🗣️ Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine: Reviews
Positive experience: Fun place for kids… I’d avoid going during peak business hours a lot of parents let their kids run free and use the place as a babysitter.
Thank you so much for this positive review, Liv. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great place to bring your young ones to enjoy many different areas of play. Outside play area with sand, jungle gym, and music. Inside so much to explore! Water play area, interactive learning, and theater. They are all about STEM! And it is amazing! Check out their website for more information. They have an elevator and stairs. They have picnic tables outside near the outdoor play area. Many benches to sit on for parents to relax as they watch their children. Restrooms on each floor.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Positive experience: Excellent staff and a great array of exhibits! My daughter is 4 and had a wonderful time on the summer afternoon that we visited (Wednesday), particularly in the Maker Space. The only two issues we had were that 1) A number of the exhibits weren’t working properly, like balls getting stuck in the air play area, the periscope not working, etc., and 2) The 3 hour time block for an afternoon visit is really not anywhere near enough time to explore. My daughter spent an hour in the Maker Space and could have easily spent an hour in the water play area, but only had about 30 minutes after we got there before closing.
Negative experience: Spent 40 bucks to watch my 7yo play with a water table.... I think I could have bought a new one for 60 bucks at walmart.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your visit didn’t meet expectations. We are especially surprised to hear your child didn’t enjoy Go With The Flow—our water play exhibit is typically one of our most beloved experiences for children of all ages. We would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about your visit and explore how we might improve. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] or call 207-828-1234. We would love to hear from you.
Negative experience: Not super impressed, parking was difficult and poorly marked during the busy summer season. Walked quite a ways only to come back to our car with a parking ticket. Exhibits were meh and a couple exhibits were undergoing repairs. Not the best value for the flat-rate price you pay.
Thank you for taking the time to review and we are so sorry you got a parking ticket. Thompson's Point manages the parking around our building. We recommend reaching out to share your parking experience by emailing [email protected]. You can also find more information on the ticket itself. Thank you for your feedback about your space. We would love to hear more about your experience. Please email [email protected] or call 207-828-1234.
Fantastic experience: Really cute museum. Very well thought out and nice floor planning. The bathrooms were very kid friendly. I never understood why children oriented museums would have super tall sinks. Small enough to do pretty much everything in a morning (and honestly your kids are overstimulated by then anyway). But their play areas are definitely enjoyable if there's extra energy to bring. Be sure to bring your own food, there isn't a cafeteria.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Took my great niece and nephew. They loved it. So much to see and do. So many other kids and adults too. Some times too many
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words, Karen. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great place to pass time and wear out children. Some great displays. The staff was excellant.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words, Kay. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic children's museum. Some of the best hands on exhibits I've seen and a great maker space for kids to craft and build
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words, Glenn. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: This children’s museum is really good, when adults have fun too, it says it all about the place that’s meant to be for kids. Hope to go there again soon
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words, Dustin. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: We had such a great time, we bought a membership. The grandkids love the water exploration and the lobster boat area the most. I can see the membership getting used at least once a week during the summer. All the activities were engaging and the staff in the aquarium area were top notch.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words, Lori. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM (and that you're now members!), and we look forward to seeing you all again soon!
Fantastic experience: my family stopped in to the museum half way through our 6 hour trip home. i always pass it when i'm driving through ME and think my kids would love it. it's $20 per person, kids and adults - infants are free. there's timed entries, purchasing tickets ahead of time are recommended but not necessary. we went at 12 on a Sunday in June- absolutely no line, not terribly busy. there's an outdoor area with a playscape, some shade, benches, sand box, etc. there's elevators and stairs, bathrooms on each floor, nursing stations, some snacks for purchase, as well as stuffies. there's water play on the 3rd floor- bring a smock or extra clothes just in case! worth a visit, you can walk nextdoor to Bissell Brothers for lunch and a drink! kid friendly.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and kind words, MaKayla. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you all again soon!
Fantastic experience: It was a rainy weekend and we brought boulevard kids to this museum. We have a 2 and 1/2-year-old and a 14-month-old. We went as soon as they opened on a Saturday which I think was important so that the crowds were a little bit less. There are multiple floors for exploring. On the second floor there was even a workshop where our son was able to build a boat out of recycled items. We were even able to take it home. On the third floor there was a little aquarium with turtles and fish that are kids loved. We will absolutely be going back.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Ian. We are delighted to hear that your family enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Positive experience: We had a great time but you shouldn’t only allow people to stay for three hours and then close exhibits for schools. Especially without announcing it anywhere. So that was disappointing. And then the time was changed to being closed for an extra 15 minutes.
Thank you for visiting, Ashley. We're delighted to hear that you had a great time at CMTM. We appreciate your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the experience for all visitors. Should you wish to provide further details of your visit, please get in touch with us at [email protected]. We hope you'll visit us again in the future!
Negative experience: Over priced. Adults just pay for nothing I feel!. How huge that place is it should have much more! No food or drinks.
