🗣️ Discovery Place Science: Reviews
Positive experience: I came here for my birthday in 2022. I would rate it 4 stars, but I had to wear a band that hurt, so I could only rate it three stars.
Positive experience: Great places for kids around ages 4+ it had a section for younger kids but wish it was a bit bigger. Our Daughter still had lots of fun we will be back when she’s a little bit older.
Positive experience: We found some of the displays interesting. There were lots of children just running around and not paying attention. When we were trying to look at the displays, children would just jump in front of us. I will not go back until school starts back up.
Fantastic experience: This was our first visit to the museum and we were a little turned around as far as what to do and where to park. We encountered Darius at the help desk on the 3rd level and he made it so easy to figure out! We were so excited to meet him and hear about his love for the museum and he truly is the King of Science! Thank you so much, Darius, for being so kind and helpful. You truly are an asset to DPS!
Fantastic experience: Went for my kids birthday party. We had a blast. Kids enjoyed the science experiments we picked for them to do. We did the build your own vs. Picking a theme as i have a 4 and 9 year old. I wish i could have seen a picture of the party room so i could purchase decorations accordingly, but this wasnt a deal breaker. You have access to the museum after your party so we explored afterward.
Negative experience: This place advertised dinosaurs and when we got there we saw absolutely nothing dinosaur related, this was a very big disappointment because I came here only interested in the dinosaurs but it wasn’t the worst, there were a couple pretty interesting things but overall it’s mostly for kids
Fantastic experience: We love our visits to discovery place. Not only is it always educational, but we all have fun while learning. This location is very clean from the restrooms to the interactive stations, they’re always well kept. Staff is super friendly and kind every time we’ve been.
Positive experience: Really fun experience! Here visiting and it was raining so was needing something indoors. My daughter would have stayed here for 4-5 hrs if we had the time! We spent 2.5hrs and it flew by because it was so interesting and hands on. Tons of experiences and stations to do hands on things! My only complaint was the parking. There is a garage but is $17 for 2hrs or $30 for the day. That’s ridiculous when we already spent $72 for 2 adults and 1 child to enter. Parking should be included. We parked down the road in a lot that was $15 for the day and less than 5 minute walk. Otherwise was a blast! Could be a full day if you added in imax and lunch nearby.
Negative experience: This museum was very disappointing. Nothing compared to the museums I have visited in NY. Definitely not worth the price. The exhibits were boring. My family and I were in and out in an hour.
Fantastic experience: Worth the money! 3 floors and lots of cool stuff.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place! Well designed with three floors of fun stuff. We spent so much time on floors 1 & 3 we didn't even get to floor 2. The Discovery/STEM lab on the first floor was excellent, our kids spent hours in there. Huge shout out to Menelik and the two other young guys working the room, they were so enthusiastic and fun! The made the place very enjoyable. Floor 3 with the Legos and craft stations was incredible. Definitely many more trips!
Fantastic experience: BEAN SPROUTS!! Please eat at the little restaurant inside is discovery place!! It’s sooo soo yummy. Everything is so healthy and fresh and delicious. You have to try the miso aioli!
Positive experience: Not bad. Kinda pricey….but for science on the rocks - its worth it. DJ was not the best but it was definitely a good vibe. Drinks were also okay. Not too expensive. The exhibits were definitely somewhat designed for children, which is fine if you still like that as an adult. Don't get the popcorn its way too salty. Budget your time because there are also live shows. Will it glow was boring (sorry) but the fire show was good. IMAX - Journey to Mars was NOT worth the price. Felt like I watched that same show when I was in grade school. (a long time ago lmao) Go for the vibes. Charlotte doesn't have much, but this is a good one time thing. (happens every month)
Positive experience: Our experience was okay. My boys enjoyed the hands on activities, it was clean, and the staff was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. However, it was overcrowded with schools on field trips, some activities were broken, and it was very overpriced for what it was.
Negative experience: The third floor feels completely abandoned and most attractions are broken or no longer functional because no one bothers resupplying them. Aquarium? This place has some random tanks. Very disappointed by the cost associated with this place. Clearly they are paying for their location and not much else. The cost of admission and parking makes this a must miss. It was ok but not worth the hassle of uptown Charlotte. They don't even bother supplying maps or posting them inside the building. Good luck figuring out where to go to be disappointed.
