers to this store for years and years. Even after moving out of the area we haven't found a single store that compares to the professionalism, extensive knowledge, and excellent customer service. I will continue to order all my livestock and supplies through this store regardless of the longer drive to pick up said items. 10/10 Accept no substitute!
We appreciate you
Negative experience: Staff that assist with fish are amazing. Very helpful and knowledgeable. The older lady that works at the front counter is the exact opposite. Anytime I have spoken to her or ask her a question it’s like I’m bothering her. She needs to retire or work at the DMV where she would be better suited!
Negative experience: Charged me $10 to ship a plastic item weighing 2 ounces via first class mail. First class postage for such an item would be no more than 3 or 4 bucks. Make money off of you any way they can. Will not be a repeat customer. EDIT: In response to owner. The fastest shipping method in that 10 dollar price would have been priority. 10 dollar shipping on a 4 ounce part means that you definitely made a significant profit off of my order on the shipping. At least 6 bucks worth. I suggest you change the name of your 'flat rate' shipping below that 49 threshold to something else. It implies a shipping method that you do not (always) use. I would not have ordered this part from you had I known your 'flat rate shipping' was not USPS flat rate priority.
We have free shipping for over $49. We do not make money on shipping. If you choose the 9.99 option, we expedite the shipments and give them priority shipping them the fastest way within that amount. If the item went first class, it is because it stated via our portal with shipping which looks at many options as the quickest way. However, shippers only guarantee it if you pay for overnight fed x, which is not shipped free, but you can request that quote. Sorry for any confusion.
Fantastic experience: More than substantial selection of freshwater plants and fish; although I’d personally like to see more stock in their dry goods offered (natural rocks, driftwood, substrates, etc). The staff is always knowledgeable and more than happy to answer questions, offer advice, and even just chat about aquarium stuff ☺️ My 10 year old son is on the spectrum and is VERY obsessed with fish keeping, creating aquatic biotopes, and everything marine biology. The staff not only tolerates his /perpetual/ fish talk - they actually engage with him and seem to enjoy, and even praise, his extensive knowledge of the aquatic sciences and different fish species. It's our favorite place to spend our mother/son dates
Thank You for the kind review and comments
Fantastic experience: This is the best aquatic store in Knoxville, hands down. Emma and all the other employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. We have 7 tanks and get all our supplies, aquatic plants, and animals from Aquarium. I won't shop for these specialty items anywhere else.
Thank you for the support, and we appreciate your business. I will let Emma know about the review.
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love the Aquarium store and highly recommend it! I recently bought a tank and Phillip from the store helped to install it. He has been incredibly helpful and incredibly knowledgeable, helping me with all my endless questions. Not only this, but all the team in the store have been helpful too and welcoming. I’m so glad I found the Aquarium store - it has been an amazing experience, and I’m loving my tank!
Thank You for the review, and we appreciate your business.
Fantastic experience: Great stock of ALL different kinds of fish and shrimp. I love this place.
Thank You for the Review. We appreciate your business.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place to start if you’re wanting to learn how to do an exotic fish tank! They have many different fish including SALT WATER!! I got my first pufferfish and he is so healthy and happy. They take amazing care of the fish!
Thank You for the review. We appreciate your business and hope your puffer continues to do very well. We are always trying to improve since 1986. Hope to see you soon.
Positive experience: Pretty cool place. My 3 year old really liked to see all the fish, and it was nice to be able to go to a place with a good assortment. This is definitely a place for a more advanced aquarium owner as far as the items they have for sale are concerned.
We have things at every level and price point and shoot for the best combination of quality service and price for the goods we recommend. We always want to offer the best picks for our customer's success.
Negative experience: Back in the summer I went there to buy pond fish and the person working was so helpful and knowledgeable about the fish and what I needed for my pond. But my visit recently this was not the case when I asked one of the employees there about a product they told me you will just have to read the back of the package as they had zero knowledge about the fish or ponds. Very disappointing
What was your question?
Fantastic experience: We have been a couple of times as we set up a new tank for our daughter. We have had the pleasure of working with Emma there. It’s clear she loves her job and has gone above and beyond to cater to a very excited 7 year old. Thank you!!
Emma is great and part of our family. Thank You for the kind words and happy fishkeeping. We appreciate you.
