Positive experience: It's cute, small, but cute. Clean, nice tanks, informational. Cool outside area, cute touch tank.

Sarah Metcalf 2 months ago

Fantastic experience: This is a well thought out aquarium with lots to do in a small space. We all really enjoyed our time here and my 2 1/2 old year especially had a blast! I especially enjoyed watching the river otter enrichment and learning more about the brothers. And the polkadot batfish. It is my new favorite fish. Definitely recommend if you've got littles and are in the area. The nursing room was also very thoughtfully arranged and I appreciated it for my infant! Thank you for whoever put that together.

Fantastic experience: I love a good aquarium, and this one was no exception! I loved getting to see the sea turtle “hospital”, as well as all of the other conservation projects this aquarium does!!

Fantastic experience: Looks small but packed full all kinds of sea creatures and even some north western animals/reptiles. Liberty the eagle was a beauty.

Fantastic experience: The Aquarium was a lot of fun and the staff were very informative and we're able to answer all the questions that my granddaughter and I asked. Definitely want to go again.

Fantastic experience: This aquarium was amazing! I did the VR/immotion experience which was unforgettable. It felt so real! The giant fish tank was mesmerizing. So many different fish and so much education. I was very impressed.

Fantastic experience: We had a great time here! Awesome location in the harbor and not overly crowded. Staff was all very friendly and knowledgeable and there’s plenty of interactive exhibits!

Fantastic experience: This is a very nice aquarium to visit. The displays are clean and well kept. Lots of variety as well. Not the biggest aquarium I’ve ever been to but also not the smallest. I would call it mid sized. It is very expensive considering its size - if you buy tickets online ahead of time you can save a few bucks. The gift shop items were also quite pricey. All in all a nice place. It took one hour to see everything.

Fantastic experience: I was able to turn our visit here into a day in the classroom for my son! The staff didn't shy away from participating and helping to share facts. I also love that their history notes include some families that I know and who look like me, who also played a major role in this area becoming the gem that it is.

Fantastic experience: Really excellent experience. We fed the rays and touched sharks and sea urchins. They had a really great demonstration for the turtle hospital as well.

Mitchell Moody 3 months ago

Fantastic experience: Nice aquarium! Plenty to do. Hands on stuff is really cool, and touching stations are included in admission, which is very nice. Shout out to the coolest hand washing stations I have ever seen! They have several different types and sizes of exhibits. My son loved seeing the divers in the big tank. The views outside are amazing. You can also get snacks at the snack bar, and they have a sizable gift shop. The parking garage is really close and only $5. As bonus, if the dude is selling ice pops on the way back to the garage, get one!

Andrew Mackey 3 months ago

Fantastic experience: If you can handle the admission price, it is well worth the visit for both old and young. Check out the new touch tanks on the second floor, and buy fish the feed the rays down by the waterfront. Tremendous aquarium and worth a three hour+ visit.

Positive experience: This place, to me, was pretty small for a coastal aquarium, and with that, at $40/person, I didn't feel like it was worth the money. It had a good little assortment and a small array of exhibits, as well as things for kiddos to do. But I was through it in an hour, even taking the time to visit and interact. It's a quaint attraction if you're doing Ft. Sumter, but on its own, not so much. Parking at the aquarium was good - pretty cheap for that.

Geoffrey Bogner 3 months ago

Positive experience: Dynamic pricing tickets are horrible... not worth the value for the experience. Aquarium make good use of the small space. Great location.

Katie Arnold 3 months ago

Fantastic experience: Great time at the aquarium! Toddler had a blast.

Fantastic experience: Well… we went to the South Carolina Aquarium. There were fish. They swam. Water was involved, which I suppose makes sense. Kids seemed happy, so that’s something. Nobody got lost. Nobody fell in. Suppose that counts as a success. If you like water and creatures that live in it, you’ll probably enjoy it. Thanks for trying, museum. You did your best.

Positive experience: Went on a Wednesday afternoon with a 15 percent coupon from the visitors center. Was about $30 with coupon. Parked in garage was just a couple dollars. Small place , clean and modern. Lots of staff working there. Most gathered in small groups talking to each other. I saw it all in about 30 minutes. I think would be good for small kids, the little ones there were all quite happy. Other than that skip it. Not worth the money.

