We've always had great customer service and we usually find what we are looking for. The animals are a little higher in price than the popular pet stores but the quality and variety is definitely worth it. I'm always seeing something new and interesting! 10/10 recommend!

Negative experience: (I’m only a customer for aquatics) Important notes, they don’t quarantine their fish to my knowledge, they get them in on Tuesdays then put them directly out on display to be purchased. Also after you leave the store they will no longer be in charge of the fish and you won’t get a refund. The people in charge are nice and helpful. Tips- If you are buying fish buy on Friday-Monday to avoid fish that were injured in shipping and died a day or two after. My experience- They are kind and helped me get what I needed, their prices are good and they have a decent selection, I got 6 galaxy rasboras and 5 lived, I bought on a Wednesday so they were only at their store for a day also the tank they were in had multiple dead galaxies in it.

Negative experience: Their frozen brine shrimp gave just my fish Camallanus parasites and practically ruined my 300+ dollar tank. Previously I bought 3 albino corycats and 8 rummynose tetras, 2/3 corycats and 4/8 tetras died within 48hours. This is by far the worst fish shop in the area, I’m never coming back and warning everyone I know thats in the hobby to avoid this place at all costs

Fantastic experience: My wife and I have been multiple times and have never had a problem. Their selection is phenomenal!! We find Andy to be VERY knowledgeable and his advice has been most helpful. Our seastar and snails are super active this morning and appear to be happy in their new home. Thank you Andy for the great deal and service. We will be back and will recommend to everyone.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I have been coming here for about a year for our geckos and to see the wonderful birds they have. I love the lil guy who greeted everyone who walked in the door. They have the largest selection of any pet store that I've been to. All of the animals and habitats look very well taken care of and happy.

Fantastic experience: If you are looking for an exotic bird, a fish for your aquarium, reptiles, amphibious or even arachnids this is the right place for you.

Negative experience: I saw the veiled chameleon you guys are asking 250 for. That poor guy needs serious vet attention. You should be ashamed of yourselves trying to sell people sick reptiles passing them off to the next person for a fee without getting them any type of veteran help is outrageous. Seriously what type of establishment are you running here? God only knows how many sick exotics you've sold to the unknowing public. It's sicking hopefully people see this and it inspires them to do business elsewhere. Hopefully the chameleon gets the treatment it deserves and you all get what you deserve as well.

Negative experience: ANIMAL ABUSE! It’s unbelievable that you’re trying to sell this clearly sick chameleon for 250$. His enclosure is a joke and is causing him even more health issues. If people who work there are heartless enough to look at this poor creature everyday and try to benefit from his suffering I DO NOT RECOMMEND buying animals from this place! Some people might not be aware but this is a VERY SICK reptile which is a horrible sign because who knows what other pets are also in these kind of health conditions

Fantastic experience: Reptiles, fish, birds, and bunnies. Sometimes they carry ferrets and cats. Friendly staff and solid selection of pet gear. I really enjoyed the variety of fish for this size of shop.

Negative experience: Reoccurringly displays sick reptiles for purchase. Animals that are clearly emaciated or have obvious necrotic tissue on their limbs. Husbandry is also poor for being reptile "experts" The only thing I'd recommend from here is fish or feeders. They do not take sick animals to the vet I have followed up with a clearly sick lizard for a few weeks now and they take health into there own hands vs a professional. Use caution with purchases! :(

Positive experience: Gotta watch out for the price they. Ll sneak a few extra bucks out of ya thinking I wouldn't notice $16 the first time I figured it was a honest mistake but went back and hit me with $12 they don't like to refund you so they offer another fish

Fantastic experience: A leader in the community for years! By far the largest selection of fresh and salt water fish I have seen around. Staff have always been friendly and prices seem a little better than some other local fish stores. I’ve been a customer for around 8 years now, and I’ll continue to for years to come.

Negative experience: There was a sick bunny there and we told an employee and he said "there was nothing he could do". While when a bunny is sick you can't do much on your own you could at least take it to a vet! It was a bad experience and I felt so bad for the bunny!

Positive experience: If you want to buy a monitor they are the place to get one - they take their exotics to a vet - hanging rock animal hospital- they allow pets ( exotics ) to free roam. Purchased a sav about a year ago doesn’t seem to have any issues - parasites/ gout or any bone disease. They do offer to hold and purchase an animal for you. Let’s say that you want a black throat they will order online and make sure that is ok at time of purchase.