Fantastic experience: Shout out to Nina for being amazing at customer service. I went to see the Jane Goodall and was grabbing a coffee. Nina was so kind, friendly, accommodating, engaging and managed it all during a clearly busy lunch hour. I work in service as well and know what it takes and she is doing a stellar job. Sent from my iPhone
Positive experience: Fun place for kids, just worn down over years with older exhibits and many broken. Imax is amazing. The traveling exhibits have been a bit boring. Overall still fun for kids!
Fantastic experience: My crew loved the interactive stations. We went on a Monday morning. Definitely recommend going at a quiet time.
Positive experience: We drove 3 hours to go visit this museum. We already were a member of Life and Science Museum so we didn’t have to pay anything. This museum is surely does have entertainment for kids but not to that extent. They have restrictions on kids painting or making something out of wood. I think the best thing about this place is the rain forest which is flooded with birds. It feels like I am really in the jungle. I love the variety of birds they have but also felt like the space is so little for those birds. Birds are supposed to fly free in the sky but these birds are caged. They have a big a ceiling on top of themselves. It made me wonder if the birds are actually happy there. Overall it’s a good place for kids.
Negative experience: Parking and food are too expensive 30$. Bring your food guys. They have cafeteria and prices of water bottle pizza sandwich or burger are crazily expensive and quantity is very low.
Negative experience: My wife and I took our daughter to visit and we were very let down. The facility is nice but the exhibits and interactive stations felt lackluster at best. I can’t think of one thing that was memorable about this place. My wife went when she was in elementary school and said she felt like there was so much more when she went when she was younger. For the price(around $70 for tickets and $30 food/drink)this place is not worth your time unless you do not care about prices and are just wanting something to do.
Positive experience: Love taking the kids here. Some of their activities are out of order a lot and are the same as when I was a kid. They should open at 8am, 10:30 is way too late for families.
Positive experience: The museum is great and so is the price. There are lots of interactive and educational information in the museum. You can easily spend 2 to 3 hours there just going through the different exhibits. We really enjoyed it but I think the closing time needs to be extended at least for Friday through Sunday.
Fantastic experience: I had an amazing time at Discovery Place Science in Charlotte! This museum is full of interactive exhibits that make science fun and engaging for all ages. We got to touch a snake and sea stars, which was an unforgettable experience! On the third floor, there’s a creative space where you can build your own projects using boxes and tape—perfect for those who love hands-on creativity and solving scientific puzzles. The second floor felt like stepping into a tropical fairy tale, with beautiful birds flying around in a lush rainforest setting. The aquarium section was also a nice surprise, and the live science demonstrations were fascinating. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, making the visit even more enjoyable. Whether you’re visiting with kids or just love science and creativity, this place is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Definitely worth visiting with family or for a date, has plenty of interactive exhibits and a couple floors of stuff, a gift shop, and a water area with wind tunnels to play with scarfs for the kids in a separate area, you can touch starfish and urchins, they had a tarantula out to see and a snake you could pet, a little aquarium area as well this is definitely enjoyable, only gripe would be a few exhibits at a time can be out of order sometimes
Fantastic experience: Large facility with plenty to experience. We went specifically for the Jane Goodall exhibit which did not disappoint. Military discount and bring your parking ticket and get a discount here as well.
Fantastic experience: This is a great place to take your kids.i went here as a kid and had an awesome experience.there is so much to see and great learning experience. Your kids will enjoy this place.
Negative experience: I'll be honest I had high hopes for this place. Half the exhibits did not have any description at all...a handful of the interactive displays weren't working. For $70 for the three of us...I feel like it was a waste of money. Another note is that there are no metal detectors....and they do not check your bags. So huge red flag. We will not return nor go to any other Discovery Place museums.
Positive experience: I wasn't nearly as impressed as I thought I'd be. The building is really nice but there isn't a ton of stuff for older kids to do. The whole 3rd level was trashed. There were lots of school groups there and I assume they trashed it but no one was going in behind them and picking up after them. The second level was better and cleaner but some of the exhibits that were working were just run down and not maintained well. The 1st level was nice and everything was clean and maintained. The bathrooms were clean and maintained and that's important. Over all I personally don't think it's worth the price and we won't battle the chaos of Charlotte for it.
