Fantastic experience: I would consider Biomes a hidden gem. It's a smaller aquarium but still large enough to keep you entertained for a while. I would typically spend about 1.5 hours there. They do parties and events in the morning, are open to the general public in the afternoon, and sometimes host after hour activities for adults in the evening. There are demonstrations every half an hour which are entertaining and informative for both kids and adults. I noticed the staff generally have marine biology degrees or similar levels of knowledge. They are passionate about ocean life and willing to answer any questions you have about any of the fish there. The exhibits are generally either aquariums where the fish are never that far away or open top floor tanks where you can get right up to the edge of the water. Several of the open top tanks are touch tanks where you can feel the sea creatures in that tank. Be sure to read the nearby signs to see how best to interact with the sea creatures in that particular tank. I would recommend Biomes if you like aquariums or if you have kids.

Fantastic experience: Lots of fishies and intel on fishies and friendly staff but my favorite part has to be visiting their Axolotl toothless

Fantastic experience: A lot of the reviews says it is a great place for kids. While it is, this place is also excellent for teenagers and adults. The place is interactive with marine life and also educational. One of my favorite events is the adult only nights for terrarium builds with BYOB

Fantastic experience: First time visiting Biomes and really didn't know what to expect but was truly blown away by the education and care that happens here. We met Mariah, one of the staff members, and she was incredible! So attentive, answering all our questions and sharing additional facts, while also being aware of all the other aquarium go-ers. We got to watch her feed Darwin and she was so sweet to the kids who were watching while giving great educational content and monitoring everyone who wanted to give Darwin some pets. There's so much to see and learn you can spend a whole afternoon here and never be bored!

Fantastic experience: What a great place! My 5 year old great-nephew and my 23 year old daughter, as well as the other adults love this place. The tortoise was walking around the place free; touch tanks, very cool fish, ferrets and 2 octopi. 2nd time going. Came from MA just to go here again.

Fantastic experience: Our kids loved it. Spent about 2 hours relaxing and playing with the sea animals. Very unique place good for 1, 3, 5, and 9 year old. You have a lot of open tanks that you can pet the fish as well as they have a lot of areas that explains the science and a little kid play area.

Fantastic experience: We love this aquarium! It is very hands-on with lots of touch tanks and knowledgeable staff willing to give more information on any of the fish or other creatures there. We visited with a homeschool group and it was a great experience getting to do a scavenger hunt and see a puffer fish demonstration at the end. There is also a great kids play area, picnic tables with activities set up, and great books to flip through.

Fantastic experience: Great, small aquarium/reptile center with so much for kids and adults to look at and learn about.

Fantastic experience: Recently celebrated a birthday party here with friends, and was compelled to leave a review. Lifelong Rhode Islander - a biologist to boot - and I had never been here before. I still cannot believe how much fun this group of 30-something y/o "kids" had during those few hours. A total testament to this interactive experience with their friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Fantastic experience: Went for the last 40 min of the day and it was great. I love the open touch tanks and the info cards on each tank. Would definitely recommend if you have a kid with a lot of energy.

Fantastic experience: Great place to visit to learn about ocean-dwelling animals. Lived Biscuit and Gravy (the two octopi), getting hands cleaned by shrimp, and touching sharks and sting rays.

Fantastic experience: Such a great family event. Driving by it looks like a funky store front. Once inside it was a wonderful learning experience for young and old alike.

Positive experience: we love this place! all the touch tanks are so fun! plus it's much more affordable than other aquariums.

Fantastic experience: This place has educated my kiddos since 2013 when they were much younger and even now that they are older they still love going to visit “Darwin” the tortoise and all the other animals and sea creatures. Tip: if you have little kids you are bringing make sure to bring an extra set of clothes! I remember my first time my little ones were so excited touching the “touch tank” animals and got themselves wet.

Fantastic experience: Came here last summer and had a blast. I’m sure kids are having a great time here, but my partner and I in our late 20s spent probably close to 2 hours here reading about all the animals, taking pictures, greeting the giant tortoise and talking to the staff! The owner was so kind and answered all our questions. The work they’re doing at this place is top notch, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon at any age!