Nova, we so value your feedback. Should you like to share more about your visit and what aspects you feel could be improved, we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to hear your thoughts. Should the cost of a visit be prohibitive, we offer a range of discounts, from a AAA discount (10%) to our Museums for All discount ($1 admission). Those details can be found on our Plan Your Visit page here: https://www.kitetails.org/plan-your-visit. Also, a Membership can be a great option and pays for itself within 3-4 visits. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 207-828-1234 or [email protected]. We do have snacks available for purchase at the front desk, and have areas where guests are welcome to enjoy food and beverage (either purchased at CMTM or brought from home) throughout the museum and outside on the Gather lawn and in the Outdoor Adventure Playground. We hope to have you back for more play soon!
Positive experience: Went on 5/18 and the water section was closed. My 4 year old LOVES water and was very disappointed. He got bored without it. I wish they would have made a post on Facebook or the website that it was down.
Thank you so much, Jennifer! We are thrilled to hear that you and your family had a fantastic experience at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: This place is SO much fun! My 2.5 year old loves it. The water table is by far his favorite.
Thank you so much for this five-star review, Esley! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Fantastic experience: This place is super cool! Lots of different things to do. We like the water play best. Bring a dry shirt!
Thank you so much for this five-star review, Melanie! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Our 2 year old had so much fun here. There seemed to be a good range of things to do for her age plus or minus a year or two
Thank you so much for this five-star review, Mike! We're delighted to hear that your family enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Lovely little place! Staff is always super friendly and there is enough to do for a few hours with kids of all ages. If you’re going to go more than a couple times a year, I highly recommend the membership! : It’s great for all ages but babies and toddlers specifically will love the second floor. There is a soft play area & on the third floor, a light room and water play area! ️: is a PITA. If you get there early enough or go on a not busy day, it’s fine BUT most days, the parking lot is pretty full in front. However, there is plenty of parking behind/close by. Parking is extra $$ though. I think it’s like $2/hr or something. It’s way easier with the Passport app. They will ticket you if you don’t pay! : There is a nice little outdoor playground with benches, a sand pit, slides, and climbing structure.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Erica. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Fun time with our 4 year old grand daughters. They loved the water room and the light room.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Jennifer. We're so glad to hear that your granddaughters loved their time at CMTM, especially the Go with the Flow and Illuminate exhibits. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: My Grandchildren enjoy the place so much . perfect school break Activities . They have different stages of earth life. so eduvational for them❤️❤️❤️ Feb 25
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Czerny. We're delighted to hear that you and your grandchild enjoy visiting CMTM. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Positive experience: Parking should be free. Out of the city center Plenty of space. No reason to have families pay on top of the entry fee
Thank you for visiting CMTM, Catherine! Parking is owned and operated by Thompson's Point, and is independent from the Museum & Theatre. Should you like to discuss your visit in further detail, please contact us at [email protected]. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again soon.
Fantastic experience: it’s a fun place for my kids and I just love it
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Amal. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: If you ever get a chance to come to Portland Maine, make sure to stop by the children’s museum! You will not be disappointed. There are so many wonderful activities for the kids and it will really keep them occupied for a while! Also, Morning Moose Coffee comes by on occasion to serve top tier Coffee, lattes, and you don’t want to miss their fresh mini Donuts!
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Dan. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great place to bring kids! Best deal is to get the membership, as they have different activities every week. The stand alone games are great, you can be sure your kids will always enjoy. 3 floors of activities, each with there own theme. I will definetly bring back a day they have a STEM workshop.
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Roberto. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Positive experience: It was just ok. The space is extremely tight and there were too many kids in our time slot which made it a bit more stressful than fun. The best part was the outdoor section as the kids could spread out. Overall the place is very clean and the staff is nice, but I prefer the Dover NH Children's Museum.
Thank you for visiting, Wade. We appreciate your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the experience for all visitors. Should you wish to provide further details of your visit, please get in touch with us at [email protected]. We hope you'll visit us again in the future!
Fantastic experience: Such a great place for kids of all ages! We had such a fun day! We brought extra clothes in preparation for the water area and Iwas very glad we did! We will absolutely be back in the future!
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Jenna. We hope to see you again soon!
Negative experience: It wasn't as great as I thought it would be. Not much for the children and the prices were unbelievable. Especially the adult prices. I mean seriously what do the adults do other than watch their children. And it wasn't half as good as when my daughter was a little girl. Just saying
Francesca, we so value your feedback. Fantastic experience: One of the best children's museums
Thank you so much for this five-star review and your kind words, Victoria. We hope to see you again soon!
Negative experience: Excellent new space. They do engage in covid masking theater for children against basic science regarding cloth/loose masks, but aren't jerks about it. Really glad to have them in the area.
Hi Bren, we are so glad you enjoy the new space! Thanks for the five star review.