Positive experience: Pretty neat place but 100 percent not worth the $74 for tickets for our family of 3 and then $28 to get out of the parking deck!
Fantastic experience: It was a very fun experience. However, I did have a child that unfortunately felt sick 10-15 mins into our visit but Kristina(I believe her name tag said) was very nice, very understanding, concerned and knowledgeable about where the bathrooms are and about helping us with whatever was needed. We'll definitely be back when all of our children are better.
Negative experience: I went with my adult daughter to visit. We go to many museums, aquariums, nature centers and zoos all over the US. I would rate this as our worst experience. It is not for adults, yet many of the exhibits are static displays, videos, or poorly done hands on displays. A lot, of the items were out of order, missing parts, and what was available was crowded and not worth the wait. The fish tanks and animal exhibits were dirty and very difficult to see the creatures on display. The slough was their big item and we never saw it that day. I visited this place about 20 years ago and it had many live exhibits of animals with people teaching and letting the children interact with the animals. There were none of those left. This place needs to seek new management and seek the help of more successful learning centers. It was boring, dirty and not worth the money.
Negative experience: Went here for my son’s 5th birthday. All the fun kid things were broken or closed down. Very disappointing especially with how much you pay. Do not recommend.
Positive experience: The Marvel universe is not there anymore (Jan 2025 update). Discovery is probably the most well known tourist spot in Charlotte downtown, excellent for kids, but for adults more of a visual learning activity. We tried to buy the tickets online for discounted price but it didn’t work. So we bought them at the kiosk for regular price. It spreads over 3 floors. First floor has small aquarium, living things, theater, planetarium stuff. 2nd floor has cool thing about how human body is formed (my favorite section of the place), a walk by through rain forest, and special section for “Becoming Jane”. There’s also several of workshops for kids. 3rd floor is mainly for kids building and designing activities. The place is overall clean. Lots of staff all around to keep things tidy and safe. Cafeteria and gift shop is on first floor across the entrance.
Negative experience: We wanted to love our visit but found large # of big ticket or highlighted items were broken/not working. Interactive exhibit areas needed cleaning /resetting as it felt a bit as if you were getting the “leftovers” after someone else had finished playing. Too much of what was accessible was for more of 10+ yr age. Not worth price due to above.
Fantastic experience: What a wonderful place! I'd give them 10 stars out of 5 if I could! My two 9-year- old boys loved the robotics lab with Spike Prime, the rain forest, the screen that dissected abd revealed body parts of many animals, but MOST of all, they loved the Think Space just beyond the entrance. I had to drag them in, but then magic began: one decided to build a drum set and the other a race car. They worked diligently on their creations, with no help from me but excellent help from the staff. They are both hugely thrilled with what they made! We'll be back!!
Fantastic experience: I really enjoyed seeing the frogs and fish! I was inspired by the Jane Goodall exhibit. The body exhibit was cool and I learned new things. I learned a lot watching the planet show in the IMAX theater. I was blown away!
Positive experience: Nice facility wasn’t too crowded when we went. They had plenty of hands of things for kids (and adults) to do. Interesting assortment of animals to view. The place wasn’t too confusing to navigate. Some parts of the place were a little too hot (not just the jungle exhibits which is understandable) rest rooms were clean but I couldn’t find an elevator so be careful if you can’t use stairs.
Positive experience: The museum is great but there were a lot of broken exhibits. Given the price of admission that was really disappointing. Frustrating was that there were also a lot of seemingly unattended older kids. No parents or responsible adult to be seen.
Fantastic experience: Loved this place. Lot of variety of exhibits from animals to crafts. Kids had a blast here. Easily can spend a few hours here. This place also has an imax theater, which we didn't explore but pics looked cool. Highly recommend for a family time.
Positive experience: Great weekend adventure to take the family to the parking deck is expensive but i guess thats to be expected for downtown Charlotte there where three floors of different hands on activities to do they didn't have that many animals to see but there where exhibits for them on the first floor the best part was probably the indoor rainforest we had a good time
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love going to Discovery Place Science. I went here many times on field trips and loved it. It is perfect for all ages and a great learning opportunity.
Fantastic experience: It was an incredible place with tons of stuff for kids to do. We spent 4 hours here and had a BLAST!