Fantastic experience: We've got memberships to Mystic, but if you're looking for a safe, interactive place to keep your kid entertained for hours, this is it. We have an almost 2 year old who LOVED this place. I was worried to leave. Where do I start. They have a tortoise that roams. He's huge and adorable and super friendly. The toddler could not get enough of him. Incredible. So many fish and touch tanks. So, so many. Little exhibits and quirks like an African cichlids tunnel for little ones and some more interactive exhibits kept up with his attention span. There's tables and games on the side to pass more time by as well. In the corner, there's a toddler/small child space with ferrets, more tanks, toy boats, books, and a ball/pipe section. He could've spent all day there. Whoever designed the layout was a genius. I've never seen him more engaged for that long. Wonderful, wonderful spot. Way easier as a parent than the full size aquarium and equally entertaining for the little one. A nice little gift shop, too!

Fantastic experience: I took my girlfriend here on a date, because we are both both fish nerds and we were beyond amazed by this place. The workers were all super friendly. We had an interaction with who I assume was the owner and told us all about the big eyed fish. This place is super kid and adult friendly. Very reasonably priced tickets and very reasonably priced items at the gift shop. We will definitely be coming back!

Negative experience: This is the first and last time we will be visiting Biomes. First impressions were amazing, we were having fun, additional families started to come in and enjoy what they had to offer, and then my 18 month old son started to cry uncontrollably. My wife and I did everything in our power to try to calm him down whilst trying to keep our 7 and 11 year old entertained. After some time, we did eventually accomplish to quiet him down. I was then approached by an employee who stated that they had received complains from other families that my 18 month old son’s crying and screaming were too much and suggested I bring him outside tonight “calm him down”. The employee didn’t want to be “that guy” but they were. I informed my wife of the situation and brought our son outside. My wife tried to keep the other kids inside and entertained however, the damage was done and she followed suit behind me after about 5 minutes. After we got the kids in the car I went back in to speak with the staff about how we were treated unfairly and asked for a refund. We weren’t even there an hour at this point. The employee (who was the same employee that suggested I take my son outside) did not seem incredibly considerate and suggested initially that I can wait for a call from the manager. I requested the manager immediately as I was visibly upset. The manager came and did do the right thing and refund us for the visit. The manager stated “it’s very awkward and uncomfortable for us to have even spoke to you about this matter”. If it was so uncomfortable, then why bring it up, if you’re a family friendly facility? We paid just as much to be there as the other family. I don’t understand why we were asked to take him out in the first place. Prior to my son’s meltdown, a child approached my older kid while they were playing with legos making a boat with them. The kid took the Lego boat and smashed it to smithereens and screamed as his parents picked him up. We didn’t complain. Kids were being kids!

Fantastic experience: Had my sons 5th birthday party at BIOMES today, and it was incredible! We’ve always loved Biomes and visited a few times a year for my shark obsessed kiddo. Today, he got to pet, feed, and take pictures with sharks and eels, care for a tortoise, learn about so many creatures & with space to play with his whole class, family & friends. Noah was a fantastic host and the kids loved hearing him talk about the animals. The relaxed environment with SO many amazing things to explore, it was just the perfect spot. We had kids ranging from babies-10 year olds and even adults had a great time. Would 10/10 recommend for a birthday party!

Fantastic experience: Great place for young kids to visit. It is a medium sized private aquarium with many hands on tanks that kids can reach into and feel fish, eels and rays. More tanks are for just viewing. A great way to spent a couple of hours in both children 3-12.

Fantastic experience: We recently discovered this amazing hidden gem, and it exceeded all our expectations! It was our first time visiting, and my daughter absolutely loved it. One of the highlights was seeing a turtle casually walking around the grounds. My daughter was thrilled and wanted to pet him every chance she got. This place is not only fun for families but also educational. The interactive exhibits and hands-on activities kept us engaged and entertained throughout our visit. It's a perfect spot for a family outing, blending fun and learning seamlessly. Highly recommended!

Fantastic experience: Such a fun spot for kids to learn! We stayed about 1.5 hours and felt like we saw and experienced everything. We loved all the touch tanks and meeting Darwin!! Perfect activity... not too long, inexpensive.. you're free to experience everything at your own pace as many times as you want. There's a play area, demonstrations, and tables where you can have snack break.

Fantastic experience: Great displays of local sea life. Touch tanks are a very nice feature for kids (young and old). Demonstration are quite informative.