Positive experience: Lots of great fish and good info to start a new tank
Thank you. We want to help
Negative experience: I liked that place but now I don't even recommend it the staff is very rude when when you need help buying a fish the last two times they treated me badly the first time a worker helped me made a face when I told her I wanted some fish and she left me Waiting for half an hour, he began to do other things, ignoring me until he finally felt like answering me. The second person told him that if he could help me and he answered rudely, you have to put your name on the blackboard and wait your turn with an arrogant attitude. they definitely need to talk to their staff on how to know how to serve customers. If you wanna go to a good place go to aquatic marines it is also located in Knoxville they even ask you if you need anything without you having to ask for help
We were very busy today on new years ever and had 4 staff members out. I was on the floor all but 30 minutes and given we had only three of us on the floor, I was happy with the flow of customers. I am sorry you had a bad experience. We will continue to have a sign in board. We have a very large customer traffic volume and want to make sure we fairly go from one person to the next without skipping people. It is not fair to compare us to stores that can be run by two people and are very small. We teach our staff and make every attempt to speak with every customer. The sign in board was implemented from our many loyal customer recommendations. We are here to serve as one of the largest stores in the country since 1986. Have a happy new year. I will talk to the staff about getting stressed when we are very busy and how to make sure hurrying and working hard is not perceived as ignoring someone.
Fantastic experience: The aquarium in Knoxville. If you look at my reviews, it's very hard to get a five-star review. Their selection of fish is the best I found so far in Tri-City area in Knoxville area. Their staff is always very, very knowledgeable and they have a super selection of fish that are always healthy. I will try to get some pictures of the fish but It might have to wait till next time I go as they are already in the tank
I am reading this to the team and we are very happy you are happy.
Negative experience: We have no choice but this store but it's not good I bought three fish that died the next day and causing me to lose some of my fish and they call them self-(quality) also bought brine shrimp eggs that didn't hatch so now I get them from Amazon.
We carry Brine shrimp eggs from Bay Brand the oldest and largest producer of brineshrimo in North America. We offer a 14 day guarantee to members on freshwater fish. All fish are quarantined, treated and feeding before they sold.
Fantastic experience: Went back to my favorite fish store today, terrific as always! No better place to shop for Tropical Fish in Knoxville!!! Their staff is full of knowledge and very helpful! A great place to get my fish and plants for my fish tanks and a really great place to get Koi and everything I need for my pond. Love this place!
Thank you for the review
Negative experience: Absolute worse place to get fish. I put my name on the board and waited for 40 minutes to get help and help never came worst place ever. In the store was 2 customers and I was one of them. I counted 5 employees just standing around. If they were busy I would understand but they were not!
We were very busy today. Like everyone else we had two people out and are short staffed. We are hiring and have been like everyone else since COVID. I looked at the cameras and you only waited 15 minutes. That being said, our goal is people being waited on as soon as possible.
Fantastic experience: I don’t often write reviews but this one warranted. I stopped by the store purely by coincidence on my long drive to Dallas. First of all, as someone traveling through I was not there for fish (they had a great selection and they looked well cared for). Secondly I just wanted to browse. After walking around the store and picking out some niche items I couldn’t find anywhere for a price that made sense. I then had questions about CO2 in my tank, I asked one of the staff who let me know if I could wait she could direct me to someone that can speak on it. The owner came out and took the time to explain, what works and what didn’t, his own opinion by testing the regulators, and I felt all of the things he talked about was honest. I was incredibly happy with my visit and CO2 related purchases. I will be stopping by on my next visit ;)
Thank you for the kind review and business. Your regulator will ship this week. You have my contact if you ever need anything or have questions.
Fantastic experience: This store is actually quite large, and has TONS of supplies compared to some other local fish stores. I’ve never purchased livestock here, but the selection always seems healthy and well taken care of
Thank you for the honest Review.
Fantastic experience: My family and I adore this place! My parents have been customers here for a long time. My parents always come here to buy freshwater and saltwater fish! Yesterday we purchased several koi, and an excellent lady helped us out! I wish I had caught her name so she could get the credit she deserves for a fantastic shopping experience. There were extensive types of koi in the fish tubs at a great price which is always appreciated! I remember being so excited as a kid when I got to go here because I loved all of the fish. Now I'm an adult, and it's still a thrilling visual! The staff is still lovely, and I hope to come back soon!
Most likely that was Emilla. We appreciate you. Thank you for the kind words.
Positive experience: I visited today in hopes of finding a fancy goldfish and a long fin bristlenose pleco for my Coldwater tank. They only had 3 gold fish and they were rather expensive. I didn't find any bristlenose plecos, aside from the super red, which were also out of my budget. I was there about 20 minutes and not one employee acknowledged my existence or asked to help me in anyway.
We have had a hard time hiring enough staff since COVID. I am sorry you were not spoken to right away. The goldfish we keep are Imported China Goldfish. These are more expensive and nicer. However, since Covid, the prices have been higher. We have reduced our margins on them, but they are still more than they used to be. We have more of all the items you are looking for now.