Positive experience: 9/12/2024 Update: Came in today on a whim and spoke at length with Matthew in the aquatic section. He was extremely knowledgeable and right to the point which I greatly appreciate. He helped walk me to each tank showing me all the cool stuff they had and discussed his own tanks at home. I ended up leaving with about 5 fish total and some new food Matthew had suggested. Will definitely be back again. Matthew needs an “atta boy” and pat on the back for sure as he completely changed my opinion of the establishment. (I am not the Matthew I am writing about) Original 1 star review: I was in need of some aquarium supplies and decided to shop local instead of at a big box store. I started off looking at the freshwater fish and right off the bat I see a tank full of dead guppies. Nothing out of the normal. The fish selection is decent and the living fish seem pretty happy. I collect my item and go to the front. No one is at the register and I hadn’t seen anyone there when I entered the store many minutes prior. My wife and I stand there for what felt like 5 minutes until I decided to just place my item on the counter and walk off. I ended up buying everything I needed from Amazon the second I got in my car.

Fantastic experience: We recently visited for the first time. We were out of crickets for our leopard gecko. We were wowed. My kids didn't want to leave. They have a wonderful selection of supplies, animals to purchase and just to look at. For example, they have a toucan. I have never seen one before. The staff was friendly and helpful and they sell adorable stuffed animals. We picked up a stuffed tarantula, a stuffed leopard gecko and a stuffed bearded dragon.

Positive experience: A large variety of fish, both fresh and salt water, supplies, food, tanks etc. Also a good selection of birds and bird supplies. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Positive experience: 5/27/24 Left my bird (SunConure) Again I can’t stop praising this place! Worker is caring and loving on my bird ! I call almost every day and they take time out of their business to go to my bird so I can talk to him. When I pick up my bird , he is happy to see me, he always look good not stressed or sad . Thank you again ! 3/12/23 I bring my Bird to Be watch for a period of time They COVER my bird Baby AT Night At my request So he can feel like he is home When I pick him up He doesn’t look Stressed because he was there - he Is Loved - All the workers watch after Him Andy keeps trying to hold him and he Loves him even after Baby Bites him. Negative experience: I have purchased a pice of drift wood and it Floats. I called for advice on what I need to do to get it not to float I spoke to a person on the phone saying he was really busy. Didn't have time for my call very rude. They need to learn how to take care of their customers. Management needs the better training. It's a shame a local business. Is this sorry

Negative experience: It pains me to write this review for Exotics and Aquatics, a place my fiancé and I once cherished, particularly from interacting with the birds. Despite the frequent turnover of staff, we persevered in building relationships with each new face, embracing the store as our therapy place. Our journey with Exotics and Aquatics led us to explore new hobbies, such as maintaining salt and freshwater fish tanks, a passion that saw us invest thousands of dollars in supplies and marine life/ coral. However, our recent experiences have left us disillusioned and disheartened. Having purchased four birds from the store, including a green cheek conure, a cockatiel, a budgie, and a red rump parakeet, we initially encountered issues with the cockatiel, which appeared lethargic and sick, only to discover its coloring was artificial. Despite receiving store credit for this mishap, our faith in the store began to wane. Our latest acquisition, a Red-rump parakeet advertised as "9-MONTH OLD / HAND RAISED," proved to be the breaking point. Despite observing the bird's deteriorating condition over three months, we were denied any discount upon expressing interest in purchasing it. Ignoring our reservations, we paid full price for him and took him home. Early on, we noticed that the bird exhibited an unusual level of extreme skittishness and fear of humans, behaviors contradicting the hand-raised status. Drawing on our experience as seasoned bird owners, we initially attributed this behavior to a need for extra time to acclimate to its new environment. However, after two weeks passed with no signs of improvement and the bird's distress escalated to the point of self-injury (erratically flight and bumping into the cage breaking feathers) from minor sounds and movements, we realized the severity of the situation. Our concerns were further compounded when we contacted the store, only to be informed that the bird had been acquired from “a breeder" and was supposedly a year and a half old—information directly conflicting with the signage's claims. It became increasingly apparent that we had been misled not only regarding the bird's age but also its upbringing, casting doubt on the integrity of the store's practices. It has been about a month now, the bird remains terrified of everything, including the simplest things like the fruit in his bowl, which startles him. His fear has led to numerous accidents, with broken feathers and self-inflicted injuries from his frantic attempts to escape perceived threats. Rather than enjoying his presence, we find ourselves constantly on edge, trying to prevent anything from spooking him further. Regrettably, our interactions with him have been nonexistent; we are unable to touch or bond with him in any meaningful way. Furthermore, adding to the challenges, this bird, accustomed to a poor only-seed diet, refuses anything else. This refusal, combined with the absence of a leg band, intensifies our concerns about his background and neglect. This, coupled with the store's deceit regarding his age and hand-raising, has left us deeply disheartened. We never would have chosen an older bird (I know now this bird must be older than the new age given over the phone) with such profound fear and aversion to human contact had we known the truth from the beginning. The $360 we paid for him now feels like a steep price for the distress he has caused us. Despite our years loyalty, fond memories, significant monetary investments, and willingness to overlook the store's reputation, we can no longer recommend Exotics and Aquatics. The cumulative impact of our experiences, not just with this bird but with other issues as well, has eroded our trust completely. The blatant dishonesty regarding the bird's age, upbringing, and temperament has not only caused us financial strain but has also robbed us of the joy and companionship we sought. In addition, their strict no-return policy has left us feeling trapped with a pet that was misrepresented to us. It's a bitter realization after investing so much time and money into this store.