Fantastic experience: This aquarium is small, and if you come here with that understanding you will have a wonderful time. This aquarium is amazing with many different creatures on display including octopuses, seahorses and horseshoe crabs. The workers here are very knowledgeable and pleasant as well; they really seem to love what they do. A perfect adventure for an hour or two, especially with kids.

Fantastic experience: Love this place! Not big but alot of touch tanks. In the summer and weekends they have feeding and demonstrations for 8 areas. Will definitely return.

Fantastic experience: Biomes Marine Biology Center is such a great place. I feel kids and adults can enjoy themselves here. If you choose to visit, it's important to know this establishment is NOT an aquarium . It's one small warehouse kind of building that houses a bunch of aquariums that display local sealife. You can interact with animals with the help of some staff members. I believe I saw a sign that mentioned birthday parties, but I would call. It's $12 and change for adults and a little less for kids. The whole exhibit may take 1 to 1 1/2 hours to complete, but you could make the experience as long or short as you'd like. I highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: OH MY GOODNESS this place is amazing. So so many touch tanks that united guests of all ages. Maybe if we would all just learn to properly hold a horseshoe crab together the world would be a better place. Beautiful murals around the walls, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and all for an incredible price ($12). There were plenty of things to see and I left energized— not exhausted like I am after some bigger places. Cute gift shop so that you can get a little prize for being good with the fishies. Clean bathrooms and sinks available to wash hands after touching the fishies. Learned so much and had a blast. Will be coming back soon!!

Fantastic experience: This was a great afternoon activity. We (2 adults) had a couple hours to kill before a flight and decided to visit. The building is quite unassuming, looking much like where I would expect to find a small pet store or boutique. Inside there are many tanks and touch pools with a variety of local and tropical aquatic animals- most tropical animals waywardly made their way north and were caught/rescued and many others were rescued from owners who could no longer care for them. A highlight of the visit was the puffer fish demonstration. Feedings and demonstrations occur every 1/2 hour on weekends and school holidays. We visited for about 2 hours- though those with children may wish to stay longer. Admission was very resaonable.

Positive experience: Small place..can make your way through the area fairly quickly ..a bit disappointed with upkeep of some of the petting tanks..water looked so dirty that you don't want to put your hands in the water to pet anything....the scheduled exhibits are 5 to 10 minutes max..including questions and answers..it's more entertaining for smaller children..staff was not too knowledgeable about animals..they have restrooms and a gift shop with reasonable priced items for children including toys, stuffed animals, mystery bags, jewelry, keychains and zipper pulls, etc. Comforting to think that you are contributing to the well being of these animals otherwise it didn't seem worth the money. There are play areas for small children and other areas to sit, relax, read a book, play tic tac toe, uno, checkers, connect four, etc. A perfect place for a kindergarten field trip.

Fantastic experience: Really adorable touch tank aquarium. Totally decieveing from the outside because it's really big inside! There are tons of different set ups of different animals. Including touch tanks for sharks and sting rays and other animals. Kids had a good time. Spent about an hour doing most of what they had to offer.

Fantastic experience: Visiting Rhode Island from the UK to see family. Took our 5 year old grandson to the Center. Admission price was reasonable. The reception desk has laminated sheets providing times for feeding some of the wildlife during the afternoon. During feeding time, staff gave information on the creature being fed and it was nice that children were allowed to help with putting food into tanks. There were picnic tables indoor that contained Lego, connect 4 game, giant uno cards and plastic shapes that could be positioned on laminated drawings to make creatures. There was a small indoor play area as well as a small gift shop We thought that our visit would last about an hour when we first arrived as the venue is not too big. However, we spent 3 hours at Biomes and left with a really happy grandchild. This is worth a visit

Fantastic experience: I have been coming here every year with my kids for the past 5+ years and they have a blast every time. The staff is very nice and always taking the time to teach my kids about the different fish and animals they have. I’ll keep coming back until my kids outgrow it.

Fantastic experience: Been here twice with our 2 & 4 yr old. It’s understated from outside, but once u enter the world they’ve built you realize what a perfect size it is for toddlers / preschoolers. I remain fascinated by the facts / info they provide & our kids love the feeding of the tortoise / stingrays / bat rays / sharks / octopus etc. We easily spent 3 hrs here. A perfect activity for a rainy day… or any day.