Fantastic experience: Had an amazing time with my 2 boys. And if you have ebt DO NOT skip out on saving 17 dollars. It makes it $1 per person with you which obviously makes it a super affordable fun and educational thing to do with your kids. There's so much to do well have to come back and do more!! Also The staff was amazing and let my kids leave slowly as to not get upset they were closing. 10/10 visit
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that you and your boys had such a positive experience at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. It’s fantastic that you were able to take advantage of our Museums for All discount, supported by the Lunder Foundation, and found it to be both fun and educational. Our team strives to create a welcoming environment for all visitors, and we're glad to know they made your family's visit special. We look forward to welcoming you back for more adventures!
Fantastic experience: We visited with our family and it was such a great time. There are plenty of activities and you could spend a few hours here easy. The staff was really accommodating and helpful when we asked questions. Great spot for families.
Thank you so much for the 5 star review, Anthony! We're glad to hear you and your family had a great time. We hope you'll visit again.
Positive experience: Could be really great! Although it was REALLY dirty when we went last week. The Lego blocks in the water area were molding, the puppets were so dirty they were turning brown, and the light room had some really gross spots on the carpet
Gwen, thank you for sharing your feedback. We take cleanliness and maintenance very seriously, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We’re happy to share that we’ve just completed a deep cleaning of the carpets and the water play area, including all the Lego blocks. As for our puppets, they are some of the most well-loved props in our space! Because they are washed frequently to ensure they remain hygienic for all guests, they may appear more worn than home toys. We retire them regularly, balancing freshness with sustainability to minimize unnecessary waste. We are always working to provide the best possible experience for our visitors, and we welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns further. Please feel free to reach out to us at 207-828-1234 or [email protected]. We hope to welcome you back for more play soon!
Fantastic experience: The Children’s Museum of Maine is absolutely fabulous! It’s thoughtfully designed with engaging, hands-on exhibits for kids of all ages, and there’s even a dedicated space just for ages 0-3, which is perfect for little ones to explore safely. Every exhibit encourages creativity, play, and learning—from water play areas to interactive theater experiences. The staff is friendly and the space is clean, bright, and inviting. It’s a must-visit for families looking for a fun, enriching experience in Portland!
Thanks so very much for your kind words and five star review, Christi. Reviews like this one make all of us at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine excited to come to work each day. Thank you also for highlighting many aspects of the building, exhibits, and attention to detail that go into making the museum & theatre a space for all children to belong and for their imaginations to soar. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!
Fantastic experience: Fun time with my 2 year old grandson. It was rather crowded in the climbing area but plenty of other activities for him.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Christine. We're delighted to hear that you and your grandson had a fun time exploring the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We appreciate your feedback regarding the climbing area and are glad that you found plenty of other activities to enjoy. Please note that weekdays and afternoons tend to be our queitest for visitation. Highest visitation is during rainy weather, weekends, and school breaks. Your insights are valuable to us, and we hope to see you again for more memorable moments.

Positive experience: Great place to bring your kids. Think they could change the exhibits from time to time and maybe update them. But overall a good experience
Thank you, George, for sharing your thoughts with us. We’re delighted to hear that you and your kids had a great time at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We appreciate your feedback regarding the exhibits and will take your suggestions into consideration as we strive to create engaging and enriching experiences for all our visitors. Fantastic experience: Took my son today he is 9 and he has so much fun! He especially liked the water area and the tubes.
Thank you so much for this five-star review, Jennifer! We are delighted to hear that you and your son had a great experience at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Really impressed with the theater and the options for kids, especially the water table on the third floor
Thank you so much, Laura! We are delighted to hear that you had a great experience at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine, and that you enjoyed Maddy's Theatre so much. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great place for kids to explore and learn through play. We have gone multiple times and my kids still get so excited when we discuss another visit. At 8 and 10, they still really enjoy going.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Megan! We are thrilled to hear that your children continue to enjoy their visits to CMTM. It's always wonderful to see kids excited about learning through play. We look forward to welcoming you back for another fun-filled visit soon!
Positive experience: This children’s museum offers a ray of make believe, fun crafts and ways to get energy out. They have area for kids under the age of 8 and an area the lighthouse which is for 2yo and younger (meant for non crawlers). They have a small aquarium and huge water table area. Great place to go to in the winter. Downfalls, kids get soaked at the water table area even with apron on. Bring a change of clothes. The space is very tight so when busy no strollers can fit and you are on top of one another. Wish there was more space as it’s defiantly tight inside. Another downfall is you must pay to park. Communal area to put jackets and bags but no lockers. Very easy to steal belongings. Also no food or drink allowed so makes it difficult for the bottle kiddos.
Thank you for your thoughtful review, Stephanie, and for sharing your experience at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine. We’re so glad you and your family enjoyed all three floors of CMTM's imaginative play spaces, including MakerSpace, From the Mountains to the Sea (Aquarium), and the Water Play exhibit—especially during the winter when indoor fun is so important. We appreciate your feedback and want to clarify that CMTM does not operate or manage parking. However, we understand that it can be a consideration for visitors. While we have had no reports of stolen belongings, and our guests are typically very respectful, we always encourage visitors to keep personal items secure while enjoying their time with us. Food and drink are also permitted on the 1st and 3rd floors, and a small selection of snacks is available at our welcome desk. If you're looking for a quieter playtime, we recommend visiting on weekday afternoons, as mornings—especially on weekends and during rainy weather—tend to be our busiest times. We truly appreciate your review. If you’d like to discuss anything further, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 207-828-1234 or [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming you back for more play soon!