Negative experience: Most people are helpful but it only takes one to give the place a bad reputation. Short guy with glasses very poor at responding to questions. Very vague answers guess I should research on Google.

Fantastic experience: 9 rats later Exotics & Aquatics is still my to go place. This is Charlotte that I got about a month ago. She was a feeder rat.

Negative experience: Disappointed. Saltwater selection looks neglected. Their showtanks are pristine, but the buyable livestock is poorly kept in algae / aptasia ridden tanks. I used to buy a lot from this company but their saltwater standards are in rapid decline. I take no joy in leaving reviews like this, but we’re talking about the living conditions of livestock. Hopefully they can do better.

Fantastic experience: Huge selection of items and all types of animals. Everything looked well cared for. I stopped there to purchase frozen juvenile rats for my snake. They had them in stock and the quality was fine. Price was better than some other places.

Positive experience: Staff was friendly and helpful. Aquarium section was great with a lot to choose from. My only negatives were that there were bird droppings all over the floor in that section, and there were a lot of dropping in the rabbit cages. It was late in the afternoon so they may have not been cleaned yet.

Fantastic experience: Reptiles, exotic birds and fish and a large selection of unusual pets. Tarantulas, lizards large and small, scorpions, snakes, indoor and outdoor fish supplies and a wide variety of fish to put in your very own dream collection. Rabbits, gerbils, etc. And everything you need to keep all your pets happy and healthy. It's worth your time to just go see all of them. Beware though, they are hard to resist. I can attest to this myself.

Negative experience: I live in Raleigh and was in town so I stopped by to check out the salt water portion of their store. Coral prices are laughably high and fish prices seem to be all over the place. Plenty of selection fish wise.

Positive experience: The fish department has a lot of variety you won't find at a chain pet store, but the care and handling is a bit lacking. Regularly see fish for sale with ich and mislabeled or over/under priced species which leads me to question sourcing and ethics. Also regularly see baby shovelnose/redtail catfish, alligator gar, etc, so I hope they're making sure these monster fish go to appropriate homes. The other departments seem a bit more polished, and the product selection in the fish section is also outstanding. They sell live and frozen food for reptiles and fish, and have a lot of basics for setup of birds, herps, and small mammals. Tons of driftwood and rocks to choose from, as well as a good variety of aquarium equipment and water treatments. Fun to stop in from time to time to look even if you don't need anything, just be sure you know what you're looking for and do your own research beforehand.

Fantastic experience: I took my toddlers in to see their cousin working. They loved seeing the different animals and even holding the tiny boa!!

Positive experience: I think this place does things about half right. Their reptile, tarantula, etc area looks great. The enclosures over there look well kept and enriching which is unusual in a pet store. However, I think they could stand to improve greatly in their small mammal care. The bedding used for the rats & other small mammals is extremely dusty. It‘s well known that they are highly susceptible to respiratory disease and there are many bedding options out there to reduce the chance of illness while still being easy to clean. The first time i went there they had two cages housing extra large rats with hides about half their body size. They also don't have hides for any of their rabbits (at least the few times i've been there they didn't). I found this problematic due to how sensitive rabbits can be. They are 100% a prey animal and can decide to stop eating at any small change in their environment. So putting them in a place with a revolving door of people/other animals and nowhere to escape to is a little frustrating to observe. In terms of customer service, I’ve never had an issue. I don’t get approached by anyone usually (which as an introvert I actually prefer) and when I ask for help the staff is friendly. All in all I think they are better than many locally owned exotic pet stores I have seen but definitely have areas where they could stand to improve. Fantastic experience: I drove over an hour to purchase a scorpion. The staff were all friendly and seemed to truly care about the animals. The parrots we're exceptionally fun to interact with.