Positive experience: Although the aquarium is run well, offers educational information and experiences, I believe it is over priced. AT least offer a senior discount, or a complimentary picture or free parking!!! It was very expensive but it was enjoyed as a mediocre aquarium.

Fantastic experience: South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston, SC, is not the biggest aquarium I visited, nor the one with the most species of marine life. However, it is definitely the most friendly and welcoming one I have visited. Specifically, I am most impressed with the full-time staff and volunteers working in the aquarium. My family of four visited this aquarium on a Sunday afternoon in June 2025. I did not expect a full-time staff who worked in the marketing department on a regular Mon-Fri office hours to show up on a Sunday much less to serve as an exhibit guide. She enthusiastically pointed out many different interesting avian (yes, they have one avian section although it was relatively small) and marine animals to different visitors, including my family, and answering all of our questions. When she could not answer one of our questions, she went into the office to get the answer from someone and then came out again to give us the answer. This is someone who really loves her job. Other than her, there was another effervescent full-time staff who not only walk around serving as an exhibit guide but also tirelessly going from floor to floor to host different games and activities engaging the visitors. The aquarium also have two touch pools where visitors can touch star fishes, stingrays, horseshoe crabs, and many other small marine lives. These two pools (one outside and one indoor) are also staffed with volunteers who are eager to help and answer questions. Other than the two individuals I specifically mentioned earlier, I must have also spoken with another 4-5 more volunteers in the aquarium and they were all equally friendly and helpful to children and adults alike. Thus, if you are looking for a friendly, educational, and interesting place to visit in Charleston, South Carolina Aquarium is certainly the one place I strongly recommend.

Fantastic experience: It was a small aquarium compared to some others but I could have stayed there for days. It was beautifully laid out, you can go upstairs and make your way downstream, going from the river fish to the shore to the ocean. All of the fish are local to the area as well. The tank in the middle of the aquarium is the deepest open tank in North America which everyone loved, but mainly the teenagers, had to pry them away from it. You can’t miss it.

Positive experience: Unfortunately it’s not how I remember it and it felt much smaller and underwhelming. It was also way too busy. It needs a limit of visitors maybe. My daughter and I still tried to enjoy what we could get to but we spent less than one hour there. I will say I loved watching the sea otters

Drew Family 3 months ago

Fantastic experience: Fun, entertaining, educational, clean well run facility. Great for a couple hours of family hanging out. Convenient parking garage nearby and one can walk to other interesting places easily.

Ahmed Tak 3 months ago

Positive experience: The place is nice and well-organized, with some fun things to see, especially for kids. But honestly, there aren’t that many exhibits, and it felt a bit expensive for what’s actually there. It’s a good experience, but probably not worth visiting more than once unless they add something new

Kate C 3 months ago

Positive experience: The facilities are nice but had difficulty getting service at the snack bar, the one place to get food. It was unattended and the hot side was empty, which made things tough with 2 hungry little kids. The young guy in the gift shop said “hot dogs will be out in 5 minutes,” then walked off. 15 minutes later, we just grabbed a bag of chips, a bag of popcorn, the last stale hot dog, and checked out at the gift shop. The guy who said he would put the food out was chatting with his coworkers. For a $130 visit (for 2 adults, a 4 year old and, 1 year old) it would have been nice to at least be able to buy a few hot dogs or even just have someone helpful at the snack bar. Don’t know if it was really worth the price.

Positive experience: Nice aquarium with lots to see though not sure it warrants the ticket price of $40+ on peak days. I get some goes to conservation but it's easily a 3 hour visit if you don't stay for talks or do the VR ride. With our toddler we went through twice within a couple hours, though he was impatient. Probably good for locals who have memberships and can go more often to get the full value.

Positive experience: This is a place you would want to visit at least once. My wife and I have visited several times, and it gets old after a while. It's pretty much the same every time we visit. It's a great place for families with kids, if you can afford it. It's gotten a bit pricey like just about everything has over the last few years. Best option for parking is the garage. And it's within walking distance of downtown.

Leanna Miller 4 months ago

Positive experience: My family had an absolute blast! So many interactive things that my 9 month old absolutely loved. He got to meet a turtle, pet the star fish and stingrays, and he loved watching all the fun animals. The gift shop was a little outside our price point especially with the cost of tickets already being so high.