Negative experience: Visited on 9/15/2024 with out of town relatives. Very disappointed …. this place seriously needs an update. We used to bring our children 30 years ago and loved it but now most of the exhibits are old, dated, and barely functional. Not much to do here, really. The “new” dinosaur exhibit that was highly advertised was CLOSED. We got a discount on the parking but it still cost us $22 for the afternoon.
Fantastic experience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Discovery Center in Charlotte is an absolute gem! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. The facility is spotless, well-maintained, and provides a safe environment for everyone. There are tons of fun and educational activities for people of all ages, making it the perfect spot for families, kids, and adults alike. Whether you're there for hands-on learning or just a fun day out, this place delivers. Highly recommend visiting!
Fantastic experience: We had an absolute blast exploring. Our ages ranged from 4 - 40 and there was something for everyone! We stayed for 3 hours and only left because we had other plans. This is a great place to take the family for a day of fun!
Fantastic experience: It was a fun place to pass the time and learn about science. I was amazed about the different types os species of fishes they have there. It was so fun to touch a starfish. The dinosaur area is very impressive too ! It was a great afternoon, kids will definitely have a good time and adults too.
Positive experience: I've been visiting this location since I was a little kid (90s) and always had a great time. They have their main usual exhibits, which are their toddler kids' water play, insects and forest creatures, their aquariums, and rainforest. Upstairs, they have their "cool stuff" exhibit, and when we went, they had a dinosaur exhibition. You can easily spend about 3 hours here actually looking and exploring everything. They do have their Imax theatre, and you can check out their showtime on their website. They have a parking garage where you have to pay for parking. They unfortunately do not validate. Another bad thing in uptown. Other than that, something cool and fun to do for the whole family.
Fantastic experience: We hosted a birthday party at the museum recently and it was a blast! We chose the Ocean Friends theme. We were able to see sea creatures and even touch a few in the tank. I love that parking validation was available for all guest attending the party and the party person of honor received a shirt. The guest loved that they could come before or after the party and enjoy the museum at their leisure. Such a great experience with the staff!
Fantastic experience: We visited the museum about a week ago, and I was impressed with the interactive elements throughout. My kids absolutely loved it—there were engaging activities and exhibits for all ages. The experience was highly informative, and we particularly enjoyed the various phases of the museum, especially the dinosaur exhibition. I highly recommend a visit.
Positive experience: Place was pretty cool. We have a 2 year old so we just experienced all of the visual exhibits. The Dinosaur exhibit was the highlight for my boy. He also liked climbing through the net bridge in the rain forest section. The frog exhibit and the aquarium was also a hit. He even got to pet a baby snake. There were a lot of interactive exhibits that were great that I think he was too young for. We will bring our boy back when he's just slightly older to experience all of those exhibits as well. Everything was easily accessible and there are elevators throughout, even in the parking lot. Went on a Sunday and wasn't really too crowded. Buy your tickets ahead of time online and get a discount. Overall, a really good experience. We will be back.
Positive experience: Mgmt needs to fix basics. Came in from pkg deck 3 and did not know where to pay as it had member sign but not ticket sign so it looked like members only. We walked around for an hour and did not pay until i found a tix booth at another entrance. Love love Imax. No items left in gift shop for sale at 2:30 which means lost sales. Almost got ripped off on parking fee at 30 but asked staff if i could get discount and they told me to pay inside at 14 flat rate. There needs to be better customer service for value of visit so we can afford to come back. I'm afraid that alot of people enjoyed your museum for free since no one is paying attention.
Fantastic experience: We came here on Friday after 4th of July while on vacation in Charlotte. The facility is very large, on 3 levels, and there are TONS of interactive things to do on every level. Everyone in our group (ages 5-65) had a great time and learned cool stuff about nature, animals, the human body, and space. This is not a boring museum, everything is hands on and creative. We even saw a movie in the IMAX Theater (Despicable Me 4). Not sure why we paid an extra $21 for the movie because we walked right into the theater - no one was monitoring the door or checking tickets. Excellent place to spend 3 hours with family.