Nadia 1 year ago

Negative experience: I’m glad I’m not the only one disturbed by the treatment of animals here. The poor small turtle was facing the back wall of his enclosure the whole time, the big turtle did the same. I would assume the little one has been treated poorly by kids who don’t know better because no one oversees the open enclosures. If youre going to have petting tanks then a worker should be there to ensure their animals are treated properly. A lot of the fish & sharks were coming to the surface of their tanks as if they were looking to be fed. The tanks were small and dirty. The green eel looks longer than its tank and just sits face up in the same position the whole time. The horseshoe crab and stingray tank was rusty. We didn’t see the ferret, it must have been hiding. It made me sad to see the animals. Come on guys, do better!

Bethany Stall 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: This place is amazing! There are touch tanks where you can feel the rays, skates, horseshoe crabs, spider crabs, and dogfish sharks! They have a listed schedule of feeding times that you can observe and even feed the bamboo sharks! The feedings also include seahorses and the octopus. They make puzzles for the octopus to open for their food, too! They also have an assortment of amphibians and reptiles. As well as a ferret! The employees are very passionate about the animals, and this shows in how helpful and knowledgeable they are. If they happen to be busy with others, every single animal has information at their tank as well! I loved going here for the first time and look forward to many trips in the future.

Positive experience: Really nice place. I've wanted to be a marine biologist since I was a child, but I never got to go to Biomes until I took my son last week. I never got to become a marine biologist due to disability. However, there were some concerning tank conditions and dead animals, which made us sad.

Katelyn Marie (topcleaning101) 1 year ago

Negative experience: The Entire ceiling is mold and water damage. This building is so toxic its not even funny. These aren't even the worst area's on the ceiling but I had to get out of there. My family and I had to leave almost immediately. I couldn't breathe and my whole family got extremely fatigued, including the children. The board of health needs to shut this place down. Its so sad because this place is awesome.

Fantastic experience: Throughout the years, I have taken all of my granddaughters here. It has never disappointed us. They have several petting displays where the kids can touch and feel different marine life. They also do different demonstrations and talks. If you are lucky enough to be there for the puffer fish show, don't miss it.

Fantastic experience: we weren’t sure what to expect walking in since the exterior doesn’t seem like there was much happening inside. not judging a book by its cover is definitely a rule of thumb. the location is easy to find and there was plenty of free parking. i believe it was about $12 per person, if i’m not mistaken. it certainly was less than you would pay at the zoo or aquarium which was really nice. all the workers here were super friendly. you can tell that they really enjoy being there and it seems more like a hobby than a “job”. they were extremely attentive and knowledgeable. we learned so much within a 3 hr span. i recall reading a review that did mention this. my seven year old was over the moon with all the selections of things they had available to do. it’s easy to navigate around and the directions or descriptions on every exhibit was crystal clear. some exhibits you were able to feel and feed the animals others were observation based. my son got to feed a horseshoe crab. it was unbelievably cool. we learned a ton of facts about them. we went on a saturday. so they had a bunch of live sessions with the kids. sophia and mariah lead them and were so great with the kids. as a homeschooler it’s a refreshing sight to see. my son rated his experience a 10/10. we can only rank a five star here but just know this is a really great experience. you won’t regret taking your children. especially if they love learning about animals. thank you so much sophia and mariah

Fantastic experience: I've driven past this place a million times. Looked like something boring. Went there with the grandkids on a rainy day. I was blown away. Very interesting. All the aquarium's had sand from different RI beaches. Giant tortise, sea ray pool, I could have spent hours there. I liked it better than the Boston Aquarium at a fraction of price and it's right in my backyard. It's a little gem.

Fantastic experience: This was kind of a fun, cute little place. They had quite a few different types of fish a good place to learn some things really good for any age but I think it’s better for little kids. But they also let us take a dog in which was amazing.

Kyle Lohr 2 years ago

Negative experience: Sick and neglected fish here, some tanks appear to be in bad condition and too small. The most horrifying thing is an exhibit/demonstration where they take a puffer fish out of the water and force it to puff up and spit water everywhere!! Incredibly stressful for the fish and who knows how often they force the poor things into doing this last resort defense mechanism. Do NOT recommend this place until they stop with the animal cruelty. Biomes Marine Biology Center you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Fantastic experience: What a great big open aquarium! Imo, this is so much nicer than the big popular aquariums! The staff are so friendly and patient! Highly recommend for a day trip or even bday parties. Hidden gem and easily accessible from many locations.