Fantastic experience: I was really impressed with this entire facility and the friendly staff! Well-maintained with several different educational exhibits catered to all ages. It was the perfect place to kill some solo time during a rainy day! I pleasantly enjoyed the touch tank with horseshoe crabs, starfish & more, as well as the big tank in the center of the building. It’s not a large aquarium but I spent a solid two hours here and still thought the price point was fair for how clean it was and the detailed exhibits. They also treat the animals very well and you can view some of the turtles they have saved! All the animals were very interactive and playful (sometimes you go to other aquariums and the animals are lethargic but that’s not that case here!). I also got to pet a snake that an employee was showing off. Overall, it’s easy to walk up and buy tickets in-person instead of online.

Fantastic experience: I took my oldest daughter (2.5yo) to the aquarium for some 1-on-1 time today. We have been several times before and it was always very fun but this time was above and beyond! She’s finally at the age where she can identify and articulate what she sees which is very exciting! An employee named Drew saw her excitement and took us up for a little special view at the top of the big tank! It was such a unique perspective of the aquarium and I might have enjoyed it even more than my daughter!

Positive experience: Not a bad aquarium, but nothing "oh my, you need to see". Clean and well cared for tanks. Staff was friendly and helpful. Touch tanks had cat sharks which is out of the normal for our home area, which was kinda cool. The price was a bit steep at $40 per adult (and that's the biggest reason for 4 instead of 5 stars). I'd say it is a solid $20 experience.

Fantastic experience: For an aquarium this small, this one is great! Maintenance is excellent, staff is very friendly. Liberty, the Bald Eagle, is a most fabulous and friendly creature. It does really help to use the technology to get a ticket before you show up, saves time. At the eastern section near the entrance you can see the dolphins in the outlet river/ocean. Positive experience: Pretty good aquarium, the kids loved it! There were A LOT of field trips there when we were which made it very loud and crowded. The schools also were letting the kids run wild and they were way to old to be acting the way they were. The staff were friendly and fantastic though! ☺️ I suggest seeing how many schools will be there or what time and to plan around that if you can!

Fantastic experience: Wife and I went on a Saturday. We already had tickets, walked straight up and got scanned and went in. The view of the ocean from the Dolphin deck is beautiful. That's where they have the stingray touch encounter. Always fun to do that! The whole aquarium is smaller but is very well laid out and plenty of animals to learn about and see. The turtle rescue area was cool to see and learn about especially. And Liberty, the Bald Eagle was a definite sight to see!

Fantastic experience: The South Carolina Aquarium, located on the historic Charleston Harbor, may be more modest in size compared to larger national aquariums, but it offers a thoughtfully curated and engaging experience that is both educational and family-friendly. The exhibits focus on the diverse ecosystems of South Carolina, from mountain streams to coastal shores, with an emphasis on conservation and local wildlife. Standout features include the Great Ocean Tank—one of the deepest aquarium tanks in North America—which houses a wide range of marine species, including sharks and sea turtles. The outdoor aviary with native birds adds a unique touch, offering a peaceful connection to the region’s natural environment. The aquarium also provides interactive exhibits and live animal encounters, making it especially appealing for children and young adults. Overall, it’s a well-designed and enriching experience for visitors of all ages.

Fantastic experience: We went to the aquarium on a Sunday morning at 1030am. I got tickets the night before online (I highly recommend). We made it right before the crowd. My favorite part was the turtle recovery center, where you can see turns that were saved from the wild. I saw about 4 new fish that I had never seen before and got to learn more about. There was a place to pet /feed sting rays and small tiger fish. There was also an outdoor section outdoor area and hands-on learning section.

Fantastic experience: My family loved this place. We came here during the weekday. There was plenty of parking available in the garage across the street for a small fee. When we entered the aquarium we were greeted by very friendly associates. As soon as we entered we took a picture. Soon after they offer the opportunity to buy the picture. I passed on that and decided to do the digital download, which is about $35.00. We paid the extra fee for feeding the jellyfish. It was a cool experience but I think my one and a half year old was a little too young to do it but he still got a kick out of it. The aquarium itself was clean and inviting. There's a nice display of fish. It's not as in-depth as the Baltimore aquarium, but a nice display nonetheless. I suggest stopping by and taking a look if you haven't already. It's a great activity to do with a toddler, if you happen to have one.