Positive experience: Extremely crowded with lots of sick children. Parent's not keeping an eye on their kids or giving direction. Lots of hands in mouths and then touching displays. The exhibit rooms are very small and cramped with little to no room to check things out without having to squeeze by families. The last time we tried to come here they were at capacity with signs alerting guests prior to entering, so we postponed. However not sure how today was much different. Perhaps this place is better on a weekday and not over holiday break.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, Jarrod. We value all feedback as it helps us improve and provide the best experiences for our visitors. If you're looking for a quieter visit time, we recommend weekday afternoons, especially when school is in session. Our busiest times are weekends, holidays, school vacations, and days with inclement weather. Should you like to discuss your visit in further detail, please contact us at [email protected]. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again soon!
Fantastic experience: My kids (1 & 3) have been enjoying the museum for the past year or so. We hit nearly every spot each time we go (my son has an agenda!). Pros: The staff are such kind people (truly an understatement, they are amazing) and there are plenty of options to have a full couple hours. We have the annual pass so it’s best for us to go on non-weekend days so there is plenty of space for my shy kids to feel excited and comfortable, and they do! It’s a great change of pace from being home or at their school. Cons: You do have to pay for parking but it’s only $4 for the entire visit and so easy to deal with. Visits can get challenging or we cut them short if there are field trips there (especially with older kids) which make my littles nervous and me feel that they are unsafe, I also have seen some boogery kids there and wish there was a way to hold parents accountable for not bringing sick kids to the museum.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, Elizabeth! We are delighted to hear that your family enjoys your visits to CMTM, and we especially appreciate your kind words about our staff. We look forward to seeing you all again soon!
Negative experience: There are a lot of fun things for kids to do. 3 floors of different activities, a playground and an indoor playground. The reason for not giving a 5 star is 1) you have to pay to park, around $5 or more, each visit. 2) We've visited at least 6 times, and every single time, I kids are sick the next day. We wash hands after playtime, before eating, etc.. I've never had an issue like this at a playground or museum before. This leads me to believe a) their sanitation is poor and needs to be dramatically improved. b) parents often bring sick kids there. We have a new membership, but I highly doubt we'll be back. The sickness afterwards isn't worth it.
Zachary, we sincerely appreciate your valuable insights on your visit to the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine and your support as a member. Ensuring the safety of our guests is a top priority for our team. Since we opened during the height of the pandemic, our cleaning protocols were meticulously crafted with the health and safety of our guests in mind. CMTM is professionally cleaned with CDC-recommended products each night after closing, including disinfecting all high-touch areas, including door handles, knobs, elevator buttons, and stair rails. Staff clean high-touch areas, props, and toys throughout the day, using CDC-recommended products. Bathroom facilities and visitor amenities like snack areas and Nursing Nook are cleaned throughout the day (frequency depends on visitation numbers). CMTM staff and professional cleaning team conduct deep cleaning on Tuesdays when the facility is closed to the public. Additionally, we ask if children or caregivers are feeling unwell, they consider staying home. We take great pride in the care and maintenance of our building and the well-being of our visitors. However, we are always open to learning and improving. If you would be willing to share more details about your experience, we would greatly appreciate it. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected], and a member of our Visitor Engagement team will be happy to connect with you. Thank you again for your support and feedback.
Fantastic experience: We had a great time with our 2 and 4 year old, spending about 2 hours at the museum. Plenty of activities for the kids. They especially liked the dress up activities like fireman and doctor. The water play was super engaging and fun as well! We ended watching a theater show about making chowder. They had each kid in the audience participate in making the chowder. Thank you for the great experience!
Thank you so much, Ryan! We are thrilled to hear that you and your family had a fantastic experience at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: A lot of fun activities for children of all ages. Lots of hands-on exhibits, including an aquarium section, a lights area, train, medical, etc, and lots of other tactile interactive areas. Children were from about 6 months to at least 3 or 4 in the areas where we were.
Thank you for visiting CMTM and taking the time to share your experience, Ilya! We're thrilled to hear that you and your little ones enjoyed our hands-on exhibits and interactive areas. We hope to see you again soon for more play and interactive experiences!
Positive experience: It’s small, but it’s a fun place to take the kiddos, cool little water fountain area on the upper level where you can put raincoats on & go nuts! .. Best for 10 yrs & younger.