Fantastic experience: Such a fun place. We went for a birthday party with a 3yo and she enjoyed but adults had more fun for sure. The seahorses and mermaid purses were my favorite part. Cool place to check out for all ages.

Aaron Guilmy 2 years ago

Negative experience: They have a ferret in a cage by itself. As someone who works at a zoo this is not okay. The tanks were filthy with algae. I’m disappointed with the axolotl living conditions. It’s of the most beautiful and endangered creatures in the world and it’s on a filthy tank off to the side. After reading other reviews and seeing to owner’s response to them. He literally called people who have a right to be concerned idiots ,and says some nonsense about how it’s a cult with a leader who wants to boost a “Failed book” I also have concerns for the turtle Darwin because he was pacing back and forth across the inclosure. As a caretaker of a turtle it means the enclosure is too small.

Positive experience: Fun place to visit with young kids - lots of touch tanks, up close and personal with marine life. Kids are not always well supervised so it's loud and slightly chaotic but a fun place to spend an hour. Not as interesting for older kids/adults without kids.

Positive experience: Wasn't a big fan. Felt more like aquarium pet shop. It's awesome that they provide a kids' play area for smaller children 6 and under. Fish petting areas were great. The turtle they allow to wonder around the building is cute but stressful when you have a toddler. lol, my toddler wanted to touch it so much that I was stressed that an accident would occur. The place is small. You can never get lost. I pray some donor donates money to them so they can expand... I know a lot they do is apparently sea animals they have are all rescues. Good cause.

Sarah Webber 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Absolutely perfect for my 4.5 year old son. I got every cent of my $22 admission for the both of us. Plenty of interactive exhibits, overly friendly staff. My son is still talking about it. His only complaint is they didn't have a beluga whale, haha. Took about 2 hours but could easily be a shorter visit.

Fantastic experience: This place is like going into a Fish Store but way bigger and more diverse animals. You can’t buy any of them but you can look and even touch a lot of them. All rescued off the RI coastline and even doing some Conservation. Great for Kids.

Fantastic experience: This is a great place to bring kids and adults - great exhibition of marine life, plenty of petting and feeding experience, lots of information and fun in one package. Honestly I didn't expect that they would fit so much in so little space. They had 5 or 6 feedings scheduled every 30 min.

Fantastic experience: It is fantastic, a place for adults and children to interact with some fish, a large turtle is the center of attention, there is a space for children to read, play with boats...

Fantastic experience: 2 years of family membership. Great place for kids! Not crowded; they get to spend as much time as they want and get right up to the tanks. Great touch tanks, and the extra materials, toys, puzzles, books, etc make for some fun interactions!

Fantastic experience: So nice to see Darwin at the new Biomes location. So much else to see and they do demonstrations too! We watched them feeding the pufferfish, so cool.

Fantastic experience: So wonderful! They thoughtfully designed the place for kids. The hand washing station next to the bathroom has 3 different height sinks for little ones! There's also a large area with indoor picnic tables for you to eat your own snacks. I like that the place is small. It makes it less overwhelming as a parent.

Fantastic experience: The place is a lot bigger on the inside...I know, that is physically impossible but it just is. I suspect that they use the same alien technology that Dr. Who uses. They did a great birthday party for our daughter. Most of the arrangements were made by my wife and I really have no idea how much it cost but were we not entertained? They don't really gouge you on the things they sell and they're a great community resource. Great place. Check them out.

Fantastic experience: Took my youngest daughter when she was little (even to the original location). This past weekend, I brought my granddaughter for the first time. She had fun looking at the various fish. Got to watch the new octopus get fed. And she loved Darwin. Always changing variety of fish based on what's caught in the area.

Positive experience: It's a decent place to take your kids to learn a little bit about marine biology. My grandson's 4th birthday was there, they do a nice job with areas where the kids can touch and feed the critters.

Fantastic experience: We've been visiting this establishment for about 5 years, it's a fantastic place for all, kids are encouraged to visit. Theres so much to explore and learn but it's not overwhelming. Touch tanks are a hit. You can witness feedings and Darwin getting exercise. My kids love the scavenger hunts. A variety of learning opportunities. Picnic tables and hand washing stations are convenient. Gift certificates are excellent to give and recieve!