Fantastic experience: This our favorite aquarium that we have been to! They take great care of the fish and have great tanks and educational slides for the species. The large Ocean tank is incredible. We were even invited to see the behind the scenes operations and feeding of the large tank! Maurine did a great job with the tour and had an abundance of great information. Hope to visit again in the future!

Fantastic experience: We had the best time at the SC Aquarium. The staff was knowledgeable and Bob took us behind the scenes of the big tank during feeding time! This was such a special part of our vacation and we will never forget getting to see Caretta at the top of the tank.

Positive experience: Cute little aquarium that we walked to from the cruise port. We bought tickets before we left but many people did not. There was a lot of cute exhibits. I especially enjoyed the ones where you could interact with small sea creatures. We spent about an hour and it was well worth the cost

Positive experience: My experience at the aquarium was decent. The place is more suitable for children than for adults. You can spend about an hour to an hour and a half there. It is not very large compared to other aquariums I have visited. What impressed me the most was their dedication to rescuing and caring for turtles.

Positive experience: Great place to visit. Clean. Team members are friendly and very family friendly. Need more diaper changing areas though but a great and interactive place.

Positive experience: It felt a little pricey. It was a huge building with a giant 42 foot tank, but I somehow felt like there should be more to see. We did really enjoy feeding the stingrays. But it's also a sea turtle rehab/rescue center so worthy of respect.

Fantastic experience: Incredible experience. Great mid-sized aquarium in beautiful historic area. The shows were good, the exhibits are well maintained, and the staff was absolutely top tier. Everyone we interacted with were the nicest and most helpful people! Grace and Jess both spent extra time educating my children on various animals. Really glad we decided to visit! Keep up the great work South Carolina Aquarium!!!

Fantastic experience: South Carolina Aquarium was a beautiful venture ! So many cool animals to see, loved the set up; there was a main stairwell in center of the building and the deepest aquarium in the nation - was awesome to see the various on different levels and depths. There was a children's section, my grandchildren really loved playing on the small playground there

Positive experience: The turtle exhibit was empty and another exhibit was “under maintenance “. It’s not that big and those not being open was disappointing. Great views and child friendly.

Thank you for taking time to give us your feedback. Our Coast Gallery exhibit is currently under construction as we are re-fabricating a new accessible touch tank, as well as adding a family restroom and a nursing room on the second floor. As we enter our 25th year of operation, we are excited to complete this critical project to further accessibility through interactive learning opportunities and comfortable, private spaces. The Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery currently has 6 turtles on exhibit. There may be some empty tanks from time to time when we release a rehabilitated turtle and prepare for the next patient. The South Carolina Aquarium is a nonprofit organization, and your visit supports our mission, including the highest standard of animal care, conservation initiatives throughout the state, STEM education for thousands of students and our Sea Turtle Care Center™. Thank you for supporting these efforts through your visit. We have passed along your feedback to our leadership team, and we hope you consider another visit in the future!

Positive experience: We came here on a field trip and I didn’t really know what to expect. One thing that I loved was that this was more than just an aquarium, they had eagles, snakes, and even otters. One thing that the kids loved was that you could touch some rays and even small sharks. The only think that doesn’t make it a 5 star review was that it was a little smaller than other ones I’ve been to.

Bekah Johnson 7 months ago

Fantastic experience: Engaging, mesmerizing & memorable! Interactive opportunities at the touch pools, staff-led pop-ups in the lobby, and the sting ray tank were such a treat! And watching acrobatic river otters produced pure joy! The folks here are doing great work, definitely worth the price of admission.

Charles Sommers (Chuck) 7 months ago

Positive experience: A pleasant experience but lacked the depth of other aquariums charging the same admissions fees. The focus seemed more on raising more money for their work than providing a quality experience for the guests. Their work is important, but so is my experience. They also need better snack options.

Fantastic experience: The South Carolina Aquarium is a fantastic experience for all ages! Easy to access with convenient parking, it’s a great spot for families with kids. The exhibits are well-designed, and the interactive events keep children engaged while also being educational. From touching stingrays to watching sea turtles up close, there’s plenty to see and do. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, making the visit even more enjoyable. Highly recommend for a fun and memorable day!