Thank you so much for this positive review, Caroline! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great experience for my 10 year old grandson. He loved the creative space and the water section on the 3rd floor.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Jane! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Our 7-year-old daughter absolutely loved this place and begged to come back the next day. If you visit, be prepared to do a lot of standing around because there's not many places for an adult to sit, but the kiddos love it! The only disappointment was the theater show, which was sold out days in advance.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Kevin! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: This was perfect for our almost 2 year old. He loved the toddler area. Also liked the walk climb. He could only do the first two levels, but that worked well for him.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Amanda! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great spot to take the kids in Portland. Mine loved the 3rd floor the most, the water table was really cool. Definitely go to the crafting time to make creations for the display- very fun and creative!
Thank you so much for this five star review, Kevin! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Positive experience: It is fun for kids to visit but a little too crowded sometimes, especially on the 2nd floor. Parents were forced to find corners to stand and watch their kids at the same time.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, Leiyan. We value all feedback as it helps us improve and provide the best experiences for our visitors. If you're looking for a quieter visit time, we recommend weekday afternoons, especially when school is in session. Fantastic experience: There was a lot for my child to do and they have a mini-aquarium space.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Raymond! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Positive experience: A great experience for the Littles. Lots of fun things to do. 3 levels for all ages. My only suggestion tho is to have a max capacity that you don't go over as far as people inside. I wouldn't be surprised if they were over what ever the county set it at yesterday. If not it should be lowered. My gosh there was a stupid amount of people in that building. If there ever was an emergency, there's no way that amount of people would get out with out being trampled on. Very hard to move around when there's that many people. Overall, great place if it's not standing room only.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, Kevin. We're so glad to hear that your Littles enjoyed their visit. We value all feedback as it helps us improve and provide the best experiences for our visitors. If you're looking for a quieter visit time, we recommend weekday afternoons, especially when school is in session. Fantastic experience: Very cool place! Wish we had something like this when I was a kid. The kids of all ages enjoyed it. Even the big ones.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Sharon! We're so glad to hear that your group enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great attraction. My children, 8, 3.5, and .5 years, all had plenty to engage and enjoy. Beautiful, well-crafted exhibits. Favorite was water play area. Museum does excellent job provide both stimulating and reflective spaces on each floor. Baby and I enjoyed Seaside Cottage reading nook for quiet moments and a bottle feed. Appreciate nursing room also available although occupied at the time.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Noelle! We're so glad to hear that your family enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Positive experience: Not sure where but we had understood that the museum would be 4 floors, there was 3. It was a nice place with lots to do for the kids and cool stuff they will eventually learn in school. But it seemed more like a giant play house for 18$ then an institution of history and education.
Thank you for taking the time to provide a review. We value all feedback as it helps us improve and provide the best experiences for our visitors. Should you like to discuss your visit in further detail, please contact us at [email protected]. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again soon!
Positive experience: For Maine it's a pretty good experiance! Its certainly not like some of the science museums we have been too but I think for kids 3 to 7 its a great fit. But you can get though it kind of quck and I wish the place had different shows in rotation. Still a must go!
Thank you for taking the time to provide a review, Duncan. We value all feedback as it helps us improve and provide the best experiences for our visitors. Should you like to discuss your visit in further detail, please contact us at [email protected]. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Order your tickets in advance for a certain part of the day. Our toddler was one of the younger ones but he still had a great time. 3 floors of things to do. Fairly crowded but they organize how many are inside at once so it's not too much. Space for strollers and outside things to do as well and parking is easy enough. Nice views of the back back of Portland I believe and right next to the Thompson's Point area where bands play. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Matthew! We're so glad to hear that your family enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: After a long drive from CT with out little one to Maine, we felt she deserved a little spoiling. Children’s museum did just that! Little bit of everything from live animals, to arts and crafts to plenty of play areas. Out 16month old loved it
Thank you so much for this five star review, TJ! We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We hope to see you again!
Fantastic experience: Very nice place to bring the kids! Save the top floor for last! Clean and colorful! We will be back! Also Calib at the front desk was very personable and friendly with my little ones. Such a nice place!
Thank you so much for this five star review, Lindsey! We're grateful to hear that you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, and will pass on your kind words to Caleb. We look forward to welcoming you again!
Fantastic experience: My kids love the balls on the third floor! We also really enjoy the craft making during the studio time. Happy to be members
Thank you so much for this five star review, Heidi! We're so glad to hear that your family loves coming to CMTM. Thank you for being members!
Fantastic experience: Outstanding experience at CMTM! I’m a Children’s Museum professional myself and attended with my two young children yesterday and we had such a brilliant time. Vibrant, imaginative, and FUN. Well done to the team who designed and operate such a fantastic venue.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Stephanie! We're so glad you enjoyed your visit to CMTM, especially as a fellow Children's Museum professional. We look forward to welcoming you again!
Positive experience: Bustling, bursting with energy and fun from all sides. Climbing structure and sandpit on the first floor; local civilian forts and dress-up on 2; river ecosystems and kinetic sculptures on 3. I’d advise to get there early. Try the makerspace and story corner (2). Then hit up the top floor - yes, your kid will get wet! Bring snacks or $5 to purchase; you’ll visit for 90-120 minutes and there is not a coffee or drink area. Overall excellent; we’ve been 3x in 5 years.