Fantastic experience: The Aquarium of Knoxville is hands down the best fish/supply store in the East region of Tennessee. The staff like always are friendly and knowledgeable. The owner as well is very friendly and helpful. Not too recently I purchased a female Bamboo Catshark. May I say, I am very pleased with my purchase. This is perhaps my favorite fish I have ever owned and taken care of. The staff were understanding and helpful when it came to setting up aquarium for a shark. My final remark is that she eats like a pig and is very interesting to watch swimming. I will continue to do future business with this establishment and spread the message that it is a wonderful store. Thanks
Thank you for the review. Since 1986 we have been proud of our efforts and love our customers.
Negative experience: Ok. So I’ve recently moved from California and have been slowly setting up my tank and have tried the aquarium a few times. My fish friends around town have spoken about the unfriendly staff at aquarium before, but I live so close and feel like they have a beautiful, well established fish store… so I keep going back. My first experience. Emerald crabs. Bought three…two were dead in the bag when coming home. I let it go. They are 6.99 a piece. I was cool. Whatever. Today’s experience. 4/10/22 First off. The girl helping me knew NOTHING about saltwater fish or invertebrates. I have a 31 gallon saltwater bio cube and 29 gallon saltwater tank. They bagged up a blue spotted puffer for me and explained that the dwarf valentine puffer I currently have will fight with the new blue spotted puffer. I told them to pause and leave my puffer bagged. While purchasing some emerald crabs (poor girl working had no experience with fish and/or bagging them) they sold my puffer to another customer. Literally sold the fish they had bagged for me to another customer. My nitrates were a little high in my tank when told about my water check, but NO one in this place offered to help or talk to me about it. Patrick and all the other staff just stuck their heads down and helped no one. I confronted him face to face and asked why he sold the fish and he just kept his head down and didn’t say a word. This place is as everyone around town in the fish community has explained it AWFUL and they need to work on their guests relations and hire people who actually know what they are talking about. I walked out and told them they can eat my $3 water check when it took 45 mins and I got there at 1pm right when they opened. If you’re looking for a long term guide in fish relations… DO NOT SHOP HERE!
We have never employed someone named Patrick.
Fantastic experience: Aquarium Knoxville saved me today. I'm a newbie and have a lot of their equipment, plus a few starter guppies and corys. This afternoon I realized that 1) we have 12 new guppy fry as of sometime after 10 a.m.; (so we now have 20 total); and thennnnnnn . . . 2) after returning from a dog walk, to my horror, I found that our cat has severed the thermostat wire, either overnight or early this morning. The tank is way colder than normal, and I can't get a floating thermostat for two more hours. I called the store in somewhat of a panic. I'm sure the wonderful gentlemen I spoke with could hear it in my voice. He gave me a crash course in tank piece parts and told me to turn up the heater to 78 degrees. So now I can breathe again after a mild "cardiac event." The people at Aquarium Knoxville are the best. From my first time there to buy a tank and furnishings, and every encounter with them since, each employee has been friendly and helpful every step of the way. Thanks for the urgent advice today, Ralph!
My Pleasure
Negative experience: The fish are gorgeous and the selection is amazing. However finding an employee there with the ability to have nice customer service is impossible. Every time I've been in the store I have encountered rude employees. Very disappointing since this is a hobby and people do it for fun and relaxation.
Negative experience: In response to the owner in regards to the puffers ...........the price displayed on the tank was 9.99 when we first viewed the fish which happened to be in quarantine.......we placed a special order so as to have them there waiting on us when they were released from quarantine so we were guaranteed to get them .....we came in the day of release well guess what price on there tank still said 9.99 we were charged 11.99 per fish ....we did not notice until we got home that we paid more than the display said but I didn't worry about it because I thought your establishment would correct it no sweat when we came back for feeders etc but you didn't......then swore up and down they were 11.99 today until my wife showed you differently. The price of those fish never changed the whole time yall just seen a couple and hoped they'd never notice the price gouge but we did then when confronted and expected to correct the issue you didn't so, so long we'll never be back and our business will be given to the coral reef in Jefferson County where we pay the price that's advertised. Oh also before you start on changing prices and them fluctuating it's plain to see yall had already bought them from the breeder and had them priced on a certain price point since they were in quarantine in your store so nice try on pulling the wool over people's eyes lol
To Clarify further. I looked up the breeder invoices and searched the log on the computer for our label printer. We received a shipment and printed BB Puffer labels on 10/6/2021 the price went up to 11.99 you Purchased on 10/9 as your invoice stated. We sold that shipment out and received another shipment on 10/20 they went back down to 9.99. You came in on 10/21 and made another purchase. At that time you saw the price had gone down and that is what you are upset about. We have written log of all of this and nothing was false advertised. The pictures you took and the invoice represent this as well. Yes we received a New shipment that was in quarantine. The price was higher and the new labels had not been printed yet. We mark all new fish not for sale to make sure they are healthy, eating, to preventatively treat them and to update to the shipments prices. We do not have invoices always the day the shipments arrive posted. When you came in later the current (updated) 11.99 label was on the tank and you saw it. That is what staff use to mark the bags for the register. They hand write that on your fish bags for you to clearly see. It was correct. Then two weeks later we received a new shipment after the previous shipmmet was sold out. They were sold to us at a lower better price and on promotion aka sale. So they went back down to 9.99. We take the same margins regardless and pass the savings on to our customers as promotions. I am sure you understand this. This is like sales at all retail stores. I will say price fluctuations have been much more frequent from our breeders to us since COVID. They rely on air shipping with the airlines and that has fluctuated drastically with covid fuel etc as of late. I am sorry if this confused you but when you came in and saw the price when they were ready for sale you could have chosen to wait for a promotion or better price. I understand that. But writing a 1 star review and using foul language cursing at the staff in the store and on the phone while miss representing the situation is not acceptable. The prices were not changed to mislead you or anyone else. We take great pride in our business and appreciate our customers. No one would ever do anything you are saying nor did we.