Positive experience: The building is well kept. The habitats are well maintained and they do great work with sea turtle rescues. The workers are so very kind as well. As a non profit....the amount of money they make from visitors and companies that donate, along with the prices in their gift shop doesn't match what they offer, rescue wise or exhibit wise. $84 for a hoodie is pretty outrageous. $30 for a digital photo is crazy. A few exhibits were down, hopefully to be redone. The only reason I visit is because I was gifted a family pass. If I didn't have it, I wouldn't go. Hopefully all that money they get goes to good things. I've been here several times over the years. So this isn't just a random review lol.

Fantastic experience: It was awesome! I have had a fear of fish for a long time, and this is the first aquarium I've been able to willingly walk into in 17 years! The staff was super friendly! We watched the dive show and had a good time by the end! Definitely recommend.

Fantastic experience: My family and I visited during the Christmas holiday and it was absolutely amazing! I haven’t been in some time, but just all of the Christmas lights and decorations were absolutely beautiful that They had out not to mention the aquatic animals was just so much fun for all of us. We took some amazing pictures And actually learned a lot about the animals have and also rehabilitate. The staff was very knowledgeable of their job and would approach you to fill you in on whatever it was you were looking at, they were also very friendly. I would definitely recommend anyone living in Charleston or visiting Charleston to visit the aquarium! You won’t be disappointed anytime of the year!

Fantastic experience: It was a much smaller aquarium than I thought it would be. But we had a great time and even saw a military ship being push while we were there. Our daughter had fun petting the stingrays and the starfish.

Positive experience: Ok for a short stop with kids. High price given the small size of the aquarium overall. It was extremely crowded when we went but that was mostly due to reason and holidays.

Fantastic experience: My family and I have never been to an aquarium before and this was 10/10!! For 3 adults and 3 kids it was over $200, but it was worth it. The staff all over were very friendly and surprised to be able to buy tickets to feed sting rays!! The massive fish tank that you can get a view on multiple floors was amazing!! Petting star fish and little sharks was also a top memory. Would definitely recommend this place to visitors and suggest parking at the nearby parking garage. The parking garage was easily accessible and wasn’t expensive at all.

Positive experience: Went to special event - 'Aquarium Aglow' and was very crowded. Displays of lights were nice but a little too loud and chaotic for me. It seems it was a bit smaller than I expected. Some animals were not visible during my visit in the evening.

Thank you for your feedback. Animal wellbeing is our top priority, and this includes giving animals the choice to “take a break” from light and sound stimulation. During your visit to Aquarium Aglow, some animals, such as our river otters and American kestrel, may not be in full view. In addition, curtains in Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery™ are lowered every evening at 8 p.m. to mimic a natural light cycle for our sea turtle patients.

Positive experience: Pros: Attended a special holiday event "Aquarium A grows". All rooms were lit with color lights. Several beverage stations are located on different levels. A few conservative exhibits with rescue animals. Most exhibits are various fish, otters, and one eagle. Facility is on the tour bus route 210 drop off (public transportation available). Cons: Extra crowded during event, small spaces to move through, so sometimes unable to see exhibits. An additional fee is associated with parking in the garage.

RE Hargrave 10 months ago

Positive experience: A nice aquarium with several cool things to look at, including otters, snakes, a sea turtle rehabilitation center, and sharks! We just happened to go the same day a ton of schools were fieldtripping there, so it was very crowded and a little chaotic and loud.

Positive experience: This aquarium is excellent! I feel it was a little small for the price, but they made excellent use of their space. I loved the big tank with the sea turtle and sharks. They had a wide variety of animals. I really enjoyed the two interactive tanks and the outdoor bird area. Overall, a great aquarium.

Anne Snelgrove 10 months ago

Fantastic experience: A truly unique aquarium experience. While the facilities are rather small, the exhibits are diverse. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. There are plenty of opportunities for children of all ages to interact with everything from stingrays, chain dog fish and fresh water turtles. The sea turtle rehabilitation center is very well done. It is actually possible to watch procedures and observe the patients. They are currently in the process of updating the facilities but there are still so many things to do.

Fantastic experience: If you buy ahead of time you can save money on the website. We went from 11 am - 2pm and it looks like feeding time happened so the fish and animals were more interactive. Before we left we checked the otters again and they were out playing so I recommend that if you dont see them at first. The lady working the stingrays feeding was so awesome and made my daughter feel special on her birthday! We also had a good laugh. Thank you!!! Edit: I forgot to mention if you can catch the event where the staff talks to a diver in the tank, it's interactive for the kids and they also have a great sense of humor! I really enjoyed it too.