Thank you for this positive review, Michael! We're so glad to hear your family has been enjoying CMTM for so many years. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Best place to bring the kids to burn off energy! As a mom of twins, bringing them by myself is a breeze! Everyone is so helpful and nice!
Thank you for your five-star review, Kelly. Our team at Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine always strives for the highest standards. We are delighted we made your experience a positive one. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great children’s museum with different activities. Very clean and interactive!
Thank you for this five star review, Bill! We're delighted to hear that your family enjoyed your time at CMTM. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: The staff here is amazing - soooo very friendly and engaging. Our 8 year old is aging out of children's museums, but still had a good time. Lots for little ones to do (as evidenced by the sea of toddlers), but our 6 and 8 year old enjoyed almost everything on the 3rd floor.
Thank you so much for this five star review and your kind words about our staff, Becky! We're delighted to hear that your family enjoyed your visit to CMTM. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Phenomenal children's museum. I imagine kids of all ages would enjoy their time. Our kiddo (6 going on 7 at the time of our visit) was the perfect age. The water table on the 3rd floor kept him engaged for at least an hour! I also particularly appreciated the museum's approach to accessibility. The elevator was roomy with easy access on and off. Additionally many (if not all) of the exhibits were designed with accessibility for those with limited mobility in mind. Having to pay for parking was a bit of a disappointment, but it wasn't terribly expensive.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Daniel! We're especially delighted to hear that your family found the museum to be both accessible and engaging. We love the water tables, too! Parking is owned and operated by Thompson's Point, and is independent from the Museum & Theatre. We look forward to seeing your family at CMTM again in the future!
Fantastic experience: We came from Boston to explore new places. For small city as Portland, this childrens museum is great. No buffet, but they have snack area at first floor. So take your lunch with yourself. I was surprised to see outdoor playground in the territory of museum. Its safe for baby from 12 months. so overall impression is good, we liked this museum.
Thank you so much for this five star review! We're so glad to hear your family enjoyed your visit. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Kids loved the air room and it was easy to keep the kids engaged for about 3 hours. So many things for different ages and level of activity.
Thank you so much for this five star review, Adam! We're so glad to hear your family enjoyed your visit, and that you found CMTM to be engaging for all ages. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Positive experience: Ok place . Size of place is not that big. Water exhibit on 3rd floor is very cool and worth it. Note they honor veteran discounts after you buy online tickets and credit you the difference which is great and appreciated. Parking is $2 per hour, maybe need 2 hrs to go thru place.
Thank you for this review, Adam! We're glad to hear that your family enjoyed our water area, and that you appreciated our Military + Veteran discount. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Positive experience: Was a nice place to bring my almost 7 year old. Some stuff I think was a bit to young for him. But he loved the water stuff on the third floor.
Thank you for this lovely review, Shantell! We're so glad to hear your son enjoyed the water play area. Thank you for coming to play!
Positive experience: Fun place, lots of space to run around. Had to pay for parking, which was disappointing. But the kids loved the water play, aquarium, and craft room. It was not packed like I thought it would be during spring break. Worth the trip
Thank you for the review, Julie! We appreciate the feedback, and we're glad to know that you enjoyed your time at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. Parking is owned and operated by Thompson's Point, and is independent from the Museum & Theatre. We hope you'll come and visit again soon, we're looking forward to welcoming you back!
Positive experience: Stopped by here on my way home to Massachusetts to see a show with the kids, after the spent the week with family in northern Maine. The show was excellent- well cast, well acted, well costumed, and we all enjoyed it.... Until I herded the kids to the car only to find a $23 ticket on my windshield. Parking is $2/hr. We were there for 1.5 hrs. To add further insult, if you don't pay within 3 days the fee increases by $10. And if you pay online they charge an additional $3.50 credit card processing fee... Without giving a bank debit option (you can mail it in, but that information is buried in the FAQs and if I'm mailing on day 3 then what?). There is signage. I saw it driving in (while negotiating world peace with the 3 and 7 year old, after having been driving for ~4 hours). I didn't park in front of a sign or pay station and forgot to hunt one down. That's all on me. But I'm pretty sure I'm not the only tired, frazzled mother who tries to do something nice only to find that I'm being slapped with a fine that seems disproportionate to the "crime"... and also fairly callous. I recognize it's not the museum's responsibility to remind patrons or post additional signage, as the lot is not theirs. But... It was a cuss-inducing end to an otherwise enjoyable experience.
Thank you for coming to visit, Lauren, and for sharing that your family loved the show. We're so sorry to hear you had this frustrating parking experience. While parking is owned and operated by Thompson's Point, and is independent from the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, we appreciate you sharing this with us. We have sent your feedback along to Thompson's Point, and should you like to discuss your visit with us in further detail, please contact us at [email protected]. We also encourage you to send your feedback to Thompson’s Point directly at [email protected]. Thank you again for coming to visit, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again soon!