Fantastic experience: As a homeschooling family with 4 children, this is one of our favorite places to visit! We recently experienced the newest exhibit, the Dinosaurs. It was incredible. I was blown away by the interactive media that enabled true interaction with the dinosaurs. There were even fossils that children could touch (something you’d never find in a regular museum). This dinosaur exhibit beats any other on the East coast that we have experienced! Overall, this museum is very well kept. Nothing is broken. I’m very impressed every time we step foot in this museum!
Fantastic experience: Had allot of fun the kids had a blast I would say going up to the top of the parking deck and just walking across the pathway instead of crossing the street is easier for large groups. Definitely will a stroller for infants.
Fantastic experience: They have really fun exhibits for families, and the theater is great as well!
Fantastic experience: Nice and entreteined place for kids, i was on a school visit with my daughter? They have activities and play areas for the kids? Recomend
Positive experience: We have visited on many occasions and enjoy it every time. Wouldn’t mind a couple new exhibits.
Positive experience: So i went here on a field trip .. and surprisingly the place was really nice ! they had a lot of hands on things to do and they had a lot of cool animals and they made stuff look so realistic i want to go again but i recommend that you guys keep the aquarium tanks clean .. still a nice place though they always have 3 floors , a gift shop , and a food court . they also have a lot of things you can learn from which is mostly sciencey if you get me ! .
Positive experience: This place has so much potential. Half of the interactive attractions were broken or missing parts. There were so many creativity based centers, but none of them were stocked with supplies. We did enjoy the rain forest and the aquarium areas immensely. The Cafe was great and the food was both reasonably priced and very good.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place to bring the kids or even entertaining for adults! The best kids museum I've ever been to. They have fun activities and things that kids cannot do anywhere else. Just go!
Fantastic experience: Found a wedding band on 4/6 near the air chair - describe it and I'll make sure it gets back to you. Send me an email description to wheelieformeatgmaildotcom. Fairly interesting and engaging activities for the family to do. A little bit better than expected, we ended up spending almost 3 hours here! The IMAX eclipse presentation was okay, remember, don't stare at the sun folks.
Fantastic experience: Excellent for small and big kids. It's a very fun place and has so many great attractions. I really enjoyed and my 12 year old and 3 year old had a blast. It was something different and with cool stuff that they don't get bored. I strongly recommend this place. The staff is very friendly and always available. It has a parking behind and the price for the park and parking isn't bad. You can pay the ticket at the museum.
Fantastic experience: My partner and I visited for Science on the Rocks - and it was such a fun date night! It was the perfect chance to relax and explore the museum kid-free
Fantastic experience: Wonderfully creative place for your children of all ages! We live in Raleigh but came here cuz we can get in for free with our membership to Marbles here in Raleigh! Saved us $67 on admission!!! AMEN! There are three floors of fun sciency things for your kids to experiment with, creative building things, water play, musical things, and the best part our son loved the most…ANIMALS!!! He LOVED seeing the animals and experience that aspect. My favorite part was the HUGE 2-story tropical rain forest type bird aviary they have there! Top notch! ️ We went through all three floors, then took our lunch break in their AWESOME cafeteria!!! The food was AWESOME! You HAVE to get one of their Mango Smoothies!!!! After finishing lunch, we walked through the museum a second time, hitting all of the highlights and seeing our favorite parts again. LOVED IT! (The only negative aspect at all, was that a few of their interactive exhibits needed their pieces replenished…or some aspect of the apparatus fixed or maintenance performed on it.)
Fantastic experience: Perfect for your kids! This is a very interactive museum . I love the setup, and how can you engage with the public. The Marvel exhibit was very good and rich in information and items from the movies. Military discounts are available.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely loved the museum but especially the Marvel exhibit. The Marvel exhibit was an additional cost but worth it!
Fantastic experience: This is a fun place to go to. From looking at neat science stuff to playing a game about space, this place is full of stuff that will make you have a great time. What I really came here for was astronomy. However the moon stuff was a little to complicated for me. Another problem is that someone probably moved a bit too much that they threw up in the toilet. I’m not kidding. I’ll show proof but blur it since it’s disgusting. Other than that the rainforest area was cool, as well as the aquarium and the life stuff. We didn’t realize there was 3 floors so we almost missed one but in my honest opinion it was meh. Just some random robotics or building stuff. You could make music up there though. There is this technology thingy that you can use and it’s about a skeleton. And at the cool stuff area they have cool stuff. There is like a slingshot and some kind of machine next to the slingshot. There are 2 machines. The air chair and whatever the other one is called. I rate this a 5/5. I would come back but I would not like to see vomit.