Positive experience: They walked me through my first aquarium and helped me troubleshoot our terrible tap water. I brought in water samples and we figured out I needed a ph buffer. My fish are doing so well and I couldn’t have done it without their knowledge.

Fantastic experience: We have watched them expand and grow over the years and it keeps getting better. Most of the time I go in I have had excellent experiences with people who really want to see the animals well cared for and if they dont have what you are looking for they know where to get it.

Fantastic experience: After our beloved betta fish passed away, I knew I didn’t want to shop at a big box pet store for a new fish. The tanks at this shop are kept *immaculate* and even the little bettas in cups are all healthy and beautiful. Good selection of males and females. If you are shopping for a fish, accessories, reptiles or even a tarantula or millipede (!) this is the only place to go. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We are so grateful they are here!! Edit: I am a woman of color and I was treated with nothing but respect by the staff here. I think once they knew I was a knowledgeable hobbyist, they were more than willing to share their expertise with me.

Negative experience: They have lots of pets ready to be adopted. They could be a lot more prompt when customers are requesting to handle an animal that is up for adoption. The employees in the fish / aquatics department are not very friendly , not eager to assist customers , they are busy having personal conversations .

Fantastic experience: A lot of exotic animals, many that are not seen in pet stores. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They had a Toucan, which I had never seen. A large variety of different animals, very fun trip!

Fantastic experience: I'm liking the new location, looks like they're still setting it up a little bit, but still has a lot of promise. We just purchased a gecko while on vacation, and we're quite pleased, it's very healthy and happy. A lovely reptile/inverts section in an otherwise fairly under-served market area for that sort of thing, so hopefully they'll do well with that. They already have a better selection that some specialist reptile stores I've been in, as they don't seem to focus more on snakes and bearded dragons like most places, rather they have a good mix. I loved the big ol Rhino Iguana and the BW Tegu, very nice critters, and always glad to be able to see them up close like this, even if I can't afford them! One day!

Negative experience: Absolutely disgusting that staff here assaulted a customer over a refund less than $10. If you are a proud American you will not support them. It's wrong for a man to hit a woman, but apparently the owner doesn't believe that. Very wrong.

Positive experience: Even though I'm not a fan of animals in cages, I did enjoy interacting with the birds here. The big white one by the door was hilarious! They have bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, tons of fish, snakes, tarantulas, lizards, and of course the birds. They have several different types of big birds there, too. Also, lots of aquariums & a bunch of other pet accessories. It's a rather clean looking establishment, and it's a decent size for what it is.

Negative experience: I was excited to go to the shop since I was already in the area wanting to find some fish for a new tank I got. Unfortunately, all the fish did have ick and the staff didn’t provide any help or answered my questions regarding their selection. Unfriendly or just plain uninterested staff for new customers it seems? I would just go somewhere else.

Fantastic experience: Unique pet store in the Roanoke Valley. Beautiful dogs and kittens. I am not a snake person but a great selection as well as spiders, bearded Dragons and more. The aquatics section is mesmerizing. Words can't describe how beautiful the saltwater section looks.

Fantastic experience: Staff seemed extremely knowledgeable and not bothered a bit by my 2 million questions about 10 different species. All three staff members that helped me all have multiple animals at home and were eager to give me their experience with each one and the do's and don'ts and costs of each one as well.

They also will teach your children how to care for the pets they are about to adopt. And will try to ansewer any questions that you have.I would definitely recommend them 100%

Positive experience: I went out looking for tree frogs and lizards I did find two red eyed tree frogs but not the right type of lizard but I will check back.

Fantastic experience: The animals are exceptionally well kept, the staff are clearly passionate, knowledgeable and very attentive, and the product selection was fairly impressive. I highly recommend making the trip, even if its not around the corner from you. An awesome little spot!

Fantastic experience: Went to get some food for my bearded dragon. They have a large selection in regards to food for him as well as other exotic animals. The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They have birds out that talk to you come in, and sometimes you can get the snakes out and handle them. Plenty of choices for fish both salt and fresh. Awesome store with great people!