Positive experience: Compared to other museums and the price, it could be better and offer more!!! It is a cute museum catered towards younger children but not really for kids aged 7 and up as they got bored after an hour.
Thank you for coming to play, Jei! If you have any suggestions or additional feedback about your experience, we'd be happy to hear from you! Please give us a call at (207) 828-1234, or email [email protected]. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: We had a magical time at the museum with our 2.5 and 5yo's. The staff was all so engaging with the kids and seemed genuinely interested in them. The kids spent hours giggling and experimenting. I would highly recommend it!
Thank you so much for this fabulous review, Leah! We're delighted to hear that your family enjoyed your visit, and we're especially appreciative of your kind words about our amazing staff. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: This children's museum in Portland, Maine is a delightful port of discovery for curious kiddos. Packed with three floors of interactive exhibits, it offers a mix of science, local flavor, and imaginative play. * Dive into Discovery! The museum offers more than just lobsters! Explore the wonders of Maine's natural world, from the engaging aquarium on the third floor to interactive science exhibits throughout. * Cast Off for Fun! Of course, a trip to a Maine children's museum wouldn't be complete without a lobster adventure. The "Our Neighborhood" exhibit on the second floor features a beloved lobster boat exhibit, complete with a mini lobster shack for dramatic play. Tips for Landlubbers: * Parking is difficult, so be prepared to search for a spot. * Bring a change of clothes if you plan to visit the water exhibit on the third floor. * Check the schedule for interesting classes offered on the second floor.
Thank you so much for this fabulous review, Eric! We're delighted to hear that your family had so much fun at CMTM. We look forward to welcoming you again!
Positive experience: Great interactive museum for kiddos. The water table was a huge hit with my family. It's smaller than it looks. Even though you pre-buy tickets for specific times, they don't seem to limit the number of people entering the building. We've been twice, and it has been an absolute zoo both times.
Thank you for coming to play, Rebecca! We're so glad to hear that your kids had a blast. If you have any suggestions or additional feedback about your experience, we'd be happy to hear from you! Please give us a call at (207) 828-1234, or email [email protected]. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Clean, bright, and a very friendly staff. It's definitely one of the best children's museums we've visited. The spaces are nicely divided, making it easy to corale our 2 kids into a singular area without losing track of them while also allowing them some freedom to go explore. The place isn't giant, but it's big enough. We especially love the makers' space open 1-2 times daily.
Thank you so much for this fabulous review! We're thrilled to hear that your family's CMTM experience has been so positive for kids and caregivers alike, and that you are big fans of MakerSpace. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Positive experience: Super fun for the kids. I was a little disappointed and thought there would be more but the kids had a blast so thats all that matters.
Thank you for coming to play, Scott! We're so glad to hear that your kids had a blast. If you have any suggestions or additional feedback about your experience, we'd be happy to hear from you! Please give us a call at (207) 828-1234, or email [email protected]. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: My daughter loves this place! She especially loves the top floor with the ball learning and play areas as well as the dark room with various light up activities. She could spend the whole day playing with the water balls. The only thing I personally don't like is the field trip groups. Every time we go there are bus loads of kids that are so excited they become rude unmanageable towards the younger kids. I wish we could figure out what days to go, if any, that don't have field trip groups. But kids will be kids and I can understand their excitement
Thank you so much for this five star review! We're so glad to hear your daughter loves coming to play at CMTM. If you have any suggestions or additional feedback about your experience, we'd be happy to hear from you! Please give us a call at (207) 828-1234, or email [email protected]. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Our family had a great time at the Children's Museum! It was our first time. The kids had a blast on the climbing structure on the first floor and also spent a long time on the second floor doing dress up and playing at the different neighborhood exhibits. My kids are 5 & 7. There was lots to do for younger ones too with a dedicated toddler only area. There is an aquarium and another area for water play on the third floor. We ended the day outside on the playground. Even though it was winter it was a mild day so it was nice to have them get some energy out. We will definitely be back!
Thank you so much for this amazing review, Kelly! We're thrilled to know that your family had such a wonderful visit, and we look forward to welcoming you again!
Positive experience: Awesome experience! But not a lot of onsite parking available so had to park on nearby street for small fee. Kids, 4 and 10, thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a little crowded for my liking but kids didn't seem phased by the amount of other guests.
Thank you for your positive review, Michael! We're so glad you came to play, and look forward to welcoming you again!
Fantastic experience: The ONLY complaint I have is that there isn't enough playtime for children with autism that can't handle the crowds. My boy usually wants to leave early because he can't handle the massive noise and crowd. They DO have certain days for these types of kids but I think they need more. But ...5 stars all around. The staff is exceptional and caring. Love this place
Thank you for this wonderful review, Craig! We're so glad that you and your family enjoy your visits, especially our Play Your Way sensory-friendly play sessions. We will share your feedback with our team, and look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Always a great time. With a variety of exhibits both my 3 and 7 year old are entertained. It’s very clean, with plenty on hand washing and sanitizing stations. The staff is always so helpful and kind. Sometimes it’s a little hectic during peak hours but it never seems “too crowded”
Thank you for the five-star review, Jill! We are so pleased to hear you and your children had a great time. Thank you for sharing your feedback about the cleanliness of our spaces and our positive team members. We strive to make each visit a memorable one. We look forward to welcoming you all again soon!