Fantastic experience: Great exhibits and a first rate staff. The food is great quality, a bit on the high side but comparable with local restaurants.
Positive experience: Discovery Place is and always will be AWESOME! I've been going here since I was a child, and now I have the opportunity to take my own kids. I'd give them 5 stars, but we were kind of saddened that we couldn't afford to see the IMAX movies anymore. They have a great admission discount for families that receive SNAP benefits, but not much of a discount for the actual IMAX tickets so we were pretty bummed that we couldn't afford to pay around $30 for our family of 4 to go see a movie. However, if you have the money, the IMAX is unique and a one of a kind experience. Another pricing issue was with the moving exhibit- $20 per PERSON to see super heroes... I didn't see anyone walk into that exhibit for that price. Money aside, GENERAL admission grants you access to the museum portion which includes a children's area (7 years old or younger), a rainforest, a mini aquarium, an area where you can zoom in with microscopes on all sorts of nature-y things like rocks, sand, bugs, bones, shells, etc... and so much more! It's a lot of fun and there's a lot to learn for both adults and children. Our favorite exhibit has always been the bed of nails, because, how cool is that?! If you live in or are visiting the immediate area and haven't visited this museum, it's definitely in my book of top 5's for things to do in Charlotte with kids.
Fantastic experience: It's a wonderful experience for all ages. So much changes along the way, since I've been there. Love the atmosphere and the multi-level they have to explore. You can get to feel and things to do while you there. Also the IMAX dome theater will have you floating in the cloud. The mini rain forest and aquarium have a good viewing to enjoy.
Fantastic experience: Growing up in Charlotte, Discovery Place holds a piece of my childhood heart for all of the memories. Today was no different as I brought my son with his Grandfather for the Marvel exhibit they’re holding. The staff was wonderful and informative and facilities were excellent. The exhibits were immersive and I can not speak highly enough of the Marvel adventure. So well put together and amazing to see the authentic costumes, original artworks, and detailed props. An amazing afternoon spent walking through Discovery Place!
Fantastic experience: We visited Discovery Place Science recently with our 4 oldest grandchildren, ages 10, 12, 14, with some doubt as to whether they would be too old for the exhibits. I'm not sure why we were worried. They absolutely loved it. There were plenty of interactive exhibits and lots of exhibits with live animals. On the day we were there, there was a Marvel exhibit, which was fun for us older guys as well as the kids. We will definitely go back.
Fantastic experience: I haven’t been to Discovery Place since I was a toddler! I was happy to come back to see the Marvel Exhibition!!!!!! I absolutely loved it! So much information and to see the actual costumes that the actors wore was amazing! I would recommend!!!!!
Fantastic experience: Great place to visit. The Marvel exhibit is definitely worth the price of admission if you have kids that love the MCU like mine do. Enjoy Friends!!!
Fantastic experience: Love this place for my toddler. He was able to interact and touch everything. The rain forest exhibit was awesome along with their smaller aquarium. The visit was well worth your money. So many things to do and learn here for a variety of ages.
Fantastic experience: We went for a work retreat and I was really impressed. Lots of great exhibits! Could have spent all day here. Parking in the garage is located across the street, which can be easy to miss depending on which navigation app you use. Cafe onsite and plenty of restaurants located within walking distance.
Negative experience: Decided to bring my son here for his birthday.. I've been to a couple of discovery science places and this by far was the worst one I've experienced.. I feel it needs to do a revamp the experience and price you pay don't add up.. some of the activities in the cool stuff section weren't even working at all.. the aquarium was ok the rainforest was cool for what it was. The education facilities were neat to have but all were empty for the most part.. they need to fix how you buy tickets online.. we waited 25 minutes to get in bc of how slow the person at the front had to look up numbers scan your phone .. could be better and faster . Didn't do iMax but iMax will always be king of theater's
Positive experience: Nice place to bring your kids. Tickets are expensive. This place is mostly focused on kids.
Negative experience: 8-10 broken/out of order stations. Sticker shock at the window occupied my mind for the entire day! $77 for 1adult/2kids! Not as interactive as expected. This is the worst science center we have experienced in NC so far. Everything of interest was $20 extra.