Negative experience: Always check your receipts, the price on the tanks show a cheaper price than what they charge you. Take pictures for when you go to the register and make sure you don’t get over charged because they will not make it right. Don’t make this mistake be very careful when purchasing from this store In response to your response, I am sorry but you are incorrect. The price on the sticker posted on my review is from when I got the fish. Yes I came back today as I live over an hour away and yet again today they are the same price and the young man I spoke with even argued with me about it until we walked back there and he seen for himself. That is when he started changing his story. I showed the date I took the picture posted. You all are doing people wrong and people should know it.
Sorry for you misunderstanding pricing. Your complaint was about livestock. Livestock prices fluctuate based on what we are charged. If an item is bought at a lower price one week then we sell it for less. We do not make more if prices rise or fall. This does change from week to week from suppliers. In your case, you bought puffers one week when they were not on promotion from the supplier. Then after 14 days you came back in and the prices had dropped. That is beyond our control and you were charged exactly what the price was on the tank and for the fish at the time of purchase. We do not set prices we pay from breeders. They change and we will continue to keep a fair price on quality livestock we can provide a warranty on.
Negative experience: The Owner ( short older woman with glasses), her daughter has horrible customer service skills they only care about your money!…. Save your time an money the Aquatic marine on Clinton highway is 1000 times better with very affordable prices, knowledgeable staff… this place is over priced with piss poor customer service, Very low quality fish! Differently NOT the go to fish store in Knoxville anymore !
Terry, Sorry you felt like you should post a review like this. We offer the longest warranties on fish around and quarantine the fish for up to 14 days prior to selling fish. We only sell eating healthy fish and refuse to sacrifice on the quality of our livestock. We go to great pains to buy from the best suppliers and buy MAC certified and guarantied non drugged fish. I personally have visited and been down collecting with our collectors. Drugged fish cost less but suffer from organ damage that is not apparent until weeks after purchase. We will not carry these. For over 37 years we have provided our customers with healthy stock and strive to make sure no fish is lost because of something we did not do. We back this up with free water tests and warranties when customers have issues. My understanding is you were upset because our loyalty system showed you did not have points. It showed negative points. This is not something staff can audit. They did call the developer and have your account audited. The ladies you mentioned attempted to call you all day long but you did not take our calls. We have the information you requested. Have a good evening.
Negative experience: Aquarium has always been my go-to place for years. The staff are very knowledgeable. There product and livestock are high quality. That being said, this will be the last time I ever buy anything from there. I was treated incompetent even though I've been doing this for years. I buy fish from there and always explain my parameters and the aquarium they will be going in and they give me recommendations on what to put in there. After being told the fish I was purchasing would go in my tank they ate all my neons and come to find out need twice the space that I have. When I called them to get a credit issue to me I was not informed that the fish would have to be quarantine before I would be given any credit and that they charge for that quarantine. Also they would only give me 50% credit on what I purchased the fish for and after treatment and quarantine I basically made an hour and a half drive for nothing. You better do your own research on any fish you buy from there before ever purchasing it and you can expect them to be arrogant. I will never go in that store again. There are too many other places to shop and the aquatic store on Clinton highway treats me 10 times better.
Jeff what fish did you buy that you brought back?
Positive experience: Somebody said it was hard to get waited on. They have a board that you sign in on. They have a nice assortment of fish. I love Goldies (Goldfish) and can sometimes find unique ones here. I’ve never had a problem with any fish I’ve bought from the Aquarium. I just wish I’d get a heads up on their sales.
Thank you for the reply. We struggle with understaffing like the majority of businesses right now. We continue to do our best and are thankful for our customers.
Fantastic experience: It’s rly good and I only really have a question… I got 2 fish from the same tank and they were mating partners as the guy said and I take them home and the first day is good and they’re all healthy and then the next day they the bigger female starts chasing and nipping the male. Is that mating or attacking and what should I do