Fantastic experience: Literally the cutest place. Our son will ask about going back for days after visiting. Staff are so friendly!

Our team takes great pride in our work, and in creating a comfortable environment for all! We're looking forward to welcoming you back again soon.
Fantastic experience: Had a great time here seeing everything. It was busy due to it being a holiday weekend. We went as to find out if it would be worth getting a family season pass. Our conclusion is yes, our 2 - and 3 year old sons absolutely had a blast. Especially when we made it to the 3rd floor where the fish and water center was. We will be purchasing this family pass.

Fantastic experience: Took out 17 months old here. Want sure if she would be too young, but she loved it. She wasn't able to do everything but loved trying and watching the bigger kids. Plenty of stuff perfect for her to interact with too.

Fantastic experience: This place is incredible. We brought our three year old here and it outshines many of the other childrens museums we've visited in other states. It is clean, it feels new, it offers a ton of engagement for all types of kids. It wasnt crowded, there is plenty to do, my wife and I would go back to Maine just for this museum. Couldn't praise this place enough. Pace yourself, let your children take it all in, and enjoy watching them explore! You'll love it too!

Fantastic experience: Such a great place!! We thought we were going to have to leave at noon, so we rushed the kids through the last floor. I wish we had just taken our time. There was so much to do and see for a 7 and 9 year old. I would have loved more information about the bees. We all loved that exhibit and had to wait until we left to see the outside.
Thank you for the five star review! We're grateful to know that you enjoyed your visit to the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We appreciate your feedback, and we have shared it with out team. We're pleased know that you enjoyed your time at the Museum & Theatre, and that your 7 and 9 year olds had a wonderful time! We hope to welcome you back again soon.
Fantastic experience: My two boys had a great time. We drove from Lincoln to visit, well worth the drive it's way better than the one in Bangor. Make sure you bring a extra pair of clothes for the little ones the 3rd floor they will get wet with the water stuff, but so worth it. They do have a section for kids 3 and under my 1 year old had a great time too. Highly recommend going.
Thank you so much, Tiffany! We're so pleased to hear that you found your experience at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine worthwhile, even with a long drive. Great tip about packing some extra clothing! We're appreciative of the five stars and the positive review. We're launching some toddler-specific Art, Theatre, and Science programs in Fall 2023, check out our events and programs calendar for upcoming dates: https://www.kitetails.org/event-program-calendar. We hope to welcome you back again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great place to take the kids for a few hours. My wild boy was worn out by the end. So much fun to be had. Area is great too, lots of things in this area. Just make sure to pay the parking. This area doesn't play with parking tickets.
Thank you for the five star review and feedback! We're glad your family enjoyed their time at the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We hope you'll visit again soon, we're looking forward to welcoming you back!
Negative experience: They pack you in there like a bunch of sardines. Apparently it’s limited to 150 tickets per hour but there were way more people than that when we visited on a sunny Wednesday. The exhibits are set up awkwardly & the most popular ones are set up too closely together. We spent way too much money on tickets and left in less than an hour because it was so overcrowded.
Caroline, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We always want our visitors to have a positive experience and are sorry to hear that wasn't the case for your group. Weekends, holidays, and days with inclement weather are our busiest times. Weekday afternoons during the school year tend to be quieter. If there is any additional information you'd like to share about your visit, please email [email protected] , or give us a call at (207) 828-1234. We appreciate your support.
Fantastic experience: I took my two Autistic kids here for their Play Your Way time slot, and they had a WONDERFUL time!! The staff was super friendly, understanding and accommodating, and the third floor with the water station and ball sculpture were a HUGE hit. So nice to have a neurodivergent-friendly place to take my kiddos, and feel truly welcome. Can't wait to go back!

Fantastic experience: Great place to bring kids. There are tons of different activities and themed rooms to entertain kids with just about any interests. The water room is always a big hit. Also the animal/aquarium area is nice. My kids have fun here every time we go. All the parking is paid. There is not much for food options really close.
Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful review! We're thrilled to hear that time-and-again your family enjoys visiting the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine. We're looking forward to welcoming you back again soon!
Positive experience: Visually it was great. First floor and third floor were really fun. Second floor was ok but a lot of the activities seemed rather simple and short lived. Like it's cool that you can be a bird walking around on a giant screen, but only for a minute. Maybe that is on purpose so people move through quickly.
Thank you so much for the positive review! We're grateful to know that you enjoyed the first and third floors, and CMTM's visuals. If you have any suggestions or additional feedback about your experience on floor two, we'd be happy to hear from you! Please give us a call at (207) 828-1234, or email [email protected]. We hope to see you again soon!