Positive experience: Great place for kids, so much to do and see. A lil' pricey for 2 adults and 2 kids (like $178), but you can stay there for hours. We saw the Marvel exhibit and were not disappointed.
Positive experience: Nice museum. Went with a preschool class. Not as big as some of the others I’ve been to in Columbia, SC and Raleigh. I probably would not buy a membership to this one due to that reason.
Fantastic experience: The best place to take your kids too. Lots to do and hands on interactive
Negative experience: If you want to spend $100 and have half the exhibits say this, then by all means, go do it. Honestly this was such a waste of time and money. We did everything the was working within an hour. Plus, so many kids from summer camps that were rude and cutting in line in front of our daughter. Not the best experience. Do better Discovery Place Science Center.
Positive experience: Where are the Iron Man souvenirs? All Marvel’s recognition thanks to Spider-Man, Iron Man and Captain America, what the hell? Why is there so little attention paid to these characters?
Fantastic experience: 2nd time here with a field trip from Prosperity Sc 2nd graders, and I loved it as much as the first time with my oldest. Hated the 2nd floor was under construction, but we will be back soon as it's complete
Fantastic experience: We love the play room for younger kids. The water table is my son’s favorite. The rainforest has also been a hit. I highly recommend the annual pass.
Positive experience: Some of the exhibitions were closed, but the animals and rain forest exhibition were nice. They have a place where you can sit and order food, they have nice healthy options which is nice. The turkado sandwich was really good.
Fantastic experience: It was a worth of the time trip. Tried to cover every part of it but couldn't as we went almost endeof the day. My kid liked rainforest and sea world part first. Then he found out that top secret wing but by that time it's already closed. Definitely worthy for kids time.
Fantastic experience: Visiting from Mpls and we did a day with our little girl at this museum. She had fun; and there’s a lot to do. Tickets are on the higher end though and parking $14 is a bit too much.
Positive experience: My best friend moved from OH to NC and I’m in SC so we met up to have a family day! Our party of people consisted of my best friend, her husband, their 4 month old, mysef, my husband, our 2 daughters (10 & 4), and my best friend’s parents. We spent about 5 hours at Discovery Place. My husband is in a wheelchair and we had no issues with getting handicap parking, the parking garage and entire facility are wheelchair accessible. There were tons of hands on activities for the kids to do. There’s really no rhyme or reason to the layout. It’s all just an open area and you can freely go from one to another. It was a little crowded so we did have to wait for some of the interactive exhibits but not too bad. The rainforest is a great experience and allows you to really immerse into the experience. The rainforest is accessible from the 1st and 2nd floor. The 3rd floor wasn’t the greatest but by the time you get there, you’re wiped out anyways. This is definitely a museum that will take hours so be prepared to make a day of it. By the time we got to the 2nd floor and the kids did all those activities, we didn’t have much time before they closed to do the Top Secret crime section but we did as much as we could do. We went on Saturday 3/4/23 and they opened at like 10:30 and closed at 4:30 and you could easily take up that entire time in there as there is so much for the kids to see and do. What I was not happy with was the prices of the gift shop. I’m aware prices at museums/tourist attractions are always a little more pricey BUT usually, the prices are still reasonable. My daughter was going to get a sloth stuffed animal and it was a small stuffed animal (approximately 10” in height” and they wanted $41 for it. The super small stuffed animals were $20. That’s insane. Waters are approximately $3.50-$4 per bottled water however, they allow you to bring outside drinks in (from what I could tell) so it may be beneficial (especially if you’re taking kids) to bring a small cooler or book bag with some bottled waters for the day. My best friend bought a stuffed animal, a stress squeeze ball and 3 bead bracelets for $90. The squeeze stress ball exploded about 5 minutes after leaving the gift shop (while we were walking around) and we took it back to the shop and asked if we could get another one and they said “sorry, we don’t do refunds or exchanges”. Considering the museum offers discounted prices for people with WIC and/or EBT, you’d think they’d have a little more affordable prices in their gift shop. My 10 year old decided she wasn’t paying and wasn’t allowing me to pay $41 for a stuffed animal she could get on Amazon for more than 1/2 the price. She did buy a small crystal animal keepsake and it was $11. Aside from that, everything else was great. If you purchase tickets online, it’s cheaper. For 2 adults and 2 children tickets (purchased online), it was $85 and we parked in the parking garage and paid for parking inside the museum for a discounted rate too ($14 to park all day if you pay inside the museum). We didn’t know it was cheaper to buy tickets online but they have a QR code right by the front door and you can stand to the side and purchase your tickets right there and save $3-4 bucks per ticket that way! Overall, I’d go again but I’d definitely be more prepared and take our own drinks and not plan to buy anything in their gift shop.
Positive experience: The exhibits were pretty cool and very hands on. The kids loved it. Pretty spacious and lots of different things to see/do. I feel like the price tag isn't worth it for the adults specifically but I think it's cool they offer discounts for EBT.
Positive experience: I would have liked to rate this place higher but unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations which I had after visiting the website and pictures. The line to buy tickets was quite long, even the line for people who bought tickets in advance. It was very crowded and hot. This place had some very interesting exhibits but unfortunately since it was so crowded it was hard for my granddaughter who is 6 year's old to get close enough to them to enjoy it. There were only a few actual interactive exhibits and I was expecting much more. Again, even those exhibits were so crowded. Some of the exhibits were amazing and beautiful. Perhaps if I could come at a time that it's not as crowded ( not sure when that is) it might be more enjoyable for my granddaughter.
Fantastic experience: This is a big place with lot of information for kids and adults related to science. It’s a well maintained property and surely families with kids can spend nice 2-3 hours. This place has lot to offer which can keep young as well as big kids engaged. You need to pay for parking which you can buy online and show at the entrance desk or you can directly buy at the entrance desk. They have Imax for you to watch movies related to science and fiction. Inside you will also find a little rain forest.I definitely recommend this place.
Positive experience: A little pricey! I paid $45 & $17 for parking for a toddler and one adult. They do have 3 levels of attractions. I believe this is geared more toward older kids. I don't think it was worth the price. However, it's a pretty cool place with several unique areas!
Fantastic experience: I went here with my family on a Saturday and it was extremely busy. Both of my sons, ages 1.5 and 4.5, really enjoyed themselves. We were there for a little over 4 hours and it was time well spent. The hands on exhibits were really nice and educational. Some exhibits were a little more popular than others, so there were lines, which was fine. However, done kids weren’t being supervised so they were skipping the line which was incredibly frustrating for a toddler who was waiting patiently for his turn. Considering some people just let their children run wild with little to no supervision here, it would be nice if some of the more popular exhibits had “attendants” to try and keep things orderly and fair. There’s an area for little kids specifically, which both of my kids loved and would’ve stayed in for hours had we met them. The second floor had most of the “cool stuff” which we almost missed out on because we didn’t realize we had to take a special elevator to get to it. Would’ve been helpful if the people at the front desk told us that, but fortunately, we discovered it on our own. The small aquarium was ok even with some of the sea creatures being a bit shy, one of which seemed hungry. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The exhibits were mostly in good condition with the exception of a few that could’ve used some tending to, and it was really fun for my children and I. I would definitely recommend this to parents with kids of all ages. Even people without kids would enjoy themselves here.
Negative experience: I was in this place 10 yrars ago and expected to see a lot of improvements, new areas and attractions. However, I even found thar they removed a lot of equipment and left empty areas for just wandering around. Admission was high, lines are long on a workday, staff are teenagers that dont care. Equipment is broken sometimes and outdated. Rooms with the insects and fishes are empty or display just several animals. Rainforest has coouple of parrots and birds. It was horrible experience.
Fantastic experience: By far the best experience we have had so far in the city. My four kids, ranging from 3 to 15 all loved it. We will be back!
Fantastic experience: The staff were amazing!! We have been before but never have the staff been more attentive and involved in making our visit the best experience ever!
Positive experience: I've been coming here since I was Young on field trips. I've always enjoyed it. When I got older I started bringing my children here. We always had a blast. Yesterday we went for the first time in a long time and I have to say I was disappointed. All four of my kids were bored within a half hour of getting there. It just doesn't seem the same. Cuba was their exhibit and you had to pay more to get into it. If you didn't then you were left with only half the museum to enjoy. I must say my family and I won't be back. Goodbye Discovery Place. It was fun when it was fun.
